The staff checks in with you the entire time you are at your table. There was a large plastic bowl at each table when you sit down. The dim sum was so good here. I grew up eating this stuff, in fact our freezer was full of it because my dad is a dim sum chef. The rice wrapping on the har gao and cheung fun was so smooth, that's how you tell if a place is good or not. Flavor wise it was all good, I think the radish cake could have used a few more minutes to really crisp up but overall, good experience. Waited on line for about 15 minutes before getting seated. Being that it is located in Sheung Wan, the restaurant had a lot of non-Chinese patrons. Good thing their menu is in both English and Chinese. The establishment isn't that big, so not much variety in terms of food. You can have dim sum at night here! Service was slow here at night, and there are actually a lot of foreigners since this is sort of close to LKF and SoHo and Central. Dim sum after drinking actually sounds pretty good, so this place does get packed! I liked their BBQ Pork Buns with the crispy and sweet top layer. The inside had a lot of sauce as opposed to other places which just had dry cha siu. So good and I'd totally come and buy some to walk and explore HK. Chicken Feet was good since it was flavored right and the shumai was piping hot and better than the other places I had dim sum with my family (sorry but it's true). We also got the minced beef and egg rice, which tasted like the not-so-greasy versions you can get at cha chaan teng's. This had a lot of rice and the soy sauce was really salty, but this was still good and filled our tummies. Obviously more expensive than normal dim sum places, but if you're comparing it to the ones that are nicer and a bit more expensive, it's not too bad price-wise. Really delicious. The line was around the block but moved quickly. I think I waited about 20 minutes. I was solo so I could only try a few things, but I liked everything I got. My favorite was the fried char siu bun. Unique texture - crispy, but not like deep fried usually is. I have no idea how they achieve that consistency, but it was terrific. The "spring roll inside rice roll" had interesting textures and I saw a lot of people ordering it. I also really liked the mince beef with egg --it had fresh herbs in it. Really really good dim sum place ! Same style as tim ho wan pretty much same menu as well. I did not have to wait in line but I went there for a late dinner (8:30 pm) Service is really quick and efficient! In a hood saturated with Dim Sum spots, Dim Sum Square along Hillier is a quick and easy option featuring a handful of well executed dishes. Everything is made to order and the food is ordered a la carte fashion instead of push carts; a trend that has become the preference for Hong Kongers to emphasize freshness and emphasize taste. Thankfully the latter is not a problem for this establishment. It certainly looks like a classier Hong Kong Style Cafe than any kind of tea house, and most Dim Sum folks would agree. This is not a banquet style home, but a more modern, western friendly version. It is small, yet good enough to house 35 people on any given morning / afternoon. A nice tidbit is they still serve Dim Sum in the evening in case anyone is thinking of shrimp rice noodles for dinner. The comparisons to Tim Ho Wan are inevitable, due to the similar menu and gringo vibe. Spoiler alert: bbq pork buns (叉燒包) aren't quite as good but still tasty in their own right. Another good bun, the egg custard buns (流沙包) are wonderfully runny and sweet. I am also a fan of the minced beef w/egg over rice (窩蛋牛肉飯) and I can get behind the lotus leaf rice (糯米雞). As always, I'm not a fan of the soup dumplings (小籠包) and most of the rice noodle wraps (腸粉) are a tad too silky for me. I haven't had a lot of luck with the glutinous pork dumplings (鹹水角) or the pork spare ribs (排骨). This is a small minority portion of the menu, as most everything else is really solid. The English speaking staff and quick patron turnover are appealing. Most Dim Sum lovers and beginners can revel in their picture menu, though the prices are not crazy but certainly not cheap for Dim Sum. When in a pinch and in Sheung Wan, one can certainly fill up at a place like Dim Sum Square. read more

Trust. + XLB (soup dumplings): these were quite good! Much better than the ones you'd get at say, Crystal Jade, though you should still visit Din Tai Fung for xiao long bao as they're truly their specialty item. + Spring rolls: pretty basic. They're deep fried and arrive piping hot, so I'd suggest waiting a solid 5 minutes before proceeding. Be warned! I did enjoy them, but because I over-ordered, decided to only have a few bites and save some precious stomach real estate. + Mango custard: eh, I've had better. It didn't taste very fresh and it's not something I'd repeat. + Custard buns: these were a bit too runny for my taste. I was expecting more of a custard filling, but I'm guessing the filling is simply hot egg yolk mixed with sugar. I did enjoy the squishy buns, though! Because Dim Sum Square is a popular destination for both locals and tourists (cheers for the English subtitles), you might have to queue for 5-15 minutes but the line moves quickly. Decided to go here after hearing how crowded Tim Ho Wan was. I went with my family around 11 am. It was very spacious. The food here was excellent. Some standouts include the crispy BBQ pro buns and the rice with meats wrapped in lotus leaf. Our family of four was full with only $24 USD worth of food, talk about cheap! Staff were really friendly and kept coming with hot tea refills. One thing that stood out