I came in for breakfast twice during my stay in Hong Kong. Each time I walked in, the staff asked me how many and let me sit anywhere. Although it was busy on my first visit, it didn't feel overwhelming, nor did I feel rushed and herded by staff. Orders are done through the QR code on the table, but my phone service was wonky that day and one of the employees was very nice and took my order. That did lead me to panic ordering the HOTTEST egg toast, but that's my own fault and I surely paid the consequence. I like spicy food, but that lacked flavor and only burned. They have a big menu, including vegetarian options and famous HK bakery items like egg tarts and pineapple bread. The regular egg toast is delicious, a heaping serving of creamy eggs over thick toast. Then of course I had to try the famous Hong Kong Milk tea, which was also delicious. It's made with a full bodied black tea and has a rich earthy flavor. No sugar added so it's not sweet unless you make it so. When I was finished, I paid at the register and was on my way. read more

Chose a random Hong Kong cafe to get my macaroni fix. This one's a chain with a location also in Canada I believe. Menu is quite large and mostly breakfast items. We got a char siu macaroni soup, bolo bao, and truffle scrambled egg toast. There was a lot of egg on the toast but the truffle tasted more like a dark chocolate crumble? Not sure if that's what it was supposed to be but still appetizing. Macaroni soup was delicious. I just enjoy pasta in soup. Lol. The bolo bao was a bit of a disappointment due to the bread being cold. I don't know if there was an option to just tell them we wanted it hot. Cocky waitstaff who is efficient and friendly with a degree of sarcasm. Cheap fast comfort food. I just could not stop smiling listening to these waiters cracking silly jokes and comments within themselves. They even talks to customers with this friendly tone with a degree of sarcasm. Customer service one might not use to if you have been living overseas for awhile. Even after 9:30 am the place was packed. But the turnover was really fast and I was in and out within 20 minute. My very first HK Cafe experience and it did not disappoint! I was debating whether to come here or to Australian Dairy Company for soft scrambled eggs and decided here since it was closer to our hotel. No lie, my family had a hard time finding this place using Google Maps and Yelp BUT if you just look up at the signs you'll see it... LOL. Oops. We only had to wait 3 minutes to be seated but inside was PACKED. We has to squeeze in between 2 other parties (everyone is each others elbow space). If you don't read Chinese you can ask for their English menu (that's what we did). We ended up ordered 2 scrambled eggs on toast, 1 scrambled egg topped with black truffle on toast, 1 kaya coconut jam toast, 3 HK milk teas (hot), and a purple sweet potato & red bean drink. The soft scrambled eggs on that light, fluffy, and airy toast was amaaaazing! Never have I had eggs like that before. I believe they use Hokkaido milk? The truffle was OK... I feel like it didn't make THAT big of a difference. My whole family liked those eggs. The Kaya Coconut Jam Toast was pretty good. The same toast just topped with a thin-ish layer of sweet Singaporean jam. The HK milk tea was good. I don't think i'm a huge fan of milk tea made using condensed milk though. My dad really like it! And lastly, the sweet potato drink with red bean. It was good but mostly ice and red bean. Interesting to try but probably wouldn't recommend it. As for service, it's fast and efficient. Not a rude as I heard Australian Dairy Company is. You don't feel super rushed but I would't take my sweet sweet time since there is a line of people waiting outside to dine too. Can't beat that breakfast combo set. For $34 HKD (currently $5.40 USD), i had a coffee, toast, 2 scrambled eggs and macaroni soup with ham. Love how they make their scrambled eggs at these cafes. It's soft and super scrambled, just the way it should be cooked. The toast drizzled with condensed milk and peanut butter is an indulgence. It's sweet and sugar overload with some iced HK milk tea. We went to Capital Café based on the recommendations of the nice ladies at Mee Wah Bakery. We walked in to buy some pineapple cakes and almond cookies to bring home and my mom stopped to have a chat with the ladies working in the store. They pointed us to Capital Café (since I had left my list at home!!) and we weren't disappointed. I had the scrambled eggs with ham on toast along with a Hong Kong Milk Tea. Boy, I wish all the scrambled egg toasts in NYC were like this! The eggs were so smooth and silky and the toast was thick-cut and buttery. I could eat this all day! They're SUPER fast about churning these out. Seems just as quick whether you're sitting in there or getting it to go. The truffle egg toast is about $7USD, and worth it. The eggs are perfectly scrambled and seasoned. The toast gives the gooey topping a good, sturdy base. The truffle sprinkled on top gives it a nice kick of extra flavor. If I could eat at Capital Cafe every morning, I probably would. My first time visiting was yesterday morning around 10am and I waited on line for about 30 minutes. My mom and I were seated at a 4 person booth table across from two sweet girls from Taiwan. Loved that we were seated with strangers to and that the restaurant maximized their space (as so many people were waiting in line). I order a cold Hong Kong milk tea and the truffle scrambled eggs on toast. I usually do not care for eggs/breakfast food, but I absolutely LOVED it. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the truffle is a nice touch/not too over powering. We also ordered the principal toast to share, which was AMAZING! It was truffle and cheese melted on toast. There's about a 30 minute wait, but SO worth it. Capital Cafe cannot be missed. I've now been two days in a row and I'm probably going back again tomorrow morning before leaving Hong Kong. read more

