A typical cha chaan teng, or HK style cafe / diner, Capital Cafe offers a good combo of speed, taste, and price. For foreigners, the menu is in english as well and the staff knows enough to get by. Note that the usual cha chaan teng rules apply - know what you want quickly and pay only in cash, octopus, or alipay. Breakfast is solid and cheap. Just over $5 USD gets you a bowl of macaroni and ham soup (a staple), fried eggs, buttered toast, and coffee or tea.
Excellent cha chaan tang in wan chai. Good thing we got here before the noon time rush because the line got intense real quick. Quick service. Great value. Be prepared to place your order real quick and move along. This isn't the type of establishment to sit back & enjoy your meal. I love the entertainment memorabilia decor

Truffle scrambled eggs are amazingly good, we came back for seconds. Their macaroni and ham is a Hong Kong staple, but it's weird... Macaroni noodles with slices of ham on it, all sitting in a chicken broth... I really don't get it. So if you go, I suggest trying them both since they're both popular breakfast items in Hong Kong, but come back for the truffle scrambled eggs.
If one want to experience how a "real" Hong Kong Style Cafe the way it is, Capital Cafe 華星冰室 may worth trying. Small tiny tables that you need to share with other patrons. Cocky waitstaff who is efficient and friendly with a degree of sarcasm. Cheap fast comfort food. I just could not stop smiling listening to these waiters cracking silly jokes and comments within themselves. They even talks to customers with this friendly tone with a degree of sarcasm. Customer service one might not use to if you have been living overseas for awhile. Even after 9:30 am the place was packed. But the turnover was really fast and I was in and out within 20 minute. Come here for the experience and of course try the scrambled eggs which is so soft and fluffy.Milk tea still served in the traditional HK style tea cups. You won't regret that.
Classic HK Cafe. Cash only, order the scrambled eggs with truffle and toast. The eggs were smooth and silky - the truffle taste is subtle, but your not paying top dollar so just enjoy! Add some HK milk tea to that and you are good to go. The spot is cash-only.. if you forget to bring cash - it's hong kong so walk 1 block in any direction and you will find a mall with ATMs.
My very first HK Cafe experience and it did not disappoint! I was debating whether to come here or to Australian Dairy Company for soft scrambled eggs and decided here since it was closer to our hotel. No lie, my family had a hard time finding this place using Google Maps and Yelp BUT if you just look up at the signs you'll see it... LOL. Oops. We only had to wait 3 minutes to be seated but inside was PACKED. We has to squeeze in between 2 other parties (everyone is each others elbow space). If you don't read Chinese you can ask for their English menu (that's what we did). We ended up ordered 2 scrambled eggs on toast, 1 scrambled egg topped with black truffle on toast, 1 kaya coconut jam toast, 3 HK milk teas (hot), and a purple sweet potato & red bean drink. The soft scrambled eggs on that light, fluffy, and airy toast was amaaaazing! Never have I had eggs like that before. I believe they use Hokkaido milk? The truffle was OK... I feel like it didn't make THAT big of a difference. My whole family liked those eggs. The Kaya Coconut Jam Toast was pretty good. The same toast just topped with a thin-ish layer of sweet Singaporean jam. The HK milk tea was good. I don't think i'm a huge fan of milk tea made using condensed milk though. My dad really like it! And lastly, the sweet potato drink with red bean. It was good but mostly ice and red bean. Interesting to try but probably wouldn't recommend it. As for service, it's fast and efficient. Not a rude as I heard Australian Dairy Company is. You don't feel super rushed but I would't take my sweet sweet time since there is a line of people waiting outside to dine too. By the time we left the line went past 2 neighboring buildings. That's how you know a place is good and popular with the locals. Bottom line, get the scrambled eggs on toast. I might want to go back again one more time before I leave HK :)
