What a true disappointment on so many levels. We had picked Yan Toh Heen for dinner because of all the hype and because with two Michelin stars it had to be amazing. Rather than amazing, it was a true disappointment. First, the quality of the food was not great. The waygu Beef was tough and the least flavorful we ever eaten. Second, none of the dishes were particularly memorable. All were bland and rather tasteless. Third, and most importantly, the service was simply awful. We sat for well over 30 minutes after we finished our main courses without our waiter coming over. When we asked a busboy to send over our waiter or a manager, a manager quickly came over and asked if there was a problem. We told him that we had finished our main courses well over 30 minutes before and that our had waiter had disappeared. He apologized and immediately went away. We assumed to get the waiter or a dessert menu. Instead he reappeared two minutes later with our bill. When we said that we had never been offered coffee or tea or dessert, he became extremely annoyed and told us that we hadn't told him that we wanted coffee. We told him that we didn't want coffee, but that we thought he would at least offer us a look at the dessert menu. He did not, instead he simply stood there with the bill which we paid and left. While it was the end of the evening, there were still other guests in the restaurant. It was clear that the manager felt that offering us coffee, tea and dessert was beneath his role and was clearly annoyed. He should have been annoyed at his waiter, not at us. This was the worst treatment we have ever received at a Michelin starred restaurant. You have been warned!!!

This is a Michelin rated restaurant at the Intercontinental Hotel, which is on the harbor front in Kowloon and has a gorgeous unobstructed view of Hong Kong. We went there for lunch to have dim sum and I enjoyed it immensely. Although I believe that the Michelin rating in Hong Kong is dubious at best (see my review of Bo Innovation), this is a solid restaurant that didn't disappoint. My wife and I arrived early and even though the restaurant wasn't opened yet, the hostess invited us to have a seat on the plush couch outside the doors of the restaurant and brought us some tea while we waited. Inside, the decor was clean, crisp and immaculate. The waiters were polite and earnest despite the language barrier. We sat down and ordered 5 dim sum dishes as well as a noodle dish. The waiter instructed us that he would bring out the 3 dishes first and then follow it up with the final 2 dishes plus noodles, which he split and served for us (so we wouldn't make a mess). I'm not sure what it was, but these gestures resonated for me. I'll admit, I already had fantastic dim sum for a fraction of the price at other restaurants in Hong Kong, but these guys really tried to make it special. The shrimp dumplings were shaped like little goldfish and the iberco ham conpoy were were sitting on a lotus leaf so as to resemble plump cartoonish caterpillars. Knowing that it was our anniversary, they came out with a little chocolate cake at the end of the meal and took a polaroid of us. SinceI haven't seen a polaroid camera in forever I thought it was hilarious. Finally, they gave us some tea in small hand-held cases as parting gifts. All-in-all, this was quite the reception for what I thought was going to be a simple dim sum meal. Although you pay more, it is also a stark contrast to the typical drab and bland experiences at more traditional dim sum places.

Is this restaurant truly worthy of its Michelin stars? There's no doubt that the dishes use fine ingredients, setting is pretty and service is attentive (6 people walked me to the restroom!). But for 5 star dining I expect knock your socks off cuisine. There wasn't anything standout. And a couple of the dishes (grouper, crunchy vegetables) were repeats of the buffet meal we had had at our hotel meeting room that day.

We ate in this superb restaurant twice during our time in Hong Kong. The restaurant is beautiful and calming. The service is extraordinary. And the food, the food is so creative a tasty. The only problem with this restaurant is that it's in Hong Kong and I live in New York!

