Tomato, Ham and Luncheon Meat with Instant Noodles + Lemon Iced Tea
    Chris Y.

I originally came to this area for Kau Kee but my relatives have told me that this restaurant is known for their tomato soup with noodles so I decided to give this place a try. When I arrived, Kau Kee was still closed so I waited in the long line at Sing Heung Yuen. Don't let the long line fool you because it goes by real fast, especially if you're there by yourself. When I sat down, I ordered the Tomato, Ham, and Luncheon Meat with Instant Noodle. I initially thought the soup was more creamy from what I saw from other patrons eating next to me but it was very light. The soup was a bit sour for my taste so I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. Overall, I don't think I would come back to this place and stick to what I enjoy across the street.

Let me start off by saying that I'm not a big tomato fan. I've started eating them in my adult life because they are nutritious. They're not repulsive to me, like raw onions are, but I wouldn't add it to any dish for any reason. Having said that, I really enjoy Sing Heung Yuen's tomato soup noodles. It's a combination of fresh tomatoes and canned tomatoes. You can choose between macaroni, spaghetti, or instant noodles. There is a variety of proteins including ham, eggs, spam, pork chop, hot dogs, etc. Another thing they are famous for is the lemon and honey toast. This isn't a normal piece of rectangular bread, it's more like a hamburger bun. It is perfectly toasted with just enough of the lemon and honey to satisfy my sweet tooth. Lastly and most unexpectedly, their Hong Kong style milk tea is very good. The tea flavor is very strong. Probably my least favorite thing about dining here is that during peak hours, you just have to hover over people to get a spot. I wish there were a more orderly and fair way to wait for tables. Also, don't expect this to be the cleanest environment or have the friendliest staff. This is a get-in-get-out type of place. If you're looking for a leisurely and relaxing lunch, look elsewhere.

I first learned about this restaurant from TVB drama 愛我請留言. Tomato is my favorite food of all time so I've been waiting for a chance to visit this place. Finally this time I visited HK I could squeeze out some time and gave it a try! * * * EXPERIENCE * * * I went on a Thursday at ~11am. I guess it was before lunch hours so there was no wait but the place was about 80% full. It's outdoor but it was in March so the weather was pretty nice and wasn't too hot. I was expecting mediocre service and attitude from staff since this place is so famous but to my surprise all of them were very nice and patient - yes, patience was really unexpected that my server was kind enough to explain to me what's famous there and gave me time to think. Based on my observations other staff were very nice too. The menu offered a lot more choices than I expected, but a lot of them were just combinations of different noodle/macaroni types mixes with different meat choices. * * * FOOD * * * Salty lemon sprite 咸檸七: A. I don't know why I'm rating this but it's supposedly a must-order here. The only thing that would make a difference is obviously the salty lemon, I guess it was pretty fresh? But on a hot summer day I can see how refreshing this drink can be. Tomato Beef Vegetable Macaroni 茄牛菜通: A. Oh man this definitely lives up its hype. The tomato soup base was very thick and they added the right amount of sugar making it as good as it could be. Beef was very tender and thinly cut. I'm glad I added the vegetable topping because having the tomato soup alone would have made my mouth watery (the acidic side of it) but with the vegetable it kind of balanced it out. I also finished drinking the whole bowl of soup too even though it was a pretty big bowl. Lemon Honey Crispy Bun 檸蜜脆脆: A. I never really like crispy bread nor toast but since it's another signature dish I had to give it a try. The lemon honey flavor was very strong and the texture of honey helped smoothen out the otherwise almost-too-crispy bread so it was a perfect combination. It came with 4 pieces and to my own surprise I could finish it all. I highly recommend everyone gives this place a try if you haven't had a chance to do so when visiting HK. Even with a long line I think it would totally worth. Another must-visit place when I go to HK next time.

Fun little street side restaurant. We wanted to try Kau Kee beef brisket noodle soup but they were closed! I think on vacation for an extended period. Tried the tomato noodle soup with beef, egg, and sausage. It tasted like spaghettio's with a hot dog, egg, and some beef haha. Definitely interesting HK food and I'm glad we tried it. But I think I'll stick to other foods next time.

