Tried it out for a quick Monday lunch on the recommendation of a friend. Didn't even know this hole in the wall was here! Ambiance: Small very casual quick eats Spanish spot. Known for their empanadas. A few parking spots out front, not really meant for dine in anyway. Wasn't busy at all on the Monday afternoon I went, but I wouldn't be surprised if most of their orders were just Uber eats or catering runs. Price Point: Around $2.50-$3.50/empanada. Overall seemed very reasonable for the quality/quantity of the food. The rest of the items seemed well priced too although I only got empanadas. Pros: Service was quick, food was made fresh, and everything tasted delicious. It was a very simple lunch run for me and it was executed perfectly. Cons: Since they weren't very busy, they weren't sure if they had the gyro meat for my gyro empanada, but were able to find it and whip it up. Could've just been an off day and they were waiting on inventory, which isn't much of a con, but it's the only thing that had potential to ruin my quick lunch. Overall: Highly recommend trying this place out! Never knew it existed and I'm certainly going back for more empanadas and other food. Through the pandemic, I had a slight bad experience buttttt I gave them another chance and stopped by about a week ago with my coworkers. We've been hooked ever since. We love the empanadas, they are just fully filled with different stuffings from meatball parm, steak, cuban, breakfast and more. This review would be worse if it weren't for COVID-19. Visited here on a recent morning and asked for two empanadas. I was told that they would be made fresh. I didn't have expectations for that but I was hopeful. The price was higher than what they had listed on their menu but hey, I'm not going to complain too much. The empanadas came out very quickly so I assumed that they had been deep fried at high heat. I leave the store and the empanadas weren't even warm. I figure that I'd give them a shot still but they were kinda bland and the menu didn't list all the ingredients in the empanadas. I don't understand the appeal of this place, we got the tiniest breakfast burritos ever. McDonald's serves bigger ones and at least it's hot. It was 11:30 am. The day we went it was a mostly empty space no seating. The service was odd, no one greeted us, no one inside. Everything was unattractive and disorganized. long area with no definable area for ordering or to pay. The girl behind the counter couldn't find containers or coffee cups. Only 3 kinda of empanadas available, and no hot food out to choose from or even a menu. I went to Gourmet Express Market in Hawthorne a day before the Super Bowl to order empanadas and wings. A lady that greeted me to take my order informed me that orders for Super Bowl Sunday was completely full due to the fact that football fans placed orders at least a week in advance. A gentleman behind the register (probably the owner) saw how disappointed I was and told me to hold on while he took a look at a pile-high of orders. After shuffling through them at a table, he was able to squeeze me in for a Sunday afternoon pickup. On top of that, he gave me a free beef&cheese empanadas. It was ecstacy. The outside crust was crusty and flaky, and the inside melted in your mouth. I have had Columbian, Spanish and Puerto Rican empanadas. Just ordered a breakfast sandwich to go. The lady at the encounter said it would be 10 minutes for a ham egg cheese. I said no problem. Got an empanada while I waited. As it all came out it was close to $6 without a drink. Seem high considering the sign outside read $3 but went on my way. When I had a chance, I pulled out my ham egg cheese and surprise, no egg! Just ham and cheese. I called to let them know and the lady who took my order was more upset and said I did not ask for egg. I specifically entered and asked if it was too late for a breakfast sandwich. Furthermore, she asked me to read the price and I read it as it stated " ham egg cheese $3". Somewhere along the lines it got botched and instead of saying sorry, can you come back. It was a mistake, no she persisted to talk over me and say I did not ask for eggs. Terrible! Went because I had a gift certificate, owner refused to honor, said he didn't know where we got it from. When we told him, he played if off like he didn't know, said it was old, when it clearly stated it was issued Nov 2018 and expired Jan 31, 2019. Also cook doesn't wear gloves when preparing food, food is way overpriced. Wouldn't have minded spending the money if the food wasn't so tasteless and bland. I wasn't going to yelp but I couldn't let it go! I've been ordering from this place a couple of times, ever since I started working in Hawthorne. Empanadas are delicious, which they deserve a 4 star! BUTTTTTT last week, I decided to order 8 pcs of chicken wings and a small container of plain white rice, which clearly on their menu and inside of the store states they cost $8.95 for wings and she charged me $3.00 for rice. When it came to pay, the owner has the audacity to charge me $16.95 for the wings (DOUBLE) because the prices have gone up and they purchase their poultry from Goffle Road Poultry Farm (what a load of sh!t). I went to the Goffle Road Poulty Farm and the prices are so reasonable. I've gone to other restaurants in town who purchase from the same location and never have they double charge on