You have to visit Oddies! We were searching for a good dessert place near our hotel in Central HK and were watching a TLC show with Ian Wright as a guest. They visited Oddies and we wanted to try egg waffles so we walked there. Getting there was admittedly a steep trek but it was completely worth the walk. It's a small shop that was easy to miss, but there was a nice spot to sit down inside. We bought the Fancy Pants parfait, which was somewhat pricey (about $10 US). We opted to eat it on the way back to our hotel. The gelato was soft and creamy, and had multiple layers of tantalizing flavors (peanut butter, cookie chunks, etc.). It was super flavorful and delicious. The egg waffles themselves were crispy on the outside and custardy and soft on the inside. They were the perfect amount of sweetness and absolutely delectable when eaten in a spoon with the ice cream. I got the Night Wolf, which allows you the choice of coffee gelato or some adaptation of caramel I think. Such a shame too, since they had really interesting flavors like Cheese Christ and whatnot. I was hesitant to try Oddies because we have something similar to this in SoCal (Cauldron Ice- cream), but I'm glad we went! It's located on an unassuming street in the SoHo district in Central (HK island) and was hard to find , but it was worth the trip. The eggette here is so much better - crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside- than any other place I've tried. They also have different filling (e.g. pineapple, red velvet, chocolate chip, apple pie etc) eggettes. The gelato ice-cream was creamy. We went with The Woods ($88HKD for a large) which came with low-fat milk gelato, apple pie eggette, apple raisin campote, salted caramel gelato and cinnamon crumble in a cup. Oddies is one of those fusion dessert places that combine a Hong Kong delicacy (egg waffles) with the more Western desserts of soft serve, gelato and miscellaneous confectionary. Conceptually, it's nothing too new, but their execution is somewhat notable. While some are immediately turned off by anything that's artisanal/handcrafted, I'd still suggest giving this place a try if you'd like to have a dessert with a complex, yet well complemented palate. While it is easy to achieve this with ingredients of similar flavour profiles, as seen in the standard "Fancy Pants" combination, which was ultimately sweet, rich and creamy ingredients with other sweet, rich and creamy ingredients, good, but not remarkable, I was very impressed by what my friend ordered- the night wolf: a unique mix of different gelatos and toppings/garnishes, that supposedly changes every day, and is ultimately up to the artisan to decide the ingredients. That particular day, the night wolf consisted of more chocolatey ingredients, paired with bold exotic fruit flavours such as passion fruit, and if I'm not mistaken guava. The mix of sweet, bitter (dark chocolate), and slight acidity in addition to the bold fragrances ultimately elevated the night wolf that night to the next level. When it comes to being at Oddies, you can be more conservative with your choices and you probably won't be disappointed, but I'd strongly recommend being more adventurous and trying their more unusual mixes. While your spirits may be dampened in the event that it's (really) not to your tastes (I.e. after 5 mouthfuls you're still flinching), but while those combos may make you wince at first, just give it a try, there's a chance that you'll end up getting something that blows your mind. read more

Eggettes are a local favorite in HK and recently, a lot of creative eateries have been transforming them into different flavors. I visited this place on the last day of my trip, and boy was it worth it. Obviously what had intrigued me was Oddies concept of fusing the amazing egg waffles with gelato ice cream. The place was relatively small, and the menu is somewhat confusing, overwhelming and seemingly overly complicated, but its all gravy once you get your goodies. I tried the "Night Wolf" here, which is described as "Italian low fat soft gelato twisted with 66% dark chocolate served with buttery crumbles, caramelized banana ice cream, passion fruit panna cotta, brownie and chocolate chips eggettes and crunchy flakes." Upon reading the description, it sounded like way too much was going on and the abundance of flavors would ultimately clash, but it's actually pretty damn tasty. We went with the mob which has a matcha theme because my sister and I love matcha and we were not disappointed. Was convinced to check this place out after seeing photos on Instagram and everything definitely tasted as good as it looked. We had the Mob (size small; $65 HKD) and it was absolutely delicious. I expected everything to be excessively sweet for me, but the sweetness level was perfect. I finally made it to the Central store of this popular dessert spot. My friend and I went at around 9:30pm on a Wednesday evening and it pretty dead. I didn't mind because this allowed me to lolligag and try different gelato flavors. Instead of having the different monster-sized creations like the original Wan Chai store, the specialty at this store is their gelatos. All of the unique flavors are created by themselves. Don't expect the plain "chocolate" or "pistachio" here. All of their flavors are a unique combination of different things. They're super fun and innovative, and most importantly, extremely tasty. Although the person patiently let us try a wide variety of the flavors, my friend and I decided to share the classic Night Wolf, the only creation from the Wan Chai store that is served here. It was just as amazing as I remembered it. The chocolate is a rich, dark chocolate flavor and we got to pick the base flavor. We chose a mixed berry. How could I not write an ode to my favorite HK snackfood??? Oddies is tucked away in an unassuming street in Soho, but man, are its sweets good. Gelato: Seriously, sample and try each of the flavors. I love the Vietnamese iced coffee, and I think the sesame is really great too. Texture and flavor is super on point. Eggette (egg puff waffle): The novelty flavors are seriously so good. The chocolate chip brownie is a good choice if you want something fun, sweet, safe, but not overwhelming. The red velvet I didn't actually like too much--it's stuffed with cream cheese, not cream cheese frosting. The mooncake one though. Man. That one is a game changer. Probably one of my favorite desserts I've ever had--it's filled with lotus paste and bits of salted duck egg! So innovative and honestly so good. Eggettes are one of the most popular street snacks in Hong Kong. They are basically waffles but in the shape of many egg puffs so an eater can pull them off one by one. Oddies Foodies utilizes the eggettes in an interesting way. It combines them with an ice cream sundae to create their eggette parfaits. I ordered the "Kido": artisan cookies and cream gelato with Nutella sauce, Nutella custard eggette, cookie dough chunks, and caramelized croutons. It looked amazing. However, it looks better than it actually tastes. Individual parts of the parfait, especially the cookie dough chunks, were great but they did not really mesh all that well together. I was also not a big fan of the gelato. It might have been because it was low fat. It was a bit of a contradiction for the parfait. I was already conceding that I would not be eating healthy by choosing to down a lot of sweets. As such, just put in the best tasting gelato with the rest of the parfait. Nevertheless, definitely find and eat some eggettes in Hong Kong. The eggette parfait is very photogenic at Oddies Foodies even if the taste did not blow me away. We were so excited to try this egg waffle place once we arrived in HK because of its popularity. Surprisingly, it was super empty when we stopped by during the day. We got the "Mud" special, which was supposed to be green tea themed egg waffle parfait. Let's just say I was expecting a lot more from the egg waffles (ours came out brown and not green like the display picture). I had been to their original branch in Wan Chai and was a little worried at first that they didn't have their frozen yogurt and was happy to find out that the machine is just in the back and it is available. I have a hard time believing it's low fat frozen yogurt because nothing low fat/no fat ever has tasted so good. The shop does seem a little cold and clinical which is my 1 complaint.
