We probably had the pineapple buns with butter almost every day we were in HK. They had great pineapple buns that were warm, crispy top and ice cold butter. The one with pork chop was also super good! the lettuce and tomato were a surprising addition but totally made the sandwich. of course the milk tea was yummy!

Kam Wah Cafe (Cha Chaan Teng) is located in Mong Kok. I grew up eating this style of food and coming here bought back so many childhood memories. Think of it like Diners in US, but with Chinese food. We came here around noon time, so it wasn't too busy. Be prepared to share a table if it's busy. It's very common at Cha Chaan Teng in Hong Kong. The lunch specials (before 11 AM) are great deal but we just missed it. Oh well, we had a lazy morning! Even though we missed the specials, it's still way cheaper than the States. $132 HKD ($17 USD) and no tips for 2 people. I recommend getting the HK style French toast. The gooey peanut butter in the middle of two deep fried toast. A heaping of butter! Yum! Total comfort food! Ham and egg sandwich (classic). It was my first meal of the day, and I wanted a breakfast sandwich. The bread toasted just right and the eggs was airy. This is staple dish. My son wanted his favorite noodles - Stir-fried noodles with beef. It was savory, not too oily and hit the spot for him. Of course, we have to order the iced-tea with lemon in HK. Iykyk. I love this drink and it was made the way I like it without any adjustments! We were too full to order the Bolo Bao (popular pineapple bun) but we did come back to get it to eat at the airport. It wasn't all that, maybe it was meant to be eaten right away at the Cafe.

The only place where it is acceptable to eat a pineapple bun with a slab of butter inside is here at Kam Wah Cafe! My friend and I were fortunate to steal their last two buns when we went. With that, we wanted to try our first Hong Kong-style Milk Tea. The staff recommended to try a different milk tea and suggested one of our teas mixed with coffee. While I still preferred the taste of the original tea, I appreciate him for trying to put us on different combinations. The pineapple bun was huge, puffy, and had that perfect crackle topping that provided the sweetness to the bun. It was fantastic, though I wish it was a little warm as the cold butter didn't add much to it except more cals. I'm sure their other pastries are popular and I saw many diners enjoying their entrees. It is a great stop for dining in or for a takeout pastry, and their pineapple bun is iconic. I'm glad my first stop in HK was Kam Wah Cafe.

Went for the pineapple bun- place was quite busy on a Thursday morning! Very authentic feel- Cantonese is the language here with little English spoken, although they have an English menu. Pineapple bun was good, but not significantly better than the ones I've had in the US. The top was crunchier, which I do appreciate. I took out a lot of the butter, which is a big part of the dish but would make my tummy feel bad.

It was a carb-heavy morning but without regrets. Our party of five adults and two young children arrived around 8 am and managed to get a long table to ourselves. We shared the following: 1) Pineapple bun with pork chop 2) French toast 3) Egg tarts (2) 4) Cocktail bun 5) Mexican bun 6) Barbecue pork puff pastry (2) 7) Sausage bun 8) Chicken pot pie 9) Satay beef noodle soup 10) Ham and macaroni 11) Iced milk tea 12) Iced coffee-milk tea These were some of the best buns that we have had during our stay. My one slight complaint is the sausage bun in which the sausage to bun ratio was pretty significant. It was a very thin and flimsy sausage hidden in a huge, pillowy bun.

I have been eyeing Kam Wah for a while after seeing photos of their breakfast dishes, and it definitely delivered. The Hong Kong style French toast was rich and satisfying, and the pineapple bun with pork chop hit that perfect sweet‑savory combo. You're not coming here for warm hospitality, so if you can overlook the service, it's a solid stop for some tasty HK‑style comfort food.

I love Hong Kong and I love cha tsan tangs. Living in the San Gabriel Valley area growing up around San Gabriel, Monterey Park, etc, I'm used to going to cafes here. However, the cafes in LA aren't the same as the ones in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, you can end up sitting at the same table as another party but you get that authentic taste and they just make the food different in Hong Kong. We knew about this place before we got here and it's not just a tourist spot nowadays as there are still locals that know about this place. When you step right in, you definitely feel that Hong Kong vibes. A party of 4, we were able to get our own table. Spot was tight but no issues here. We ordered their egg tarts, pineapple bun, peanut butter toast, milk tea, and their egg/ham sandwich. I don't know why but the food in Hong Kong taste better than the ones in LA. Really enjoy the cafe food here. You can definitely taste the difference of the milk tea here. The pineapple bun though similar still tasted better. The brick toast had a big chunk of butter but tasted better. Really like this place and when I'm back in Hong Kong, I will come here again.