chicken wings nor any other meal. Even Black Jack Mulligans have the greatest wings and fresh, which are awesome and they are reasonable in price. We are all going through hard times but it does not give you the right to overcharge the customers. Such a disappointment and I will never step foot in there ever again! From the outside this place looks uninviting, but step inside and taste their food....It is amazing. The empanadas are delicious, I've yet to try one I didn't like, and my kids love them as well. They're fresh and delicious. They also have homemade hot food...to go...that is reasonably priced and the quality is top notch! This is my go to place when I need a homemade, healthy but quick meal for my kids and or me. I think this place would do well to supply empanadas for school lunches. I do not review often but I feel I must in this case. I stopped their for breakfast on my way to work and I was the only customer. The young woman at the counter was not friendly and when I asked for an egg sandwich with sausage she looked at me like I had two heads. She said that sausage would take at least 5 minutes so I said okay how about taylor ham? She said, "okay, but she still has to make the eggs so it will be a wait". I assumed "she" was the cook behind the counter. It turns out the young woman made the egg sandwich and it was not good. She added cheese which I didnt ask for, the taylor ham was over cooked and hard. I had to wait an unusual amount fo time for a simple sandwich. When I asked about coffee, I was pointed to a self service carafe. Not what I would expect from a Spanish restaurant. The menu board states that an egg/cheese sandwich is $2.00 and with taylor ham it is $1.00 more. I was charged $3.75 and I when I questioned it the girl stated sorry that is the price in my system and only the owner can change it. I asked for the owner and he/she was not there. They advertise breakfast specials but they are not truly not set up or inclined to handle breakfast. I was hoping to have found a gem on my way to work but the customer service, lack of enthusiam, atmosphere, and food preparation is sadly disappointing. I have been told about this place more than once, but so many of these places are fly by night, and as a foodie, and cook with a discriminating palate, I take considerable pause in even walking in to try what they are selling. I finally went into this market for Empanadas. To my surprise they have a myriad of choices, but I simply prefer Puerto Rican style Pastilios, great sofrito, green olives, and I am all in. I ended up buying the beef empanadas as they were traditional to the family creating the savory delights. I was hesitant to try them because of the cheese, but it adds a wonderful buttery essence, and they are beyond generous with the amount of beef stuffed into their light, crisp, yet tender pastry dough. The owner, and his staff are beyond welcoming, and kind. They know their menu, and I gathered it was important to them that I was a very satisfied customer, who would return. While my order was incorrect, and I did not notice until I was putting out dinner at my not so very local destination, mistakes happen, what I really wanted to try were the empanadas, which I did, and their customer service is what you want it to be. I am not a fan of the American food traditions being stuffed into an emapanada, that is just me. I don't eat chicken parm either! GO here, this Market deserves your patronage. It was before 11am and I went for empanadas since other reviews were good on here. I did try the Chix and cheese. Not bad, but not great. They are definitely filled, which is good. The pink sauce that everyone likes, left a lot to be desired for me. It was like a Thousand Island dressing without the relish. I also ordered a meal. Since it was early, they only had a beef stew and oxtail (rabo) ready. So I got that with chaufa (Peruvian Fried Rice). I have to say, it was the worst chaufa I've ever had! Wasn't even fried rice, tasted like old dish water was used. The oxtail didn't have a savory, thick sauce, but rather a watery, tomatoey sauce. They claim to serve Latino Food, but I'll stick to getting my Latino food in Paterson! Oh, did I mention, they charge $10 for oxtail? Yeah, after the sign says one meat, rice, bean, soda $8. From the outside I really didn't know what to make of this place but I always try to support local businesses. So I stopped in here twice. Once, to try their empanadas and again to try their lunch. I was underwhelmed by the empanadas. I love empanadas, who doesn't? I had a beef one that was lacking flavor as was the chicken ones my boyfriend got. I gave it another shot when I got the lunch. It was a beef stew type of thing with rice. It was delicious! The staff is very friendly and welcoming. They really make you feel appreciated for coming in. You've got to go in to see all they offer, especially the hot food bar. It is a small place and when I was there they didn't have any tables to eat at (I don't know if that's changed). Although it looks small on the outside, this place has lots to offer! My family loves their empanadas. They have so many different kinds to choose from and each tastes better than the last. My favorite are the chicken empanadas, they are always stuffed with meat! The pink sauce is delicious as well. Their hot food bar is always offering different varieties of food.
