After planning to come here for months and it getting messed up somehow each time, I finally made it in to Salt Pepper Ketchup in Hawthorne, NJ. I had that "Jersey Meat" (Taylor ham or pork roll, whatever you call it) egg and cheese but I'm happy I listened to the owner here and also got the Chopped Cheese. This breakfast sandwich was stellar but the Chopped Cheese was very possibly the best one I've ever had. The Jersey meat had a hard sear to it, which I love. Plenty of meat, cheese, and eggs on a fresh hard (Kaiser) roll. I got it with just pepper. Jersey meat is salty enough on its own and I typically don't rock ketchup with eggs. This would have been awesome with a splash of hot sauce though. Great sandwich. The chopped cheese was the hero here though. This was on a fresh jersey long roll and the seasoning in the meat was fantastic. Best seasoned ground beef I've probably ever had for a chopped cheese. Plenty of cheese, the roll, and the toppings were all very complimentary. The sauce is great on this as well. I got that extra drizzle overtop and I'm pumped I did. I had a side of it as well and trust me, I used it. Do not pass on this sandwich if you come here. His Chopped Cheese is most popular, I had that with a side of fries. After going between the Philly Cheesesteak and Cuban I ended up getting the cuban for my dad. The sandwich was delicious, soft delicious roll, with the chopped meat & cheese. Put it all together and you get one WOW of of the sandwich!! The Garlic fries were definitely garlicky and came with a garlic aioli dipping sauce. My son was in heaven. They were so good. Great crisp and taste. Service was quick and efficient I had to wait a bit because he was very busy, but it was worth the wait. There were about 4 tables in the place so I recommend getting there early if you're going to eat in, or if it's nice out finding a nice spot in Hawthorne to sit and eat. Sadly this place ain't it for me and it has been on my list for over a year. The guy behind counter when I walked in was very nice and had a big smile on his face when I asked him about a menu. The reason for the score and the reason I left without ordering anything was that it was filthy. Inside had a bare display case and you could see behind counters which looked like it was never cleaned. The outside and awning are in desperate need of a power washing. Presentation is everything. I have followed Salt Pepper Ketchup's Instagram for well over a year now, and the day has finally had arrived --- I have finally tried one of their LEGENDARY SANDWICHES. Of all the sandwiches that looked entirely tempting to order (see menu pictures), I showed the owner a picture of the "SPK Central Cut Breakfast Sandwich", and in no minute at all, he began to make it fresh in front of me. It took about 5-6 minutes, but it was worth it because that sandwich looked exactly like the food he posted on social media. It really does look as good as it tastes. Crazy. What makes a "SPK Central Cut Breakfast Sandwich"? Well, brotha, it has - Crispy Applewood Bacon - Layers of Taylor Ham -Sausage -Hashbrown Patty -Eggs -Cheese This sandwich was LOADED. SALT, PEPPER, ATTITUDE..... I tried this place when they first opened and everything that I ordered was absolutely horrible. I ordered a waffle breakfast sandwich and it was over cooked and soggy. I also ordered a bagel with scallion cream cheese and it was one of the worst bagels I've ever tried. I Haven't really bothered to go back after the food was so bad. Decided to give it one last chance because I really wanted a nice chicken wrap today. I noticed that they had good reviews but also a lot of bad. I now totally understand what the people on here meant about their negative feelings. On google as well. Mostly about the Awful attitude the owner has. Extremely fake because when I went in there he was all smiles and a "nice guy" but after when I called about why I was upset he was not nice at all. Not a class act. Instead of admitting that something could have been off or maybe he just really didn't want to serve a fair amount of chicken he made it all my fault. He said he serves a specific amount on everybody's. If this were the case no one would go back and they would all be starving. I ordered a plain wrap with grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato and I added avocado. I also said I didn't want the fries out of my own preference. I noticed that the prices on his website are completely different then the ones he charges people. Not sure why he won't just update that, it's misleading. On other reviews he told people that prices are subject to change, yes we get that as customers but come on, update your menu. He charged me extra for the avocado (which I understand) he also charged me for sauce (his other wraps come with sauce so I'm not sure why he needed to