Second stop of our Sham Shui Po breakfast adventure and Hop Yik Tai was what I was most excited for. Known for the curry fish balls and cheung fan, this little restaurant offers quick and delicious snacks, with most people lining up for takeout. We decided to dine-in and walked in once some table seats opened up. If you're a small group, you'll most likely have to share a table with strangers. The turnover is really quick so if it's a full house, just stand to the side and you won't have to wait long. Once we sat down, someone took our order and the food came out almost immediately. Cheung Fan: Comes in different sizes with 3 rolls in small, 5 in medium and 7 in large. If you're with a group, you can easily share a medium or large. I wouldn't really consider this a meal...just a snack. Each table will have various sauces and sesame seeds for customers to add to their plate. The rice rolls themselves were super soft and tender and the mix of sweet and savory sauces was really good. Highly recommend trying! Siu Mai: Comes with 6 pieces. It was alright, definitely not the best I've had. Overall, pretty good snack and I can see why it's blown up on social media recently. If you're in the area, make sure to grab some. Cash only!

Read many reviews and have heard the hype about this rice noodle roll place so had to give it a try. I was a little disappointed as I had pretty high expectations of their rice noodle rolls. We ordered the medium size rolls along with some sui mai and pork and century egg congee. The rice noodle rolls were ok, I've honestly had better, the sauces were a bit too runny for my liking, especially the peanut sauce. I found that the sauce didnt cling to the noodle rolls super well so they tasted slightly bland. The texture was nice and soft but still had that slight chew. The sui mai and congee were nothing spectacular. The ladies working here were nice and the service is efficient. They recently renovated so there are more tables for customers to sit and eat. The place is fairly small so expect to share your table with locals. This really is more of a 3.5 star rating, swing by to see the hype and experience it for yourself!

Michelin recommended street food at a cheap price! Hop Yik Tai is famed for their cheung fun (rice rolls). You choose the number of rolls (4,6,8,10) and watch the woman dunk the rolls in hot water, squirt them with three types of sauce and top them with sesame seeds. Most people seemed to be getting theirs to go, but we ate ours standing in the alleyway. The cheung fun is nice and supple. We shared a six piece (HK$15 - less than US$2) and it was more than enough. They have an dine in area and a more extensive menu that we did not explore. Hop Yik Tai is very close to the MTR station. There is no signage or menu in English. If you can't read Chinese, look for the stall with the line!

famous for its smooth cheung fun, this place was renovated for better dine in. also got other snacks as well as congee and noodle for a decent meal. mixed sauce is the best: soy sauce, peanut sauce and sweet sauce, and don't forget sesame seeds

$20 worth + spicy fishballs ($6 extra). Delicious

Quintessential HK. Worth waiting! Queue up. Know what you want. Order fast! Stuck in an alleyway. Not the cleanest but it's near street markets, so it's expected. How to order: it goes by "$" - so you can order $5, $10, $20, $30 - of rice noodle (Churn Fun) and add anything extra like fish balls ($6). Then you add the sauce or let her do it for you with everything. Sweet soy, peanut sauce, spicy, and sesame seeds. Be sure to tell the lady - "eat here" on a plate or "takeaway" in a baggie or your own container. Stand to the side after you've paid. Eat. And leave. They always sell "frozen" for you to take home or Airbnb to heat up yourself... but why??! You won't have the sauces...

Cheap, delicious, and sure to fill you up! If you love rice rolls, you must check out this spot! This was my favorite street food snack! I came here for the Chee Cheong Fun, which is topped with peanut sauce, hoisin sauce, and hot sauce. It's a simple and plain dish, but is so delicious. We went with the 6 pieces and it was easily shareable and a good amount of rice rolls. There was a short queue that slowly increased as we waited, but they were quick in getting everyone's order done. Many people got takeout, which is gets packed in to-go bags, but we got it in a plate and just stood by the corner to eat.

Look no further, if you love cheap and delicious snacks, this is the spot. Hop Yik Tai specializes in rice rolls and fish sui mai. I ordered the rice rolls with peanut sauce, hoisin sauce and hot sauce as a snack before breakfast....delicious! For something that is so simple to make, you'd be surprised how many places can't do it right. They have it perfect here, the rolls are fresh, soft, delicate and silky. After having their rice rolls, I can't look at other rice rolls the same anymore :( Their prices are very inexpensive and I think we paid $1.20 USD for a plate of rice rolls. You can get it to go or 'here' but you're really gorging in the alley way haha - super HK right? Quick service and HK alley vibes with good food what you want sometimes.

