Made a stop here on a walking tour, where we learned a little bit about their egg tarts. Though they seem like their main attraction, I opted for their red bean bun. It was the same price at 12 hkd and tasted nice, not too sweet, which is how red beans should be. The ladies working were friendly and the bakery was kept very clean.
Solid bakery with great fresh Dan tats. They have milk flavour which is really unique and I love it a bit better than the standard. Their Dan tats are the baked variety and as far as baked ones go I think these are amongst the best around. Creamy and sweet custard, great texture in the crust, slightly crispy. Also tried their Lo Po bing老婆餅 and it is quite good too.
Forget bagels and croissants, I want egg tarts, bbq pork pastries and salted egg pastries. This famous Hong Kong spot offers some of the finest local baked goods at very reasonable prices. The egg tarts had an amazing flaky crust and smooth, jiggly egg custard filling. The salted egg pasty was a last minute decision but it did not disappoint, with a slightly sweet pastry crust and a tasty cooked yolk in the middle, unique and delicious. The bbq pork pastry was savory and crispy, so good. It would definitely not be safe for me to live near this place!
If you're looking for Chinese egg tarts, I would come here! Tai Cheong Bakery is located in Central, Hong Kong. They have a variety of egg tart flavors to choose from, we got the regular Puff Pastry Egg Tart and Milk Egg Tart. Both egg tarts were delicious and are sure to satisfy your cravings.
Came to the bakery for their known best egg tarts in Hong Kong. Ordered the original and crispy crust tarts, the crispy crust was good but egg lack flavor, same with original. The price of this tarts are more than other places.
Part of Central Hong Kong since 1954 and famous for nearly as long a visit to Tai Cheong Bakery sees little changed from the early days, early morning queues dissipating as the sun sets though the shop's famous Egg Tarts are made right up until 19h00. Known for Cookie-style Crusts, the standard version rich and eggy with less sweetness than many, guests will also be enticed by the creamy "Milk" Tarts plus traditional Wife Cakes and Sugar Fried Dough served warm right up until closing.
Delicious dan tat (egg tarts), as well as various other pastries. Though they do serve other egg tart variants (e.g. extra thick crust or milk tart), I personally love the classic. It has a flaky yet soft crust and the filling is just the right amount of eggy and sweet. Eat them fresh and hot! I also ordered some low paw beng (wife tarts), filled with watercress, as they're one of my favorites back in SF. Wouldn't say they're superior, but all the same, I'd definitely come back to Tai Cheong for the egg tarts!
Best egg tart in HK!! I admittedly prefer a butter crust egg tart to a flaky crust one so the ones here particularly resonated with my taste buds! The egg custard filling had the perfect consistency and was not too sweet. Wish I had gotten another egg tart from here instead of the ones from the other overhyped bakeries!
Most delicious egg tarts I've ever had. Definitely get the original variety, as they're the best with their cookie-like crust and delicious custard filling. The egg tarts with puff pastry, however, had barely any flavor. Always a bit of a waiting line, but it moves fast. This place is so worth it.
I came here for some Egg Tarts and Red Bean Rice Puddings. They were delicious . The egg tarts were $10 each. The egg tart shell was buttery and crispy while the custard was smooth and silky. These were the best egg tarts I've had in years. The red bean rice puddings were $13 for 2. I brought them home and had them at night. They were also great in quality and value. The staff was nice and the store was clean! 10/10 would live there for life.
I remember when this place was famous but not fancy. They had (& still have) the best egg tarts in town so they've up the prices, HK$10 each, and move to its current location & did some fancy renovations. I pine for the grubby old place up the street but I'm glad they did this, survived the pandemic and more people know about this place. They deserve it.
Tai Cheong Bakery 泰昌餅家 has been in business since 1954. They are famous for their traditional Chinese baked pastries. All their pastries still make by hands in small batch. Egg tart is probably what you need to try and what they most famous for. Fresh baked all through the day. The crust is super buttery just take eating a butter shortcake cookie. The egg custard is velvety and smooth with a great eggy taste Definitely give it a try! I have yet find egg tarts as good in Toronto as yet!
Egg tarts here are the bombdigity! I was walking around in the central area of Hong Kong, and was craving an egg tart. So quickly got on to the Internet and found this place a couple blocks away from where I was. By the time I reach the store around 3 PM in the afternoon there was a long line already. The line move pretty fast, in less than 10 minutes I got to the front of the line I was Able to get a freshly baked still very warm fresh egg tart. And that thing was absolutely delicious, taste like heaven! The regular egg tarts are nine dollars HK. They also had a bunch of other baked items as well which I didn't try, but people did mention they were just as delicious. Definitely a pretty famous spot for egg tarts.
"I always thought of myself as James Bond." - Michelle Yeoh You must think I'm a freak for giving all the egg tart bakeries on Hong Kong Island perfect scores. Well yea, I can be a freak lol, but in this case it's all the bakeries "so far", not all were exceptional, but damn most are! Tai Cheong Bakery is the OG of bakeries on my list. Established in 1954 here on Lyndhurst Terrace, Tai Cheong Bakery is a legendary Hong Kong bakery famed for pioneering cookie-crust egg tarts. Known as a favorite of the last British Governor, Chris Patten, it is considered a must-visit for warm, buttery egg tarts, along with their signature Sha Weng (Chinese donuts). Bakehouse and Hashtag B Bakeries are the innovative ones that turned the "egg tart wars" upside down with modern recipes and Michelin baby followers lol. On the other side you have Tai Cheong Bakery that has been using the same recipe for 72 years. All amazing bakeries yet something in my heart will always favor the originals. On my visit I arrived about 10 minutes before opening and was second in line. For the 10 minutes I chatted with the sweet Korean lady who was there for the same reason as me... original egg tarts! There's a menu sign posted outside - lucky for those waiting in line because it's a photo menu with Chinese, Japanese, Korean and English translation. Once the doors opened I was second in line and the line of about a dozen formed behind me. Auntie greeted me in English and I ordered the following: Egg Tart (Cookie Crust) 12 HK$ x2, Puff Pastry Egg Tart 12 HK$, Milk Protein Egg Tart 15 HK$, BBQ Pork Pastry 7 HK$ x2. I actually wanted the Coconut Egg Tart, but oddly I ended up with eh Milk Protein Egg Tart. Ok, still ate it! Ambiance can be described as a good chi bakery, and apparently this is the original location from 1954, if so it was really clean and inviting. I didn't see a sit-down area tho. Everything I had delicious, yes including the Milk Protein Egg Tart I didn't order lol. The traditional Egg Tart (Cookie Crust) amazing with flaky crust and tasty filling expected from only the best Dan Tat! In the end, Tai Cheong Bakery is a must for egg tart fanatics. In fact, the menu was diverse enough to walk out with no egg tarts and still be happy as a clam. I heard the buns here are delicious. My only regret was not having a second visit, but it's only because it's located in Central and I was staying in Causeway Bay. Next time I'll jump on the Ding Ding for a second visit! Out of all the "traditional" bakeries this was tops! Pls follow my IG travel adventures: @eric_travel_guru read more
Excellent dan tat (egg custard tarts) here, line moves quick, and they have several kinds - traditional, puff pastry crust, milk protein (instead of the traditional egg yolk filling), coconut tarts, and more. Service is efficient, they have little boxes that fit up to 8 dan tat each, and the vibe is both cliche and classic. Friends devoured every single one I bought. read more
For daan tat (egg tarts), you need to ask yourself what you're in the mood for. Are you looking for traditional custard or Portuguese custard? Do you want a puff pastry or cookie crust? Puff pastry or cookie crust, there's no wrong answer, but I prefer puff pastry. For the traditional variety with a cookie crust, line up at Tai Cheong. The golden custard is smooth, creamy, and tender. The eggy flavor is the star here and it's just sweet enough. The puff pastry crust is flaky and buttery. The cookie crust offers a sweet crunch from the shortbread. read more