We went to Capital Café based on the recommendations of the nice ladies at Mee Wah Bakery. We walked in to buy some pineapple cakes and almond cookies to bring home and my mom stopped to have a chat with the ladies working in the store. They pointed us to Capital Café (since I had left my list at home!!) and we weren't disappointed. I had the scrambled eggs with ham on toast along with a Hong Kong Milk Tea. Boy, I wish all the scrambled egg toasts in NYC were like this! The eggs were so smooth and silky and the toast was thick-cut and buttery. I could eat this all day! It was also so amazing to finally have a real, legitimate Hong Kong Milk Tea - it's even better than anything in NYC.
Can't beat that breakfast combo set. For $34 HKD (currently $5.40 USD), i had a coffee, toast, 2 scrambled eggs and macaroni soup with ham. Love how they make their scrambled eggs at these cafes. It's soft and super scrambled, just the way it should be cooked. The toast drizzled with condensed milk and peanut butter is an indulgence. It's sweet and sugar overload with some iced HK milk tea. Too good. They had an English menu and our waiter had an easy conversation with us in English. Phew!
I meannnn can we talk about the truffle scrambled egg toast?! It was SO good that we had it for breakfast two days in a row. Yup, it's that good. Both times were take out. They're SUPER fast about churning these out. Seems just as quick whether you're sitting in there or getting it to go. The truffle egg toast is about $7USD, and worth it. The eggs are perfectly scrambled and seasoned. The toast gives the gooey topping a good, sturdy base. The truffle sprinkled on top gives it a nice kick of extra flavor. Would 1000% recommend checking this spot out. It was very, very yummy. 5 stars!
Typical HK cafe with the best eggs ever!!!! Must try. We always went early morning to grab the morning set under 45HK$. Everything is served so fast and fresh.
This place is a classic. I came in just after opening and was seated pretty quickly for a table for 2. Its a fast paced and relatively cramped place, so it'd be helpful not to bring too much stuff. The wait may seem long, but everyone is trying to eat and get out asap, so it goes by pretty quickly. This place is not made for groups. I saw a group of 8 come in and they only had 6 available seats, so they sat 6 people first, and 2 people had to stand around awkwardly waiting for people at the book ends to finish before they could get the remaining 2 seats. The table situation is not the best, but its' HK, so you learn to live with it. The waitstaff are efficient but also a bit arrogant. Again, its very HK. The food is why you're here tho. The scrambled eggs are smooth and creamy and goes well with the white bread toast. I could eat that everyday. The milk tea was also very smooth and rich as well. Its definitely a dream breakfast for me. The eggs are what you came here for. I did not see many tables without it. Would eat here everyday if I could.
My local friends recommended this cafe for breakfast, and we were not disappointed. This HK cafe is owned by a celebrity and apparently lots of local celebrities dine there (though we didn't see any haha!) My party arrived on a weekday at 11.30AM, and there were plenty of seats. It quickly got crowded, though, and the place was full by 12PM. It may be good to decide what you want to get even before going, especially if it's your first time and if you don't really speak Cantonese. When it gets busy, the staff may be a little annoyed if you take too long. But honestly, compared to other HK cafes we have been to, the service here is already comparatively good. We got the breakfast set which consists of ham macaroni, eggs and buttered toast and a drink. (34 HKD) You get to choose either sunny side-up eggs (jian dan) or scrambled eggs (chao dan). We opted for scrambled eggs, and made sure to say the order correctly because the last time we went to a cafe, we didn't get our scrambled eggs because we didn't know how they referred to their eggs as.. Cold drinks are an additional 2 HKD. I had the iced milk tea, but it was tooooo sweet for my liking. Hot drinks come unsweetened, so it may be better to control the sweetness for those who are concerned. The buttered toast and eggs are awesome! The eggs are watery the way I like it, I guess with milk added? But they didn't taste too milky. I only had my toast after it got cold but it was still crunchy and pretty good. Must've been much better when it was freshly served. Ham macaroni was not bad, a little on the salty side but the broth tasted a lot like Campbell chicken soup which is sort of my comfort food. 34 HKD for a whole breakfast set is such a steal! I wish I had tried the headmaster toast, though.

