Finally got to try the Michelin rated location in HK. Very consistent with other locations, but I have to say that I think the food was a bit better in the US locations. In the US, the food was served hotter and actually had more flavor. The XLB and the wontons were very consistent to the other locations. Good flavor. I did enjoy the egg custard desert buns on the menu here, and the menu is a bit larger. There was also no wait, but we did go at an odd peak time (4pm). Glad that I tried out this location, and look forward to many more meals at DTF.
First time here and loved it! The veggie dumplings were so yummy! The rice was perfect but my absolute favorite was the plain noodle soup. I wish they had a shrimp wanton soup available but this was another great option. Can't wait to try their other locations!
boasted as a michelin rated chinese cuisine, surely it doesn't disappoint. from their infamous shao lung bao, to other small bites, it does maintain the authentic taste.
Going to Hong Kong I had to make a trip to Din Tai Fung to try their famous soup dumplings. Please be aware that they stop seating you at 9:15PM/21:15 (45 mins prior to closing). We arrived around 8 PM/20:00 and were seated right away. Our food came out pretty quickly. The soup dumplings were so good! We loved both the pork and chicken soup dumplings equally! Very casual ambiance, but very pretty and bright interiors. The restaurant is very clean as well!
Only 4 stars because the place is hard to find. Excellent food and service. Finally hot and sour soup and fried rice like home.
I was in Hong Kong and in the mood for dim sum and was close to this location, so I went. truth be told, I have been to this same restaurant in Seattle, Washington USA so I figured it would be the same and it was. Oh yes, I am sure there are more authentic Chinese Dim sum places to go, but I am an American visiting and was on a tight schedule, so I could not be more adventurous. I had the steamed pork and shrimp dishes and they were as good as they are in Seattle :)
I think we were actually introduced to soup dumplings hear a number of years ago... You can imagine how excited we were to actually go to this place while in China! They've been on tMichelin guide for the area for almost a decade and it's easy to see why! I asked located on the third or fourth level of a mall in downtown Hong Kong. It took a little bit of searching to actually find it, but once we did, all was well! You know you're here when you see the giant dumpling headed creature statue As well as a takeout window. They do both take out and dine in, and per usual doing well. We had just checked into our hotel and the troops were getting hungry, so we ended up grabbing a number of different soup dumplings, some Dan Dan noodles, some custard buns and some sesame balls. As it's in Hong Kong, it's like going out in the US so you're bill is gonna be higher than many other places, but this spot is worth it! The dumplings were excellent, the buns legendary and the noodles worthy of their own review! If you're around, go here - you deserve it!
#TakeMeBackTuesday - Remembering Hong Kong... After a very delightful afternoon along Victoria Harbour, we found ourselves near the Silvercord shopping center that we decided to have Din Tai Fung for dinner. This was the franchise's first branch in Hong Kong and has been handed out a one-star Michelin rating in the past. Steamed Pork Dumpling (Xiao Long Bao) - This was arguably the reason why everyone was here. It is their signature item and the only one that was highlighted on the menu. Every table has a laminated guide on how to eat this like a pro - in three languages with pictures included! Wrapped in a thin and translucent skin, the pork was delicious and the broth was flavorful. Although the recommendation is to eat it with the ginger and vinegar sauce, my first would always be the "naked" version so I could fully grasp the flavor of the XLB. Steamed Shrimp and Pork Shao-Mai - This wasn't the traditional pork and shrimp dumpling, but this has been the most appetizing that I have ever seen. Looking as gorgeous as a white-plumed sea anemone, this shao-mai has the meat at the bottom of the wrapper and topped with a single piece of shrimp. Squeezed and pleated to make the shrimp stand out, the middle was the perfect spot to pick this up with a chopstick. The shrimp was fresh and the pork mixture was tasty. The skin felt a tad heavy though. Spicy Shrimp and Pork Wonton - It's all about the sauce, which was more flavorsome than spicy. The elements of sweetness, tanginess, and saltiness combined with the chili sauce and a few more ingredients then toss in some green onions for good measure... Yum! The wonton was wonderful and the thickness of the skin was enough to prevent the filling from getting soaked by the sauce. Then again, the sauce kicks it up to the next level. Spicy Vegetable and Pork Wonton - Although it had the same sauce, we should have just doubled down on the Shrimp and Pork Wonton. The vegetable-to-pork ratio on this wonton was probably 99:1. Fried Rice with Deep-fried Pork Chop - I thought we couldn't go wrong here with "fried" and "deep-fried" on the same line. The pork chop was just average while the rice was very underwhelming with only green onions and eggs in it. Where are my grease and MSG when I need them? DTF and XLB are two acronyms that go together. We've had them on both eastern and western hemispheres and they were consistently good on both sides of the Prime Meridian. Maybe someday we can get to try the main branch in Taiwan. They have gone a long way from something that started as cooking oil retail business in 1958...
