Beef Brisket & Wonton Noodles
Edward S.

As you approach Mak's Noodle, the sidewalk goes up and down some steps until you reach the shop. From the window, you see the chefs scooping broth, noodles, wontons, and brisket into bowls. You're here for a bowl of wonton soup or the noodles with fish roe. It's the food I loved growing up, and it's definitely better at the source. Beef Brisket & Wonton Noodles: The bowl is small, so you can order Chinese broccoli on the side or have room for snacks after your meal. Its delicious and complex broth has a deep well of sweet and savory flavors from shrimp shells and dried fish. For a perfect bite, the delicate wrapper of each wonton contains four plump and tender shrimp. The texture of the bamboo noodles is wiry and elastic. The brisket is super soft that pulls apart easily, yet doesn't disintegrate. If you need a jolt of flavor, you can opt for the red fermented bean curd sauce for extra briny umami notes. Beef Tendon & Wonton Noodles: Instead of the beef brisket, the beef tendon is a great change of pace. The tendon is soft and gelatinous. From the slow cooking, the connective tissue has broken down to provide the perfect melt in your mouth tenderness.

Couldn't leave HK without having some classic wonton noodle soup! The tables are pretty small, so they had to split our group up, but they managed to still keep our tables next to each other which was nice. The food came out fast too, so tables turn over pretty quickly.  I shared a one of the set menu items which was a good mix of egg noodles, wonton soup, and vegetables. The egg noodles were cooked to the perfect texture, and the soup was clean and refreshing! I enjoyed the wonton soup as well. Be careful with the chili oil provided at the table because a little goes a long way! Overall, a great spot for some casual comfort food. Don't be deterred by the line because they are efficient and things move quickly. Cash only!

The wonton noodles are made super thin and has a very fresh and bouncy texture. The shrimp wontons are plump and beef tendons are very tender and easy to chew. The soup comes out piping hot and is very flavorful! Definitely hits the spot.

Quickest snack! Came in for a small bite and it delivered! Chewy and thin egg noodles with a little vinegar is all you need to make your belly happy!

Mak's Noodle / Central (Hong Kong) -- It may seem mundane to get wonton soup in Hong Kong among all the culinary riches to be had, and truth be told, it wasn't the first choice Jamie W and I made for our first meal here (Kau Kee was way too packed). However, we managed to secure a booth when we walked in, so we thought it was a good omen of the food to come. It was. They don't veer much from their core best sellers. Jamie ordered the HK$73 Stirred Noodles and Beef Brisket, a simple plate of thin wok-fried noodles covered with tender pieces of beef brisket (photo: https://yelp.to/MrYlbPlJ8y). The noodles had an al dente texture that made them taste like a better quality chow mein, and the beef was meltably good. I needed to try their famous soup mixed with four different flavors - fish, pork, shrimp roe, and pepper - so I ordered the HK$73 Beef Tendons and Wonton Noodles (photo: https://yelp.to/WjGwUWLzfA). The soup was unsurprisingly rich in flavor. The shrimp wonton laid at the bottom of the bowl and were tasty treats with a nice chew. The noodles were a bit too stringy for my liking, but the pieces of beef tendon were more than satisfying. The HK$42 Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce provided a fresh, crunchy contrast to the beef and wonton noodles (photo: https://yelp.to/3NHJ1Sbn67). The meal was pretty quick because we were out of here in less than half an hour. FOOD - 4 stars...the soup and beef were tasty, the noodles fell a tad short AMBIANCE - 4 stars...clean and organized for a third-generation eatery SERVICE - 3.5 stars...fast, not much interaction TOTAL - 4 stars...don't estimate a wonton soup shop RELATED - Exploring Hong Kong? Begun in 1920 and still run by the fourth generation descendants of Mak Woon-chi a visit to Mak's Noodles on Wellington Street doesn't look much like the Food Stall it once was, but thanks to careful craftsmanship longtime visitors say nothing has changed about the Noodles whether boiled or stirred. Now with several locations in Hong Kong, attempted expansion to Singapore unsuccessful, Mak's flagship retains a loyal following despite a concise menu including juicy Wontons with or without added Protein plus thin-cut Stir-fry at fair prices.

As usual wontons n soup n shrimp dumplings were best!!! This time I tried the freshly shrimp with shrimp paste added to noodles!! Delicious and tasty!! Pig hands with Nan Yu sauces were so tenderness and soft textures on meats n tendons!! Services were so fast n efficient even it's a small shop!! The wontons soup are having those dried shrimp n fish paste inside the soup, if you drink all the soup, you would see the dark small pastes underneath the bowl!!

Service: came here around 8pm and they close at 9pm. Told us to place our orders quickly, so we did. My tea was always refilled when employees noticed it was empty and when my uncle dropped his chopstick, a new pair was handed to him quickly (without asking) Food: Quite yummy! The beef assortment dish was delicious and perfect if you love cartilage! Wouldn't take my word for it though since I didn't get a chance to try the side streets for this dish, but definitely better than the ones in America! For the wonton noodle soup, I didn't think this was worth it (50HKD for a small bowl). It was good, but I've had better. The wontons were small, but still fresh and had a good chewing feel to it. Idk how to say (tsong hou) in english Ambiance: good amount of tables, everyone is seated fairly closely. There are booths and 3 individual restrooms

I'm not a fan of wontons so I opted for their beef brisket and tendon noodles instead. So good! The brisket was tender and flavorful and the tendon wasn't chewy at all. The noodles were bouncy and had a great texture. The portion size is on the smaller side but prices aren't expensive and it actually helps leave more room in your stomach to try out other restaurants in HK!

