Soya bean custard (ginger)
Francis L.

Dream Tofu (Tofa?) is a small hole-in-the-wall joint located in the hustle of HK's central district. As the name suggests, its speciality is a classic HK dessert that they call 'soya bean custard' (also known as tofu fa, tofu flower or tofu pudding). Their offering is of decent quality. We tried the ginger and black sesame variants - both were great, though I'd recommend the ginger (or plain) for those trying this dessert for the first time :) If you've got a larger appetite, consider the snack that includes peanut- or sesame-filled rice balls. There are only 3-4 seats set along a narrow ledge so group gatherings aren't ideal here. Service is quick and friendly. Tip: Dream Tofu is located close to both Mak's Noodle and Yat Lok, so it's a convenient place to grab dessert after getting your wonton noodles or roasted goose :)

Food: They serve a variety of soy based dessert: tofu dessert (tofu fa), soymilk, congee with soybeans, etc. There are many flavors. For example, the soymilk comes in chocolate, aloe, coconut, ginger, etc. Red bean tofu dessert with ginger soup (hot) - This was a perfect combo for dessert. Definitely hit the spot for tofu dessert, and the flavors were just right and not too sweet Service: The woman that was helping us was super friendly and chatty. She answered all the questions we had and told us about the celebrities that have been there, what kinds of dessert are popular, and even gave us some samples to try. Price: Red bean tofu dessert with ginger soup - $28 Next time I will have: Pork bone congee with soybeans! ($28)

Great place to get tofu fa. I really liked just plain tofu fa with almond. Snack * Tofu fa with almond (Excellent) * Tofu with everything (Excellent)

Th softest milk pudding ever. Not too sweet not too bland but just right. The store is a bit small tho.. ps the spoons are adorable

Dream tofa is a hidden gem! I wouldn't have thought about venturing in till someone recommended the place to me. It's a small outfit with just 3 seats. The tofa is silky smooth and there are many varieties to choose from. Only non-gmo soy beans are used. I also tried the soy bean milk with black sesame - really good. It's fragrant, flavorful, and keeps your hair black! ;)

Chilled tofu dessert with ginger and basil seed

This is one of the 2 late night Chinese dessert options in Central, the other one is 玉葉 on peel street. If you after some "proper" tofu dessert without the Central price tag, this is the place for you and you don't have to go far into the dark side or along either side of the island. Tofu dessert is so versatile, a thumbs up to whoever invented it, you can consume chilled during summer or hot during winter. You also add a variety of toppings, so please don't be too creative and stick to the true asian style. So chocolate sauce is a big no no even they offer on the menu for the adventurous.

This place is not bad for your tofu fix. Hot or cold is available. They have soya milk. Lots of flavors available to add on to the tofu. The service was good but the place was very tiny so it is a quick in and out type of dessert place.

They have a couple of locations and I went to the one located in Central HK that was near my hotel. The shop was pretty small and was on the middle of an incline hill. The shop is pretty small and tight. There is only one person working in the front. The table we sat in was not clean. It was sticky and the employee did not bother to wipe it even when we were seated. We have to order through a QR code. There was a seasonal flavor which was strawberry sake at the time. I got the strawberry panna cotta kakigori. Strawberry panna cotta: The strawberry flavor was artificial. The inside of the kakigori was artificial strawberry cream and whipped cream. The shaved ice was icy and crunchy. It was not soft. It was made by regular tap water ice instead of the milk/cream ice that Japan would use. There was no panna cotta on the bottom. It was just more whipped cream that I think they were fooling us thinking we wouldn't notice. Overall, the kakigori was not cheap. It was about $20 USD. It was huge, the same size as you would get in Japan. I think the size is enough for 2 people to share. Another thing is that they include 10% service charge on the receipt. Barely any service but whatever, most restaurant in HK automatically include a 10% service charge. I recommend to try traditional HK dessert dishes instead of this fail imitation of kakigori.

They visited Oddies and we wanted to try egg waffles so we walked there. Getting there was admittedly a steep trek but it was completely worth the walk. It's a small shop that was easy to miss, but there was a nice spot to sit down inside. We bought the Fancy Pants parfait, which was somewhat pricey (about $10 US). We opted to eat it on the way back to our hotel. The gelato was soft and creamy, and had multiple layers of tantalizing flavors (peanut butter, cookie chunks, etc.). It was super flavorful and delicious. The egg waffles themselves were crispy on the outside and custardy and soft on the inside. They were the perfect amount of sweetness and absolutely delectable when eaten in a spoon with the ice cream. This was so, so yummy and unique- definitely somewhere to go and wish we had time for a repeat visit!

