Canto breakfast!
Tiffany S.

I've visited Tsui Wah's window once before for a pineapple bun, but this was our first time dining here. Because it's a chain, Tsui Wah has various locations throughout Hong Kong & they have standardized, reliable dishes/flavors - we chose this one just because it's close the Hong Kong station. They were quick, efficient but were by no means rude (take note Australian Dairy Company). For breakfast before 11:30am, you can really only choose between 6 sets. We had the following - *Set A (Shredded Squid & Ham w/Macaroni in Soup served with sunny-side-up Eggs, Sausage & Butter Roll - HKD 39) - I ordered this one because it was the most similar to what I used to order at canto cafes back in Los Angeles! This was actually a LOT of food & it's basically only about USD $5. Good flavors - can't go wrong. The butter roll was so soft and tasty as well. *Set C (Shredded Pork, Dry Shrim & Preserved vegetable rice noodles in soup. Served w/ Buttered Crispy Bun - HKD 38) - The flavors were fantastic. I loved the buttered crispy bun too! We upgraded both our sets to milk tea & we also got a pineapple bun. Once you're finished with your meal, you pay at the front. Tsui Wah is a solid place to get cantonese breakfast & pineapple buns! 193/365

Fried flat rice noodles

The food was good, but not impressive. Started with the Deep fried spinach/shrimp dumplings and shrimp wontons, very good flavors. Gave this a five star rating. The sizzling king prawns with fried noodles was decent. The noodles were pan fried crispy but the flavor was a bit bland. The spicy soy/chili sauce on the table saved the dish. We also had the fried flat rice noodles, which were ok.

On the way to work? Tsui Wah! Just drank too much beer and need some food? Tsui Wah! Touring Hong Kong? Tsui Wah! Bad credit? Tsui Wah! Okay, maybe not that last one. But this restaurant is still an iconic point about Hong Kong; a true Hong Kong experience is not complete without a trip (or trips if you live here) to Tsui Wah. The menu items look so appealing. I had an order of "Crispy Bun and Condensed Milk" which if I recall correctly was around $17 HKD (about $2.18 USD right now). I also had a drink that consisted of grass jelly in coconut milk. Both of these dishes were Denny's quality! A quick Google search and you'll discover there is a hard, process-oriented science that goes through the Tsui Wah dining experience. There is an average total consumption time of 40 minutes per table, and you can see that the servers are hustling even when the restaurant is not busy. Speaks true to the Hong Kong capitalist culture! With that said, this is not a place for customer service. You are not here to be greeted warmly with a smile, and you're not here to get preferential treatment. Go in, get your food, eat, get out. Simple as that. Some might say that's a little cutthroat, especially for us folks from the USA that are accustomed to a bit more pampered customer service treatment. Cheers and see you next time, Tsui Wah!

Combo breakfast

It was a rainy day as I was wandering the streets of Hong Kong, when Tsui Wah looked so welcoming. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted being asked "How many". In my limited canto, I asked for a table for 1, and they sent me downstairs (top level looked packed). There was plenty of room, so the server downstairs pointed me to a few open tables for me to choose from. The menu was pretty extensive, and I wasn't super hungry, but more glad to get out of the rain and eat something warm, so I picked a combo meal without really thinking, just pointing at something that looked good. This ended up being a HK milk tea, beef satay noodle, scrambled eggs, and a roll. A little too much food, but so cheap (in my opinion), about $5 USD. The milk tea was so good, I added a hint of sugar and it was perfect. The beef noodle hit the spot to warm me up. The eggs were nice and fluffy, and the roll smothered with butter was good, but I was too full to finish both. The nice thing was, I didn't feel rushed or hurried. It was hard to tell, but they electronically marked my check with my order, so there was only the server's initials written on it. Once I had researched my next stop, finished my tea, I asked to close my bill, which they asked me to do back upstairs. Took the check upstairs, and the cashier electronically scanned the piece of paper, bill was paid, and I was on my way. Relatively easy process, quick service, and good food.

