Sparerib and Chinese sausage claypot rice
    Edward S.

At Hing Kee, the menu shows dozens of combinations of claypot rice configurations. With a group you can make a bigger dent in their offerings. They have two dining rooms that open into the sidewalk and they are pretty efficient. Claypot rice (bo zai fan) is a comforting meal of savory meat and scorched rice. Cooking the rice in a clay pot over a fire provides a smoky aroma and crispy rice crust. The hard part is deciding which ingredients to try on top of the fluffy rice. Chicken with Chinese Sausage: The classic pairing of tender morsels of chicken and sweet and savory Chinese sausage lends their juices to the rice below. Once the lava hot claypot is served, carefully open the lid, add the dark soy sauce, and mix it up. Scrape the bottom to enjoy the crispy rice crust - like paella. White and Yellow Eel: White eel has a firm and flaky texture with a sweet and buttery flavor. The yellow eel is equally rich, sweet, and savory, but with a meatier texture. Salted Fish with Spare Ribs: If you are not afraid of flavor, the salted fish delivers bold umami richness to the dish. Beef with Spare Ribs: The minced beef is soft and tender, a great match for the tasty pork ribs. Spare Ribs with Chinese Sausage: The pork ribs are cooked with a savory black bean sauce. The juicy texture of the pork works well with the sausage.

Decent choice. Claypot rice dinner. Little flimsy tables and stools exposed to the open air. Very rustic. Service is typically gruff and efficient. Good is solid. Claypot rice is as expected, with nice crusty bits providing good texture. Chicken is amazing tender. Veggies were about par, maybe needing some more seasoning. The oyster pancake was ridiculous, fluffy and not super greasy. Add in the sweet sauce and it sings. Throw in ice cold beer poured into little cups and it's a fantastic meal. It's not gourmet but it's a great experience.

I've been craving clay pot rice recently so I had to visit Hing Kee Restaurant for some. This is one restaurant with 4 spots next to each other. An IG reel said they have 5 total spots and 1 is across the street. I can't confirm this but I wouldn't be surprised as they are always busy. Each is brightly lit and considerably quite clean. Tables are aren't crammed next to each other. They are rather spacious. If it gets busy, you do fine with strangers but that's basically any restaurant in Hong Kong. They offer other dishes aside from clay pot rice but they are famous for it and almost every table orders it. The kitchen does it well and offer many variations of the dish. I usually get their Fish Maw with Chicken and Spare Ribs & Chinese Sausage. A must order is their Deep Fried Oyster Cake (basically an oyster omelette). It's left and goes well with your clay pot rice. It does take time to get your order but it's worth the wait. Customer service isn't bad but make sure to bring cash. They are cash only!

Still very good. But pricy now & probably not worth it anymore. There are other claypot places with similar quality @ lower prices.

Came back for another try as I love these clay pot dishes. Came a bit later this time and not right at opening and there was no line. If you can came an hour after opening, you can catch the second wave of tables without a wait. Also after 2:30pm you can order other items which we ordered the sweet and sour pork. The clay pot was equally as delicious as my previous review so I won't write any more about it. 1. Sweet and sour pork: Very good and freshly made. The pork was still crunchy. The sauce was very sweet in combination with strong vinegar flavor giving it the sour. Definitely worth getting. 2. HK milk tea: Delicious here! Strong tea flavor. Not sure why they charge more for cold vs hot all over HK. Maybe for the Ice fee? Overall, a must try here in HK.

In general, claypot rice is the most quintessential, unique dish to be had in Hong Kong. To my dismay, the rendition of claypot rice had here ended up being rather anticlimactic and, overall, the most overhyped dish had for the trip. The upside was that despite the line, they do pass around a colorful, picturesque menu with full English accompaniments while you're in line so that they can get your order in while you wait for a table. We still waited a good bit once seated before getting our dishes though. It's about 85 and up to around 180 HKD for a single rice dish, the selection mind-boggling huge with just about any protein -- largely seafood and entrails -- you can think of. I had the "Minced Beef" (85 HKD) w/ an egg (+6 HKD) as a rather normal, safe option I suppose. Not much to write home about. The famous Youtuber's recommendation of letting the rice sit at the bottom of the claypot was one of folly since the rice was just crunchy and reminiscent of uncooked rice that gets annoyingly stuck in your teeth. For 12 USD, not only was the crunchy rice off-putting, but the protein portion was barely there. As there are other well known spots offering claypot rice, I would highly recommend venturing out to those instead.