Is the 蛋挞 here very good? Yes. Amazing? Well... At the risk of being portrayed as a hater, I do appreciate the egg tart here, but it's not really quite my style. The redeeming qualities include the freshness and warmth of the tart. The custard is shiny and is really warm when you bite into it. The custard is eggy and adequately sweet enough. What I don't really care for is the crust. It's more like a cookie crust and I'm not a big fan of that. This offering lacks much flavor and sophistication in comparison to elite bakeries that do puff pastry. Puff pastry crust v. cookie crust, I always go for the former when it comes to dan tat. Maybe that should be one of the questions to ask on a first date. :-P The bakery provides no seating, no tables, and nothing to encourage you to eat around. I had to walk down the street for a trash can. For HK, $9HKD (a little over a buck in the U.S.) is actually kinda pricey for a dan tat. But hey, when the former HK Brit governor gives this place his blessing... read more
Yummy egg tarts!! Service was fast and they have warm egg tarts ready. They also serve a variety of other desserts but we didn't try any of them. We had a weird experience at the place when we paid. We gave the lady our cash and she put it in the drawer and took out change and put it down on the counter next to her. I think she forgot and started demanding that we pay. We then showed her that we did pay with the cash. She then realized and with no apology handed us the cash back. Cash only. Or you can use your octopus card. read more