Tried this place since they were in the list of tasteatlas on top 150 legendary resto. It did not disappoint! Tried the best seller noodle. Ample seating arrangement and comfortable seats. You see your noodles cooked. Waiting time is quick. They accept CASH only. No nearby atm, atm for banks does not accept if you dont have an account with them. No parking space. See images and videos below for further reference.

Great food, service, and friendliness. The portions are not bad. Don't expect big pho bowls but not tiny portions where you finish in three bites.

Finally back in Hong Kong after three years so it's time to update my review! This place always has a special place in my heart. Not only because it's famous and popular amongst the tourists, but also because they serve hearty wonton soup and noodles that really makes me feel at home! I recently went on a wonton shop hopping mission and compared to other places I've been to, Mak's wonton shines in its soup and noodles. The soup has the most classic Cantonese white pepper flavor profile along with the strongest fish aroma, which comes from the 大地鱼. It also exclusively uses the white ends of chives which give the soup another layer. The noodles too are delicious! It is the most al dente egg noodles I've ever had and it *stays* al dente throughout the meal. Their wontons are good but unfortunately not as jam packed with meat compared to other places. Its much more shrimp heavy (less pork flavors). The wonton wrapper is super smooth though!! I'm not the biggest fan of their chili paste because it has more of a fermented bean background but its still pairs well with their wonton/noodles! Amongst all the famous wonton places, their dishes are the most expensive and not that big in portion unfortunately. Nevertheless, its worth the hype to me!! I think locals and tourists alike should definitely check out Mak's at least once!!

Alvin Z.

The food is delicious and the prices are even better! Love it when aware winning food is unpretentious and affordable for all. The noodles were cooked perfectly wherein it's not too soft not too hard. The soup itself is super delicate with nice umami taste. Only downside was the wait but then again, that's how you know it's great!

Fuk Loi Kui? F that. It's not what you think it is…read more It's the Cantonese pronounciation of the restaurant 福來居, but to make it more confusing it has another name embedded in as 福來居(牛記)海鮮飯店 (Ngau Kee) Seafood Restaurant. There's something about this place that gives me a "je ne sais quoi" kind of vibe. And that is, there is some intangible quantity and quality, that really makes this place totally awesome, provided you have the right minded set of dining companions with you, who share a love of great no nonsense local food. If you want killer stir fry in the hood kind of eats, with a decent seafood selection that is not entirely off the wall expensive, yet full of local flavor, FLK is a very sound choice. It is within very easy walking distance from Prince Edward MTR station, and is very near the roasties shop famous for roast crispy skin pig (still using charcoal) 永合隆飯店 Wing Hap Lung Restaurant. Started off with a bottle of ice cold Tsing Tao. I forgot how large the bottles in Hong Kong are. The Tsing Tao's in the states at Chinese restaurants are generally dwarf size bottles in comparison. So if you have 4 or more in your party, one bottle is good to start. They chill the glasses, a little extra attention to detail to make your "Cantonese izakaya" experience better. Too many good things on the menu, FLK has this dai pai dong esque vibe, and while it is indoors, the atmosphere and food is close enough that you can have an awesome time in here. 豉油王煎中蝦 - soy sauce supreme (Maggi) pan fried medium prawns. Incredible umami and flavor, but where are the heads?? Even the shells can be eaten! 薑蔥桶蠔 - ginger scallion stir fried oysters. A touch oily, but these are to be expected. Really awesome otherwise! Oysters are either from Canada or United States. 清蒸瓜子斑 - steamed melonseed grouper (wild fish). We arrived close to 8 pm, and by then the seafood selection from the styrofoam tanks were dwindling. At most maybe 3 to 4 kinds of live fish, and this melonseed grouper 瓜子斑 is certainly not a cheap specimen....but cheaper than having a kinki shioyaki at a local Japanese eatery! An extremely solid choice, well executed. The flesh came off the bones with ease. This is why when you travel to HK, eating fresh seafood is a must. It's a far cry from the farmed American fish at Cantonese restaurants in the USA. 上湯蒜子大豆苗 - large pea sprout with garlic in superior broth. Really hard to go wrong with this prep. Stir frying uses more oil, so this approach is healthier. 豉油王炒麵 - soy sauce supreme stir fried noodles. Haha back to stir frying because we want to equalize the guilt! When having seafood like this, ending the meal with a killer plate of carbs is a must, and soy sauce supreme noodles 豉油王炒麵 is a solid choice. It is also perhaps the de facto method of testing wok hay (the other tester dish is beef chow fun, but we're at a seafood restaurant). This rendition is very solid and intense. It's a touch on the dry side which is what I prefer. Oh, I believe they stock Yu Kwen Yick chili sauce, so you can ask for a little bit to make the noodle experience jump a few notches. Fruit platter for dessert (included in the meal), which was an extremely nice touch. Watermelon, pineapple, and papaya. Refreshing even on a mildly chilly January evening. Great food that soothes and satisfies. Even recommended by local celebrity Chef Leung of Hoi King Heen on his FB page!

They gave us a booklet along with the paper to fill out, and most of the dim sum was the classic dim sum that I'm accustomed to. Their chiu chou fun gor was alright for me. They did put a good amount of peanuts in here but the exterior was a bit heavier on the dough side. Their siu mai and har gow were pretty good. Their cheung fun wasn't the silky light type, so I was just alright with it. Their Chicken with Sticky Rice wraped in Lotus Leaf was huge though, way bigger than those in Los Angeles. Their fresh mango custard roll was my highlight though, as they had chunks of mango in the middle and it was sweet. Would try this again. I think the one other aspect of this place is the interior is really clean, and they have a decent amount of tables inside. Service is a bit more attentive as the area isn't as large. I was most certainly full upon completion of this meal though haha.