Got to HK way to early and this was one of the place open early. Yum, is all I can say. Maybe it the hunger speaking but everything is just delish as it looks. The pineapple cake is huge and with the filling are just adding a new level of yummy-ess. Prices are not bad either. The staff are nice and friendly, most don't speak English much, we just point to the pics and some Chinese that ii knew. It's in an old neighborhood but got that homey vibe plus the place is small bit pack of goodness. Check it out if you're in the area.

Came to Kam Wah Cafe just for the pineapple bun. I had already eaten, but couldn't leave Hong Kong without trying one from this iconic spot. I grabbed one to go and ate it while walking around. It was still warm and toasty. The bread was soft, and the crunchy, sweet top had a nice pineapple flavor. Great texture, not too sweet -- just a perfect balance. It was also bigger than I expected... I was full after eating half of the bun! Next time, I'd love to try it with butter and actually sit down to enjoy it properly. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

This little cafe is tucked on a side street between Mongkok and Prince Edward. The pineapple buns with butter and iced HK milk tea are a must! Their egg tarts are pretty good too.

A small piece of butter in a gigantic pineapple bun

We arrived at 6:30 a.m., the restaurant's opening time. After sitting down and reading the menu, I told a waitress we were ready to order, but she replied curtly that they needed time to set up. Another waitress repeated the same. Around 6:45, we finally got water and placed our order. The pineapple bun was large, but the butter portion was small. Another customer later asked about prices, and the waitress told her to check the menu instead of answering directly. Their exchange soon turned unpleasant. Overall, the atmosphere felt rude, and the staff's harsh tone was worse than unwelcoming. As a longtime Hong Kong resident, I found the food just average and not deserving of its award.

    Monica H.

Kam Wah is a staple of HK. You must visit if you are in the area. Their pineapple butter bun lives up to its hype! Deeeelicious. They are always packed. Literally sitting with strangers even when you're a party of two sitting in the booth. They WILL squeeze two more people in!

    Andrea L.

PSA allergy alert: HK style French toast has peanut butter in it. Now that you know, the HK style French toast was delicious. And the pineapple bun was the best I've ever had. I thought the butter in the middle was a little extra but it was perfect. Service was standard average what you would expect in HK, no surprises there.

Instead of grabbing a tray and serving yourself, in this setup the items are out on display in tubs and you point to each one that you want the worker to package for you. There is always a crowd here, so items run out quick. I love their version of the egg tart (蛋撻) and the wife cake (老婆餅) is one of the best I've had. A popular pastry is their hot dog pastry (腸仔包), which is fluffy and almost buttery with every bite. They have an awesome variety of shao bing (燒餅), which they bake and grill almost looking like stuffed pancakes, but they're usually filled with a sweeter ingredient such as bean paste (豆沙), sweetened custard (奶黃), azuki / red bean (紅豆), just to name a few. Everything ranges from $3-7 HKD, which in my book is extremely affordable. Try to target the items you want ahead of time and be sure to bring cash. I wouldn't bother calling ahead of time and I would suggest being patient with the staff when the crowds are fierce. ___________ (#1) If you can't rock the 廣東話, be prepared to point.

Highly recommend: Walnut and peanut brittle which was very light and crunchy vs the American version that feels like you're going to break your teeth! Skipping the macaroons that they are known for, I shall talk about their creme brulee. Before knowing this place, the only impression on this classic french pudding is sweeten steamed eggs and I have given up in making myself into liking it. It was not until one day I might as well be out of my mind to give this pudding another try in Paul Lafayet have I had my impression turned 180 degree. The custard was so velvety and creamy that I could not believe it is made of eggs; it was more like a very thick cream yet not as oily. The pale yellow mixture is flecked with vanilla seeds and you can tell right away they are using the fresh stuff but not the essence. The crowning glory is the caramel crust on top. Each and every pot of creme brulee will be dusted with demarara sugar and burnt with a blow torch. The sugar will melt and scorch to form a sweet, crispy crust; combining with the smooth and soothing interior, that's a couple made in heaven. I have to admit that the per unit prices of individual items are rather high and it is not a place that you can come often; nonetheless, for the quality of the desserts here, it is totally worth the money to reward yourself and treat yourself with good quality puddings.
