First things first--you have to try all the roast meats here. Each one was absolutely delicious and worth sampling. This was my first stop in Hong Kong for roast goose, and while it ended up being my least favorite of the meats, it was still very good--much leaner than I expected, with rich flavor. The true standouts were the roast pork and char siu. The roast pork had an ultra-crispy skin--almost sharp enough to cut your mouth, but in the best possible way--paired with juicy, flavorful meat underneath. The char siu struck a perfect sweet-and-savory balance, with a beautiful ratio of fat to meat that made each bite melt in your mouth. This is probably the best Char Siu I have ever eaten in my life. Sat down around 2:30, for a small table to ourselves relatively quickly. I noticed other parties had to get seated with others, but that seems to be the norm out here for these small shops to quickly get customers in and out. It's a tiny restaurant, popular, so sharing a table is common. The menu is in Chinese, no English version. The server told me No English, I'll bring you goose and rice. I told her to give me just a few minutes, and I'd order in Chinese. Joy Hing is known for their Char siu, so I ordered that with rice, vegetable and soup. Honestly, the Char siu was no better or worse than any I've had in Kowloon. It was tasty, so no complaints, but I can get equally good Sui Mei at Temple market or right around the corner from the Mira hotel without the train ride. It was probably about 2 lbs of meat just for me to eat. It was way too much but it was delicious! I ended up snacking on it over the next 4 days and still couldn't finish it all. The pork was very similar to how it's made in San Francisco where I'm from. I was hoping it would be a bit different. Arrived in Hong Kong in the evening yesterday, exhausted from the 14 hour flight. We checked in our hotel and immediately went out for our first meal. Located about four blocks away was Joy Hing. This particular place is famous for their Roasted Meats. Since I have never tried roasted goose before, that's what we ordered. Roasted Goose: first thing people asked me is how it compares to duck. Just based on the duck I've had in the Bay Area, Roasted Goose is meatier, less salty based on the goose at Joy Hing. It was delicious after a the long haul and a good first meal. With it we received bok choy with oyster sauce, a bowl of rice, and a couple dipping sauces. Service was very friendly. The total price with drinks was about $30 US dollars. Stumbled upon this truly hole-in-the-wall spot randomly on a walk. I was lured in by the Michelin recommended badges on the outside. It's the epitome of a no frills dining experience, with dingy and cramped seating inside, the hustle and bustle of the staff yelling orders, and the sound of a jackhammer outside too. You may also have to share a table with a stranger. However, I was here to taste the roasted goose, and it did not disappoint. I got a roast goose and BBQ pork on rice for $65, which is pretty affordable by HK standards. The roast goose was juicy and tender, with crispy skin. The BBQ pork was so-so, more on the lean side whereas I prefer fattier BBQ pork. Eating a giant container of bbq pork out of a take-out container in an alley next to Joy Hing is my favorite food memory of 2018. I want to go back to Hong Kong just to eat that pork again...and this is coming from someone who usually eats vegetarian! This place does not cater to tourists - which is a good thing - and you won't find an English menu/speaker. You also won't be able to use a card, cash only. There is a small area for eating, but most seem to get the food to go (which is what we did). The wait isn't long, unlike the place that's been on TV too much down the street. In the end, the only thing that really matters is the food, and the pork we had there could only be described as "meat candy" (and I mean that in the best possible way). You want to get the char siu bbq pork (叉燒). This is NOT the BBQ pork you've had at your local Chinese restaurant in the States, this is meat cook to absolute perfection. If you are in Hong Kong, go. One of the greatest spots in Wanchai and certainly one of the most sought after Cantonese BBQ joints in all of Hong Kong is Joy Hing (再興). After having been here so many times as both a visitor and a resident, I find myself missing the food and try to make it here every time I'm back. Yet somehow it's never enough, hence I'm coming back and hungry for more. Joy Hing has remained in its natural state for decades and has amassed a reputation for churning out some of the best bbq meats (燒味) in the city. The seating area is so tight and limited that people are often waiting outside, just to squeeze in with strangers as people devour various cuts of meat over rice / noodle. There is almost no down time as the place is busy for all hours. Hence, I put in a big order and aim for takeaway like a gentleman. A hungry, glutinous, carnivorous gentleman. I will often tell people that the one thing that HK does better than anywhere else is roasted goose (燒鵝). Fear not, this premium meat has no hints of gamey flavor, but is presented as a a wondrous slab o a crispy, sometimes fatty skin that melts in one's mouth when consumed properly. This kind of amazingness is why people