Pork chop noodle soup with egg
    Jonathan C.

This place had the best HK French toast that we tried. Definitely order that! We also ordered egg and porkchop noodle soup. It's ramen instant noodles and the best part was that the pork chop was pretty much boneless. It's a little difficult to spot the restaurant, we walked past it at least twice and then realized it's in-between the flower shop and souvenir shop... The sign is only in Chinese characters so if you're looking for "Si Yik" you'll be pretty lost like us hah

Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. Aside from the classic breakfast items, they also offer many delicious rice and noodle dishes in the afternoon.

We got here fairly early, so we didn't have to wait for a table. Service was as expected - quick, efficient, and no nonsense. A tell-tale sign of a good HK cafe. The food just hit the spot for me, bringing me right back to my childhood memories of eating this on weekend mornings at our local HK cafe. Note that they don't accept foreign credit cards, so be prepared with cash, Octopus, or Alipay.

A Hong Kong cafe is like heaven for a stoner who has the munchies (just to make it clear, I've never been stoned. At least not for a long time!) But I do see the appeal for someone with these cravings. Everything comes with gravy or some type of tomato sauce. They make Coke Cola ice creams floats. French toast squares with ice cream. Funky right? But we ordered: Baked Pork Chop: this was a decent version. I think one more pork chop in the entree would have made it complete. The tomato sauce with the rice was a nice blend. Mixed grill: this was my wife's entree and she didn't like it much. She said it was ok. Flat noodles: that's what it's called in the menu but I know it as Chow Fun. I always like this dish and Kam Kee makes it decent. Service was proficient and friendly. My wife said it's a three star eatery but what takes this place into four category is they put effort into the design or ambience of the cafe whereas many places don't invest in that. It's a nice looking restaurant with decently satisfying comfort food.

This review is only for the pineapple bun…read more I do not recommend. On multiple, multiple food review sites writing about the best pineapple bun in HK, Kam Fung made the list. Happened to be in wan chai today so why not- We got take out for two buns- one with butter and one without. But even before opening the package we knew something was wrong. Each bun was wrapped in plastic, but was so extremely heavy. How could a bun be so heavy? Opening it and taking a bite - it's like chewy raw dough. I'm not sure if it was really raw, but that's what it felt like. I couldn't finish it. I didn't even want to take a second bite, really. I'm actually very surprised at the good reviews on the bun here. Its one of the few times that Google reviews are more fair and accurate than Yelp reviews for me. Don't trust the lists!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't get this bun!!!!

Perhaps it's just not for my kind of tastebud... my younger son liked his macaroni in soup. My older one did not like his "bor lor yao"... which is the pineapple bun with a thick piece of butter... all the baos were very dense... and not fluffy like other ones we've tried. The only saving grace - the Chicken Pie! It's crusty and flavorful. Anyway, small shop, a few tables and you will be sharing with strangers if you're solo. They do pour the left over soups into a bucket right underneath your seats... so not quite sanitary... but you'll live. Bring lots of wet naps. Cash Only.

Several staff speak English but we weren't given any English menus so we relied on Google Translate. Like the majority of cha chaan tengs, service here is quick! We didn't particularly feel rushed when deciding what to order but the restaurant wasn't ever full so maybe it's different during peak hours. When you're done eating, pay at the front. You can also grab some of the baked goods to-go at the front. We ordered the classics to share. The Pineapple Bun was so good that i ordered another one to go. The crust is crunchy and sweet, with a fluffy inside...this definitely could be in the top running for best buns in the city. The scrambled eggs were buttery and silky, very different from regular American scrambled eggs. And finally, the macaroni soup had a very simple, clean broth but was very flavorful. If you need something to warm you up, this is perfect. Overall, delicious meal and I left so satisfied. This was the perfect end to our Hong Kong trip and I can't wait to be back!

The bread was soft with top crispy,, maybe cause of the butter but it wasn't warm when it came out. I also ordered one with bbq pork and was given a regular pineapple bun instead. One day we just showed up before 5 pm and were seated right away. The strategy is to dine at this place before the lunch/dinner crowd! We were amazed by the varieties of dishes on the menu! It took us 10 minutes to decide on our favorites. We ordered sizzling mixed grill with steak, chicken fillet, pork chop, bacon, and sausage (all for HK$85 or US$11) and sizzling chicken fillet with fried shrimp (HK$78 or US$10). Each came with choices of rice, spaghetti, or vegetables and choices of black pepper sauce, garlic sauce or gravy! We also ordered fish fillet, black fungus, and mixed mushroom with rice in soup (HK$45 or US$5.80)! OMG! First, the sizzling mixed grill had 5 kinds of meat - steak, chicken fillet, pork chop, bacon, and sausage. The serving was good for two people. We didn't know better and put in three orders (for three people). One order was with rice and garlic sauce. The other two orders were with spaghetti and black pepper sauce. All the meat was tender, soft, and tasty! In the end, we took almost half of the dishes home. The sizzling chicken fillet with fried shrimp was prepared excellently! The fish fillet, black fungus, and mixed mushroom came in a bowl. It was surprisingly good with no fishy smell! The servers were very attentive, friendly, and polite. I highly recommend this little cafe with big dishes! Definitely, we shall return and try other items on the main menu! BTW: be sure to grab some pineapple buns on your way home! They have a small counter outside the restaurant selling the pastries. The pineapple bun has crispy top and soft! Simply scrumptious!