Great spot for a traditional clay rice pot made by the chef for over 20 years of making this over and over I was not disappointed and it was a nice surprised to see 2 additional dinning rooms to handle the large crowds. Food brought out hot hot hot and fresh. A must when visiting Hong Kong

Super casual and laid back clay pot restaurant. Staff were super friendly and service was reasonable considering the amount of time it takes to prepare the dish. I ordered the preserved meat pot and the cold tofu with chili oil. The crunchiness of the rice from the clay pot was great but thought the ratio of meat to rice was kind of off. Also maybe it's because I got the preserved meat and thought it was kind of mid nothing to rave about. The cold tofu was delicious though. I love the crisps it came with. Overall, HingKee is a solid restaurant but I think for the price, there definitely are better alternatives.

One of my must go on my global list. Order the hotpot rice two at a time so that the food is hot. The key is to pour the special soy sauce around the edge of the pot and let the soy sauce cooked and create an incredible crust before messing around with it. pour the soy sauce and then cover with the lid and let it cook. Then eat only one pot at a time. If you leave the lid on, the second pot will still be piping hot after you finished the first one. Always dig to the bottom with each scoop of rice to get the crust. All the hot pots are excellent because they use excellent ingredients. The oyster omelette was overfried the first time so I never ordered it again. even though it looked ok the next few times visually. Four people will be the best combo because the tables are set that way. Have fun eating ! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Hing Kee is located right on Temple street, so it's quite convenient to stop by after walking through the night markets. After conducting my research for this trip, we settled on trying the claypot rice at Hing Kee & it did not disappoint. My partner & I ordered individual claypots because they're small portions made for 1 person. They have a wide selection of dishes & claypot rice you could choose from. We settled on my go-to preserved meat claypot rice & a spare ribs claypot rice. Our claypot rice was pretty good! We went late in the evening closer towards closing time, so we didn't have to wait to get seated. They provided quick & easy service, so we were in & out of there like a breeze. I am not sure if they take credit cards or not. Both times that we were there, we paid in cash. Some of their employees speak English as well, so that was nice. Would come back!

This one must place that was recommended to try, they specialize in clay pot, that is when cooked probably the rice will have a nice bottom crispy crust is what makes clay pot rice known for, you can choose many different topping for the clay pot rice. The restaurant has five seating area, the long lines moves. We ordered salted fish with ground pork, which is a chinese classic dish, this dish could have more of salted fish taste, but did have a nice bottom crust, second clay pot rice was with spareribs, seems like the ribs was cooked separately and then put on top, the bottom rice did not have much of a crispy crust. We had much better.

Excellent claypot rice, massive restaurant (four storefronts!), quick service, menus on the walls too. Super casual vibe, service takes a minute as clay pot rice does take some time, quite good. Be sure to let the bottom crisp up, and don't open the top right away as it does need a bit to steam up a tad extra. That said, am not the connoisseur that some are of claypot rice, so will happily say that I am not your person if you want someone cultured on the distinctions between Hing Kee and their competitors.

Saw this featured on Mark Weins travel videos and decided to come and try it. There are about 3 storefronts for this restaurant. It is pretty packed even later in the evening but we were seated immediately. Expect to be sitting next to someone as the tables are pretty packed next to each other. From ordering to getting your meal is maybe 10-15 minutes, so it's pretty fast. I'm not sure if I'm used to the ones back in the US, but the sauce is a little on the light side. I wished that I added more of the soy and fish sauce. Although the burnt rice was really good, I'm not sure if this is the best place to spend your meal options. I must say that the chicken and fish maw was good. Chicken was very moist and tender and fish maw was soft and tender. Spare ribs were decent as well.

We met friends for dinner and actually went to the wrong restaurant, for there is another Star of Canton just up the street at I Square too and we went there by accident. This restaurant has an expansive and striking view of the harbor, high ceilings, big glassy chandeliers and is very spacious. There is a stage and so much room that it seems like the appropriate spot to have a banquet or wedding. It is one of those large Chinese restaurants that serves a lot of people and thus the soft goods (carpet, chairs, linens, etc) seem warn and need updating. Although I did not do the ordering and did not pay the bill, in addition to special orders of hairy crabs at an additional cost, we had a set dinner with like 7 courses for around $400HKD (which seemed like a great value, knowing all the delicious food we had). The set included their highlighted dish of Braised Whole Japanese Oma Abalone, in addition to marinated sea cucumbers, shrimp, sticky rice, a great soup with bean curd on top and although small and at the very end, a seasame rice ball that was really spectacular & a party in your mouth. Found in 1998, Star of Canton insists the tradition of the canton dishes with less oil, less salt, no MSG and no artificial colour. I like that and it is a niche in a sea of Chinese restaurant options. We had a good experience and liked the ambiance of the place, so we would reccomend and absolutely go back.

This flexibility in providing half portion and substitution is something i've rarely experience in a Michelin restaurant.
