The WORST hamburger we ever ate at a sit-down restaurant. We asked for medium and received hockey-pucks that were drowned in condiments. Patties were definitely from frozen meat that had smelling odor. French fries were so well done, they were crispy chips. Spent $42 for 2 burgers and 1 sparkling water. Left the place with just few bites. Since I was with my wife, we did not make a scene. If I was there alone, I would have sent the burgers back and left the place. read more

While driving up to NY this past weekend, I was looking for a nice place to stop for lunch with my wife and in-laws. Thanks to Yelp, I came across Old Stone. In this older town of Sussex, it was just what we were looking for. Old Stone is located in a little strip mall in the heart of town. There are only a few tables inside, but no problem seating on an early Saturday afternoon. The staff was very attentive and friendly. The food was excellent and very fresh. We chose the soup and sandwich combo. I had the signature roast beef sandwich and the turkey vegetable soup. We all loved our meals. Only suggestion I would make is to turn the heat up, was pretty chilly there. If you're in Sussex, give the Old Stone a try (just dress warm)! read more

I've lived up in this area for going on 5yrs now and am so happy to see there opened again, as they are a 5 minute walk from my place. Tried them first the first time today and tho my expectations are always high, they did not fail to impress. Cup of coffee was immediately addressed as soon as I sat down, which is always nice-not having to wait. Coffee could be a bit better as I drink mine black, no sugar. Went nicely with the food, but normally I have 2 cups, but settled for just one. Waitress was very friendly without being overbearing. I was given ample time to read menu and make my decision. My order came out in the perfect amount of time and it was delicious I ordered an American cheese omelette with side of bacon and home fries (hf come with the omelette). No toast for me. Home fries were nicely done; crispy on the outside and tender and creamy inside. The omelette had just a wee bit too much cheese, but the omelette was light and fluffy and very near perfect. Bacon was cooked just right. The restaurant itself was warm and welcoming, with some historical accents, in the form of some antiques placed nicely throughout. Very clean with tables arranged and spaced well so as not to feel crowded. There are some seats in the window facing out with a nice wooden counter. Stepping up to pay, (which btw, was extremely reasonable) I noticed a lot of attractive desserts in the bright, clear glass case, so I purchased a blueberry turnover to go. Tho I don't know if they do much, if any baking on premises, it was fresh and scrumptious. I look forward to my next visit, as there are more items I wish to try here. A+ read more

I've lived down the block from this place since it opened. Actually I believe the owners live about 5 or 6 houses from my former lake house. I have no idea why it took me so long to come here and eat. My son and I came here after karate class to try "the best French toast in the nation" and have some breakfast. It's very well decorated inside and has a very homey feel to it. Pastries and meats are in the deli case, you can smell the fresh coffee brewing and the people there are friendly and warm. My son had the French toast and eggs which was a huge portion of food and very well prepared. I had an egg white and ham sandwich on a bagel that was also very well portioned and cooked perfectly. I also had a cup of freshly made coffee which was excellent on a cold and snowy day. Like most places, I try to look at all the positives and then try to find one of two things I would do differently or that the venue could do better and honestly, I couldn't find anything that could've been done better here. The French toast was incredible, the eggs were fluffy and well prepared and my sandwich was great. We cannot wait to go back and will be doing so soon. Great job Old Stone!! read more

This was my first visit to Old Stone. It was a Saturday at 10:00am. I took a seat at the counter. Influenced by the best french toast sign outside, I ordered that with sausage patty and tea. I enjoyed my meal while watching early Saturday morning programs on the two televisions and listening to local 102.3 WSUS-FM radio, playing hits from the 80's until now on iHeart radio. The food doesn't come with the unhealthy sugary powder on top which I took in account when determining the taste. I did more syrup then I usually do to add flavor. I'm still trying to figure out the "established in 1843" designation next to the "celebrating our first year" notation on the menu cover. read more

Every time I pass the shuttered building that used to be the Old Stone I am saddened. It was one of the finest little eateries anywhere. It appears to have been a victim of the pandemic. I am guessing that is what happened. If anyone knows why this wonderful little place is not open again I would love to hear the reason. My best friend I decided to do lunch together and looked at several places on Yelp. We found this one and it looked interesting and had good reviews. We decided to give it a try. Even though we had checked out where it was, we almost drove by it. This place is sort of like the TARDIS, appearing smaller on the outside. than it is on the inside. I decided to go off the breakfast menu and he decided to opt for lunch. Neither was a mistake. The food was very good, the staff wonderful and the price is reasonable. We stopped in for a late breakfast. We were so impressed. Everything was made from scratch and very delicious. Incredible Boston crème donuts that are made on site. If we lived locally, this would certainly become our regular spot. All three of us were very happy with everything we ordered. We even splurged on homemade ice cream to end our meal. I love this place. There are quite a few good diners in the area; this might be my favorite. It's a little well appointed bistro style place and the food is fantastic. They brag about their french toast on the sign and it didn't disappoint. Everything is fresh, the coffee is excellent (important for me) and the service is attentive without being intruding. OMG!! Quaint storefront with antique tin ceiling creates great atmosphere with friendly staff and great service! Hard roll breakfast sandwiches are a favorite but the best is the French toast! Went on Yelp and saw the reviews. Amazing. Let me tell you the five star reviews on here are correct but it's even better. I'd say 6 stars. Other than the amazing food, the staff and the atmosphere and cleanliness is superb. The bakery and Danish products are made here in the cafe. Fresh ground Coffee from all over the world. My omelette was perfect and my friends French toast incredible according to him. Just ask for Rosita. This could have been an easy 4 or 5 stars for breakfast , food was very good . Thought the western omelette came with home fries, mine didn't . Wife had French toast , said it was very good , but she was still hungry with only being served 2 thin small slices . Coffee was very good . We both left feeling still a little hungry . Would love to return to this place and give it another try , but , when we got home , we were told that we smelled badly of grease . The place is small with 4 tables and the exhaust system is either not working properly or it was not turned on . Customer service is terrible. I ordered roast beef sandwich and the sauce they put on burned my nose and mouth. I asked if they can just remake it with mayo, lettuce and tomato, that's it. They took the same roast beef with the sauce still on it, remade it and put cheese on it. I didn't want that. I told them to take it back and forget about it. The lady/ manager gave me a dirty look the whole time as my bf finished his sandwich. She had the nerve to still charge me for the sandwich I barely ate, which was horrible anyway. If they didn't charge me for the sandwich or at least apologized about it I would of came back but giving me a dirty look isn't right. I work in the food industry so I know customer service is important. I will never return here. read more
