As we wandered through the mall, we noticed it housed a variety of restaurants and eateries. That's when we discovered Paradise Dynasty, a restaurant on the 2nd floor (3rd floor by U.S. standards) specializing in Shanghainese cuisine. Intrigued by all the pictures on their display, we returned that evening with our daughter, and it was love at first bite. We ended up dining there a total of four times in the nine days thereafter! The restaurant was clean, comfortable, and filled with small tables that created a cozy atmosphere. Despite the crowds, we never had to wait for a table. The staff were consistently welcoming and courteous, making each visit pleasant and hassle-free. Menus were available both via QR code and in physical form, in both Chinese and English, complete with photos of every dish, making ordering incredibly easy. One of the standout dishes was their Xiao Long Bao, soup dumplings with delicate wrappers and flavorful fillings. We highly recommend the Specialty Dynasty Xiao Long Bao, which includes eight different flavors for a fun and tasty experience. Other favorites included the La Mian with Prawn and Pork Wonton in Signature Pork Bone Soup (Wontons with Noodle Soup), a comforting bowl featuring four plump wontons and a generous serving of noodles, perfect for sharing. We also never skipped dessert: a warm bowl of ginger soup with three glutinous rice balls filled with fragrant black sesame paste. Though we were usually full, we always found room to share one glutinous rice ball each, just enough to satisfy our sweet tooth. With its convenient location, reasonable prices, varied menu, consistent quality, and great service, Paradise Dynasty quickly became our go-to restaurant in Hong Kong. We are already looking forward to our next visit!

One for each of the things that do it for me: Service, ambience, food, price and "Will I come back?" Edit: Was Shanghai Hairy Crab Special! So tried the Crab Roe Xiao Long Bao, Shanghai Rice Noodles with Crab Roe, Glutinous Balls with Crab Roe in a light broth. All fantastic. All worth the price. I had: Double boiled chicken soup with lamian. Soup is incredible, rich but not overpowering. Savoury and subtle. This is my favourite. Paired with a bowl of plain lamian, pour the soup over the noodles and swoon. Fried pork rib (actually a pork chop) with lamian. The noodles come in a bowl of savoury clear broth. This is so good by itself. The pork rib is deep fried and over cooked, so, meh. Xiao long bao (XLB). Each order comes in a bamboo steamer. The 4 little dumplings are perfect, the skin is delicate encapsulating a spoonful of tasty gravy and minced pork. Be careful picking each dumpling up! You don't want to accidentally break it, spilling and wasting all the juicy goodness. You also want to let it cool a bit first before biting into it. Pan fried pao. Three pork paos are lightly pan fried, giving the bottom of each pao a crispy crunchy base. So moreish! Pork jelly. Delicately pulled pork is set in a jelly and cut into cubes, served chilled. I dip each cube in a light vinegar before eating, so refreshing and light! Yum. Gyoza. Really juicy gyoza. Nuff said. Steamed pao. I tried the vegetarian version. Fluffy and light with some chopped vegetables wrapped inside. I should have just ordered the pork pao. The service staff were attentive and kept the hot tea refilled. I like that! The price of noodles are about HK$60 to $100. XLB and other baos are about HK$40 to $50. I may have found a new XLB favourite. Might even be better than Din Tai Fung. Will need to compare!

The menu had a LOT of items, each numbered and with short descriptions in English. Everything was, as you'd expect, served family style. We had the hot and sour soup, some veggie dumplings, shredded beef with vegetables, shrimp in chili sauce, all served with tea. Each was fantastic! Seriously. Not good. Not great. Fantastic! There was enough soup for four, which magically disappeared from our table for two. We cleaned every plate, and not because the servings were anything short of generous. The service was also great, while a bit hovering as they seemed worried about how we might handle everything. For one, I was happy they noticed us struggling while making a mess trying to shell the shrimp, bringing us a knife and fork (and extra wet-wipes). Interesting to me, this was the first time we each had two sets of chopsticks. Thankfully, the internet quickly taught us that one set was for serving ourselves from the community plates, and the other for eating. Don't use the eating pair for serving or the serving pair for eating -- it is bad form, especially with COVID being so huge here. Note: they are happy to bring serving spoons, forks and knives if you ask (or appear hopeless). My other mistake, in addition to the shrimp peeling fiasco, was not tipping. When I saw the 10% service fee, and knowing tipping is totally optional and not expected in Hong Kong (and most of SE Asia), I still should have left a bit more, especially considering how helpful they were.

The good news is that there are improvements to the service and actual Shanghainese fare, which deserves a review update and another star. Their soup dumplings (小籠包) can be inconsistent for skin thickness but the broth is retained. Instead of the full order of 10, a half order of 5 dumplings can be ordered. Their Shanghai noodles (上海粗炒麵) have better flavor than before, the string beans with pork (四季豆) are nicely charred, the crystal shrimp (水晶蝦仁) are also tasty, the edamame (雪菜毛豆炒豆干) and the stir fried rice cakes (炒年糕) are tasty. Service is spotty, but this is to be expected. During the wee hours of the night, it feels like there are more staff than customers. In terms of languages, English is limited, Mandarin is doable, but Cantonese is still king. (#2) That said, there is an English menu available here. Lunch and late night (#3) are still my favorite times to visit. While the outside awning has been updated in the last few years, most of the interior has not. May be a controversial take but their XLBs are... actually not great? They were a bit overcooked so the broth was almost non-existent. This pretty much makes or breaks it for any of us. The pot stickers had mixed review from the table. Some of us were not fan of the chewy texture (pot stickers shouldn't be that chewy). I like how well they were pan fried though. In the end it's all about texture lol. We were also split on the red bean pancake. The oldies felt it hasn't improved at all in the past 5 decades. The young folks thought it was good. Anyway, long story short this place is really a high 3*. Service was good. Food came out quick. Locals love it. Cash or Octopus card only. I would've given this a 4* if the XLBs came out better. This restaurant is a bit out of the way and the kind of place you wouldn't know about unless you knew a local. I learned of this spot from my aunt who lives in HK and has brought me here for dinner a couple times. The storefront does not have an English name so you will need to look for the Chinese title. Look for a red color sign. The restaurant interior has a feel of a hole in the wall. When you enter, grab a table if there is one open. Though be forewarned that you might need to share it if the restaurant fills up. It is best to get in early (5-ish) before the crowd at dinner time. There isn't an English menu, so it helps if you come here with a Chinese speaker. But there are menu item photos plastered over the wall so you could simply point to what you want here. The signature menu item here are their dan dan noodles. They are also a very good deal since it is just HK$24. This dish is spicy, though you can ask for a less spicy version but it is a bit watered down in flavor. On my recent trip, I had a few other items in addition to the dan dan noodles and all four of them were great. They have this fried fish appetizer which are crunchy that I couldn't get enough of. Then there were the two Sichuanese standards, chili green beans with ground beef and ma po tofu. The green beans were nice and crisp with plenty of garlic and chili pepper. The ma po tofu was silky and comforting. They also have xiaolongbao here which are HK$50 for an order of 8. For a restaurant that does not specialize in Shanghai cuisine, I thought these were quite good. Not the best I have had, but solid. The service is great here. And the chef was quite accommodating despite all of the special requests we had. The restaurant is a bit off the beaten path, but if you are looking for good Sichuanese food, Wing Lai Yuen is worth seeking out.
