fish congee
Emily G.

As soon as we arrived at the storefront, we were ushered to a small table and immediately placed orders for 2 types of congee (fish and beef) and the fried fish pancake. It came out quickly too. Everyone is in the zone eating and slurping up congee (some other tourists who are also enjoying). Because the tables are small and chairs are not the most comfortable, it's definitely a quick bite spot, but so worth it. The congee is delish!

The famous congee shop in Sheungwan. Actually, the same owner has a brisket noodle shop a few doors down and a couple of branches around town all under the 生記 or Sang Kee name. The hot congee literally cooks the ingredients that is put in it after you order it. That's their thing. It means there are few types of congee, like sanpan or pork blood cube, you can't have here. It was different, & good. It comes in bigger bowls and higher prices than other congee places and it's more or less a meal a bowl.

Congee decked out

While spending three weeks in Hong Kong, this was the one place I kept returning back to. All the ingredients were super fresh and the congee comes out SUPER hot. Honestly, I reccomend on trying everything here. The fish balls are stellar- you can tell the difference between local and foreign, the fish filets/belly were soft and tender, the beef slices were delicious. I've gotten my congee decked out on all visits and I'm getting hungry thinking about it. The place does get very busy quickly. I've come during early morning (5-6AM) and also around regular breakfast times. There are three rooms next to each other (2 serves congee and 1 serve noodles) and it's a very quick go in and go out situation with efficient service. The congee also comes with ginger and soy sauce if you want to add more flavoring to the add ons but even without it, it tastes amazing. Best congee of HK!

Large preserved egg beef porridge

We came early for breakfast on a weekday and there was zero wait. We ordered the preserved egg and lean pork porridge in small and large. The size of the bowl looks similar, but the difference was in the ingredients. There was at least 1 more preserved egg in the large. Porridge comes extremely hot, but cools off quickly. Plenty of lean pork in the porridge for the savoriness. Seating is fairly barely bones. It's just a bunch of stools with small tables. Perfect for a quick bite. Cash only. Pay at the end.

This is your hole in the wall congee shop in Sheung Wan. I was recommended this place by some locals so I decided to try it out. It's a small shop and your typical Chinese style diner - shared community tables, cash only. I was told the fish belly and beef congee is good so I got that! My sister got the pork centurion egg one and my dad got the fish belly congee. All the congee are delicious. For the fish congee, they give you a side of soy sauce with ginger which helps balances the fishiness of the congee. I really enjoy the congee. The flavor of the pork congee is delicious. The fish in the congee is fish and for people not used to eating fish with bones - be careful! I don't speak/read Cantonese but they noticed I had trouble reading the menu, so they do have an English menu with pictures. This definitely feels like a local joint though.

Very hole in the wall place but the congee is excellent. There isn't much seating so expect to sit with others in the same table. There is a good selection of meat to go with your congee but many people recommended I get the fish fillet. I'm usually not a huge fan of fish in my congee but it was delicious. The congee came out streaming hot, and it was excellent. The only disappointment came from the Chinese donut (literally translated to "oil stick"). It was extremely tough and not crunchy at all. Don't get this. You won't be disappointed by the congee though.

This is definite a place where you gotta get in early if you want to find a seat and order what you want. They make everything fresh daily, and the quality definitely shows. The highlight is definitely the fish options here as they use the belly part, which tenders to be more flavorful and tender. Do be careful as bones are still in. Place is small and seating is packed pretty tight. Menu is pretty standard and easy to manage. There's really no surprises on the menu here, they just do it really well. You don't get the usual MSG taste as much as some of the other places. Bowls are also super loaded with ingredients. The congee is served crazy hot and I actually cool it down quite a bit. The consistency of the congee was just about right. The fish was definitely the star, but the pork wasn't too shabby either. I was sweating like mad by the time I finished the bowl. Good thing they got the A/C running. Good eats on the cheap. Solid stuff.