Din Tai Fung is situated at 143 Nathan Street in Kowloon, Hong Kong. This is without any doubt one of my favourite dumpling restaurant in Hong Kong. I have heard that HK has 2 pastime. Food and talking about food. This is indeed so true. The xiao long bao is beautifully presented in wooden steam box of 6. Do not underestimate the heat inside the dumplings. The skin has a velvety texture, firm but so delicate, and hold all the yummy juice inside. Such an abundance of juice, it would almost qualify for soup inside the dumplings. Every bite would arouse a tinkling sensation of every single taste buds in your mouth. Probably no words powerful enough to explain, that one has to try to get it.
Came for lunch...had veg mushroom dumpling (not bad) hubby had pork dumpling. We had veg fried rice with spring onion....simple but tasty. Had taro dumpling...mildly sweet, starchy and mushy but ok And red bean paste dumpling - mushy sweet rajma/kidney beans....I did not like it. Casual atmosphere, no reservations. Fairly quick and polite service. Clean washrooms and located in Silvercord mall on 3rd floor.
Always a great meal at Din Tai Fung. Noticed that this HK menu has more variety than I previously tried in Shanghai or Singapore. This may be to cater to Cantonese tastes. The restaurant itself is bright and spacious on the third floor of Silvercord. Started w Shanghai specialty, braised wheat gluten and tofu puffs. This was great and clearly made from fresh, never frozen wheat gluten that is hard to get outside of China or HK. My local T and T has only the frozen type resulting in a much chewier plate. This version was wonderful and not overly sauced. Heaven! Next spinach shrimp dumpling Taiwanese style or Shanghai style. Contains broth so you have to be careful eating. The trick is to eat as soon as it comes to the table to avoid the wrapper becoming tough. Pierce the wrapper in a spoon and slurp up the broth. Then Eat the dumpling. I like mine w soy sauce. As you can see from the photos they were so good I couldn't snap before they were eaten. Pork dumplings similarly delicious. More veg choices in menu now - yay! Spinach greens w garlic has tons of garlic and bright green - super tasty. Fried rice veg w mushrooms - note the photo w so much veg present! North American Chinese restaurants pls note! All dumplings made to order. Never sitting around. Never a day old or even a few minutes old. It is all timed methodically. And see how many hands make the dumplings. 7 at this restaurant by my count on a Monday.
WOW. Now I finally understand what all the hype is about! The dumplings here are AMAZING. Never being able to try the DTF in the US, I was so excited to try this restaurant here. It exceeded my expectations...now whenever I eat dumplings it'll never be the same. *Cries* I came with a friend on a Monday for early dinner and there was literally no wait at all. I ordered the xiao long bao and my friend ordered the vegetarian dumplings. Xiao long bao is a steamed little dumpling with soup and meat filling, and is pretty famous at DTF. The food came out pretty quickly, like in about 10-15 minutes. The dumplings looked so pretty and you could see the skill in the many folds in each one! The xiao long bao was AMAZING. Hot, full of soup, with the little filling inside bursting with flavor. The dumpling skin wasn't too chewy or thick, and the whole dish overall was just so addicting and good. I also got to try one of the veggie dumplings and it was delicious as well! I will never see dumplings the same again. The hype about this place is legit. Definitely stop by if you can and come hungry, they have a plethora of yummy options that will make your tastebuds so happy!!
If you're jet lagged, tired, and don't speak the language but still want to find a quick (but relatively authentic/local) place for dinner near your hotel in TST then this is the perfect place! Note: it's inside a mall, on the 3rd floor. We were able to walk in and easily get a table around 6pm. The menu is in both languages with pictures. Makes it way easy to order. They'll bring tea for you. We decided on 3 items to share: Steamed Pork Dumplings - SO good. Best thing we tried! They give you a little guide on the "proper" way to eat the dumplings (down to mixing soy sauce & vinegar in your bowl w/ pieces of ginger), made us chuckle a little - and we gave it a good try but didn't master the correct technique. But anyway, totally recommend this. Shrimp & Pork Wonton Soup - good. The broth was very light & perfect after our 16 hour flight. The wontons tho were awesome. Mushroom fried rice - loved it! Lots of veggies, light rice, didn't feel heavy. Kinda hard to eat with chop sticks but we tried :) Overall, yes, this is a chain, but it's visitor-friendly, the waitstaff was efficient but really nice, the ordering experience wasn't super stressful, and the food was delish & well-priced.