Very nice dinner with wonderful view. Elegant atmosphere and friendly staff. The basil dragon pearl served with ginger ice cream was fantastic

Okay. It is that time of the week. Fine-dining here we go again. Today I went to Yan Toh Heen inside InterContinental Hotel and that place I am telling you has the most refined Cantonese cuisine with excellent service. Yan Toh Heen was once called Lai Jing Heen before, which served the most elite level of Cantonese Dining. And over the years, this place has only got better and has won several Michelin stars and rightly so. The staff are very informative and have great knowledge of every dish. Worry not. They are not those that come off as trying to up sell you their dishes. The service is sophisticated and never too pushy, approachable and nice. If you allow me, I would recommend you the Superior Dumplings. And honestly those are one of my best dim sum experiences ever. But actually, nothing goes wrong in this place. It is THAT GOOD. If anything, Yan Toh Heen definitely sets a very high benchmark for refined Chinese food. Since mid-Autumn Festival is fast approaching, it is that time of the year where we all struggle to choose the perfect mooncakes for this festival season. If you come to Yan Toh Heen now, there is a very great chance you may get a free sampling. And I did. There were three types of flavor - egg-yolk white lotus seed paste Mooncake, Egg Custard Mooncake (My favourite) and also Chinese ham (Salami) Mooncake. They are certainly not cheap and I was so excited to be able to sample all those free of charge!

A friend of mine recommended this place when I told her we are going to Hong Kong for Chinese New Year. We also happened to stay at Intercontinental HK so this was nice because we just walked over. I made reservation online 3 weeks prior to arrival and someone immediately contacted me to go over the menu and recommended a few things like the Beijing Duck but since there are only two of us we decided not to try because its too much for two people . Maybe we will try next time if we come with more people. We decided to try their lunch menu. Ordered a few dim sum items and chose their special lunch menu. Food is excellent and their service is top notch. They also gave us a very cute chocolate cake for our anniversary and some cute tea packages as a gift. We will come back here next time to try their dinner . I highly recommend this Michelin star restaurant if you want to celebrate or treat yourself to a nice meal . I was very pleased

Best Beijing Duck Full Stop. I used to live in Beijing and tried the 'famous' places, tried the 'local places'-- this is better than anything. This is how duck should taste. Good wine list. Nice departing gift.

We came here for lunch. Located in the intercontinental, formerly the Regent. The restaurant has undergone extensive refurbishment while the hotel will be in the coming 2 years. This is badly needed for an establishment which claims to be one of the top hotels in Hong Kong. The decor of the one Michelin star restaurant is elegant as well as the table setting. The wine list is very extensive covering all parts of the world. They even have a special list with rare vintages of the premier wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux. Unfortunately the wines are extremely expensive, starting from 4 times up to 10 times what you normally would pay at wine merchants. The service of the staff doesn't reflect the class of the restaurant unfortunately. In one word it's mediocre. It's slow, not attentive and the attitude needs a lot of improvement. The food on the other hand is excellent although pricey. For lunch they offer a good variety of dim sum including all the favorites. Presentation is very good. Apart from this they also have a lot of other specialties. My favorites were the braised wagyu beef cheek and the baked Portuguese seafood rice. And don't miss out on the BBQ pork. It would have been a five star experience if the service was better.

From left to right: XO turnip cake, pork and crab roe dumpling, crispy shrimp and avocado dumpling

We met friends for dinner and actually went to the wrong restaurant, for there is another Star of Canton just up the street at I Square too and we went there by accident. This restaurant has an expansive and striking view of the harbor, high ceilings, big glassy chandeliers and is very spacious. There is a stage and so much room that it seems like the appropriate spot to have a banquet or wedding. It is one of those large Chinese restaurants that serves a lot of people and thus the soft goods (carpet, chairs, linens, etc) seem warn and need updating. Although I did not do the ordering and did not pay the bill, in addition to special orders of hairy crabs at an additional cost, we had a set dinner with like 7 courses for around $400HKD (which seemed like a great value, knowing all the delicious food we had). The set included their highlighted dish of Braised Whole Japanese Oma Abalone, in addition to marinated sea cucumbers, shrimp, sticky rice, a great soup with bean curd on top and although small and at the very end, a seasame rice ball that was really spectacular & a party in your mouth. Found in 1998, Star of Canton insists the tradition of the canton dishes with less oil, less salt, no MSG and no artificial colour. I like that and it is a niche in a sea of Chinese restaurant options. We had a good experience and liked the ambiance of the place, so we would reccomend and absolutely go back.