Congee is one of my favorite Chinese dishes. Sang Kee is an excellent hole in the wall spot for it. It was definitely different from what I am accustomed to in New York. It had a tougher texture compared to the smooth porridge I generally taste in New York. Although it took me a few bites to get used to it, I liked it. I ordered my favorite congee: preserved egg and meat. It was excellent. The meat was especially good and tasted like a pulled pork. The fried Chinese fritter is usually used to dip and soak up the congee. Sang Kee's dough is not too oily. It also comes in a small plate with only a few pieces compared to two long sticks I usually get in New York. However, it was enough. I only wanted to try a little bit. If I wanted more, I could have ordered multiple plates of it. Sang Kee is not easy to find. Burd Street is a side street and the restaurant is a small hole in the wall. It is not the corner restaurant. I also do not read Cantonese so I had to use pictures to match its sign to photos. Although the menu is in Chinese, everything has pictures. As such, it is easy enough for tourists to just point to what they want. If you are visiting and planning a trip to Hong Kong and looking for recommendations, feel free to message me for my itinerary. You can also find the electronic copy through the link my profile.

Cash Only like every place in Hong Kong. This is original Congee and super local! The Fish belly was good but it had tons of bones. Didn't have to wait to be seated, and apparently one of the best congee places in all of Hong Kong.

Pork with preserved egg porridge

There are 2 shops on the same block that says Sang Kee. One says noodle and one says porridge but when we went in the morning, they both serve the same thing. We ended up at the smaller one, which was significantly more run down and gave us a more authentic feel. The service was actually good here. I read that they have an attitude but we did not experience that. The ladies were very friendly. We ordered their famous fish congee and our go-to porridge of pork with preserved eggs. I really enjoyed their pork and preserved eggs congee. The porridge was thick and flavorful. The fish congee was also pretty good but a little difficult to eat with all the fish bone. It also needed the soy sauce with ginger for the flavor because it's pretty plain otherwise. The whole restaurant is full of locals, mostly people eating there on their way to work. People get in and out fast so it's not a place to leisurely hang out. They didn't charge us for the chinese donuts. We ordered one and then asked for another but neither was on our bill so I am assuming that these are free with your meal.

Natalie L.

The congee is the best in Hong Kong. I like that you can have the option to order different sizes. The ingredients are fresh and well worth the price. It also come with green onion and soy sauce. The 'fried donut' is made fresh and you can taste the difference. They also open early around 6:30a so if you are jet lag it is a great place to start your day!

Definitely a no frills, hole in the wall shop. Luckily when we stopped in (after walking past it the first time), we didn't have to wait to be seated. Ordered the fish belly congee and I was a bit overwhelmed by how much fish there was! Also, despite being the slow eater that I am, the congee was still piping hot by the time I was wrapping up my meal. The taste and consistency were well done. I was stuffed by the end given how loaded the bowl was with ingredients.

Fish belly congee and the dip, it doesn't need to look like much, this is one of the best things here!
Simon K.

There is something to be said of a place that serves congee, and you are willing to go in the heat of summer in the morning (or at night) to eat this comfort food dish knowing that the brief brisk of a/c while eating scalding hot rice porridge is a balance till you go back out to the humid crazy weather of Hong Kong, yet this is the situation, and we have done this everytime we are in Hong Kong. Full props to this place, as they have two locations on the same block, weird as this may sound, we have been to both, one with no windows, and the other, on the corner of the block, and whichever place you are in, it's usually got a pack of people who are just needing their fix, or needing a recharge, come as you are, just know you are probably getting the best bowl of congee you have had in your life. Don't expect to sit alone at a nice table here, it's a practicaly order your dish, eat, and get out, fast food congee, and everything is in Chinese! One of the favorites that has been mentioned here is the fish belly congee, and this bowl of hot goodness is just that, even for the 'nomnomnivore' I was with, who doesn't even like fish, for her to order this... and devour it like Godzilla running through a small town and wanting more, this says a lot! You think.. what.. some small shredded pieces of fish mixed in with rice in a pot of water... nope, real big chunks of fish swimming in ever blissful congee with a side of dipping sauce for the big chunks of fish. This is a meal by morning standards, and will keep you tummy warm going through the day. Even for myself, I'm not a crazy fan of ordering this dish back home, but when I'm here savouring each bite it's pratical bliss, here take my money, and I can see you are taking many peoples money here with practically no noise of talking as everyone is just slurping away! I have had different types of congee here, also go along with a Chinese donut, and a glass of refreshing iced lemon tea, it may not look like much, heck the two shops do not look like much, but there is something about this place that is mentioned on numerous websites and people, and why they keep on coming back, cause they do it right. English menu's.. what is that, even the name it's not in English, so good luck finding it.. but once you are here you have arrived to congee heaven!

