On my second visit, we tried a few more things. Callaloo, goat curry, jerk chicken...and we got the oxtail again. The goat was tasty, but did have a bit of goatness to it. If you don't like any gamey flavor in your meat, maybe it's not for you. The jerk chicken was delicious - so flavorful, just like the jerk pork, but I did like the jerk pork a bit more. Callaloo was ok, but more potatoes and bread I find vs veggie. I really just wanted a lot of greens. The flavors were good though. Oxtail was consistent like last time and excellent. Overall, another good meal and we're learning what we like here. The whole atmosphere is fun too. read more

Yum! I can have Jamaican food every single day! Was craving for some oxtail and this place delivered! Fall off the bone good oxtail. It went perfectly with the rice and bean. It was ahhh--mazing! Portion was huge as well given how expensive ox tail is. Flavor was on point and it was just delicious! We devoured it in no time! Jerk chicken was great as well however I liked the ox tail for how flavorful it was. Overall, this is the place to come if you are in the area and you want Jamaican food. You won't be disappointed. Man working behind the counter was friendly as well! I will be back! read more

Delicious jerk chicken. Generous portions for price. Friendly owner. Highly recommended

My first experience with this restaurant is that I was honestly looking for a Jamaican restaurant I didn't realize that this was actually Haitian restaurant. I was not upset though because being able to see it establishment and how they do everything it was a good experience their establishment is small but, I will have to go back to be able to try the menu again because I usually like to be able to make sure my research is correct when I'm trying a new restaurant. For my review and my first experience I'm going to give a four star rating the food was really good and the company was nice but I will need to be able to try their specials when I go back again. The food was very fresh though I wish there was more of a bigger portion when it came to the goat portion of my meal but this was actually still a good experience. Plantains in the fresh vegetables and the goat was properly made and it was good meal to have. I have had Haitian cuisine before and for many years to be honest so I have a high expectation of Haitian cuisine. read more

Hit this joint for the first time Saturday. Jerk pork was good and the oxtail was better. Still more dishes to try. Will definitely return. Nice size place with a bar. Seems they might do more takeout than people staying. read more

This was some of the best food I have ever had in my life. I was working in the area and wanted a hot lunch spot. The jerk chicken is amazing. The best I've had. I got rice beans and cabbage which was also great. Cabbage refreshing and crunchy. They offer a small medium and large platter. The medium is A LOT of food. I could not finish half of it. But I'll have leftovers later. Highly recommend read more

Where I live I can't find ethic food. Sometimes I want home cooking , does not matter what country is from .every country has home cooking . This is the closest place for jamaican food. It is great. The people are friendly and the food is authentic . One of the best things about this place is that it has a bar . Spicy foods and beer go very well together. I love the jerked chicken and the ox tail . In this place the food is really good.. I enjoy scaping here on weekends sit down have a beer and enjoy home cooking.. While there I enjoy talking to Clark a heavy accent jamaican old man "white jamaican" It's hard to understand him . It's a surprise seeing a white jamaican .meeting the different cultures and talking to them over a beer is a treat .. This is living . I go here frequently ..experience this place ,you will feel welcomed ..no matter the race ...enjoy ethnic foods over beer .., Included a picture of the jerked chicken I had today ... I cannot believe there has not been a review on yelp for this place. Also known as Junior's for the owners name, this is Jamaican soul in the heart of Spring Valley smack on rt. 59! Curry goat, curry chicken, jerk chicken, BBQ chicken, goats head soup and of course ox tail! Each dish comes with rice and beans or white rice served with his to die for raw cabbage salad and fried plantains. Great prices. Three different sizes. Food runs out quickly daily usually around 7-8 pm most of the good stuff runs out. He's got the authentic Jamaican sodas and juices and a small bar too for some beer or wine. I love this place and am lucky it's close by. Very conveniently located right off 287/87 thruway rt. 59 exit. 3-4 miles from the TZ bridge/5 miles from Bergen County NJ. Right next to the Spring Valley Market Place shopping plaza. read more

