Char Shiu and egg rice
Vincent Q.

Hong Kong style cafe with a really simple menu. They are known for their scrambled egg dishes, which use Japanese eggs. I had the char siu scrambled egg rice and it is one of the better ones I had. I sometimes feel a bit gross after eating the HK scrambled eggs because of the cream and butter they add but that isn't the case here. Good value at 55 HKD to me but some may feel expensive because you can get this dish cheaper. Food: 4 stars Value: 4.5 stars Environment: 3.5 stars Recommendations: char siu egg rice, grilled chicken with rice

Japanese scrambled egg, BBQ pork rice

With a name like Mon Kee and a logo of a monkey, you'd guess that their specialty would be banana related, or at least something tropical. Nope, it's eggs. Just hearty scrambled eggs with soy sauce and rice. Ok, maybe a little fancier than that. A lot of times, there are other things mixed in with the eggs, like BBQ pork or shrimp. The style of eggs that they're known for is "Japanese style" scrambled eggs. They feel smoother and less dried out than your regular HK cafe variety. They've perfected this technique and it comes through in their signature dish: BBQ Pork and Egg Rice. The BBQ pork isn't the best around, but somehow mixed with the smooth egg, it's perfect. Along with some green onion, sweet soy sauce, and wonderfully cooked "al dente" rice, this makes for a perfect lunchtime craving. Of course, they also have other egg related and non-egg related dishes. You can get your classic HK favourites here, like ham and macaroni and pineapple bun with butter. They've even got pork liver with mac. If you want something crispy, they serve a pretty good looking pork cutlet rice with some perfect sunny side up eggs on top. Cold drinks at HKD $2 (part of a lunch set) are served in a chilled metal cup for extra chilliness on these hot summer days. This is a regular HK cafe setting but a level above your most basic and run-down diners. The food comes fast and cheap with lunch sets starting at HKD $50. Because it hits all three checkmarks of a quality lunch destination (cheap, fast, tasty), lines start forming at noon sharp. So if you're coming in with a group of 3+, better get out of the office early! (64/100) - 2017

Another cha chaan teng serving delicious local food! I had their pig liver macaroni in chicken broth, along with toast drizzled in condensed milk and scrambled eggs. The pig liver macaroni was tasty and the broth made it very light. The toast was delicious and went very well with their perfectly done scrambled eggs. Prices are fair and affordable. Highly recommended!

Scrambled Eggs with BBQ Pork with Sweet Soy Sauce (5/5)

If you're a fan of gooey egg dishes and sweet soy sauce, you need to try this place out. Also has English menus which is nice for any tourists who want to visit. Friends got the Scrambled Eggs with BBQ Pork with Sweet Soy Sauce (5/5) while I got Scrambled Eggs with BBQ Pork and Shrimp with Sweet Soy Sauce (5/5). They were both delicious, and it depends on if you prefer BBQ pork or Shrimp. I wanted both so got both! Also got the Lemon Iced Tea (4/5) which comes with the meal. That was really refreshing but you can find similar quality lemon teas at most places. Warning: I've been told they only serve the BBQ Pork during lunch and instead serve Beef with their scrambled eggs for dinner. Not exactly sure what they serve for breakfast, haha, but be aware that the menu changes throughout the day.

Small menu and they serve till it sold out / limited quantity sold each day.

Mon Kee has raised the bar for a generic dish like chashu egg over rice by my book. I can never just have any chashu egg rice. I have never have such a flavorful Chinese style bbq pork with runny eggs over rice. The eggs were so silky while the bbq sauce was just so perfect. I would say it is almost like a teriyaki sauce but better for those that have never have Chinese style bbq pork. And with the special flavor also comes with the chef's specialty. The cha Shu sauce that they used are made in house, not just a bought sauce. No wonder it was so flavorful. Mon Kee has a pretty small menu in comparison to other HK style cafe, but they all have their unique flavor and twist. Another dish that I tried there is their pig liver with ginger in a fresh chicken broth macaroni. It also comes with toast and scramble eggs. I know it might sound very weird. But as a Chinese dish, pig liver soup is a very common soup base , but yet it is not common to eat over with macaroni in hk style cafe. I thought it is a very interesting and clever dish. Since most people wants to eat more healthy but yet wanted to have their easy, quick go to HK cafes. This is just the perfect dish for it. The broth is very good and just like most soup places, they really make their broth with fresh ingredients. I love the broth. From their drink list, I tried their ginger milk tea other then the traditional milk tea. It is also great for winter when it is cold outside. I enjoy their choice of fusion / twist in their menu to differentiate themselves out of other HK style cafe but yet still kept the tradition of the western/ chinese( most importantly the Hong Kong tradition) mix of food. A highly recommended cafe to try. On a side note, if you wanted to come for lunch on weekdays, you have to come before 12 to avoid waiting in line to get a table, or probably after 2 pm. I arrived at 1145am. And within 15 min this place is completely filled with a line forming at the door. It is very close to office building around. And good food can't hide.

