Satay beef combo.
David W.

This is the first time I have tried this cafe. It is conveniently located near the Royal Plaza Hotel and offers breakfast and bakery products. I had the breakfast combo: satay beef instant noodles with bread and two eggs. It was tasty. The service is on point and attentive.

Need an early morning breakfast, late night snack or afternoon tea? Come to Hong Lin Restaurant. Love, love, love this crowded diner introduced to our travel party by Jacky from This Is Asia Tours. Feels like you've been transported back in times as you sip on hot Hong King Milk Tea from a Black & White ceramic cup. Add sugar to enhance the flavor. Ask a local. Get the pineapple bun. So delicious with a pat of fresh butter. Trust Jacky on this recommendation. French Toast with your milk tea? Definitely! The French Toast has a hidden surprise. The two slices are filled with a thin layer of....peanut butter. Add some syrup for a decadent bite. For a savory British influenced taste, add a chicken pie. So yummy. Great place to rest after exploring Mong Kok and grab a late afternoon tea. They also have a takeaway window and a second floor up a narrow staircase.

The definition of a typical "cha Chan tang" with its fast service and amazing food. Came here for an early breakfast (7:30 AM) so the options were limited but very satisfying. Got the ramen noodles with satay beef and 2eggs, vermicelli with pickled veggies and meat, egg tart and pineapple bun with butter. You could tell that this was a staple in the community as their "to-go" window was extremely busy and from the constant refill of freshly baked pastries. All the food pictured was only $25 USD.... Doesn't get any better than that

Came here on a weekday for lunch and was able to get a seat right away. They have a big selection for their menu along with lots of drinks. The restaurant is definitely super crowded and pretty noisy. The servers were attentive and the food came out pretty quick. Something to note is the bathroom is all the way downstairs towards the back but it's pretty dirty since a lot of the dirty dishes and garbage is there. Definitely recommend checking out if you're looking for a quick eat in Mong Kok.

Trying as many pineapple buns as I can while in HK. Had to wait for about 10 minutes at Hong Lin for the pineapple buns to come out as they ran out. Picked up a few pineapple buns with butter and milk tea combos ($32) and a few egg tarts. The tarts and buns were warm. The buns had soft buttery interiors and crispy toppings - good! As for the egg tarts, good but nothing particularly special about them.

I didn't get the opportunity to dine-in at Hong Lin, but I was able to stop here for some Dan Tat or egg tarts. Outside of the restaurant there is a take-away area where two ladies stand, so passers-by can get there baked goods without having to step inside the restaurant. All the prices are marked on each item. Just point and say how many. I ordered two egg tarts which turned out to be the only ones I tried in Hong Kong. The other ones I tried were the Portuguese version over in Macau. That being said these egg tarts here were very good. The ratio of crust to filling was perfect. They were just baked so the Dan tats were hot and fresh. Good spot for some baked goods. It's close to all the pet shops in Mongkok which is a fun area to eat some egg tarts and look at all the pure bred puppies and kittens on the same block.

Pineapple Bun with Iced Butter

Whenever I am in Hong Kong, I always stop by Hong Lin for their pineapple bun with iced butter. No matter what time you stop by, the pineapple buns are always fresh out of the oven. It just works so well with the slice of butter. Just a reminder, you come for the food - not the service or ambience! There are two parts to this location. There is a street side section where you can pick up buns for on the go eating or you can step inside and enjoy the full menu. They have set meals for breakfast and lunch/dinner and a full menu that you can order items individually from. The set meals are the best value in my opinion. Their milk teas are one of the best in the are and are always piping hot. There are a lot of hong kong style cafes that are in the area, but if you are looking for the best- Hong Lin is the place to drop into!

Yes, Kam Wah is the bigger nearby name when it comes to HK-style cafes and rightly so. Their pineapple buns are amazing and their dan tats are fantastic. However, given that Hong Lin is a lot more comfortable, less chaotic, and more hospitable, I actually might prefer to go there if I want to relax. I came here for breakfast (read Tiffany C.'s review and it sounded promising) as I was going to the nearby Flower Market later. The pineapple bun here isn't quite Kam Wah but it's not far off. It came to me warm and fresh, with a nice sweet and crumbly top. The dan tat was fine, but not amazing. The crust was decently flaky and the egg filling was smooth and sweet. The dan tat wasn't a liability but I wouldn't go out-of-my-way for it. The milk tea had the nice robust and sweet balance to it. The interior is clean and more inviting than most older HK-style cafes. The service here is surprisingly friendly and patient, especially in comparison to the hasty Kam Wah service. I didn't go for a breakfast set, but they have them here, like similar places. The guy next to me cut open his over-easy egg yolk and started slurping. Don't ever change, Hong Kong.