Just found this place and had the jerk chicken and curry chicken. They were really good. We got pretty generous portions and the food was delicious. There seem to be limited dishes though in what they offer - about 5-6 dishes at lunchtime. This is probably due to Covid. The restaurant is spotlessly clean - the floors were gleaming and it has a very nice appearance. It doesn't look as though people are sitting inside though. Definitely a good place to visit when one wants a touch of the Caribbean. Will be going there often! read more

Best home cooked Jamaican Caribbean food! Feels like home! Stop by in the morning for breakfast- enjoy the ackee, salt fish and some green bananas. At night, stop in for some homemade jerk chicken and rice peas. Try the oxtail with the shredded cabbage and carrots. You will feel right at home on the islands in the Caribbean. Ps. On some days they have rum ice cream in the freezer. Another tip- call ahead for that ackee it runs out quickly. read more

Mostly everyone who comes here ends up ordering their rice and peas along with whatever main dish. I absolutely find this dish so so delicious because of the flavor and texture of the rice, and so I normally order it with cabbage. You really can't go wrong! I also find their veggie patty to be very fresh, flaky and just the right flavorful combination. The only reason I give this place 4 stars is because they don't have enough vegetarian/vegan options. read more

I hate to be THAT PERSON that goes against what everyone else thinks, but having lived in Jamaica for 7 years, I'm very picky when it comes to Jamaican food. The food itself I would give 4 1/2 stars. We ordered the jerk chicken and the ox tail which both came with rice and peas and vegetable (looks like Cole slaw but Jamaicans just call it vegetable). The jerk chicken was pretty true to what I expected. It was pretty hot if you don't love spice, but for those who eat jerk, it definitely wasn't the hottest ever experienced. The ox tail was very good but not quite as much meat as you would hope. I imagine it's hard to get good cuts of ox tail in Rockland county. Where they lose a half-star is the rice and peas. There just wasn't as much flavor as I was hoping for. Jamaica rice and peas is notorious for being made with coconut milk and having a sweet after-taste. The rice and peas was very good but didn't give me the sweetness that it should have. The reason I bumped them down to 4 stars was the overall experience. The food seems to be made in the morning and then kept in a buffet-type set of warmers all day. Since we stopped by around dinner time, the food was basically cold and had probably been sitting all day. Also because of this, once the food is gone, it's gone. So when we arrived they only had one small ox tail left, jerk pork or chicken, and curry goat. That's it. I was hoping to get either fried chicken or curry chicken, neither or which they had. While I understand it would be hard to make things on demand, they should at least have fried chicken. So they only get 4 stars from me because of that. I will call ahead next time for fried chicken and update this once I have it. read more

The food is great here. It's a hole-in-a-wall, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It keeps the riff-raff away. I had the jerk chicken and Jerk Pork. Both were great. The combos they have are a great value. I'm coming back for the Ox tail next ! read more

We were passing through town, staying at a hotel, and decided to try it based on Yelp reviews. We got there shortly after 6, and were told they were sold out of everything except jerk chicken. The owner explained that cooking takes a long time, they start early in the day, and make as much as they think they can sell. While we were there, several other people came in and were turned away. It was a Wednesday, so I don't know if they cook more on weekends. You might want to call ahead and see what's available. So we got the jerk chicken, it came rice & beans, & fresh cabbage salad. The dish was quite tasty, spicy-hot but not overpowering. We didn't see a menu, so I don't know what the price of our dinner was, but we had 2 dinners, 2 Red Stripe beers, and it came to $25.99 with tax, very reasonable. read more

For those of you who have never been to Spring Valley, let me put it this way...it is like being in the desert as far as good food is concerned. That said, I was looking for something different for lunch today and found the perfect oasis called Tropical Delicacy. I now work in the area and have driven past this place many times without notice. Let me tell you this...the understated exterior belies its contents. The contents being tasty and delicious island food served up in a clean and friendly environment. After a call to see what was on the lunch menu, my colleague and I took the short ride there. I had curried chicken and Edwin had the ox tail. Both lunch plates came with the sides of rice and peas, cabbage and carrots and a few sweet plantains. I had a Ting with my lunch which was reasonably priced at $11. The food was outstanding! While eating, we looked at each other, without saying a word, nodded approvingly and gave a thumbs up. Without a doubt, this place will be added to the regular rotation since the pickings are slim in this neighborhood. One thing to note...be prepared to wait if you head over there at around 12:30 for takeout because the line stretches from the cash register to the door. Aside from the wait (the only reason I gave four stars), there's absolutely no downside to eating here so head down to my newly discovered oasis in the desert, which I call Spring Valley, as soon as you can. read more