Fuk Loi Kui? F that. It's not what you think it is…read more It's the Cantonese pronounciation of the restaurant 福來居, but to make it more confusing it has another name embedded in as 福來居(牛記)海鮮飯店 (Ngau Kee) Seafood Restaurant. There's something about this place that gives me a "je ne sais quoi" kind of vibe. And that is, there is some intangible quantity and quality, that really makes this place totally awesome, provided you have the right minded set of dining companions with you, who share a love of great no nonsense local food. If you want killer stir fry in the hood kind of eats, with a decent seafood selection that is not entirely off the wall expensive, yet full of local flavor, FLK is a very sound choice. It is within very easy walking distance from Prince Edward MTR station, and is very near the roasties shop famous for roast crispy skin pig (still using charcoal) 永合隆飯店 Wing Hap Lung Restaurant. Started off with a bottle of ice cold Tsing Tao. I forgot how large the bottles in Hong Kong are. The Tsing Tao's in the states at Chinese restaurants are generally dwarf size bottles in comparison. So if you have 4 or more in your party, one bottle is good to start. They chill the glasses, a little extra attention to detail to make your "Cantonese izakaya" experience better. Too many good things on the menu, FLK has this dai pai dong esque vibe, and while it is indoors, the atmosphere and food is close enough that you can have an awesome time in here. 豉油王煎中蝦 - soy sauce supreme (Maggi) pan fried medium prawns. Incredible umami and flavor, but where are the heads?? Even the shells can be eaten! 薑蔥桶蠔 - ginger scallion stir fried oysters. A touch oily, but these are to be expected. Really awesome otherwise! Oysters are either from Canada or United States. 清蒸瓜子斑 - steamed melonseed grouper (wild fish). We arrived close to 8 pm, and by then the seafood selection from the styrofoam tanks were dwindling. At most maybe 3 to 4 kinds of live fish, and this melonseed grouper 瓜子斑 is certainly not a cheap specimen....but cheaper than having a kinki shioyaki at a local Japanese eatery! An extremely solid choice, well executed. The flesh came off the bones with ease. This is why when you travel to HK, eating fresh seafood is a must. It's a far cry from the farmed American fish at Cantonese restaurants in the USA. 上湯蒜子大豆苗 - large pea sprout with garlic in superior broth. Really hard to go wrong with this prep. Stir frying uses more oil, so this approach is healthier. 豉油王炒麵 - soy sauce supreme stir fried noodles. Haha back to stir frying because we want to equalize the guilt! When having seafood like this, ending the meal with a killer plate of carbs is a must, and soy sauce supreme noodles 豉油王炒麵 is a solid choice. It is also perhaps the de facto method of testing wok hay (the other tester dish is beef chow fun, but we're at a seafood restaurant). This rendition is very solid and intense. It's a touch on the dry side which is what I prefer. Oh, I believe they stock Yu Kwen Yick chili sauce, so you can ask for a little bit to make the noodle experience jump a few notches. Fruit platter for dessert (included in the meal), which was an extremely nice touch. Watermelon, pineapple, and papaya. Refreshing even on a mildly chilly January evening. Great food that soothes and satisfies. Even recommended by local celebrity Chef Leung of Hoi King Heen on his FB page!

They gave us a booklet along with the paper to fill out, and most of the dim sum was the classic dim sum that I'm accustomed to. Their chiu chou fun gor was alright for me. Their cheung fun wasn't the silky light type, so I was just alright with it. Their Chicken with Sticky Rice wraped in Lotus Leaf was huge though, way bigger than those in Los Angeles. Their fresh mango custard roll was my highlight though, as they had chunks of mango in the middle and it was sweet. Would try this again. I think the one other aspect of this place is the interior is really clean, and they have a decent amount of tables inside. Service is a bit more attentive as the area isn't as large.