come here in the first place. Goose is in a league of its own here and rivals some of the best goose-y themed restaurants throughout the island. Don't get me wrong, everything else is wonderful as well. Their signature char siu bbq pork (叉燒) is so delicious that it should be ordered every time. Whether it sits alone in a box with other delectable pieces or is laid across a plate of steaming white rice, it is a must-eat. Combine this with an order of roasted duck (燒鴨) and basque in their house sauce by squirting copious amounts of it all through the meat and rice. It will be glorious. The service is like so many other busy HK famous spots: direct and to the point. Know your order and speaking Cantonese (or having someone else do it for you) will undoubtedly help. English is limited, but they have a ton of staff running around that can probably figure it out. For a divey spot, they sure are pricey ($70HKD AD) and remember to bring only cash. read more

I was so excited to try here with all the positive reviews and 4+ star rating for their goose. We had been to Yat Lok last week and the goose was phenomenal! So pretty high bar set for my standards. Although we did not dine in, we ordered half goose ($200) to go and some char Siu for dinner at home. When I opened the box, the goose did not look fresh and I believe they gave me duck too as the skin color was different. We still ate it but it just tasted ordinary and lacked any real flavor (more grease and fat flavor if anything). Maybe the experience would have been better for dine in, but I was left disappointed with the goose (and duck) and make sure to check on the spot they are giving you what you ordered, so you don't overpay for something you never ordered ! read more

A really cool spot to feel what the true Hong Kong working class experience is. I went by myself on my last day in Hong Kong and got ushered to a small little table that sat 3 other patrons. You get a small stool and about 4 inches of space to either your left and your right. There is a small tray with community sauces to go with your meal. I ordered the combination which was steamed chicken, cha sui, and roasted duck. All had the perfect about of skin + meat. The rice was generous and piping hot! My family speaks Cantonese, unfortunately I don't, but I was able to use previous yelp posts and point out what I wanted. Food came in less than 5 minutes. I ate it in an equal of 5 minutes. It cost me $47 HKD which is about $6.00 USD. Not bad! I gave it 4 stars because my meat could have been a lot warmer to match the temp of rice but still good. When I think of Hong Kong, Joy Hing always comes to mind. I'm always excited for it whenever I'm in the Wanchai area. If you happen to stay at the iClub Wanchai as a visitor, Joy Hing is less than a 5 minute walk. There usually isn't a wait since people go in and out so quickly. The workers are always very nice and loudly welcoming, directing you to whatever open seats are available and then asking you what you want right then and there. If you don't know or they assume you don't speak Canto, they might just recommend something in English for you to understand. Be flexible with the seating, as it can get tight or they'll ask you to move your seat in so they can fit one more person. Efficiency at its finest. There's hot tea at each table along with cups, so feel free to help yourself to that. Otherwise, they do ask if you want anything to drink, such as soups, milk tea, or lemon tea. They may speak very abruptly, but they're actually very friendly. Lots of shouting among the workers to put in orders across the room. The atmosphere always makes me smile. We usually each get a 3 combo rice (with roasted duck, roasted pork, and cha siu) and a veggie dish (they almost always have the option of choy sum and maybe something else). There are sauces on the table, so help yourself to that as well. $49 (HKD) for the combo meat & rice, $20 for the veggies (a generous portion), and $8 for a cup of iced lemon tea. For less than $18 USD, we get a delicious meal for two. Ugh, I cannot express just how much I love this place. I could go again and again every time I return to Hong Kong. read more

Four days into a HK trip and I was in need of some roast meat, don't ask me why I waited so long to do so. I had plenty of restaurants bookmarked ahead of time, but Joy Hing was nearby and it was the perfect timing for some grub as I had been walking for hours. Walking in had me a tad skeptical as there was not many inside compared to the Yelp photos where people are lined up outside for lunch time. It did smell delectable, so I was game either way to get down with some roast meat. Friendly staff that seated us in an older diner style setting, and as always do not expect an opulent indoor setting in many hole in the wall HK joints. They do have English menus, which we did not ask for, but I sort of stand out, hah. I was already good to go before walking in, so it was a quick order for me. Settled on roast duck, roast pork, and crispy pork platter over rice. My friend ordered the typical American sweet and sour pork. Again, with many HK restaurants, expect quick service without dropping to much money (Bring cash). The food was easily a 5/5, and could easily eat this three times a day, although I do not think