This restaurant is part of Maxims Group, which is basically a guarantee for above average standards. The Shanghainese dishes served here are authentic and colorful in diversity. Some of my favorites are the sweet and sour fried fish, braised lion's head, spicy beef in pungent sauce, and the fried prawns coated in salted egg yolk. From presentation to taste, the sweet and sour fried fish is thoughtfully prepared. The fish is succulent and fried in a batter that remains crispy in the sauce. The sweet and sour sauce is well balanced and really compliments the fish. I like the lion's head here because it's flavorful and not as fatty compared to other ones. There's just the right amount of fat in the meatball to create a very soft and tender texture while not making it overly greasy. The sauce that it's braised is also delicious and hearty. The spicy beef in pungent sauce is a family favorite. It's served boiling hot and extremely spicy! It comes with a ton of beef and Mung bean sheets. All the flavors are strong but delicious and warming in the winter. I have to say that the fried prawns in salted egg yolk are also my favorite. The size of the prawns here are impressive and they're cooked to perfection. They also don't skimp on the salted egg yolk. In our recent visit, we also tried the scallops with mushrooms and vegetables served in a truffle sauce. I was a little skeptical about the truffle sauce in a Chinese dish at first but it was delicious! I was mind blown by the different textures of the mushrooms, vegetables and scallops. The truffle sauce was really toned down. It complimented the scallops without overpowering the flavors. Overall, fantastic food and excellent service. I highly recommend Shanghai Jade to anyone looking for some fancy Shanghainese food!

There was enough soup for four, which magically disappeared from our table for two. We cleaned every plate, and not because the servings were anything short of generous. For one, I was happy they noticed us struggling while making a mess trying to shell the shrimp, bringing us a knife and fork (and extra wet-wipes). Interesting to me, this was the first time we each had two sets of chopsticks. Thankfully, the internet quickly taught us that one set was for serving ourselves from the community plates, and the other for eating. Don't use the eating pair for serving or the serving pair for eating -- it is bad form, especially with COVID being so huge here. Note: they are happy to bring serving spoons, forks and knives if you ask (or appear hopeless). My other mistake, in addition to the shrimp peeling fiasco, was not tipping.