If you're craving some fresh egg tarts that you know will taste good no matter which location you buy it from, you have to try Tai Cheong Bakery. They're located all around Hong Kong and sell amazingly delicious egg tarts. Even if you're not aware that there's a store selling egg tarts nearby, the delicious aroma from the bakery will be taken in and you'll find your feet leading you to the store. Plus, the many Tai Cheong Bakery signs with pictures of enticing egg tarts are sure to get your attention. I've been to a few different locations throughout Hong Kong and loved each egg tart I've gotten. Each one is about $1 USD, and if you come during a certain time, you're able to score a discount on the egg tarts or pastry items. Tai Cheong sells bread, salted egg pastries, and other goodies, but seriously - you only need to get the egg tarts and you'll be happy. Egg tarts were a golden yellow and firm in the middle. The crust is slightly flaky, but has a similar texture of a cookie crust. These egg tarts are much taller in height as opposed to being wide, which means you get a lot more filling per egg tart. The filling is delicious - not too sweet, but still has that true egg taste. Taking a bite along with the crust - the best midday, morning, afternoon, nighttime snack. Many of the Tai Cheong bakeries have these gigantic egg tart sculptures next to their storefront where you can take a picture with an egg tart. It's amazing. Highly recommend you trying the egg tarts - especially when they're fresh! But if they aren't fresh, they're still tasty. Egg tarts sell out quickly! I still think the best egg tarts are from Gold Garden Café in HK. Kam Wah Café is a close second, and then I would rate Tai Cheong right after. I'm sure there are a lot more local mom and pop shops that have amazing egg tarts, but these three are seriously that good. read more
Best dan tat (egg tarts) you've ever had. Ever. Tai Cheong is walking distance from my apartment and it's a must have when you go to Hong Kong if you're an egg tart fan. The crust is super flaky and the egg tarts center is a perfect creamy not too sweet and not too soft - amazing consistency. There's no seating area at this bakery and it's nothing fancy, so people just buy their pastries and enjoy it while walking to work or wherever they might be headed to that day. The size of the egg tarts are also a bit larger than the ones you get at a dim sum restaurant, about the size of my palm making one egg tart more than enough to satisfy my cravings. Just a few steps walking distance south and you'll also find the best, silkiest milk tea and lemon tea you've ever tasted that goes superb with your egg tart. read more

So good that we came back twice! Ordered the go-to egg tart, red bean pastry, and sugar puff thing that looked like a large cream puff or beard papa's. Everything was so delicious and fresh. They're really fast so we actually didn't have a line at all either time we ordered. Probably bring cash, not sure if they take card. read more
We came here as part of a Food Tour around Hong Kong. Our tour guide was from Hong Kong and chose to take us here since this place was well known for their egg custard tarts. The place is small, and you can order the tarts but there is no where to sit. We were here on a weekend so the line wasn't too long. We got several of the egg custard tarts, and each one is relatively large. I've never had egg custard tarts before so I have nothing to compare it too, but this tart was delicious. HK is known for these tarts so it was great being able to try this pastry. The tart itself is sweet with almost a creme brûlée type of consistency. We really enjoyed this place and being able to taste a true egg custard tart. We would come back! read more