Such a shame too, since they had really interesting flavors like Cheese Christ and whatnot. The egg waffle dessert itself was awesome, but there was some sour pudding on the bottom that I did not enjoy. Not really sure what that was, to be honest, but the rest was delicious nonetheless. Don't get me wrong, the food is gorgeous and definitely more attractive than my face is. But minus 1 star for the really really slow service and sour surprise in the dessert. BUT STILL!! "I always thought of myself as James Bond." - Michelle Yeoh…read more You must think I'm a freak for giving all the egg tart bakeries on Hong Kong Island perfect scores. Well yea, I can be a freak lol, but in this case it's all the bakeries "so far", not all were exceptional, but damn most are! Tai Cheong Bakery is the OG of bakeries on my list. Established in 1954 here on Lyndhurst Terrace, Tai Cheong Bakery is a legendary Hong Kong bakery famed for pioneering cookie-crust egg tarts. Known as a favorite of the last British Governor, Chris Patten, it is considered a must-visit for warm, buttery egg tarts, along with their signature Sha Weng (Chinese donuts). Bakehouse and Hashtag B Bakeries are the innovative ones that turned the "egg tart wars" upside down with modern recipes and Michelin baby followers lol. On the other side you have Tai Cheong Bakery that has been using the same recipe for 72 years. All amazing bakeries yet something in my heart will always favor the originals. On my visit I arrived about 10 minutes before opening and was second in line. For the 10 minutes I chatted with the sweet Korean lady who was there for the same reason as me... original egg tarts! There's a menu sign posted outside - lucky for those waiting in line because it's a photo menu with Chinese, Japanese, Korean and English translation. Once the doors opened I was second in line and the line of about a dozen formed behind me. Auntie greeted me in English and I ordered the following: Egg Tart (Cookie Crust) 12 HK$ x2, Puff Pastry Egg Tart 12 HK$, Milk Protein Egg Tart 15 HK$, BBQ Pork Pastry 7 HK$ x2. I actually wanted the Coconut Egg Tart, but oddly I ended up with eh Milk Protein Egg Tart. Ok, still ate it! Ambiance can be described as a good chi bakery, and apparently this is the original location from 1954, if so it was really clean and inviting. I didn't see a sit-down area tho. Everything I had delicious, yes including the Milk Protein Egg Tart I didn't order lol. The traditional Egg Tart (Cookie Crust) amazing with flaky crust and tasty filling expected from only the best Dan Tat! In the end, Tai Cheong Bakery is a must for egg tart fanatics. In fact, the menu was diverse enough to walk out with no egg tarts and still be happy as a clam. I heard the buns here are delicious. My only regret was not having a second visit, but it's only because it's located in Central and I was staying in Causeway Bay. Next time I'll jump on the Ding Ding for a second visit! Out of all the "traditional" bakeries this was tops! Pls follow my IG travel adventures: @eric_travel_guru

There is a reason why this place is so popular: it feels very home-y with the booths along the sides of the shop and round family-style tables. We arrived around 9:20pm on a Monday night, with little to no line. Just a short 5 minute wait for tables to clear up. In that time, we noticed dessert bowls served in pretty yellow Chinese-style porcelain bowls. Once seated, a Chinese menu peered up at us from under a glass-topped table. I quickly asked for an English menu and a lady kindly brought it to us. I was originally eyeing the walnut cream 合桃露 or the almond cream 杏仁露, but considering my slight cough, decided against anything nutty and heavy, and went for the red bean sweet soup with tangerine peel 陳皮紅豆沙, and boy am I GLAD that I did. It wasn't too dense or too watery. The red bean was blended quite smoothly into the soup with small chunks here and there. There were no visibly large red beans as you would see in other places. While I previously preferred the large chunky "hong dao sa", I think my tastes buds have changed, and have found my go-to place at Yuen Kee. In addition, what I liked best was the use of the tangerine peel - which gave the red bean soup a new uplifting citrus-y smell and taste, and provided a pleasant and natural sweetness to the soup (compared with overly and unnaturally sweet ones elsewhere). My friend's sesame soup 芝麻湖 was just as delicious! Like my red bean soup, it was perfectly blended, and not too grainy, nor too thick or goopy of a sesame mixture. I only wish ALL the desserts came in the yellow bowls - ours came in plain white bowls. You can be sure I'll be back once my health is fully restored.

Heyyyy, do you like durian? Or even want to give it a shot despite the crazy smell it may emit or…read morethe odd taste it might exude? I believe one of the ways to try durian without having to be afraid of it is by tasting it through the various dessert dishes here at this cute little place. Having no idea that this place existed, I was pretty thankful to my new local friend who suggested this place. It's located in a small little street, similar to an alley way, and by the time you get near it, you'll definitely see a long line of people waiting to get in. The wait itself isn't that bad. Most people just come here to eat dessert and leave right after. Once seated, my friends and I spent some time browsing through the extensive dessert menu and settled on trying the durian with crystal seeds (one of the many popular dishes) and watermelon and lychee with crystal seeds. In summary, the watermelon and lychee were ok. The watermelon ended up being too watery for my taste and the lychee wasn't too memorable. Both tasted decent but definitely not a must try. For the durian, this was surprisingly good! I am normally not a durian fan (the stench gets to me sometime) but here, you couldn't really smell too much of the durian in the dish. The taste of durian was also soften quite a bit, making this dish a bit more doable for those who do not like durian. I found this dish to be pretty tasty and not too sweet and it was unique to eat it with the crystal seeds. Overall, this is a great spot to stop by for desserts. If you're not a fan of durian but can tolerate the smell of it wafting through the restaurant, this place is great to try other HK desserts at an affordable price.
