Menu & noodles!!!
Linny F.

Oh my good lordie lord... This place is EVERYTHING the reviews say it is!!! My immediate thought after looking thru the menu is "Man, I wanna come back here with my laptop and book and just spend an ENTIRE day here, eating and chilling!" And Mark my words, I'll make it happen. Interior: we got a little lost looking for the entrance to the building, and once we got to the 10th floor, I really thought it was just gonna be a shop or space on the 10th fl. No. It IS the 10th floor O__O And what good call it is. Even on a rainy day, it doesn't stop the natural lights from shining in. The layout is very comfty to the eyes, and you really really can't help but wanting to stay a little longer. Menu & Food: We came mainly for the beef noodles, but after looking thru the menu, they have a huge selection of teas, drinks, sweets, desserts, and still a huge selection of Taiwanese rice, noodles, and dishes. I wish I were a cow so I can have 4 stomachs to eat EVERYTHING!!! Beef Noodles: I got this with 2 servings of spicy oil (so if you eat spice like me, consider asking for 2 doses). I usually don't eat the beef in beef noodle soup BUT~~~ TeaWood beef stew is just so super soft and chewy, I actually finished them! The thing I loved most about their beef noodles is the it comes old school Taiwanese style with carrots & daikon. I've really never had this anywhere else in NYC cept the short period of time when Panda Cafe sold beef noodles. It's a nicer touch, for TW native I think :) I'm just going to be spoiled now when I eat other beef noodles and they DON'T have them, lol. Taiwanese iced plum drink: I was SO relieved upon first tasting that this doesn't taste like other failed plum drinks I've had elsewhere. It's got a nice refreshing aftertaste, and a strong plum kick, if that makes sense. Spicy pig ears: Loved this one as well. As a matter of fact, this was the thing that made me wish I had more stomach room. It was actually spicy, and a fitting appetizer to get your appetite started... Oh man... drooling as I type. Last but not least, waitstaff is super nice. Nice to be here after having encountered some rude HK ppl out there... I can't WAIT to come back!!!

Desserts! Chocolate toast!

The famous Teawood brick toast! Taiwanese beef noodles! Taiwanese food! Not only do they have yummy Teawood toast, but they also have yummy Taiwanese food as well. I would recommend having the Taiwanese beef noodles and any type of pasta. What is great about this place is that they make their own noodles! Initially, I didn't think I would be impressed, but their noodles are quite good. I loved the shape and texture of the noodles. Perfect consistency since I like my noodles chewy! However, the rice dishes were just average. Now to the Teawood brick toast! It's SO delicious. What I love about it is that it's drenched in this cream sauce which keeps the toast moist. I prefer the chocolate because the fruit flavor was too much fruit for me. I've been here four times already, and all four were at different times of the day. Come for dinner if you want to wait an hour or more. It's crazy busy during dinner time. I was not happy at all. They also call all their numbers in Chinese, so if you don't speak Chinese you're at a bit of a disadvantage. Also, order in advance because you're only allowed to be in there for an hour! Now go eat their tower of toast.

After traveling from Vietnam, we were tired but hungry and ready to explore a bit of Hong Kong for the night and needed to find a restaurant open later than others and which served great food. After reading reviews on Yelp about TeaWood Taiwanese Cafe & Restaurant, I figured this would be a sure bet. I was right. The food was quite delicious and the Mango Ice Cream Toast Dessert we ordered was sublime. I have never had a dessert anywhere like this before and it was unique and really, really good. This cafe and restaurant offers a wide selection of coffee and tea drinks, fruity sodas, food, and desserts but does not serve alcohol which definitely makes it a hot spot for a younger clientele because of this fact. It was incredibly busy, clean, and impressive; however we sat for about six minutes until we were greeted by someone even though wait staff kept walking by and looking at us. Once we were greeted though we received great service and ordered pork dumplings and the entree (I can't remember the name of it but it was really good). The entree has a soft boiled egg, rice, minced beef, sausage, and what seemed like collared greens. We then decided to order a toast ice cream dessert and I am so glad that we did because it was awesome. The juxtaposition of the crispy toast combined with the cold and extremely creamy mango ice cream with pieces of fresh mango scattered on top with cream was delicious. Just a note, the dessert takes about twenty minutes so order it with your food to have it timed accurately. I would recommend this cafe and restaurant to anyone who wants to try something unique because I have never had a dessert like they serve in the States.

