Everything is in Chinese, so luckily my friend is a Hong Konger and was able to help me order. I ordered from the stall on the far right corner diagonal to where you walk in and got some pork dish with cabbage and vege rice and my friend ordered from a different stall (last one directly to the right of when you walk in) and ordered some rice with tomato/egg and salt and pepper pork. While my dish was served piping hot and the sauce on the pork was just the right amount of sweet, my friends dish was luke warm, dry and a bit stringy. I was very pleased with my meal but my friend wasn't, so I think it will be a mixed bag. If you don't speak or read Chinese you will find it very difficult to order anything. The atmosphere was quite canteen-y and not the cleanest but it filled a whole, I paid less than $50 and I didn't get sick.

I'm very glad we found it though as it was a pleasant change from the typical Cantonese types of places around this area. The following were the standout dishes we had: Stir-fried purple cabbage with raisins & honey in Urumqi style---this was recommended by our server and it was outstanding. Savory, slighty sweet, complex, slight crunchy, light tasting. Roasted mutton ribs with Xinjiang herbs---there were 4 perfectly medium rare ribs with lots of meat. A container of mixed herbs (cumin was the main one I could discern) and ground red chili pepper. Sprinkling this on the ribs really elevated the flavor. Sauced spicy chili diced chicken in Xinjiang style---nice big chunks of thigh meat in a complex sauce with mixed vegetables (green & red bell peppers, onion, potato). The sauce had a subtle curry essence to it. It was good but it didn't rock my world. And lastly being in this area of Kowloon for the last few days I have found very little in the way of decent better beers. As much as I had hankered for a nice craft IPA, I settled for a Belgian Tripel. The wonderful thing is it was served in a bowl instead of a glass. Very rustic & old school---I loved it. Btw, this place was Halal in case that's a preference. Best meal I've had in Kowloon so far in my short stay!

"The horror...the horror..."…read more That's what I thought as soon as the roast chicken arrived. The chicken was on top of a metallic basin with a rod stand attached vertically in the middle. Said poor bird was forcefully put through the rod, so that the end of the rod protruded out of the breast area. It looked like something out of a bad scary movie...or Doom. While there were some good aspects of the dinner I had here, plenty of it left much to be desired, and hence the lower grade. The theme of most of the food involved that night was this: tasteless. Everything surprisingly tasted bland. I expected spice. I expected umami tastes. I definitely expected "wok hei". I expected flavor. The roasted pork was absolutely disappointing. There was barely any meat, barely any layer of fat, and the skin was rubbery, not crispy. Oh and I did mention it was tasteless? Oh and back to the chicken. I ended up doing the carving and did a decent job, grace of God. They gave me one plastic glove to aid me in getting the job done. I could've moon-walked after that. While the chicken was tender as all get-out, it was, get this...BLAND. There was a flavored salt that accompanied the chicken and you needed to apply copious of that stuff to make seem somewhat tasty. The clay pot rice with Chinese sausage was decent but not amazing. Again, it lacked flavor. The sizzling pork knuckle in black pepper sauce could have used more flavor as well but it was passable. At least it was warm. There were raw oysters ordered but...raw shellfish at a dai pai dong??? Ummm...hepatitis, much? For me, the highlight of the entire dinner was the garlic shrimp, but because it was one of the only dishes that actually had flavor (albeit it was overwhelming garlic). The shrimp were cut symmetrically and cooked with a crapload of garlic. Yeah, I wasn't expecting to kiss anyone that night, so I just ate quite a few of those tender crustaceans. We were given a variety of desserts and they were a mixed bag. The fried taro/egg balls were amazing and almost single-handedly brought this restaurant up from 2-stars. Yeah, anything fried is good but these were brilliant. They came really hot and the outer fried section was crispy. Inside was half taro paste and half egg-milk custard. Both flavors were excellent. We also had a variety of herbal jellies and dessert rolls. The durian cream roll stood out the most, as you could imagine. I guess if you wanted to try durian, but were scary crapless to try the raw, unadulterated version of the sometimes reviled fruit, the roll would be a good idea. My relatives had reserved a VIP room, which was creepy-looking going up. I was concerned I would need to bring out my non-existent "particular set of skills" to protect myself from the nefarious. Maybe because we were given a VIP section (table, real chairs, in a room, tablecloth), the price didn't seem quite as impressive as I was led to believe. And I still needed to bring tissues too! (oh and bring hand sanitizer)

Yup, it's not "where is the best dim sum" or where should we go. It's "where is the best roasted meat". As a result, from the recommendation of a couple taxi drivers we found ourselves here. At first glance I was worried to eat here because it looked like an actual hole in the wall restaurant so I was worried about sanitation. However, there was no turning back because my dad was dead set to eating that roasted chicken and pork. Even with my hesitation the food was really good and not overly greasy as I imagined. My dad and mom loved it and couldn't stop eating because it was just that good. After eating there it felt like you were actually experiencing Hong Kong because you were surrounded by office workers who were having a meal after work, families, and friends so it didn't give off a touristy feel like some other restaurants. It was still extremely popular because every seat was taken and my dad will likely come back on our next trip!