I had just gotten to Hong Kong after a pretty tumultuous journey and wanted something quick and easy for dinner. After a bit of wandering, we wound up at Capital Cafe. We were standing outside trying to decipher to non-English menu when an employee made his way over and happily retrieved us an English menu. It's hard to say no to a meal somewhere if a person is that helpful and accommodating. We wound up ordering a couple of sandwiches. Our first sandwich was a beef satay concoction. The oddly sweet bread was a little distracting at first but it wound up complementing the savory, meaty filling inside. The second sandwich was referred to as a Devil's Submarine, and it essentially wound up being a hot dog sliced in half and served with a very tasty sauce. It's a weird little 'wich that actually worked really well. The snap of the hot dog and the zing of the sauce complemented each other quite nicely. read more

This place is a classic. I came in just after opening and was seated pretty quickly for a table for 2. Its a fast paced and relatively cramped place, so it'd be helpful not to bring too much stuff. The wait may seem long, but everyone is trying to eat and get out asap, so it goes by pretty quickly. This place is not made for groups. I saw a group of 8 come in and they only had 6 available seats, so they sat 6 people first, and 2 people had to stand around awkwardly waiting for people at the book ends to finish before they could get the remaining 2 seats. The table situation is not the best, but its' HK, so you learn to live with it. The waitstaff are efficient but also a bit arrogant. Again, its very HK. The food is why you're here tho. The scrambled eggs are smooth and creamy and goes well with the white bread toast. I could eat that everyday. The milk tea was also very smooth and rich as well. My local friends recommended this cafe for breakfast, and we were not disappointed. This HK cafe is owned by a celebrity and apparently lots of local celebrities dine there (though we didn't see any haha!) My party arrived on a weekday at 11.30AM, and there were plenty of seats. It may be good to decide what you want to get even before going, especially if it's your first time and if you don't really speak Cantonese. When it gets busy, the staff may be a little annoyed if you take too long. But honestly, compared to other HK cafes we have been to, the service here is already comparatively good. We got the breakfast set which consists of ham macaroni, eggs and buttered toast and a drink. (34 HKD) You get to choose either sunny side-up eggs (jian dan) or scrambled eggs (chao dan). We opted for scrambled eggs, and made sure to say the order correctly because the last time we went to a cafe, we didn't get our scrambled eggs because we didn't know how they referred to their eggs as.. Cold drinks are an additional 2 HKD. I had the iced milk tea, but it was tooooo sweet for my liking. Hot drinks come unsweetened, so it may be better to control the sweetness for those who are concerned. The buttered toast and eggs are awesome! The eggs are watery the way I like it, I guess with milk added? But they didn't taste too milky. I only had my toast after it got cold but it was still crunchy and pretty good. Must've been much better when it was freshly served. Ham macaroni was not bad, a little on the salty side but the broth tasted a lot like Campbell chicken soup which is sort of my comfort food. 34 HKD for a whole breakfast set is such a steal! The chicken or the egg? At Capital Cafe you get the eggs of course! Capital Cafe is popular for their scrambled eggs and rightly so. This is a very typical "Hong Kong" cafe where you can get the traditional HK breakfast (Macaroni with ham, eggs, toast, and milk tea). They have other dishes but I personally haven't tried it because every time I come here I get the breakfast set. What's special about their eggs? I'm guessing they mix it with milk, and its a little soggy in a good way. Their milk tea has has a nice strong flavor; not very watered down or overly sweet. If you come here on a weekday during lunch time, expect a very long line.. but if you go after work hours its quite empty. Either way the service is always quick without being rude (like Australian Dairy can be sometime. I discovered this place mainly by coincidence. I saw someone on instagram posted a picture of their scrambled eggs with black truffle and I said... I want that! So I came here twice during my nine day stay in HK. I love this place. It's a HK café style that serves up really good café style food. Their scrambled eggs are oh so heavenly. Creamy, smooth, silky, creamy... my kids loved it. The black truffle added a nice pungency to it but it wasn't too overpowering. I also had their fried pork chop bun - perfectly fried pork chop that still retained its moisture, and they added wasabi mayo to it that gave it a nice kick. Another local favorite is the condensed milk bun - essentially a toasted bun with butter and condensed milk slather allover it. Sounds simple, and yes you can easily make it at home, but it's just so good! Prices are fair, service was really good - I would definitely come back over and over again. read more