my digestive system would approve. If I had to pick a favorite out of the dish, easily could choose the crispy pork, something about the succulent pork followed by a crispy seasons outer skin is the perfect match. Not bad, but I didn't find it anything too amazing. The portions seemed a little small and the meats were a little dry, it seemed like my party got possibly the last meats of a batch or something. Our party got Soy Chicken (3/5) which wasn't anything special and the BBQ Pork Charsiu (4/5) which was decent. Like I mentioned, they weren't bad, but the meat portions seemed small compared to the rice portions. Looking at the pictures here, it seems like some parties got more meat and other parties got less, with my party ending up with less. This was one of the most amazing places for roasted meats! One of the best things to try here is their char siu. The char siu's fat just melts in your mouth which allows for the meat to coat your palate. It also has a lot of flavor which I really like. They also have a roast pig. The skin is crispy and salty. There is also a good proportion of meat and fat that comes along with the skin. Finally, I tried the goose with pork. This was also good but the pork had more meat which made it a little bit worse than just ordering the separate dish. The goose had a lot of juice and was good as well. As one of the "To-Eat" types of restaurants in Hong Kong, we knew we had to try to find a Roasted Meat restaurant near our hotel. Luckily, we found one that was still open and dropped in. The place was small so be prepared to share tables with other strangers, something quite common in Hong Kong due to small land space vs. population. We decided to order a plethora of dishes and requested for a 'combination' of roasted meats(BBQ pork, Roast Duck, Soy Sauce Chicken, and Roasted Pork). I stayed in Wan Chai two of my trips to HK and this place is the best value on the island. Char Shu to go or quickly eaten inside (in true HK fashion it is a tad more expensive to eat there, rather than take away) is amazing and inexpensive. Service is quick, but not overly curt. Joy Hing is what siu mei dreams are made of. It is no fuss, fast, loud and local Hong Kong food. If you see locals swarm around a place, then you know it must be good. There is always a queue, but it moves pretty quickly. We were squished in to an already busking restaurant to a tiny child like table and proceeded to get cozy with our fellow dining guests. Service is quick and your order is barked across the room to the men hacking away at slabs of meat and within seconds you dish is banged down in front of you. It's certainly not something I'm use to, but it's effective and efficient and good for hungry customers. Joy Hing is very proud of its Michelin guide recommendation which some people confuse at a Michelin rating. Either way, it's simple, no frills approach continuously offers customers char siu fun (BBQ roast pork rice) $30HKD or rice with three treasures (chicken, duck and BBQ pork). I ordered the 3 meats (duck, chicken, BBQ pork) with rice to go. Disappointed with the meal. While it was very cheap and the portion size was good, the meats were a let down. Roast duck was dry. BBQ pork was also dry and some pieces had a funny taste. The only thing not dry was the chicken. For all the hype of being Michelin recommended, the meal was a total let down. The first time I came I wasn't overly impressed and was trying to figure out what all the hype was about. The first time I came, I had roast pork over rice and they added their sauce on top. I felt it was salty and quite fatty and generally I don't prefer having sauce on top of my roasted meats so it just didn't do much for me. I was in the area for a doctor's appointment so I decided to try again. As I was browsing pictures beforehand, I was already salivating and super excited. This time I ordered the Roast Goose and BBQ Pork over rice ($57), and made sure to ask for no sauce. The worker there made sure to let me know that if I chose duck instead of goose it would only be $27, but I had already decided beforehand I wanted to try the goose. It was great that he warned everybody ordering the goose that they could get the combo with the duck for $27 (I think non-combos also cost the same at $27). I also got a soup, too. Soup: I thought it tasted fine. Getting soup from Chinese restaurants always gives me that homemade nostalgic feeling. I would get the soup again. Goose: I thought the goose tasted fine. To me, goose tastes like a meatier version of duck, but was fine for me. Personally may not be worth the $30 to change from duck to meat since I find them similar. For others apparently they know better than me and can taste more of a difference, so unless I feel like having a change of pace, I am fine with sticking with duck. BBQ Pork: This is where the winner was. The pork was soooo juicy and very good flavor and level of sweetness. The edges were a bit charred, but in a good way that gave the BBQ Pork more flavor. The meat was a little fatty but I think it may have been needed so that the pork would be juicier. I feel like I still have moments when I crave for that BBQ Pork. This is a big deal, because generally if I have the option at a roast meat place, I usually pick roast pork, but not in this case.