change me for it he didn't even tell me it was extra). I told him how my wrap had a few tiny pieces of chicken in it. It was extremely disappointing. All I wanted him to do was admit fault or offer to make it right. He was very condescending and rude to me. I told him how I understood the costs of things rising, but I also as a customer deserve to get a decent sandwich for my money. He said I could come back in to get a refund and I told him I won't be returning and that he could just refund my card himself. I don't want to go back in there ever. I guess my message to the owner is this: Think before you speak, your representing your business, your brand. Kindness goes way further with people then needing to be right about something. I support many small businesses in the area and a lot do them are family owned and their super nice and respectful. You won't find that here. Maybe if the owner would readjust his attitude and drop the ego he would make people happy and they would return. I will never be going back there. When people ask me about this place I will be telling them to pass, there's MANY MANY other better places all over this small town! read more

I've been trying to get to Salt Pepper Ketchup for a while now and was finally able to make it there this past weekend. My boyfriend & I ordered some breakfast sandwiches to go from here. I got the Simple But Impactful sandwich, which was as the name suggests. I was sold when I saw they put hash browns on a sandwich. My only wish was that it came with sliced avocado on it, instead of avocado spread. My boyfriend ordered the Chopped Cheese Breakfast Sandwich and OH. MY. GOD. Never before have I had chopped cheese, frankly I'm not even quite sure what it is, but whatever this was, was DELICIOUS. The meat was well seasoned and sooooo flavorful. I kept stealing bites of his sandwich. The gentleman working behind the counter was friendly & informative. He took the time to tell us about the menu and what the popular items are, and just by the way he spoke about it, you could really tell that he's proud of what they're doing here. Apparently there are even some secret menu items, but you didn't hear that from me. Their Monte Cristo is made with french toast as the bread for this sandwich. They also have a sandwich where they use waffles in place of bread & another sandwich where they use plantains instead of bread too. Love the creativity here. Surprised I haven't been to this local joint yet, so I stopped in! Ambiance: Corner store breakfast/lunch spot. Had a couple tables inside, but looked like it was mainly order to-go. Parking on the side streets to pick up, waited 15 minutes for the order after placing it at the counter. Did not seem too busy for a December Saturday at 2. Price: Seemed about right, especially with food pricing being a bit on the higher side. Ordered: BLT and Chicken Sandwich on a Sub Pros: The food tasted great and the service was nice. Cons: The deli case was empty and the place seemed pretty bare and un-lively. Could just be the way the world is now, but would be nice to see a full display case and some more decor. For a relatively new spot it didn't feel too new. I also thought the BLT was a triple decker but was only a double. Overall: Not a bad spot for a bite to eat, definitely would come back, but I don't think the potential for this place has taken off yet. read more

My husband said it looked like SPK was a one man show this weekend and that it was crazy busy. It's frustrating that this seems to be the new normal. We ordered 2 Simple But Impactful sandwiches and an order of fries. We didn't get our fries and our sandwiches didn't have the hash browns mentioned on the menu. He was so nice and it is people like him I'm happy to give my business to. I ordered the tres golpes sliders and the Reynoso waffle sandwich as well as the yuca fries. Oh my yum. The star was definitely the tres golpes sliders which is essentially a fried egg, fried cheese, and fried salami with a special sauce on a long roll that is cut in 3. I went on a Friday morning to try SPK for the first time. I had a great overall experience! SPK had great curb-appeal. The black brick with grey and red ascents not only made the spot modern and hip but it catches your eye while driving down this local side street. Inside was bright and modern and I was greeted by the owners whom were very nice and personable. I chose to order the Tres Golpes sliders which is fried salami , fried cheese , and a fried egg. They asked if I wanted to add hash browns to the sliders and at this point I felt all or nothing so I gave in . The Tres Golpes was packed with flavor and was enough food for 2 people at such a good price. The only problem is I wasn't sure if I was going to be in a food coma all day or have a heart attack hahaha Looking forward to going back!