The tea shop was bright and roomy, nicely decorated and clean. The menu was bilingual with beautiful food photos. The staff was efficient but not attentive enough to offer us glasses for water and bowls for sharing. There was a 90-minute time limit but we didn't feel rushed during our stay. We ordered TeaWood Stewed Beef Noodle, Taiwanese Style BBQ Sausages, Taiwanese Style Marinated Meat Combination, and Traditional Taiwanese Style Chicken in Soysauce, Sesame Oil and Wine. The beef noodle was rich in flavour yet not too greasy. The self-made thick noodle was cooked perfectly and the texture was great. The beef was juicy and delicious. The cilantro added an aromatic flavour to the broth. The BBQ sausages came with sliced garlic and green onion. Eating them together was a good combination, the simple ingredients enhanced the already tasty sausages. The marinated meat combo was another great appetizer. The dish contained two chicken wings, sliced duck gizzard, soyed beef, pork belly, tofu, and half a soft-boiled egg. The egg just melted in the mouth and would leave you wanting more. The rest of the meat was yummy as well and not too salty. The traditional chicken came in a ceramic bowl with a tea candle underneath to keep it warm. This dish was different from what I've ever tasted before. The chicken was deep fried, the pieces were quite small and a tad boney. The taste wasn't bad but it wasn't what I was accustomed to for traditional Taiwanese style chicken. A little expensive but amazing and authentic Taiwanese food. I would like to come back and try their famous desserts next time.

They visited Oddies and we wanted to try egg waffles so we walked there. Getting there was admittedly a steep trek but it was completely worth the walk. It's a small shop that was easy to miss, but there was a nice spot to sit down inside. We bought the Fancy Pants parfait, which was somewhat pricey (about $10 US). We opted to eat it on the way back to our hotel. The gelato was soft and creamy, and had multiple layers of tantalizing flavors (peanut butter, cookie chunks, etc.). It was super flavorful and delicious. The egg waffles themselves were crispy on the outside and custardy and soft on the inside. They were the perfect amount of sweetness and absolutely delectable when eaten in a spoon with the ice cream. This was so, so yummy and unique- definitely somewhere to go and wish we had time for a repeat visit!

There is a reason why this place is so popular: it feels very home-y with the booths along the sides of the shop and round family-style tables. We arrived around 9:20pm on a Monday night, with little to no line. Just a short 5 minute wait for tables to clear up. In that time, we noticed dessert bowls served in pretty yellow Chinese-style porcelain bowls. Once seated, a Chinese menu peered up at us from under a glass-topped table. I quickly asked for an English menu and a lady kindly brought it to us. I was originally eyeing the walnut cream 合桃露 or the almond cream 杏仁露, but considering my slight cough, decided against anything nutty and heavy, and went for the red bean sweet soup with tangerine peel 陳皮紅豆沙, and boy am I GLAD that I did. It wasn't too dense or too watery. The red bean was blended quite smoothly into the soup with small chunks here and there. There were no visibly large red beans as you would see in other places. While I previously preferred the large chunky "hong dao sa", I think my tastes buds have changed, and have found my go-to place at Yuen Kee. In addition, what I liked best was the use of the tangerine peel - which gave the red bean soup a new uplifting citrus-y smell and taste, and provided a pleasant and natural sweetness to the soup (compared with overly and unnaturally sweet ones elsewhere). My friend's sesame soup 芝麻湖 was just as delicious! Like my red bean soup, it was perfectly blended, and not too grainy, nor too thick or goopy of a sesame mixture. I only wish ALL the desserts came in the yellow bowls - ours came in plain white bowls. You can be sure I'll be back once my health is fully restored.

The worst thing (or best thing) that could happen is you eat one for them. The tongsui we ordered were all very basic and while they were delicious, I couldn't tell if they were better or higher quality ingredients compared to other shops across Hong Kong. If I were to be in the area and wanting tongsui, then sure why not. But I am unsure if I would purposely take the train and walk here.

The guacamole was offered in generous portions, and the only thing that I could possibly say they weren't generous with, in terms of portion size was my juice. That's fine though. I'll definitely be back to try a few other menu items.
