Since I and a few of us were early and while we're waiting for the rest of the party to arrive, different staff repeatedly rushed us to place an order. Yes, I appreciate the efficiency, but can't you also respect your customers' pace? The person who made the reservation hasn't even arrived yet! I must say, however, that they are very diligent about filling our drinks and clearing our plates. Then there comes the ridiculously priced plate of mantis shrimp. We ordered the pepper and salt mantis shrimp and the server suggested 4 pieces so we without much thought said okay. Man they were the best, biggest, juiciest mantis shrimp I've ever eaten! But guess what, each costs HKD 300 so just that plate alone costs $1200 (USD 150)!!! Holy crap. Way to reel us in on the expensive dish! What a surprise when we saw the bill! Deceptive bunch of people. Their crab was delicious but the fish soup was just alright. And their cold platter was a hit or miss. The soup is rich and flavorful, and the thinly-cut noodles offer a good bite. You can even request different cuts of duck with your noodles, or just get plain noodles if you wish. I always somehow end up here for a late dinner when returning from vacation. Service is hit or miss, with servers often rushing around and trying to get you out as quickly as possible. Local celebrities are known to frequent this restaurant, which explains the photos and signatures on the walls.

Our list of dishes included: Yeung Chow Fried Rice (揚州炒飯), Black Bean Clams (豉椒炒蜆), Salt and Pepper Fried Fish (椒鹽魚片), Shrimp w/ Eggs (蝦仁炒蛋), Tea Egg + Tofu (茶葉蛋豆腐), and Mantis "Pissing" Shrimp (攋尿蝦). The most underwhelming was the pissing shrimp, which a little meat and a lot of shells. When our bill ($780HKD) came out, there was a little bit of sticker shock. Not all is terrible. Despite the greasy and salty food, they were constantly coming back to make sure we had what we needed. There was no shortage of help and they took our feedback well, but chuckled when we noted the salt (Could it really have been MSG?). They have a bunch of tables and the turnover is quick enough to where even waiting isn't a big deal. Heck, there's even unlimited napkins here. Any HK'er would surely appreciate that. Anyone who is looking to drink will surely have it here -- there are beer girls walking around looking to sell by the bottle or by the bucket. I will say it was nice inside and it had air con and there was some thought that went into the ambiance. Anyway, it was still affordable from an American perspective and I enjoyed everything. I decided on two dim sum spots to try on this trip with Tim Ho Wan being the first. I came 6 PM on a weekday and it wasn't busy, we were quickly seated as there were plenty of available tables. Since we were not too hungry, we ordered the Shrimp Cheung Fun, Har Gow, and Siu Mai. It took around 5 mins for the dim sum to come out and the food looked good. However, it really seemed like some flavors were missing the umami taste that you would expect of dim sum. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a disappointing meal, so I would recommend trying other dim sum spots when in Hong Kong.

It is because the cheung fun was pretty darn good - way better than anything I can get back home. And the glutinous rice bowl? The best taste and texture in a glutinous rice I've ever had. This is a three generation business that just churns out good food. Currently run by second generation, Ng Siu-Fung, and with sons and other family members involved in the business, Keung Kee has been in the community for 70 + years and plans to be century old institution that puts out representative Hong Kong snack food. Yes, this is a snack shop, not a bing sutt, not a cha chaan teng, and certainly not a restaurant. They started as a street food cart selling only snacks. Their non-soup or congee dishes are still modestly sized for one person. Now, one of their signature dishes is glutinous rice in a bowl with lap cheong and lap mei, some mushrooms, and a sweet sauce. Thai Golden Phoenix glutinous rice, soaked and double boiled, and prepared slightly differently than straight stir frying. The rice texture comes from a combination of new and old cooked glutinous rice - very moist yet satisfyingly chewy. And the stir fried nuggets of cheung fun with dried shrimp are addicting. Adding soft scrambled egg makes it even harder to share. The Keung Kee name is not unique. There is a dai pai dong and roasted meat shop with the same name. Make sure you go to Lockhart, not elsewhere, and go into the one the new golden lettered sign!

It's probably because they can -- they've been awarded a Michelin recommendation. To be fair, they have quite a few items that are very good. Their cheung fun has got the right consistency, easy to slurp with the sauces that they came with, yet can still be picked up with a wooden stick. The lo mai fan (fried glutinous rice) is fragrant, fried to perfection, with the seasoning distributed evenly all over. I quite like their sweet dessert soups as well! It's not as common to find the sweet yuba dessert soup anymore, and it's a must get for me. If you like anything with beans, the zha zha is nicely done too. I regularly get a large order to go just to share with my family across the harbour; it's that good. The service is... Hong Kong style. As long as you try hard to not get in the way you'll be fine.

I didn't go for the fried wontons but the fried fish balls were quite good. They were very hot but soft with a slightly crispy exterior. There wasn't a fishy taste to it, so it seemed more fresh. The choy sum was okay, though the broth it sat in was a seafood-based broth which wasn't really my style. Service was decent though like most places in HK, you have to flag down someone and don't expect someone to come to you. This spot was good (and clean) enough for me to not have to visit my former wonton spot, Mak Man Kee. I mean, Chee Kei was good enough where I didn't feel compelled to endure a cramp place with small portions and poor service. I just don't have to deal with that anymore.