Tai Cheong has the best egg tarts in Hong Kong. At least that's my verdict. Anyone smart will just focus on buying only egg tarts from here. Egg tarts are what made Tai Cheong famous. A little history.. (I am beginning to feel like a history teacher, lol..) Tai Cheong Bakery first opened its shop in 1954 at Lyndhurst Terrace in Central, Hong Kong. There was a pastry chef, Chef Au Yeung created the first cookie crust egg tart and won the award "The best Egg Tart in Hong Kong". The last Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten was a big fan of Tai Cheong egg tarts. The cookie crust is very unique. Oh yeah, one fellow yelper mentioned about the egg tarts here are made with shortbread crust, I definitely know what a shortbread crust is. Implying Hong Kongers do not, that was definitely not a nice thing to infer. Anyway, I am definitely smarter than someone and will only review Tai Cheong just on their egg tarts. My favorite egg tarts in the world will be those of Tong Heng in Singapore. Tai Cheong comes very close and sitting on #2 in my list. Sorry there are no #3 or #4 but just two lonely brands of egg tarts in my list. These two different egg tarts are in a league of their own just like Bugatti and Koenigsegg. Tong Heng has a flaky butter crust and Tai Cheong a cookie crust. Both surrounding creamy good quality egg custard that are not overly sweet. If one is lucky and is able to buy these two famous egg tarts when fresh, the egg custard will be wobbly (in a good way of cos, haha). My only gripe is there is no Tai Cheong in Causeway Bay and the one I went near Admiralty Station has closed down. That was my highlight when I stayed at JW Marriott a few years back. I would be waiting near the store for it to open and purchase those really fresh Tai Cheong egg tarts. Oh and the service is great here! :) read more
There was no line at all presumably due to protests. Egg tart crust was hard (not crunchy) and wasn't buttery enough, egg was also not sweet....almost tasting a hint of salt. Meh...not what egg should be in my opinion. I came here on two occasions hoping the initial visit was a one-off, but it tasted the same the second time, so not going to fool myself a third time. read more
Solid HK-style egg tart. Despite coming towards the end of the day, the tart that I got was still warm, which was much appreciated. Excellent, buttery crust and nice filling that wasn't cloyingly sweet. In comparison to the famed egg tart at Golden Gate Bakery in San Francisco, this one definitely holds its own (if not slightly better). That said, after all the egg tarts I've eaten in my life, I think I'm just a bigger fan of Portuguese egg tarts than HK style, but that's just personal preference I guess. read more

Considering the extremely long line, I was hoping the egg tarts would be amazing but they were okay. The pastry is buttery and filling is creamy and not too sweet. In my opinion compared to Golden Gate Bakery in SF, the pastry is much better from Golden Gate as it has a flakier crust vs the cookie like crust from Tai Cheong. Compare to other egg tarts around HK, you can get something equivalent without the wait. read more
The egg tarts are good at Tai Cheong! I actually bought my egg tart from the small Tai Cheong inside the Star ferry terminal at TST; however, there was no yelp listing for that store, so I'm posting mine here. I'm sure I've had them when I used to live in Hong Kong, but it's been 10+ years since I was last here, so it was great to try them again on my recent visit in May 2015. Yummos, delicious. read more
So... I've never waited in a line for egg tarts before since China in general has an abundance and a lot of other shops are equally as good. We came during Chinese new year break and I didn't expect there to be a line(something in my head didn't connect). This shop was more popular since I expected it to be! It's basically all tourist haha. I think this shop is so popular because 1. it's in Central 2. Popular foodie area 3. The blue facade When I walked in the tiny shop, I was very shock that the shelves were practically empty, couldn't even try the other pastries. So, we ended up with 2 egg tarts and they were good. The crust very buttery, sweet with a hint of saltiness and the eggy part was mildly sweet with the perfect egg tart consistency. I would said the sweetness level is sweeter than the usual egg tart. Overall it's good but I wouldn't come back to this location or wait in line for it. There are tons of other locations by the way! They just don't have the blue wall for IG purposes. Haha. read more

$8 HKD for an egg tart is not cheap! But for any San Franciscan that's familiar with Golden Gate Bakery in Chinatown, I'd say Tai Cheong's version is comparable. The egg custard is velvety smooth, and the crust is beautifully browned, buttery and flaky. Best when fresh, Tai Cheong's egg tarts are a delicious snack or dessert. Hopefully you can get past the smell of Lush's aromatic soaps, so you can take in the enticing smell of Tai Cheong's freshly baked egg tarts from the SoHo branch. Otherwise, there are many other branches throughout Hong Kong. read more

Very solid egg tart. Probably #3 in my lifetime. I would say that Golden Gate still has this place beat as well as a place nearby my home. They do a very good job here and it's a must-try in the area. The line moves very fast, so no worries. read more

Delicious egg custard tart, especially when they're fresh and hot. Cookie crust vs pastry crust, I still prefer the later but still enjoyed the tarts here. read more
There is some serious hype behind Tai Cheong. I think they became famous way back in the day when some high ranking British shopped here or something. The egg tarts are good but there's no way I can say they are the best. Egg tarts are also $9hkd so the value isn't good at all. If you are nearby, I'd recommend grabbing one or two to try but not much more. read more