We took the advise and went for the pineapple buns. HOT OUT OF THE OVEN! You actually see the guy hoist the pan over his head and cart them out from the kitchen to the street, where they also sell the buns as well. This was my first pineapple bun experience, but the bar as been set. Served with butter....absolutley scrumptous! You will want one for your own, so no sharing is recommended. They are that good! We went in for a late lunch/early dinner around 4PM because we were in the area having come from the bird and fish markets near by. The place was busy, but no wait. The place is kind of messy only because they do a lot of volume and there are signs of a busy business....marks on tables, food on floor, etc. Nothing dirty though or any reason not to grab a meal. Very inexpensive and a good simple meal. Short the amazing pineapple bun, the fresh spinach dumplings in the vermicelli soup I had were noteworthy. You can see and taste the freshness and see the handmade touch to these dumplings. They sure pack a lot of spinach in one little dumping. They were good. The menu does have some English and also pictures, so you could navigate your way through if you spoke and read no Chinese. The staff seems friendly that they would probably find the one guy who speaks some English to help if need be. And remember, all you really need to know is to order the pineapple bun! I would be remiss though to not note that we were most impressed by the head waiter/host who is tasked with welcoming you and getting you to a table and finding you a seat. Including us and evey single person we saw walk into this restaurant, that waiter/host was on it....always a quick sincere welcome, verbally strong tone to his voice, body language supports his appreciation for our visit. He was so friendly and set the tone for our experience in this bustling Hong Kong coffee shop. We would absolutley return to this place and for a simple Hong Kong style coffee shop experience and a great pineapple bun experience, I suggest you do as well.

Absolutely must have bo lo bao! Freshly baked and super soft! Near the flower Street market. It's nice to have one and a cup of milk while resting in between shopping The bo lo bao can be packed for take away - plain or with a slice of cold butter tucked into the bun. Recommended by the locals,if you are ever in this area doing a spot of shopping, come in to have the buns

Hong Lin is a good place to stop by late into the evening. Their food is reasonably priced, but they're serving up counter-side Pineapple buns with butter on the street. For $10HKD you get a fresh, warm, tasty Pineapple bun with butter. Mmmmm! The cafe food is good, not great, but definitely try their pineapple bun!

Chinese and western style soup

The first meal we had when we arrived in Hong Kong was at Hong Lin! Have to say that the pineapple buns in front of the store definitely drew me in. With a few choices to choose from on Tung Choi Street, Hong Lin seemed like the best one. The food options seemed similar to LA's Garden Café with a few late night specials that sounded promising. The restaurant is pretty big with lots of booths and tables. Because it was pretty late, we were given the option to seat ourselves. I really wish I was able to try Hong Lin's fresh pineapple buns as it came out from the oven - or one of their egg tarts. The other reviewers make it sound so delicious! Drinks: -Hot HK milk tea: all HK places make it the same - super smooth and tasty. If you haven't tried milk tea from HK, you're missing out! You're able to add condensed milk to get the taste to be as sweet as you want it to be. -Red bean gelatin: a big staple for most HK cafes. Not a big fan of this drink, but my dad loves it. Solid drink here. -Horlick: the hot malted milk drink that my parents always order when they go back to HK since it allows them to reminisce on their childhood days. I personally do not like the drink too much, but they love the taste. Soup: -Both Asian and Western style soups were really good. Their Borscht soup had enough tanginess to it with a good number of ingredients inside. Food: -Pork knuckle rice: Like I said before in another review, most HK establishments use tomato sauce to make their pork knuckle dishes now. Not a fan of this way to cook pork knuckle, but the meat was tender and tasty. The tomato sauce just took the flavor away from the meat. -Soy sauce chicken with BBQ pork and rice: My sister was a big fan. Chicken was cooked well and not too dry, but the BBQ pork was slightly dry. Good amount of meat and rice for 1 person. -Won ton rice noodle soup: Four won tons in a bowl of rice noodle. I really liked this dish! Won tons had good flavor and a good ratio of meat to the flour. I especially liked the rice noodle - soup gave it enough taste; very "healthy" dish to eat for the first meal in HK. -Beef noodle soup: This was made with flatter noodles. There was a good amount of beef and tendon in the bowl of soup. Noodles were tasty and the broth had good flavor. Dessert: -Pineapple bun with stick of butter: Staple and MUST try if you go to HK. It's definitely best to get these fresh out of the oven, but even though I got one at a pretty late hour, it was still super tasty! Bun was so soft, and the "pineapple" shell upon biting into it was crispy and flaky. That stick of butter gave the bread that melty sweetness. Definitely not something you'd want to eat on a daily basis - but if you're on vacation, it's okay to get it once in awhile! Service was pretty good. I think the waiter noticed my sister and I talking in English, so he tried to use some English lingo in the midst of his Cantonese. Price is definitely affordable! Total bill came out to be under $10. tl;dr - If you can get the pineapple buns in the morning, definitely give it a try. Their food is above average, so I would not discourage people from coming here for afternoon tea or lunch/dinner! Prices are decent and there's almost always people walking in and out at any given time. I saw a few people just enjoying a drink and a bun for a nighttime snack while reading, so it's nice to know they don't discourage people from just relaxing in their restaurant!