(Prices mentioned in this review are in HKD, divided by 7.75 would convert to USD)…read more We have been eager to try the Spring Moon which is a Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant located on the 1st floor (equivalent to 2nd floor in the US) of the Peninsula Hotel, Hong Kong.  We treated 6 members of our extended family to dinner, with us, it was a party of 9.  Hubby did a great job choosing 4 starters, 9 other main courses, and let each person pick a dessert of his/her choice.  Please see the receipt that lists all the items.   The restaurant was set up to resemble those in the 1820s, and has an antique Shanghainese feel.  I appreciated the antique feel, but would prefer better lighting especially for photo taking of the food!  The majority of our table was in a shadow as it was mostly under the balcony, so, that was trickier to take good photos.  Also, the tables were pretty close to each other, except for the wider area in the middle leading to the tea bar.  For some, it is a stunning looking restaurant, depending on whether antique Shanghainese is your cup of tea or not.   Service was very good, but not impeccable.  It was like standard for a good restaurant.  Sometimes we did have to flag down a waiter.  But they were all nice and polite once you got their attention.  We had to remind them several times about the second course of the Peking Duck, which was the Stir-fried Minced Duck Served with Lettuce, that they might have forgotten.  However, we really need to give a special shout-out to our main server, who was friendly and was very familiar with the menu.  He gave my hubby good advice, such as the Green Lobster would be too small for 9 people, and he suggested 2.25 orders of Wok-fried Prawns with Yunnan Ham and (crispy) Bean Curd Sheet.  That was a very good recommendation!  The green veggies were placed through the huge prawns, the whole dish was fresh and tasty with beautiful presentation!  He did not up-sell us, as this choice even came up cheaper than the original Green Lobster!  He also advised on getting 1.5 orders of the Suckling Pig, 1.125 order of the BBQ Hungarian Mangalica Pork with Honey, and 1.125 order of Star Garoupa so that they would be enough to feed all 9 guests! Moments like the captain carving the Peking Duck by our tableside; a team of servers bringing individual servings of King Crab Meat Sweet and Sour Soup to us; and a team bringing individual servings of desserts, were truly impressive!  It was fun that all those bowls came covered and were opened at about the same time. The food was phenomenal!  I have been craving for the crispy skins of the Suckling Pig, Peking Duck, and Crispy Tea Chicken since we left Spring Moon!  Those were so light, thin, and crispy... a true delight to enjoy!  The Pan-seared Star Garoupa(Grouper) was also memorable!  It had a light batter that had a nice crunch, the Grouper meat inside was so fresh, tasty, smooth, and cooked to perfection!  The Steamed Crab Claw with Egg White (although a bit pricey at HK$428 per person) that we got 9 orders of was a must try!  The Crab Claw was so big and plump, the meat fresh and flavorful, and the steamed egg white was smooth and tasty!  This dish really impressed everyone!  The only dish that I did not try was the Garlic Broccoli.  Why?  I have to save some room for dessert!  So, it was either broccoli or Baked Sago Pudding with Chestnut Paste, which is a labor-intensive yummy dessert that not too many restaurants have chefs that could/would make nowadays!  The pudding was so good, it had the right amount of sweetness, and the chestnut paste in the middle was creamy and tasty!   I already wish to have the above dishes again when I go to Hong Kong next time!  Actually, the whole dinner was a delight! The other dishes Crispy Bean Curd Rolls with Carrots and Black Mushrooms, Cold Jellyfish with Dark Vinegar, Signature Fried Rice, Vermicelli with Crab Meat all worth an honorary mention!  And we even got complimentary desserts!  Each person got a bite size piece of mango pudding cake, and an almond cookie, that was so crispy and fluffy and smelled so good! No AC but since it is located right on a pier, there is a bit of a breeze. Plus an abundant amount of ceiling fans to keep cool in the summer months. There are many tanks of seafood for selection right at the entrance of the restaurant. Choose what you want and tell them how you want it prepared. Razor clams - sautéed with black beans and peppers. it was so fresh, no fishy taste and extremely sweet and not sandy. Geoduck - thinly sliced sashimi on a giant bowl of ice. The bowl looked like it weighted 10lbs! Hot pot on the side to blanch the breast meat(the part that is hidden in the shell) and for others who do not eat raw food. It was my first time eating geoduck. My favorite dish of the night! The sashimi is the sliced neck meat (the part that protrudes out). It had a crunchy yet smooth texture with a hint of sweetness. The breast meat when cooked is soft and spongy. Scallop - seamed with vermicelli, scallions and garlic. So good! Mantis shrimp - fried. You gotta get your hands dirty and peel off the shell. I had to get over the fact that it looked so creepy with its' many shrimp like legs and the weird looking head. Under all that shell is a lobster ish texture meat. Taste was a cross between shrimp and lobster. Crab - sautéed with scallions and ginger. It was so meaty and had a lot of orange caviar. I love crab! Fish - steamed and with a soy sauce poured over and topped with scallions. Simple. Fish was about 3-4lbs and meaty. Like everything else, not fishy tasting because it was freshly picked from the tank. Chicken - someone from another table followed the waiter to my table just to check out the chicken. Extremely smooth meat. Cuttlefish- fried, was good but arrived at the end of the meal. Good but not as amazing as everything else. In conclusion, Eat where the locals eat!