This is the fastest breakfast I've had. When in HK, one should have HK breakfast of thick toast, soft buttery scrambled eggs and macaroni with ham. Then wash everything down with HK milk tea made with strong black tea and evaporated milk. Quite the experience if I might add. This place was so efficient, they knew to hand us English language menu, spoke to us in English and took our order with great proficiency and speed without sacrificing manners. We tried the piggy bun with condensed milk and it was definitely a winner. The bun itself was light and airy while maintaining a crispy outer layer. The condensed milk was just the right amount without overpowering the bun with sweetness. The scrambled egg with truffle on toast was also quite good. I wanted the full HK experience and what better place to start than at a cha chaan teng or literally translated as "tea restaurant" that serves a mixture of Hong Kong local and Western cuisine. Surprisingly we had to wait in line, though it moved quite fast. It was quite crammed inside, we shared tables with this couple that looked very uncomfortable, probably because we sat directly in front of them, double date style. I was accustomed to table sharing at this point so it didn't bother me. I went for the classic scrambled egg, toast, macaroni soup, and milk tea to see what the fuss is about. Boy, it was insanely delicious! Eggy, fluffy, creamy, tasty, heavenly even! Completely took me by surprise because I never expected simple scrambled eggs can be this good. It complements the large fluffy toast and creamy milk tea perfectly, just perfectly. The macaroni soup with ham, however, I'm not crazy about, the macaroni itself tasted very bland and there was not anything special about the chicken-based soup either. Meh. The coffee milktea is probably one of the most in-depth basic morning drink in Hong Kong and yet this is probably the worst I had in HK. It was super acidic and didn't have that milk taste but instead had the fan milk taste. I personal thought this would be an above avg place to eat breakfast. One of my favorite parts of Hong Kong food are their cafes. Great for any meal of the day, but especially breakfast. Stayed on HK island this trip and tried Capital Cafe. They offer traditional HK Plus western breakfast option. English menus are available which are helpful. Service was quick, and food was on point. This location was clean as well, much cleaner than many cafe you can go to. You will see many reviews talking about HK eggs: they are spot on. Airy, creamy scrambled eggs served with fluffy toast and ham. Milk tea and Horlick are must have drinks. You should order less sugar though "Siu tim". Kaya French toast was a "lighter" option than the more traditional condensed milk, peanut butter, butter French toast. I also recommend ordering the pork chop bun. read more

I'm not a fan of scrambled eggs. Usually I'll get my eggs poached or over easy because a fully cooked egg is too dry. However, I would get the scrambled eggs from here again. The combination of thick buttered toast topped with a giant mound of scrambled eggs with black truffle was delicious! I couldn't really taste the effect of the truffle. Honestly, I came here purely from the hype generated from groups of friends who kept talking about this place that had back then just opened up in Wanchai. This is Wanchai and I guess this is understandable- so we proceeded. I say proceeded but I mean we proceeded to wait and we were really told how long it will take. People were coming out pretty quickly so we thought it should be our turn soon. Indeed, the beckon for us to enter and we went in holding our breaths expecting to see stars everywhere.......well, I think the whole place was a bit bland to be honest. It was a small place so everything was packed. We sat down and the menu was actually really short- you care made to have the sets (which all have the egg, cha siu spaghetti in soup). Again you put up with it with the waiter keep chasing you down to order something; you just do. The food came and I would say its ok- that's why its got 3 stars. If I was really hungry and this was a place close to me, yes I would go there because I don't even need to think what I want. Its the same stuff over and over again. What if I was not in the area and felt like having the right to actually choose something? I wouldn't come here in a million years. read more

Finally got to try Capital Cafe. Unlike most HK tea cafe, CC doesn't overwhelmed customers with a plethora of selections. The house specials Black Truffle Egg Toast and the Ghost Pork chop bun were decent. Although I have to say I couldn't taste much of the truffle flavor despite the toast being sprinkled by lots of black powder that is suppose to be truffle. The Ghost Pork Chop bun was solid but too much spicy/wasabi mayo. Washed everything down with an iced milk tea, which nicely balanced sweetness and dryness.