was they were polite even though I didn't know how to speak Cantonese, which is not the case in many places here. I spoke in Mandarin with them and they were fluent in it. You have no idea how happy and excited I was when I first heard about the expansion of this dim sum restaurant. Before that, it would be crazy to go there during lunch time as it is completely PACKED and unfortunately there was not much seats inside. Therefore, you will understand how much of a good news for me, and many others to know there are now more seats inside with the new location. Dim Sum and Cantonese culture are so interwoven that it is a must-try thing when you are in Hong Kong, but as there are so many different other Chinese restaurants, why this? How about this - everything is freshly made and food quality is amazing. For those who do not read Chinese, no worries, diners get an ordering sheet with photos and also with English and Chinese descriptions. Everything is listed out so you do not need to worry about what kind of weird food you just put in your mouth. Since this is a rather small place, staff keeps pouring you tea and cleaning what you have finished so the service is pretty nice. Personally, I love the shrimping dumplings, oftentimes when you order that else where you may be very disappointed with the flavorless and thick wrapping skin; but not here: the skin had lost their springiness and it is relatively thin. Also, the Egg custard buns are very strong flavored and mind the juice inside though as it is steaming hot. It felt like they made it wrongly and forgot about the "soup" in the bun. Siew Mai was so dry and tasteless as well, it tasted bad even after drenching it in Chili sauce. The char siew rice rolls and minced beef fried egg rice were very mediocre, not sure why the latter is so popular. I thought most of the flavour came from the soy sauce, and the rest of the dish was so bland. The saving grace was their baked BBQ pork bun, which was very tasty. At least it wasn't crowded and we didn't have to wait in line on a weekday at 11AM! The crowd started pouring in after we left, which was around lunch time. Another dish I liked were the custard buns. When you bite into them, a yolk-like mixture oozes out. Just be careful as it could be a bit too hot and can spill all over the place! Shumai and all other dishes met expectations. Surprisingly, xiao long bao is also on the menu. I found it just okay, but if you come from a place where these babies are not easily accessible then definitely get an order! I have been here twice: before and after their renewal. The taste continues to be fabulously the same, but somehow with a newer and bigger facility, somehow they lost the original charm of that old and tiny shop that it used to be. You don't have to master Cantonese to make your orders, since they give you a piece of paper with their options written in English. This Dim Sum place is located in Sheung Wan, which is where I was spending most of my times in HK this time. So, it's really convenient to get good food around the hood that you spend most of your time at. We were glad that we came here slightly earlier than 12, because once the clock strikes 12, the restaurant literally filled up immediately, and you would see the line starting already. A few things that I really enjoyed here would be the BBQ pork bun, chicken feet and Siew Mai. If you would dare to try exotic food like chicken feet, theirs is really pretty good. Price wise, I think they are being pretty fair too. It was six of us together and the bill was less than 300HKD, which is what I wouldn't complain about while one's in Hong Kong Island, right? I might try somewhere next for the next time though, as there are so many good food in Hong Kong, and I just need to keep exploring! read more

Amazing Yum Cha and Dim Sum. Some local expat friends brought us here for Brunch. As with all popular places, if you dont get there before 12pm youre going to have to queue for a while. I had never tried Chicken's feet, but now I quite like them. They are done excellently here. Stand out dish for me by far was crispy fried BBQ pork buns. Steamed BBQ pork rice rolls were delicious also. Service is super speedy, because they obviously need to have a high customer turn over at tables. Reasonably priced, for excellent service and food. I loved the atmosphere here - every seat is filled here, if your party can fit at a table, you're sitting next to complete strangers.Service was extremely prompt. This ranks as of one of favorite meals of the year (if ever?), and given the price of this place, I could eat here everyday if there was one downstairs from me (unfortunately it's on the other side of the world) I started with the glutinous rice with meat, basically an asian shepherds pie. It was also a great dish to mix with everything else. Next was the baked bbq pork bun - this thing was stellar. A crispy, soft, sweet and savory little bun thats filled with delicious bbq pork. Also got shrimp dumplings that were light and sweet as well as shumai (pork and shrimp) which were savory and heavy. Another standout is the crispy egg roll thats wrapped in a spring roll. I don't recall what its name on the menu was but this was such an interesting/tasty item. I dont recall, but I think the meal was finished off with soup dumplings. As soon as you bite into one of these bad boys you realize that every other pork bun you have ever eaten is nothing but an imposter. A piece of poo pretending to be a pork bun. Everything else I ate here was mediocre. In full disclosure, i did eat the pork bun first, so it is possible that its' glory eclipsed all other items.