Hop Yik Tai - Legendary Cheong Fun with a Side of Sass If you're hunting down some of the smoothest cheong fun in Hong Kong, Hop Yik Tai in Sham Shui Po is a name that comes up time and time again--and for good reason. This humble local joint has earned a spot on the Michelin Guide, and the queues that snake down the block every morning speak for themselves. The rice noodle rolls here are made fresh daily, and you can taste the difference. Silky, delicate, and practically gliding off your chopsticks, they're doused in a trio of sweet soy sauce, rich sesame sauce, and a hint of hoisin--simple, yet incredibly satisfying. It's the kind of street food that makes you feel like you've tapped into a local secret... even if it's not so secret anymore. Now, for the not-so-silky part: the service. Let's just say, it's part of the authentic experience. In Cantonese, I asked for a "medium" portion, trying to follow the menu that seemed to listed sizes. The lady behind the counter shot me a glare sharp enough to slice the cheong fun with a knife and snapped, "What you want?" I tried again, clearier this time. Her reply? A barked, "$10, $15, or $20?" Ah. Right. Turns out, at Hop Yik Tai, you don't order by size--you order by price. Maybe review the sizes next to the price tag to avoid the confusion, F*(&k... So there I was, eating world-famous cheong fun in a slightly grimy alleyway, surrounded by locals sans plastic stools, and wondering if the rolled rice noodles were worth the verbal manhandling. Honestly? They kind of were but at the same time the sweet sauce still left a sour taste in my mouth. But would I go back to get scolded for ordering wrong again? Jury's out. Hop Yik Tai is definitely a must-try for cheong fun lovers and street food purists. Just be prepared: the cheong fun is soft, but the service is anything but.

The store is located on the corner of a dirty alley and the interior doesn't look particularly sanitary but that didn't stop us from trying out their rice rolls! The texture was perfectly bouncy and the sweet sauce + sesame sauce combination was delicious! It's definitely a messy eat though so bring lots of wet paper towels and napkins!

Nothing really special about this place. There are plenty of places that serve the same quality cheung fun. This place is cheap but their cheung fun is also smaller.

The good old days... rolled rice noodles being sold in carts!!
    Winnie W.

If you crave that old style rolled rice noodle (cheurng fun)... there's no place like Hop Yik in Shun Shui Po. Definitely come for their cheurng fun (rice noodles) and jook (rice porridge); and in my opinion, you can skip their other dishes (fish ball, pork skin and turnip combo dish, or their chow mein) and save your stomach quota for either more cheurng fun or a pineapple bun or dan-tart at nearby other restaurants. This is a classic Dai-Pai-Don place. It is clean inside but absolutely nothing fancy. And please do not expect "service" here, please. Steps to success: (1) You come - (2) You find your seat (a squeeze or share a table where you have to) - (3) You order quickly, loudly and clearly - (4) Food comes quickly - (5) Eat, savor, enjoy, and (6) Pay at Cashier counter with HKD and cash only. If you'd like, on the way out, I'd suggest grabbing a cup of soy milk so you can sip it while roaming around the street market after your meal. Enjoy!!!

A litte sweet, and the sauce is very rich. Love it! 10/10 lol Great Service: The waiters are nice. Ambiance: There aren't a lot of seats, and you need to share a seat when there are a lot of people.

    Cheung Fun (Rice Rolls)
    Monica H.

I usually don't eat Cheung Fun (rice rolls) but decided to try since I heard this place had the best ones. They are conveniently by the MTR exit so it's worth making a pit stop. The rice rolls have a smoothness that I haven't had anywhere else. The sauces and sesame seeds complement the rolls nicely. I was given the plate of goodness and joined the locals standing in the alley to enjoy my plate.

A Hong Kong cafe is like heaven for a stoner who has the munchies (just to make it clear, I've never been stoned. At least not for a long time!) But I do see the appeal for someone with these cravings. Everything comes with gravy or some type of tomato sauce. They make Coke Cola ice creams floats. French toast squares with ice cream. Funky right? But we ordered: Baked Pork Chop: this was a decent version. I think one more pork chop in the entree would have made it complete. The tomato sauce with the rice was a nice blend. Mixed grill: this was my wife's entree and she didn't like it much. She said it was ok. Flat noodles: that's what it's called in the menu but I know it as Chow Fun. I always like this dish and Kam Kee makes it decent. Service was proficient and friendly. My wife said it's a three star eatery but what takes this place into four category is they put effort into the design or ambience of the cafe whereas many places don't invest in that. It's a nice looking restaurant with decently satisfying comfort food.
