This was the third and final stop of our Sham Shui Po breakfast adventure and I was hoping we'd finish on a bang. Since our party was small enough, we were seated with another couple and shared the table. The menus didn't have English and we ended up using Google Translate a lot but I'm reading reviewers saying that there are English menus so make sure to ask for them! Of course, we ordered the beef and scrambled egg sandwich to share and added on a french toast. We also ordered some HK style milk tea, which is mixed with coffee. It's not specifically mentioned on the menu but if you order cold, it'll come sweetened and hot is unsweetened. Overall, the meal was just alright. The beef and egg sandwiches didn't have much of a flavor and I thought the ground beef was a little dry. The french toast, however, was excellent. Moist, slightly crunchy on the outside, and stuffed with some peanut butter. I'd come back to try something else on the menu but I wouldn't really recommend the sandwiches.

There was beef bits in the sandwich, which they replaced for us. The 2nd one had beef chunks in there. When we told the waiter, he said it is what it is they don't care. So when I told them to take it off the bill since it was not edible for the vegetarian and we didn't eat it that's when the bad attitude really came. And their "famous" beef sandwich really wasn't good either. A complete waste of time in my opinion. The internet hype is a big lie.

This cafe is located near some popular shopping streets and markets but deep enough in Kowloon where nothing is in English, however it helps to have someone who speaks Canto. :) I love these cafes for their fast, no nonsense service and they certainly live up to it.

Sadly, the number of dai pai dong has declined over the years as licenses for them are no longer issued, but Sing Heung Yuen is one of the few remaining ones. I came to Sing Heung Yuen for lunch with my friend. There was a line, but it moved relatively quickly. I ordered a Hong Kong-style milk tea and a tomato noodle soup with sausage, luncheon meat, and egg. I was told by a few people that the soup is best with macaroni noodle, but I prefer instant noodle, so I got that instead. The food hit the spot. It was simple, delicious, and super filling. I was told by some local ladies that the toast is a must-try, but I was way too full, so I skipped it. Aside from being a unique experience, Sing Heung Yuen offers a quick and affordable meal to tourists and locals. Avoid though if you are not a fan of tomato soup or toast since the menu is as limited as the space.

They are known for their tomato soup base and you can choose the type of noodles and there's various toppings to choose from. I ordered their tomato macaroni soup with beef and spam. The soup is on the sour side and I would have liked it to be a little more savory and hearty. The macaroni was a little overcooked but that's basically Hong Kong cafe style. It came with 2 half pieces of spam, one of it was overcooked and dry, the other one seemed undercooked. The beef was decent texture wise but it didn't have much flavor. We also ordered their toast with condensed milk and the toast was over toasted and too crunchy to my liking. Overall, it's an unique experience but don't be expect the food to be superb. You also won't get over the top service but everyone was very courteous and friendly.

The chili oil of the beef cubes gives a spicy kick and pairs well with the sesame oil soup. They also offer a variety of classic HK cafe food toppings. The popular options include marinated pork chop, soy sauce wing, corned beef and red sausage. ＊Butter Toast with Evaporated Milk 奶油麥多 My favorite breakfast item. The toast is thickly cut and fluffy. They toast both sides of the bread, generously spread some butter, then drizzle evaporated milk over it. Very crispy and sweet snack to kick start your morning. ＊HK Style Milk Tea 港式奶茶 Their hk style milk tea used to be top notch. Unfortunately the quality was disappointing this time. Just remember that you will be sharing tables with strangers as this is part of the culture! Land is gold in HK! The soup itself was quite tasty, though a bit salty for my preference. Even though I feel like their heydey was years ago, they have still managed to stay steady as a local favorite. It's as cramped as any eatery in HK, with a few stools along the wall and tiny tables for the occasional group slurp session. The staff is usually pretty on it and they're under the assumption that most folks walking in there know exactly what to order. As a result, all the menus are in Chinese, it's cash only, and the dishes run from $30-55 HKD at this point. Cart noodles (車仔麵) are a unique staple in these parts. It is a literal mixed bag of noodles (flat, thick, skinny, etc.), toppings (seafood, meats, organs, etc.) and broth. There are as many as 20 ingredients to choose from, but most get around 3 selections (三餸車仔麵) and I usually opt for beef brisket, a helping of radish, and some of their extra salty fried fish skins. I think everyone should just get a large mixed bowl of thick noodles (大雜粗麵) and shoot for pork neck and tripe. Locals love it, trust me. Don't be intimidated by the lines. People eat and go, so the waits are usually in the 5-15 min range. If you don't speak Cantonese, be prepared to show pics on your phone and expect to pay around $45-50 per person. There are other Wing Kee locations throughout the island, but this one on Sugar street will forever be their most popular one.