Wild recommendations encouraged us to visit today. Located inside of a shopping mall on the fourth floor, at 8pm it was loaded with mainly Asians consumers. No reservations taken but no waiting for us. We were seated immediately. A menu was provided that described about fifty choices in Chinese and English. I lack a taste for the exotic so the six items we selected had vegetables, chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp. We are less adventurous than some and, without guidance, stuck to ingredients of some familiarity. Rather than bringing all at once, there was a measured pace for delivery to our table. As dim sum lovers, we dug in. The experience of robust flavors and the environment combined to give us a genuine Hong Kong experience. Our total bill was less than $100US. read more

Dang this was a big letdown. I've heard so many good things about Din Tai Fung so I was truly excited when I saw it at the mall. Getting to try it in Hong Kong, the home of Dimsum, I thought this was going to be a 10/10. Yeah, not quite. The wrapping of each dishes were thicker than most places, so that was already offputting. That plus the taste of the fillings inside the xiao long baos, it's like you eat one and you already feel fed up and over it. And then there was no Har Gow in the menu, one of the most essential in a dimsum restaurant... Price was also much more expensive than your typical dimsum places in Hong Kong, and then some outrageous charges like $12 for tea per person, when it's literally one teapot at a table... and adding an additional 10% if you want to take the dishes to go if you don't finish... Yeah, this is a hard no. The only reason why I'm even giving it a two star rating is because customer service was spectacular and the tea was pretty tasty. read more

I AM Such a DTF fangirl!!! So much so that I always try to hit up one of their branches during my travels! (Seoul/Cali/HK and soon the mothership in Taipei!) For me, DTF has always been consistently good from their XLB, Pork Chop fried rice, the awesomely good bean curd cold salad to their amazing hot & sour soup (they managed to make it just right for my taste buds... not too spicy, not overpoweringly sour... just perfect!). Their service & waitstaff is always on-point (with a minor mishap at the Glendale branch but all good) - they have a pretty good system! I love that the HK branch has the "truffle XLB"... I have yet to see on the west coast menu... maybe it's seasonal? Wish everything was in HKD! Great value! LOL ;) Definitely recommend bookmarking this branch - it's spacious and afterwards - go shopping! read more

We ordered the cucumbers, pork dumplings (xaio long bao), and Dan Dan noodles. All were good and solid and I'd definitely recommend ordering those. We arrived around 6:00pm on a Wednesday night and there wasn't any wait. We got our food super quickly too! I preferred the pan fried dumplings at Cheung Hing Kee, but these were definitely good too! read more
On Sunday, this joint opens at 11:30 but you will find hungry patrons starting to queue at 11:00am and the mall will already be bustling with people eating at the downstairs food court or even exercising. Meals are always better when shared with friends but when traveling for work I often have to adventure on my own. The DTF experience of waiting in line is not too bad if you are alone as long as you go early. Otherwise I could see myself feeling lonely with no one to talk to and there is only so much phone time to be had before your battery dies. So all that to say, show up early, even before it opens. Be first in line and get your menus to plan out what you want. I splurged on the truffle xlbs and weekend special that had traditional mini xlbs so I could try a couple things. Here is where an extra friend or 2 comes in handy so you can order a variety! Everything was tasty and I would go back, it definitely was more casual than I thought it would be read more
The first 2 times I went to Din Tai Fung, each time I drove one hour from hotel to get to the restaurant. Then put my name on waitlist for a table, and waited another hour to be seated. (They do not take reservations) I did this twice willingly. The place is so popular. So when I was in Hong Kong, I made a point to dine at Din Tai Fung for our first dinner. We arrived early for dinner, about 5:45pm. No lines, plenty of tables. I noticed their general décor is much fancier than the counterparts in Southern Cal. We had a personal waitress who kept our tea cups full and served all our dishes to the table. We were not used to so much attention. In fact, my kids were uncomfortable with it and wouldn't engage in regular conversations. DTF uses thin wrappers for their dumplings. I compared with Maxim Restaurant from earlier of that same day. It is just a perfect dumpling with best taste and balance of meat, juice, and wrapper. Ahh, but they can even outdo themselves with new item, Crab Egg with Pork Dumpling. The Crab Eggs make a wonderful compliment. In California the female Dungeness crabs which have eggs are required to release back to sustain as next generation. So maybe this dish will not appear in Cali. We also love their famous Taro Dumpling. No other place offers this, I ask everywhere we go. We did a lot of walking from getting lost in finding this place. Dinner was expensive, plus we had time crunch for a pre-booked night cruise afterwards, so I was a bit stressed out. But it was worth the visit/dinning. read more
