This cozy restaurant (which literally means a joyous, small kitchen serving noodles and congee) was a little out of the way but as a foodie, you'll probably agree that you don't mind traveling a distance for good food. CHJM is a small Cantonese restaurant that specializes in noodles and congee (rice soup). They also serve Cantonese dishes so this restaurant is ideal to come and order family style to share. One member was a little under the weather so she ordered rice soup and won ton noodles but that didn't stop us from ordering popular dishes such as dried scallop egg white fried rice, sea bass braised with tofu and sautéed pea shoots with dried scallops. These three dishes were amazing and executed very well. All members of my group knew that when asked what I wanted to eat, my reply was "steamed chicken." So we also ordered that. However, little did we know that the chicken would be prepared "twice cooked" so the chicken came out over cooked and sadly, a disappointment. The soy sauce over the dry, bone-in chicken couldn't save the dish and was a flop. My cousin and his buddies are also foodies who appreciates "Chinese soul food" so they also ordered pre-cleaned book tripe where the coloring turned me off. I'm used to eating "bleached" book tripe and had a hard time embracing its natural state. I also had a hard time with boiled goose intestines. It had a chewy and rubbery texture with no distinct flavor. The ginger, green onion and soy sauce dressing couldn't elevate the dish for me. Just not my cup of tea. We also had steamed whole fish that I passed that evening. After my horrific "fish bone stuck in my throat" incident several weeks ago in China, I now tend to pass eating whole fish if the bones are small. But from what my dining mates reported, the fish was cooked well and they polished it off. Because the restaurant is small, it's quite cramped and you need to "huddle together" while eating so remember to have good hygiene. Eat a breath mint prior to coming here and/or remember to use deodorant. :p Overall, a pleasant meal that night with the exception of over cooked chicken and exotic dishes. Highly recommend CHJM as we generally found the food tasty with decent service.

Highlight Item: Fried Whole Yellow Croaker, this is a specialty dish, the fish is lightly salted overnight to create that natural "Umami", they slowly fried the whole fish until golden brown and the whole fish is crispy on the outside and tender & juicy inside!! This was SO good after a night of drinking and mean whisky breath. The instant noodles are perfectly low-key and great for absorbing all the alcohol. Chicken was delicious and all of it is "activated" by pouring burning oil on the green onions and chicken. Pork Chop Bun: The noodles were enough for me but I really wanted to try this. The cafe inside is very small and crowded whether you go for breakfast or lunchtime. The space is very limited and if you consider yourself taller than the average person in Hong Kong, be very careful when moving through to sit or stand as there are various ceiling heights in the old building. Service is alright and efficient as most HK cha chaan tengs are expected to be however, I didn't like the attitude of one of the servers who brought out my table's meal as it was not what was ordered. She questioned our order and it was very clear that no one in my group ordered it, yet she insisted that we did. After a bit of back and forth, she decided to swap out the meal for the one we actually ordered. The food was A-OK, nothing particularly spectacular. The toasted and buttered bun was decent but didn't have enough butter not toasty char. The macaroni noodle soup was on the bland side. The hot dog and eggs were very typical. Waiting is a common past time here, so try to aim for a pre-noon arrival. Their stuffed toasts are legendary and are indeed the real deal. The salted egg yolk toast is fun to eat and film, but the taro custard (香芋流沙西多士) is next level good. The lava that flows from within makes this the ultimate dessert item, and should be on everyone's table. Their XO stir fried radish cubes (XO醬炒蘿蔔糕), along with the XO fried rice rolls (XO醬炒腸粉) are two of my favorite items. The dim sum items are fairly standard (especially the shrimp dumplings), but the shrimp stuffed rice rolls are very good. The shrimp toast is not my usual kind of order, but this place definitely specializes in it. The service is warm and very quick with everything: taking orders, bringing food, and getting the check.
