With a pair of locations in Hong Kong, the second tucked amidst many similar eateries in Wan Chai, Chung Kee Congee is locals sort of place that opens up early and remains busy thanks to fair prices and competent traditional dishes including the eponymous Rice Porridge. Serving the same menu from 06h00 until 23h00, a wide variety of Fish-based Congees complimented by simple fried Noodles and steamy Turnip Cakes, Cheung Fun feels rushed and overly wet while Chinese Donuts are more oily than those from nearby Trusty Congee. Opting for Century Egg with Shredded Pork in the Porridge, everything served in less than ten minutes at a table shared by strangers, suffice it to say these folks get both texture and taste right with broken grains silky smooth and everything in balance including the Green Onions.

Finely chopped ground beef congee

We were looking for traditional Chinese breakfast near our hotel and found this restaurant. They pointed to the dinning area and we walked in but need to share the table with someone already sat there. After looking around, we ordered the foods which were delicious. We went back three more times. Also, around 2 pm, they distributed the unsold foods to the elders who lived in the neighborhood weekly.

Beef rice noodle. Chinese fried doughnut!

This was our first meal in Hong Kong after a 15hr flight. My sister wanted something soupy/congee and we saw that this place was on the way to our next destination, + had decent reviews. Upon arrival, we were a bit skeptical as people were ordering to go, but no one sat in the restaurant. We gamble and did we come up. This place is a hole in the wall. We ordered freshly made chicken congee, Chinese fried doughnut, and steam beef noodle roll. The congee was super flavorful. I tasted a bit of ginger infused in the congee and the chicken was super soft. The Chinese doughnut dipped in the congee was perfection. My sister liked the steam beef noodle roll, but I thought it was okay. Overall, this place really makes you feel like a local and everything is made fresh! I would stop by here again, especially since everything only costed 51HKD (~$7usd).

Classic hole in a wall Congee restaurant. Delicious Congee for a song. I customized every bite by adding a bit of each of the sauces available on the table. I also had a delicious sweet warm Soybean Milk to wash down the Congee. Great way to start the day. Be prepared to to share your table with other diners. Was super fast, friendly and efficient. HKD 15 for a big bowl of congee and add a couple bucks for the crispy hot deep fried dough to go with it..... How can you beat it!? It isn't my favorite congee spot in the neighborhood but this one opens early enough for breakfast when most won't open till 11am for lunch. (Congee is typically a lunch item in HK.) However, their rude service and crammed space warrant a 4-star rating. So I asked for extra green onions, then later some peanuts. Alright I understand I could've asked her all at once but my walnut-sized brain sometimes make me forgetful. So when I asked her the second time, she uttered grudgingly, "You should've told me earlier ma'am." Ha-ha.... Okay, sorry mom. That's right. I'm not sure how much English they know and there's no English and there's no menu really. My bf who's an expat here just points and it works. Pointing and music are both universal language. Also, the restaurant is super crammed so it is not your choice to not eat with strangers at the same table. It's still pretty common in this type of local restaurants in Hk so you'll just get used to it if you're becoming a local. For a classier congee place, try the chain Congee King on Heard Street.

It's one of my favorite- pig liver congee with youtiao for breakfast, yummy!

It's a very localization food for Cantonese people! The congee has many options to choose and it is very tasty!

English menu!

My husband and I love jook (porridge, congee, whatever you want to call it). And this place really hits the spot with all of its options. 3 columns of their menu are dedicated to so many different kinds of jook. I love fish porridge, so I usually get some combination involving fish filet (22HKD). Husband often gets abalone and chicken (40 HKD), which is actually a larger bowl and portion than what I order. The jook comes out piping hot. So darn good. And as you would expect from any HK establishment and especially from the hole-in-the-wall ones, everything comes out super quickly. In addition to our porridge, we order a rice noodle. You really can't go wrong. We'll be returning to try some different variations. We just love the variety of jook here and are always excited for breakfast at this place. Can't wait for more already! If you can't read Chinese, they do have a menu with English translations. Don't be afraid to ask!

One of the earliest opening congee places I found in Wan Chai - at 6:00 am. No frills congee - Chinese doughnut, congee, fried noodle, rice noodle wrapped doughnut, and more. $59 HKD for four dishes - pork and 1000 year egg congee, rice noodle with beef, Chinese doughnut, and rice noodle wrapped doughnuts. Very standard for HK, but quick and affordable.

Pork & 1,000 year old egg congee

Had my $19 bowl of pork & 1.000 year old egg congee. Yummy, full of flavour and enjoyed every last drop. I will be ordering from there a few more times while staying at the Novotel! As good as it is to have the hotel restaurants, it truly doesn't make sense not to step out and explore all there is to offer in the neighbourhood, including this congee place, open from 6am to midnight (as per their sign at the front of the place. So quick too, got my order w/in minutes of ordering! Highly recommend it!