But for me it's different. A Hong Kong cafe is like heaven for a stoner who has the munchies (just to make it clear, I've never been stoned. At least not for a long time!) But I do see the appeal for someone with these cravings. Everything comes with gravy or some type of tomato sauce. They make Coke Cola ice creams floats. French toast squares with ice cream. Funky right? But we ordered: Baked Pork Chop: this was a decent version. I think one more pork chop in the entree would have made it complete. The tomato sauce with the rice was a nice blend. Mixed grill: this was my wife's entree and she didn't like it much. She said it was ok. Flat noodles: that's what it's called in the menu but I know it as Chow Fun. I always like this dish and Kam Kee makes it decent. Service was proficient and friendly. My wife said it's a three star eatery but what takes this place into four category is they put effort into the design or ambience of the cafe whereas many places don't invest in that. It's a nice looking restaurant with decently satisfying comfort food.

The milk tea was very good. Gave 3 stars as the beef was a bit chewy. Chicken would have been better.

This review is only for the pineapple bun…read more I do not recommend. On multiple, multiple food review sites writing about the best pineapple bun in HK, Kam Fung made the list. Happened to be in wan chai today so why not- We got take out for two buns- one with butter and one without. But even before opening the package we knew something was wrong. Each bun was wrapped in plastic, but was so extremely heavy. How could a bun be so heavy? Opening it and taking a bite - it's like chewy raw dough. I'm not sure if it was really raw, but that's what it felt like. I couldn't finish it. I didn't even want to take a second bite, really. I'm actually very surprised at the good reviews on the bun here. Its one of the few times that Google reviews are more fair and accurate than Yelp reviews for me. Don't trust the lists!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't get this bun!!!!

This Cha Chaan Teng is really for old school HK'ers. I was not a fan of any of their "baos"…read more.. Their milk tea was not great either. It didn't have the milk tea flavor... Perhaps it's just not for my kind of tastebud... my younger son liked his macaroni in soup. My older one did not like his "bor lor yao"... which is the pineapple bun with a thick piece of butter... all the baos were very dense... and not fluffy like other ones we've tried. The only saving grace - the Chicken Pie! It's crusty and flavorful. Anyway, small shop, a few tables and you will be sharing with strangers if you're solo. They do pour the left over soups into a bucket right underneath your seats... so not quite sanitary... but you'll live. Bring lots of wet naps. Cash Only.

Although it was busy on my first visit, it didn't feel overwhelming, nor did I feel rushed and herded by staff. Orders are done through the QR code on the table, but my phone service was wonky that day and one of the employees was very nice and took my order. That did lead me to panic ordering the HOTTEST egg toast, but that's my own fault and I surely paid the consequence. I like spicy food, but that lacked flavor and only burned. They have a big menu, including vegetarian options and famous HK bakery items like egg tarts and pineapple bread. The regular egg toast is delicious, a heaping serving of creamy eggs over thick toast. Then of course I had to try the famous Hong Kong Milk tea, which was also delicious. It's made with a full bodied black tea and has a rich earthy flavor. No sugar added so it's not sweet unless you make it so. When I was finished, I paid at the register and was on my way.

We got a char siu macaroni soup, bolo bao, and truffle scrambled egg toast. There was a lot of egg on the toast but the truffle tasted more like a dark chocolate crumble? Not sure if that's what it was supposed to be but still appetizing. Macaroni soup was delicious. I just enjoy pasta in soup. Lol. The bolo bao was a bit of a disappointment due to the bread being cold. I don't know if there was an option to just tell them we wanted it hot. Also ordered Hong Kong milk tea but the waiter misheard even though he repeated it and sent a sweet tea instead. Not bad for a comfort food spot.

Hong Kong Cafes with a noodle focus almost always end up being my preferred places to chow down…read more Chui Hing (潮興魚蛋粉) is combines no nonsense service with killer food, along with affordable pricing and 24 hour availability to boot. The pretense is non-existent and locals (including myself!) seem to love it here. So like many noodle spots in HK, this place is fairly small. No big tables for 5+ but quite a few small'ish round tables that are good for solo eats or the invaluable food companion. The aroma coming from the semi-open kitchen should be enough inspiration for folks to know what they want upon arrival, but just in case they have the menus outlined along the wall. An easy way to start? Try a wonton and beef brisket with your choice of noodles. The wontons are somewhat pillowy in texture and full of flavor while the beef brisket is braised well while maintaining a perfectly chewy bite. The noodle variety is good, with egg / rice noodles winning over the crowd though I feel the e-fu noodles take the cake. Lastly, do not sleep on the beef tendon. It's practically butter when done right. Chui Hing does fancy itself as a HK style cafe, so other dishes like congee, fried fish skin, fried rice, may appear on the menu, focus on what to stack in your bowl instead. The staff is really helpful and welcoming.

The prices are also very reasonable. I bought beef ball and wonton, wonton noodle soup. I didn't ask to have the noodles separate, but they still retained a good amount of chew by the time I got back up top the hotel. You can pay a little extra anywhere to ask them pack separate. The wontons are ok, beef balls are good, noodles are good, soup okay. The milk tea wasn't very strong but has a nice authentic back flavor. Everything was ready in under 5 minutes. Very good for takeout!