I didn't really expect much coming here since I was thinking that it might be overhyped, but it actually surprised me. Thank god I didn't have to rinsed my bowls and chopsticks here. Very cleaned and service was fast. I went here in the morning right when it opened and my mom and I were seated right away. We enjoyed our breakfast here so much we came back for dinner the same day. We ordered the steamed pork soup dumplings, shrimp fried rice, tossed cucumber w/ chili and garlic, shredded beancurd w/ seaweed & bean sprout, double- boiled mixed mushroom soup, braised beef noodle soup, and shrimp wonton soup. The flavor of the pork soup dumplings was amazing! The skin is not too thick and holds the fillings very well and super flavorful. What surprised me the most was the fried rice. It was actually seasoned well and the shrimps were soft and with perfect amount of eggs mixed together. The cucumber was also really delicious. It's crunchy, a bit spicy and tangy. We ordered the pork dumplings, the fried rice and cucumber for dinner again since we loved it so much. The beancurd is a light appetizer with crunchy & soft textures. The mixed mushroom soup is also a good choice if you wanted something soupy. The braised beef noodle soup was okay, nothing too special. Overall my mom and I really like this place. Would try it again in a different countries to see if the flavors are the same across the board. read more

This place never disappoints me. We are a Din Tai Fun lovers and have tried their locations all over the world like Korea, Japan, Singapore, ShangHai, Taipei, and of course some of their locations in US. But I have to say this is still my favorite. First of all, even though there are always a lot of people but since the place is so big, the wait is less than 20 mins. Unless US locations , usually the wait is over an hour . We love their taro dumplings for dessert. We come here every time we visit Hong Kong ! read more

My Japanese boss who loves to eat Korean food or Japanese food in Hong Kong asked me what I would like to have for dinner. Duh! Of course Chinese food!! And Yelp led me to Din Tai Fung that my boss knew as there are many branches in Japan. Super spacious, picture menu's in English and the staff was so attentive. Ordered the dumplings and a few other items... everything was just so satisfying. If in Hong Kong you gotta go. No stress for non-Chinese speakers. https://tokyobelly.blogspot.jp/2018/03/hong-kong-legend-of-din-tai-fung-yup-i.html read more
In any country at any time zone this is a delicious and causal way to eat dumplings. Now I'm not the bragging kinda guy, but I have been to my share of DTF round the globe. And one thing in common with all locations is that there is usually a wait. Be forewarned, arrive early or be prepared to wait for a lil bit. This location is at a mall, not unlike most of the DTFs I've visited. Give yourself time to navigate the streets if you're not familiar with the terrain. Back to the food. We tried a variety of tasty bites today, including soup dumplings with pork, soup dumplings with chicken, shrimp and veggies, sticky rice with pork and a couple of veggie steamed buns and some fried rice with mushrooms on the side. There is certainly enough non meat or fish items to enjoy here if you have dietary restrictions. That's a good thing! The service is ridiculously prompt. There's someone at your table as soon as you pick your head up. What's better is that once the order is placed the food is practically at your table a minute later. It's like sci-fi. You just need to imagine a dumpling and POOF, it appears before you! Aight, to sum up, get here early! We were here at 11:30AM and we're seated immediately. When we left the wait was about 40 minutes and that's on a Wednesday! If you're reading this recommendation and you're saying to yourself "I'm not going to be in Hong Kong anytime soon", my first response would be "why are you reading reviews for best dumplings in Hong Kong?" and my next response would be - Go to the DTF homepage and look up all the locations. There might not be one around the corner from you, but there seems to be one in every major city and probably one opening up near you! Eat, enjoy and come back! read more

Din Tai Fung is a magical place... everything we ate was delicious and unique in flavor. The food was seasoned perfectly, not too strong and it was delightful. Believe the hype. Prices are very reasonable too. We ordered the Xiao Long Bao in both pork and chicken (you really can't go wrong), vegetable pork potstickers, pan fried dumplings, Chinese gai lan, fried bean curd with fungus, bean curd mixed vegetable salad, green beans with pork, pork black bean noodles and red bean steamed buns for dessert. Each of my family members had their favorite, but the truth was everything was not just good, but great. We love DTF! read more