This place is your typical hidden gem. Easy to overlook, but a huge mistake. Cute atmosphere, and DELICIOUS food. I branched out of my normal chicken, and tried oxtail for the first time. NOT DISAPPOINTED ! For someone who isn't crazy about cow to begin with, this was so so delicious. Highly recommend getting it. I'd love to come back and try the jerk chicken (: Togo we had ordered chicken patties, since they were out of beef. They were good too, if you like Jamaican patties. Food is so good but its kinda pricey. This is my go to place whenever I'm feeling Caribbean.

Junior is the owner and the nicest guy in the world. Never had a bad meal here. The stew chicken and is so sweet and juicy. Friday is the best day to go and get the BBQ chicken. Tangy bbq with a little heat makes for an amazing meal. The rice and peas are great mix with the chicken. A beef patty with coco bread is a must. Been going here every Friday for the last 9 Years. read more

Love this place. Authentic, reasonably priced Jamaican food. Great jerk chicken.

food is great. inside and area are terrible. all of the dishes come with the same sides: rice and beans, coleslaw, and plantains. only sub. is white rice instead of the dark. order sauce on the rice, it's dry otherwise. a 'large' portion means more rice, not meat. the goat curry is quite spicy. the plantains are the only food issue / they just stay out and are usually a bit dry, but still good. largest minus of the place is the unwelcoming, over serious staff. read more

4.5 stars for this place! Get there early because it's a first come first serve place, we got there about 5pm mid week and they only had Jerk chicken left. This was not a disappointment whatsoever in flavor! Only disappointment was that we couldn't try more. Great spice with perfect heat level, it's quick, and owner (Junior) is very friendly. Signage is bad for identifying it but another Yelper posted a pic of the front which helped us. read more

I'm a Jamaican who knows proper Jamaican food. I always have the curry goat whenever I go for lunch and I must say it is always flavorful, tasty and the spice is just right. If you plan to dine in for lunch make sure you pay for your meal right after you order because the place gets crowded and you have to wait a really like time before paying after you eat. Would definitely recommend this place. read more

Shrimp curry was good. Jerk chicken okay. The prices on the menu on yelp is outdated according to the owner. Additionally no prices posted in the restaurant. Consequently asked for a menu and responded don't have. So seems like no consistent prices on items which is a turn off. I believe I was over charged. Will check out other Caribbean restaurants in the area. read more

Food is excellent, very authentic. Owner very nice and helpful. I felt like I was on the island, mon.

Came here based on previous Yelp reviews. It did not disappoint. Got the oxtail/curry goat platter.

So the food is great and no complaints about the quality, but I have been noticing when I ask for a large plate of rice and peas with either oxtail, curry chicken, etc, he's been giving me medium portions. The only reason why I know is because when the woman serves me, she gives me the large plate. When Junior does it, it's the smaller plate but charges me for the Large. I also notice the difference when other people he may be familiar with order it, it's usually the Large portion. Other than that, food is great, but because of it, I can only give a 4. Prices should be displayed so that a customer can see what they paying for and why. read more

Came based on the reviews, their was a line for lunch so I can see how popular it is. It is defiantly a "hole in the wall" yet the atmosphere was inviting, tables clean and service was friendly. We ordered jerk chicken, beans and rice that came with raw cabbage salad and fried plantain. The large portion was 14$. The jerk chicken was spicy, I enjoyed it! Rice and beans was also pretty good, I personally think there could have been more flavor in the jerk chicken rather than just heat as an aftertaste. I would come back again to try other things. read more

Went here for a quick bite on the way upstate. Kind awesome and quick. Think of it more like a cafeteria style service than anything formal during lunch. Have a sense (from the speaker stacks) it's a bit more of a party at night. Excellent oxtail. Right off the highway. Spotlessly clean. Really, really good food. Obviously made with love.
