First time having Sri Lanken food at Hotal Colombo. Similar to Indian food in a lot of ways with an extra notch of spiciness. I came here for brunch which is offered as a set menu. The first item is a chick pea appetizer than comes a trey of condiments/sides and finally you have a choice of a main course. Overall the food is tasty and the price is pretty reasonable especially for a black sheep restaurant. Food: 3.75 stars Service: 4 stars Environment: 3.5 stars Value: 4 stars Overall: 3.75 stars Recommendations: egg hopper, fried fish with coleslaw I had the bacon and egg hopper paired with the chicken Kathy. The curry was a tad spicy and made for a good dipping sauce for the hopper crepe. I did wish the hopper was a bit more crunchy but overall I enjoyed the dish. I made the mistake of thinking the chili sauce that was paired with the hopper was tomato paste and ate too much with my first bite. The fried fish was my favorite of the two mains. The fish was nicely fried and I enjoyed the crust and preparation of the fish. The coleslaw had some nice acidity and flavoring from the turmeric. It wasn't too over powered by the sauce which I find typically to be the problem with coleslaw. The dessert of the day was a maple tart, which was nice. Have you ever wanted to eat in a Wes Andersen movie? Then you've found the right place. Hotal Colombo has a rogue spelling and rogue decor but somehow makes it work. The place is cozy but decorated with mirrors and enough light pink and blue to trigger your memories of Mendl's from Grand Budapest Hotel. Incredible movie. Wes Andersen is a visionary The service is fantastic and our waitress let us know although this restaurant wasn't designed with an Andersen film in mind some other Black Sheep restaurant was. This Black Sheep food conglomerate is like the Amazon of the overpriced HK scene they're everywhere The food itself is SPICY - be warned. Order milk or something to go with your meal if you're a spice wuss like me. Otherwise - be ready to bust out your phone and Google because you will not recognize any of the food names. @hotalcolombo is one of the only Sri Lankan restaurants in the city so we were looking forward to eating here. Not sure if it's considered to be 100% authentic but as with many restaurants, it's probably leaning a little towards fusion to appease local tastes. Regardless, it was still pretty good. The chilli fried potatoes were delicious. Can't go wrong with spicy fried potatoes. Probably the most authentic thing in the menu, the hoppers were light and airy. Perfect for sopping up sambol and other bits. The fried shrimp was arguably the best item, however "fusiony" it was. Cooked to perfection and tons of flavour. But my favourite dish was the kothu. You can tell they used freshly baked bread in it. It had the perfect texture, sometimes crispy, chewy, and light. One thing that stuck out to me though was the size of the table. We had 4 ppl but had a tiny little table that was hard to navigate. The food was solid and the service was good so I recommend this place if you are adventurous and want something out of the ordinary. Hotal Colombo is a small restaurant on Elgin Street. They have a nice open kitchen with a small bar, this allows the customers to watch what is happening in there. The staff is very friendly and very patient, they stay friendly even when a guest is asking for 10 minutes similar questions before taking a decision on what to order. I had Masala Dosa with Sambhar, Coconut Chutney and Chicken Curry with Paratha. The Dosa was OK but not among the best I had in the past. I'm not sure but I had the feeling that the Dosa was reheated. The Chicken Curry was very nice, spicy but still had a lot of flavors. I will definitely come back I need to try the Dosa's read more

It was my first time eating Sri Lankan food and I was pleased by the quality/variety of food and the perfect service. We sat at the bar facing the opened kitchen and chat we the staff for a little bit. Sweet staff explaining how the food was made and how the flavors are mixed together. read more