But for me it's different. A Hong Kong cafe is like heaven for a stoner who has the munchies (just to make it clear, I've never been stoned. At least not for a long time!) But I do see the appeal for someone with these cravings. Everything comes with gravy or some type of tomato sauce. They make Coke Cola ice creams floats. French toast squares with ice cream. Funky right? But we ordered: Baked Pork Chop: this was a decent version. I think one more pork chop in the entree would have made it complete. The tomato sauce with the rice was a nice blend. Mixed grill: this was my wife's entree and she didn't like it much. She said it was ok. Flat noodles: that's what it's called in the menu but I know it as Chow Fun. I always like this dish and Kam Kee makes it decent. Service was proficient and friendly. My wife said it's a three star eatery but what takes this place into four category is they put effort into the design or ambience of the cafe whereas many places don't invest in that. It's a nice looking restaurant with decently satisfying comfort food.

The milk tea was very good. Gave 3 stars as the beef was a bit chewy. Chicken would have been better.

This place is a little hard to find because you have to walk all the way to the end of a street with a dead end and it's hidden in the corner. The restaurant itself is clean and spacious. The service was pretty good by Hong Kong standards. I ordered the scramble eggs with BBQ pork over rice and it came out in less than ten minutes! The dish looked amazing and the portion was pretty big, although I had no trouble finishing the whole thing. Hong Kong's scrambled eggs are on some other level. This spot makes them runny, and although I usually don't like my eggs runny, they tasted pretty amazing here. Doused with sweet, light soy sauce and succulent pieces of famous Chinese BBQ pork on a bed of rice, this was definitely one of the most comforting and satisfying meals here. Definitely give it a try if you're in the area! I have a new love for scrambled eggs :)

The creamy chicken macaroni soup with ham and abalone strips (and side of soft eggs with toast) made me feel like a kid again. The beef and egg sandwich, and spam and egg sandwich were exactly as expected; they came out hot and fast and in generous portions. Drinks were great too, especially the lemon tea served with real citrus slices (both hot and iced were solid), and the milk tea was as authentic as it gets. Value felt fair for the area. From the menu, tea/breakfast-style sets sit around HK$40-46, lunch plates are roughly HK$52-64, and most drinks are in the HK$18-24 range (with a few around HK$26-28), so you can order a full spread without the bill getting out of hand. Good to know: they only accept cash and Octopus, so don't count on credit cards. Overall, an easy 4 stars for a dependable, grounding first stop.

This review is only for the pineapple bun…read more I do not recommend. On multiple, multiple food review sites writing about the best pineapple bun in HK, Kam Fung made the list. Happened to be in wan chai today so why not- We got take out for two buns- one with butter and one without. But even before opening the package we knew something was wrong. Each bun was wrapped in plastic, but was so extremely heavy. How could a bun be so heavy? Opening it and taking a bite - it's like chewy raw dough. I'm not sure if it was really raw, but that's what it felt like. I couldn't finish it. I didn't even want to take a second bite, really. I'm actually very surprised at the good reviews on the bun here. Its one of the few times that Google reviews are more fair and accurate than Yelp reviews for me. Don't trust the lists!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't get this bun!!!!

Perhaps it's just not for my kind of tastebud... my younger son liked his macaroni in soup. My older one did not like his "bor lor yao"... which is the pineapple bun with a thick piece of butter... all the baos were very dense... and not fluffy like other ones we've tried. The only saving grace - the Chicken Pie! It's crusty and flavorful. Anyway, small shop, a few tables and you will be sharing with strangers if you're solo. They do pour the left over soups into a bucket right underneath your seats... so not quite sanitary... but you'll live. Bring lots of wet naps. Cash Only.

Although it was busy on my first visit, it didn't feel overwhelming, nor did I feel rushed and herded by staff. Orders are done through the QR code on the table, but my phone service was wonky that day and one of the employees was very nice and took my order. That did lead me to panic ordering the HOTTEST egg toast, but that's my own fault and I surely paid the consequence. I like spicy food, but that lacked flavor and only burned. They have a big menu, including vegetarian options and famous HK bakery items like egg tarts and pineapple bread. The regular egg toast is delicious, a heaping serving of creamy eggs over thick toast. Then of course I had to try the famous Hong Kong Milk tea, which was also delicious. It's made with a full bodied black tea and has a rich earthy flavor. No sugar added so it's not sweet unless you make it so. When I was finished, I paid at the register and was on my way.

The bolo bao was a bit of a disappointment due to the bread being cold. I don't know if there was an option to just tell them we wanted it hot. Also ordered Hong Kong milk tea but the waiter misheard even though he repeated it and sent a sweet tea instead. Not bad for a comfort food spot.

The pretense is non-existent and locals (including myself!) seem to love it here. So like many noodle spots in HK, this place is fairly small. No big tables for 5+ but quite a few small'ish round tables that are good for solo eats or the invaluable food companion. The aroma coming from the semi-open kitchen should be enough inspiration for folks to know what they want upon arrival, but just in case they have the menus outlined along the wall. An easy way to start? Try a wonton and beef brisket with your choice of noodles. The wontons are somewhat pillowy in texture and full of flavor while the beef brisket is braised well while maintaining a perfectly chewy bite. The noodle variety is good, with egg / rice noodles winning over the crowd though I feel the e-fu noodles take the cake. Lastly, do not sleep on the beef tendon. It's practically butter when done right. Chui Hing does fancy itself as a HK style cafe, so other dishes like congee, fried fish skin, fried rice, may appear on the menu, focus on what to stack in your bowl instead. The staff is really helpful and welcoming.