I came in for breakfast twice during my stay in Hong Kong. Each time I walked in, the staff asked me how many and let me sit anywhere. Although it was busy on my first visit, it didn't feel overwhelming, nor did I feel rushed and herded by staff. Orders are done through the QR code on the table, but my phone service was wonky that day and one of the employees was very nice and took my order. That did lead me to panic ordering the HOTTEST egg toast, but that's my own fault and I surely paid the consequence. I like spicy food, but that lacked flavor and only burned. They have a big menu, including vegetarian options and famous HK bakery items like egg tarts and pineapple bread. The regular egg toast is delicious, a heaping serving of creamy eggs over thick toast. Then of course I had to try the famous Hong Kong Milk tea, which was also delicious. It's made with a full bodied black tea and has a rich earthy flavor. No sugar added so it's not sweet unless you make it so. When I was finished, I paid at the register and was on my way. read more

Chose a random Hong Kong cafe to get my macaroni fix. This one's a chain with a location also in Canada I believe. Menu is quite large and mostly breakfast items. We got a char siu macaroni soup, bolo bao, and truffle scrambled egg toast. There was a lot of egg on the toast but the truffle tasted more like a dark chocolate crumble? Not sure if that's what it was supposed to be but still appetizing. Macaroni soup was delicious. I just enjoy pasta in soup. Lol. The bolo bao was a bit of a disappointment due to the bread being cold. I don't know if there was an option to just tell them we wanted it hot. Also ordered Hong Kong milk tea but the waiter misheard even though he repeated it and sent a sweet tea instead. Not bad for a comfort food spot. read more

The chicken or the egg? At Capital Cafe you get the eggs of course! Capital Cafe is popular for their scrambled eggs and rightly so. This is a very typical "Hong Kong" cafe where you can get the traditional HK breakfast (Macaroni with ham, eggs, toast, and milk tea). They have other dishes but I personally haven't tried it because every time I come here I get the breakfast set. What's special about their eggs? I'm guessing they mix it with milk, and its a little soggy in a good way. Their milk tea has has a nice strong flavor; not very watered down or overly sweet. If you come here on a weekday during lunch time, expect a very long line.. but if you go after work hours its quite empty. Either way the service is always quick without being rude (like Australian Dairy can be sometime. I wouldn't come out of my way to eat here, but if I'm in Wan Chai its also a nice option to dine at. read more
This is one of my favorite cha caan tengs (local cafe) to eat at. Their eggs are super fluffy and tasty. Combine it with their toast, and it's like an orgasm in your mouth. Their macaroni noodles with ham is pretty tasty, but not something that blows my mind. Their unique menu items include scrambled eggs on toast with truffle and cheesy toast with truffle. Their Hong Kong style milk tea is also solid. One of my other favorite things about Capital Cafe is the staff. They're always happy and willing to talk to you. They have a really good sense of humor too. It's not one of those places that rushes you in and out. read more
I discovered this place mainly by coincidence. I saw someone on instagram posted a picture of their scrambled eggs with black truffle and I said... I want that! So I came here twice during my nine day stay in HK. I love this place. It's a HK café style that serves up really good café style food. Their scrambled eggs are oh so heavenly. Creamy, smooth, silky, creamy... my kids loved it. The black truffle added a nice pungency to it but it wasn't too overpowering. I also had their fried pork chop bun - perfectly fried pork chop that still retained its moisture, and they added wasabi mayo to it that gave it a nice kick. Another local favorite is the condensed milk bun - essentially a toasted bun with butter and condensed milk slather allover it. Sounds simple, and yes you can easily make it at home, but it's just so good! Prices are fair, service was really good - I would definitely come back over and over again. read more
I preferred Kam Fung (also in Wan Chai) in terms of HK breakfasts. The service is friendlier there and the food is slightly better. Maybe I'm just not a fan of the style of scrambled eggs served in these breakfast spots (too slimy and moist for my taste, something about it gives me the heebie-jeebies). The French toast was better, very eggy as well but great with the syrup they provided. Milk teas tied it all together well. These places have so many options that I'm sure I could find something I like, if I were to return. read more