Ahhh Sing Heung Yuen. It's so iconic it doesn't really need its own introduction. Heck, even Anthony Bourdain came here with "China Matt" and Craig Auyeung 歐陽應霽. But we are left with the impression that Tony didn't quite get this food or appreciate it, even as a megastar international traveler and eater of massive cholestrol, guts, glory, uni, and sushi. Let's put it this way, unless you have Hong Kong blood and polluted air flowing through your veins for years and years, it is very very hard to explain to foreign visitors, why this food rocks, and why Sing Heung Yuen is so damn iconic. First of all, there has been a huge surge of interest in the food and food industry in the last 14 years or so. That, along with the advent of social media (as well as competitive nature of businesses, even bloggers, along with many egos at stake), plus the increase in interest of digital technology and photography, as well as the massive popularity of preserving what is eventually going to become extinct as an integral part of food culture, a simple old timer family run business like this, all they need to do is specialize in a few things and do them very well with some passion, and interest will flock. Honestly, from living abroad, I've seen enough youtube videos in Cantonese, Mandarin, English etc about Sing Heung Yuen, not to mention written press, amateur and professional blogs, as well as books written by media personalities that put S.H.Y. on its proper pedestal. But that does not mean S.H.Y does not have their average days...but overall, they deserve their well earned success. The menu is broad enough to satisfy the masses, but not so off the charts and off the wall complicated and far fetched. Whatever they offer, they pretty much deliver and execute well. The prices are obviously getting higher and higher each year due to increasing living costs, real estate etc (as well as the fame and recognition they are consistently getting), but if you live overseas where a Hong Kong cafe cannot even do something simple like a macaroni in tomato broth with beef, S.H.Y. will absolutely blow you away. This visit was actually my second, but as I was not feeling that well, the experience was not as great, but I am trying to be as objective as I can here. The signature tomato broth is pretty much a no brainer. Choose your choice of carbs, but the macaroni they serve in this combination (with beef) is uber delicious. Whether they are using beefsteak tomatoes from Beijing and/or canned tomato paste to create some multiple flavor profile is beyond me, but it is good and complex enough (especially for just a dai pai dong). The food comes out bubbly hot, and when it is cold enough in January, this really does hit the spot. Feel like a glutton? Then the toasted crispy hamburger buns with honey lemon spread (and lemon squeeze on top which you can taste) is something that is not easily replicated around town. Kind of like Cheong Kee's signature brick thick toast! One big half bun, and two small halves, making the signature "Mickey Mouse" outline. Beware of eating with hands, you might get honey all over them. The milk tea here you may want to ask for it less sweet (ditto for iced lemon tea) but when the proportions are right, it hits the spot....and much more enjoyable than Lan Fong Yuen's version! The lemon tea here I made the mistake of having a few days after having the version (iceless) at Kei Kee Tai O.. :-o. Of course not the same. It really pays to be a regular here, but if you are just a visitor and want a taste of grassroots Hong Kong (non stir fry)...this is really not a bad place to soak in the scene and enjoy some local comfort food.

Sing Heung Yuen (勝香園) used to be one of my favorite eateries in Hong Kong. Lately, the quality deteriorated quite dramatically... Not too long ago, the salted lemon 7UP was served with real salted lemon and glass bottled 7UP... now, they started to use the pre-made stuff and swapped the glass for the can. It's just not the same. I love the tomato soup based instant ramen with a slice of luncheon meat and a sunny-side egg but I can easily made that at home. Strictly speaking, everything was from a can. There is little skill involved on the ramen. If I am hungry, I'd rather go line for Kau Kee (九記). The honey lemon baguettes (檸蜜脆脆) is the only reason I return now... Service isn't spectacular since they are always busy. So I can understand why tourists find it hard to believe why this place is so popular. If you ask me, I keep coming back because of the ambiance.

Been waiting a couple years to try this place because each time I come back to Hong Kong it's never enough time to eat at all the places I want in addition to seeing all the family and friends that I want to see! I actually am not a big fan of tomato soup, but I knew this place is special when my HK family loves this place and when Anthony Bourdain also came here. The place is one of the last open-air food stalls in HK, very nostalgic and classic HK which I love. Always a long line. When we came on a Saturday afternoon at around 2pm, the line was down the block. The line looked intimidating, but it actually moved pretty fast. We probably waited about 20 minutes before we were seated. The lady who seated us pointed us to the end of the long communal table and gave us menus. We already knew what we wanted to order. FOOD -Tomato and beef macaroni- really? A huge bowl of red, semi-thick soup with macaroni and pieces of beef. The first spoonful tasted ordinary, but the more I ate, the more addicting it was. Wow, I was liking it more and more. -tomato and beef noodles- instant ramen noodles in tomato soup with some pieces of beef. The pieces of beef were the same as those in the macaroni but the soup is a bit different, it is thinner and has a little less of the "canned soup" taste, wow, I like this one a lot!! -lemon honey crispy bun- this took a while to come out. The lady told me to be patient bc they toast it five times. First bite into it was super crispy, as with the following bites. It is sweet, but very good. I taste the hint of lemon and easily ate all of my portion (other half was the husband's) -salt/lemon soda- husband and I each got one, the perfect drink to wash down the crispy bun. Also so good on a warm day. SERVICE I was expecting rude service, but was surprised that the ladies are quite nice. For example, a group of Korean tourists sitting at the same table ordered a second order of crispy bun, but later denied it. The ladies didn't get upset or yell at them... they just let it go. And when I and another couple next to us asked about our crispy buns (bc it was taking a while and we finished our macaroni and noodles already), the ladies just told us to be patient and told us they need to toast the buns five times. They also came back later when the couple next to us couldn't decide what to order yet. Overall, I had a great experience and still reminisce the food I had here. I want some now! If I lived or worked nearby, I would totally come here often. It is inexpensive and fast, a good deal too. Man, I want some now!

This place was delicious. Had the tomato-based soup with the Ramen noodles and beef. Also had toast butter and honey. To drink I had the iced sprit with salted lemon. Definitely worth trying when I'm HK. I usually don't write reviews but this place was definitely worth the review. Added bonus very reasonable prices.
