If it weren't corona time, I would've picked someone up at carpool and went to washington heights for Dominican food but that 16 dollar toll for the gwb is no joke! Craving is there so I choose to look for a spot in jersey even if it's a little further. Made a 15 minute drive and I wasn't disappointed! Got the oxtail, tres golpes, and seafood soup. Oxtail was good, but I wish they had given a bit more. Not enough protein for the amount of rice. Tres golpes was fantastic. Mangu was nicely flavored - onion sauce had jalapeños and peppers which I thought were a nice touch that I haven't seen elsewhere. Cheese, salami, and eggs were standard. Seafood soup was good. Had an assortment of fish, shrimp, mussels, calamari and etc. Downside is it had some shells and sand grains from the mussels. I would check the menu prices because I didn't realize at the moment but when I went back home with the takeout menu, I noticed they had overcharged me by ~5. I would stop by again if I am in the area shopping at Costco. Would definitely get the tres golpes again. Might really be one of the best ones I've had in a while.

Was upset when the old place that was in this spot went out of business but was happy to see they kept it a Dominican spot with good food. Staff here is super nice as well. Stop in here when my husband is craving food from the motherland and my attempts of cooking it are not up to his standards. They offer a variety of authentic dishes served cafeteria style. Recently had some delicious oxtail from here. Also a fan of the traditional Dominican breakfast of mangu, salami and queso frito. I'll be back for sure

    Pernil lunch special. Yum!

Best Dominican food in the area after change in administration. Highly recommended. Food is fresh and feels like it's home made.

La Cocina De Cristina - Dominican Spaghetti with Dominican Salami & Tostones

    La Cocina De Cristina

    (9 reviews)

I stumbled upon this establishment when I was searching for a Latin restaurant in Grubhub. Last…read morenight we decided against delivery and opted to drive out and dine in. This place has a parking lot next door but it seems that this lot belongs to an auto repair shop not the restaurant, it has tow-away signs but we parked in the lot because it was after hours. The restaurant is spacious, with plenty of tables, the music is low, the decor is low-key with some Winter motiffs. I told my wife that I was expecting more of an Island/Caribbean decoration. My wife ordered the Asopaó de Camarones (Shrimp Soupy Rice) & got Spaghetti with Dominican Salami, Tostones & Avocado. Hot tea to drink. I expected the Spaghetti to come with Dominican Salami as an option (this is how Dominican Spaghetti is prepared and served) but unfortunately it does not, the Spaghetti is plain & adding the Dominican Salami is extra. My wife's Asopaó was full of shrimps, very tasty she loved it as did i. My Spaghetti with Dominican Salami was pretty good. The Spaghetti were al dente enough (not too soft nor too hard), flavorful, Dominican Salami chunks were hearty (I was hoping that the Salami would be stewed but it was fried instead), the avocado was fresh & unblemished, & the tostones were perfectly golden fried & crispy. Ashley & Stacey were our servers and they were very friendly, full of smiles, on-point & honest. I said honest, because after paying the bill we asked for a pen to add a tip and she explained to us thar the tip (which is an automatic 15%) is already included. Which surprised us, usually tip is included with a party of 6 or more, we are only a couple. My wife and I always tip between 10% & 20% depending on the service of course. But no matter how bad, horrible was the service we tip at least the 10%. We detest restaurants that force us to tip. We believe we have the right to give a certain amount of our hard earned money ourselves, without forcing our hand. Because of this practice of including the automatic 15% tip, no matter the size of the dining party, I give a rating of 3 stars. If it wasn't for this forceful tipping, I would have given this place an easy 5 stars. So beware when dining in at La Cocina de Cristina, while the food is amazing, their tipping policy will force you to shell out 15% of your bill, whether the service was good or not. We will NOT dine in at this place ever again. If anything, I will order via Grubhub (which allows me to tip accordingly) or order take-out.

I happened to be in hackensack this past weekend and had a hankering for chicharron and tostones…read more I wound up getting their picadera (sampler) plate and it was off the chain. The chicharron, longaniza, and chicken were fried to perfection and the tostones were good too. I prefer my tostones a little crisper which is the only reason for the 4 stars and not 5 but that's just my preference. The place is beautifully decorated with dominican and it is very clean and well put together. Very nice vibe inside.

Lula's Latin Cuisine - Black beans

Have passed Lula's Latin Cuisine a few times recently and finally gave it a try last night…read more.. It's a small place with just a few tables, but we were grabbing food to go anyway and they had a nice variety/selection of prepared food at the counter. So, my wife and I were in the mood for Pernil (roast pork) and it looked good. She got white rice and black beans, and I got the yellow rice and red beans. There was (among other things to choose from) some good looking steak, chicken, soup, and Mangu (a dish made with mashed plantains). It also looked as though they had recently run out of boiled Yuca (because there was a near-empty warmer tray with red onions and garlic oil). Before we left, we picked up their menu and (even though the outside sign billed them as "Dominican food") looking through their menu made it apparent they offered MANY other things to order. There was Cuban sandwiches, Mofongo, and a LOT more. We got home and were amazed with the quality, freshness and (above all) perfect flavor of the food. The Pernil stood out for how juicy and perfectly spiced it was. There was just the right amount of salt, and I said it might be right up there with the the best I have had. The value for the price was outstanding, and there was enough leftover between us for another meal. I woke up this morning to find out that other meal was a late night snack for my son last night. LOL. Will definitely return to give this place another shot!!!