Food: Eggs - I love their scrambled egg. Tastes good on toast. Or as a scrambled egg sandwich. Very smooth eggs. Milk tea - Great hot or cold. Good tea flavor to it, and not too sweet too. Truffle Toast - Named as Principal Toast (校長多士) as a nickname after a Hong Kong Singer. Comes with truffle and cheese on toast. Delicious. Not a large portion, so it should best be the side to the rest of your meal Service: Quick service, but friendly. You can tell they want you on your way, but they do it in a friendly manner. Benefit is that even if there is a line, it goes by quickly. Probably every other time I am in Wan Chai thinking about where to eat, I'll think about coming here. read more

Overall - 4.0/5.0 This was my first stop when I landed in HK on New Year's Eve! There was a bit of a queue but we were able to get a table within 5-10 minutes. We tried the piggy bun with condensed milk and it was definitely a winner. The bun itself was light and airy while maintaining a crispy outer layer. The condensed milk was just the right amount without overpowering the bun with sweetness. The scrambled egg with truffle on toast was also quite good. Eggs in Asia are definitely better than the ones in America and you can tell immediately by just looking at it! The scrambled eggs were smooth and silky - perfectly executed. The truffle blended well with the eggs and did not overpower it. I would definitely come back again whenever I'm in HK. read more
I wanted the full HK experience and what better place to start than at a cha chaan teng or literally translated as "tea restaurant" that serves a mixture of Hong Kong local and Western cuisine. Surprisingly we had to wait in line, though it moved quite fast. It was quite crammed inside, we shared tables with this couple that looked very uncomfortable, probably because we sat directly in front of them, double date style. I was accustomed to table sharing at this point so it didn't bother me. I went for the classic scrambled egg, toast, macaroni soup, and milk tea to see what the fuss is about. Boy, it was insanely delicious! Eggy, fluffy, creamy, tasty, heavenly even! Completely took me by surprise because I never expected simple scrambled eggs can be this good. It complements the large fluffy toast and creamy milk tea perfectly, just perfectly. The macaroni soup with ham, however, I'm not crazy about, the macaroni itself tasted very bland and there was not anything special about the chicken-based soup either. Meh. What a hearty breakfast, I can eat it almost every day. I can do without the macaroni soup. read more

Order the scramble egg on toast with black truffle and coffee milktea. I enjoyed the egg and toast but needed more flavor. The black truffle tasted old but whatever. The coffee milktea is probably one of the most in-depth basic morning drink in Hong Kong and yet this is probably the worst I had in HK. It was super acidic and didn't have that milk taste but instead had the fan milk taste. I personal thought this would be an above avg place to eat breakfast. Ever time I walk pass it there is a long line and had heard great thing about it. It really was a disappointment waiting in line and having something like that. read more
One of my favorite parts of Hong Kong food are their cafes. Great for any meal of the day, but especially breakfast. Stayed on HK island this trip and tried Capital Cafe. They offer traditional HK Plus western breakfast option. English menus are available which are helpful. Service was quick, and food was on point. This location was clean as well, much cleaner than many cafe you can go to. You will see many reviews talking about HK eggs: they are spot on. Airy, creamy scrambled eggs served with fluffy toast and ham. Milk tea and Horlick are must have drinks. You should order less sugar though "Siu tim". Kaya French toast was a "lighter" option than the more traditional condensed milk, peanut butter, butter French toast. I also recommend ordering the pork chop bun. read more

Absolutely a fun cool experience. HK budget breakfast at finest. Wait staff was assume. Didn't miss a beat when a none local was there. A huge breakfast for 4-6$HK I ate the two days in a row. Do it. read more

This was the first place I stopped at when I was in Hong Kong and let me tell you. This place gives you such an Asian vibe to it. They server hk breakfast here. The breakfast was not only cheap but delicious. Their hk milktea was on point. read more

Nice cha chang tein breakfast but on the expensive side costing $34 a set, ouch.... The thick toast is nice and the milk tea is very good. Not very crowd at 8am. read more
Make it easy for yourself and order the set meals, haha. We got the breakfast set and it was yummy. I got my usual- macaroni with spam, hk style coffee, scramble egg with toast. Service was good! Definitely would come back here. read more