Super poop, but Tsui Wah is just not how I remembered it years ago. When you walk in, you kind of don't know what's going on. Should you grab a table? Will you get seated? After being seated what happens? Flag down someone to get their attention to make an order. Even then it is difficult, but I'm not sure why since the menu is in English and Chinese so it should be fairly easy to point and order. Aside from the signature milk tea and condensed milk toast, nothing else I love here. Got us a dish that was on their top seller list, but the taste was just not what I would call Cantonese traditional. This is a chain restaurant so you'll find that prices are slightly higher than the other cha chang tangs. Maybe I should propose to you to go for breakfast only. Skip this for dinner!

What i dream about when i've been away from HK for too long

Now this is what i crave when i have not been in HK in a while. Yes the servers are generally rude. Yes the place could be much cleaner. Yes, you may have to share a table with a stranger. But the fish ball/beef tendon ho-fun (flat noodle) soup is my all time favourite HK comfort food. Have to wait till 11am for them to serve it though as it's not available on the brekkie menu!

Breakfast set. Fish ball and Hokkaido pork with vermacilli noodles. Served with Hong Kong style milk tea. (Cold drinks with extra charge)
Vivian K.

A chain Hong Kong style restaurant with an array of menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, both Chinese and Western. The restaurant gets busy during peak hours. Sharing a table with strangers are considered normal. I would recommend the Hong Kong style milk tea to go with your meal.

Pork cartilage with fish cakes in Tom Yum Kung broth
Justin W.

A reliable favourite, even if it is just a place you go to, staggering out of a bar/club and need something in your belly to offset the booze! For me, has to be the pork cartilage with fish cake in fish noodle soup. They have some Westerns dishes (tailored to HKG tastes) as well as Malaysian curries. My guests were a little wary, but the HK noodles and wonton noodles they ordered were good! Ample but filling and tasty and open all hours! They have stopped with the free cup of tea which is unfortunate and it seems like they are really looking to upgrade all their restaurants which means same food, just costs you more. Service is basic and you take your bar code receipt to the cashier by the exit to pay cash, credit or octopus (that is an HKG payment system).

Scrambled eggs and bun.

This place is solid for Hong Kong cafe food. Went here on my last day in Hong Kong due to its proximity to the Hong Kong MTR station. I got one of the breakfast sets that came with eggs, instant noodles with satay beef, a bun, and tea. The tea was the highlight, tasted fruity (dates and other various fruits). Instant noodles and eggs were pretty standard, the bun wasn't impressive.

Durian Pineapple Bun!!!
Lydia H.

Hungry and on your way to work? Tsui Wah is the perfect place to grab some breakfast! I know that this is a chain, but nothing beats convenience. They have a selection of bread outside to pick from. The selection is the standard options you would have at a Chinese bakery. Super efficient and fast. So far, I've tried the red bean pineapple bun ($8) and the normal pineapple bun ($7). The top was a little crunchier than I'm used to, but the bread inside was nice and soft. Definitely fresh! The price is also not bad for being the in Central/Sheung Wan area. I noticed that they have a Durian Pineapple bun! I didn't get it this morning because I didnt want to stink up the office! I will be back to try the Durian Pineapple bun though! I love durian!

A classic HK institution with many branches across the city and overseas. Serves HK-style comfort food in a casual restaurant setting. Been here many times for breakfast, lunch and late-night food. Think they open quite late and some branches is 24/7. Signature dishes and commentaries below: - Fish ball and Fish cake in Soup: Simple homey comfort food. Would recommend if you want sth soupy / comforting. Fishballs and fishcakes are both good. Tastes a bit bland but that's what I like from this sort of dish - Crispy bun and condensed milk: classic HK breakfast item. Buns toasted to perfect crispiness with butter and sweetened milk. Would def recommend this for breakfast. Should have while hot though cause the bread becomes quite chewy once cold - Milk tea: too milky for my taste. I usually like milk tea with a stronger tea taste and less milk - Beef brisket curry with rice: ok - standard good / as expected for this dish - Sizzling king prawn w/ fried noodles: ok. The noodles are quite good - crispy with gooey gravy. Prawns are big and fresh but probably should give more prawns relative to noodles