Located in the heart of the Goldfish Market area, this place is constantly busy, which is a good indicator of how well liked this place is with the locals. While most order a meal, almost everyone seems to get their pineapple bun (with butter, of course) and/or their fabulous egg tarts. If you don't want to eat in, their baked goods are available outside the restaurant. Speaking of their baked goods, because of the high turnover, their products are very fresh - many times still warm out of the oven. I lucked out when I ordered the egg tarts as it just came out of their oven. Here's nothing like super fresh egg tarts where the egg is still piping hot! I tried a couple of their dishes - their Hainanese Chicken and baked pork chops. The chicken was "ok" but I've had better. The chicken was a bit thin on the meat side of things and the rice wasn't as fragrant as I'd like it to be. The baked pork chops was better though the tomato sauce was a little bit sweet for my tastes. The hot milk tea was pretty good - smooth and rich. If you're not hungry for a meal, definitely still try their egg tarts and their pineapple buns.

Their popularity was at an all-time high just before the pandemic and has remained one of Sai Wan's most frequent local eateries. Waiting is a common past time here, so try to aim for a pre-noon arrival. Their stuffed toasts are legendary and are indeed the real deal. The salted egg yolk toast is fun to eat and film, but the taro custard (香芋流沙西多士) is next level good. The lava that flows from within makes this the ultimate dessert item, and should be on everyone's table. Their XO stir fried radish cubes (XO醬炒蘿蔔糕), along with the XO fried rice rolls (XO醬炒腸粉) are two of my favorite items. The dim sum items are fairly standard (especially the shrimp dumplings), but the shrimp stuffed rice rolls are very good. The shrimp toast is not my usual kind of order, but this place definitely specializes in it. The service is warm and very quick with everything: taking orders, bringing food, and getting the check. The signature egg yolk is fun to cut into - giving you some real insta-worthy yolk porn, but is definitely heavy, so consider sharing. But for me, what won my heart was a delicious take on a childhood favorite - radish cakes: Chau Kee's versions are cut up and fried, so that the crisp fry-exterior gives way to a tacky and soft interior. Flavors of shrimp and seafood are present from the XO sauce. The menu is in both Chinese and English and full of pictures, so it's also gweilo-friendly!

I'm down if it's good food! Located in a residential area, I wasn't really expecting too much honestly. But I heard good word about it so why not give it a shot? Wow, for a neighborhood restaurant, this place was bomb! I had some dishes where I never had elsewhere before! We started with the fried pomfret salad. I love the fried fish, juicy, tender and mildly sweet. I wasn't a fan of the salad dressing though. It was like the thousand island from a bottle from the grocery aisle. I wish they make a good dressing. My favorite plate-licking dish was the shrimp angel hair with pumpkin sauce. Pumpkin sauce!? Large, succulent and crunchy shrimp with fresh shredded veggies mixed in sweet and buttery pumpkin sauce. How can you not like that? The flavors were really good and I was going bite after bite until I finished it without even knowing! My second fav was the crispy chicken with apricots and honey mustard sauce served on on a plate of spaghetti and veggies. Honey mustard is my favorite, and to combine that with crispy chicken? What a great idea! The chicken came out crispy and hot and the meat was tender and juicy. Love this dish! We wrapped up our meal with the famous chocolate souffle. Dang! That was good! Piping hot, creamy, sweet, slightly crispy on the outside and fluffy inside like a snowball! We got the vanilla flavor too but I liked the chocolate one better. The lady owner was there last night and she was bubbly and socializing with all the customers. Friendly and good service overall. Seating was a bit tight so make sure you make a reservation ahead of time or come early. The toasted and buttered bun was decent but didn't have enough butter not toasty char. The macaroni noodle soup was on the bland side. The hot dog and eggs were very typical.