Their popularity was at an all-time high just before the pandemic and has remained one of Sai Wan's most frequent local eateries. To no one's surprise, the seating and layout are not group friendly and it can be very cramped. Sharing tables is a big possibility, and I'd come here with no more than 3-4 folks. Waiting is a common past time here, so try to aim for a pre-noon arrival. Their stuffed toasts are legendary and are indeed the real deal. The salted egg yolk toast is fun to eat and film, but the taro custard (香芋流沙西多士) is next level good. The lava that flows from within makes this the ultimate dessert item, and should be on everyone's table. Their XO stir fried radish cubes (XO醬炒蘿蔔糕), along with the XO fried rice rolls (XO醬炒腸粉) are two of my favorite items. The dim sum items are fairly standard (especially the shrimp dumplings), but the shrimp stuffed rice rolls are very good. The shrimp toast is not my usual kind of order, but this place definitely specializes in it. The service is warm and very quick with everything: taking orders, bringing food, and getting the check. The signature egg yolk is fun to cut into - giving you some real insta-worthy yolk porn, but is definitely heavy, so consider sharing. But for me, what won my heart was a delicious take on a childhood favorite - radish cakes: Chau Kee's versions are cut up and fried, so that the crisp fry-exterior gives way to a tacky and soft interior. Flavors of shrimp and seafood are present from the XO sauce. The menu is in both Chinese and English and full of pictures, so it's also gweilo-friendly!

I'm down if it's good food! Located in a residential area, I wasn't really expecting too much honestly. But I heard good word about it so why not give it a shot? Wow, for a neighborhood restaurant, this place was bomb! I had some dishes where I never had elsewhere before! We started with the fried pomfret salad. I love the fried fish, juicy, tender and mildly sweet. I wasn't a fan of the salad dressing though. It was like the thousand island from a bottle from the grocery aisle. I wish they make a good dressing. My favorite plate-licking dish was the shrimp angel hair with pumpkin sauce. Pumpkin sauce!? Large, succulent and crunchy shrimp with fresh shredded veggies mixed in sweet and buttery pumpkin sauce. How can you not like that? The flavors were really good and I was going bite after bite until I finished it without even knowing! My second fav was the crispy chicken with apricots and honey mustard sauce served on on a plate of spaghetti and veggies. Honey mustard is my favorite, and to combine that with crispy chicken? What a great idea! The chicken came out crispy and hot and the meat was tender and juicy. Love this dish! We wrapped up our meal with the famous chocolate souffle. Dang! That was good! Piping hot, creamy, sweet, slightly crispy on the outside and fluffy inside like a snowball! We got the vanilla flavor too but I liked the chocolate one better. The lady owner was there last night and she was bubbly and socializing with all the customers. Friendly and good service overall. Seating was a bit tight so make sure you make a reservation ahead of time or come early. Not only Asians come here, I saw a couple of westerners too enjoying not so authentic but delicious western food!

The cafe inside is very small and crowded whether you go for breakfast or lunchtime. The space is very limited and if you consider yourself taller than the average person in Hong Kong, be very careful when moving through to sit or stand as there are various ceiling heights in the old building. Service is alright and efficient as most HK cha chaan tengs are expected to be however, I didn't like the attitude of one of the servers who brought out my table's meal as it was not what was ordered. She questioned our order and it was very clear that no one in my group ordered it, yet she insisted that we did. After a bit of back and forth, she decided to swap out the meal for the one we actually ordered. The food was A-OK, nothing particularly spectacular. The toasted and buttered bun was decent but didn't have enough butter not toasty char. The macaroni noodle soup was on the bland side. The hot dog and eggs were very typical. The best thing we had were the milk teas. Prices are very normal for Central but would be considered overpriced in other areas of HK. I'm not planning to make a return unless someone requests it specifically or if I only want to grab a milk tea to-go.
