Set A (top portion) and Set B (bottom portion). Obviously a yummy breakfast as we already started eating before the picture!
Patrick P.

Expect a (relatively quick) line at this popular Hong Kong style chain cafe. It was our first morning in HK and our first stop of the day was to get a Hong Kong style breakfast. Upon arrival, the line was out of the restaraunt--waited about 5 minutes until we quickly got a seat on the second floor. Place was super busy: we weren't able to get a hold of our waiter until 10-15 minutes after sitting. I ordered the Breakfast Set B (satay beef instant noodles, scrambled eggs, crispy bun), while my mom got Set A (squid and ham macaroni soup, sunny-side up eggs, bread roll). Both sets come with hot milk tea, and we also got an extra order of the crispy bun w/ condensed milk. After about 10 minutes of waiting for food, it arrived and it was definitely worth the wait! Eggs were cooked well and the noodles were satisfying, not too salty. However, the star of the show is the crispy bun: you can't go wrong with butter and condensed milk! My mom is a somewhat healthy eater but she enjoyed her meal, so points for that! Also, as expected for a chain restaurant, price can't be beat. Overall, a price-conscious place to go to if you're craving HK style cuisine that you know will deliver.

Tsui Wah is a chain restaurant that you'll see around HK. Check their website for the locations. This one is the closest to the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR/Chungking Mansion. Currently (Nov 2015) there is construction right in front of the restaurant, so it might be a tad tricky to find--walk through the narrow alley next to the construction zone, and you'll see the big "TW." We got the B breakfast (satay beef over ramen, scrambled eggs, bread with butter, hot milk tea) with a side of #2 (bread with condensed milk and butter) and an extra hot milk tea, all for HK$67 (about US$8.60). The star of the meal for me was the bread with butter and condensed milk. Sounds like a strange food, but it was so satisfying--tasted like honey butter on a warm, crispy, large bread roll. The satay beef ramen was fine but nothing spectacular (I'm not a huge fan of the noodle soup with meat type of HK breakfast) and the eggs and bread with butter were good. The milk tea was strong, hot, and flavorful.

Mini wonton noodle soup

Super classic HK restaurant. For super cheap, you can have the classic breakfasts of macaroni with squid, ham, and buttered bread or you can hit up a mini wonton noodle soup with roe. They're basically the same price, and you can get that classic HK milk tea for next to nothing. Service is quick, and it'll be gruff, but that's what you expect when you come here. Two floors, but the second is where you want to be because of the view.

This location's breakfast offering are limited to a few noodle soups and toasts, but not any pineapple buns. We stopped in for a light breakfast before some dim sum brunch reservations, so it wasn't an issue for us. But, if it we had been there for a full breakfast, we probably would have been disappointed with the limited breakfast selection.

Beef brisket noodle soup ($45) & milk tea ($20)

Quick & easy cafe style restaurant. I ordered a beef brisket curry noodle soup (~45HKD) and classic Chinese milk tea (~20HKD). Both were good and reasonably priced. That is probably why there was a long line out the door of people waiting to dine here. The service was negligent until you flag down someone to order. Pay at the register - Octopus card accepted among other options.

Did not come to Hong Kong for 3 years. Visit this cafe restaurant because it's near my service apartment. Order the famous fish cake and fishball noodle, was shocked that the eroding standard of of the fish cake and fish balls. They are so hard and too crunchy. Soup is lukewarm and the taste is fishy. Very sad and disappointing that an iconic brand did not maintain its consistency after so many years of brand building!

Really good Hong Kong restaurant. Had a line out the door, which is normal, but it moved quickly. Got a lamb curry dish, a vegetable soy noodle dish, and milk tea. Everything was really great and the portions were large. We were very hungry so it hit the spot.

Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. Aside from the classic breakfast items, they also offer many delicious rice and noodle dishes in the afternoon.

But for me it's different. A Hong Kong cafe is like heaven for a stoner who has the munchies (just to make it clear, I've never been stoned. At least not for a long time!) But I do see the appeal for someone with these cravings. Everything comes with gravy or some type of tomato sauce. They make Coke Cola ice creams floats. French toast squares with ice cream. Funky right? But we ordered: Baked Pork Chop: this was a decent version. I think one more pork chop in the entree would have made it complete. The tomato sauce with the rice was a nice blend. Mixed grill: this was my wife's entree and she didn't like it much. She said it was ok. Flat noodles: that's what it's called in the menu but I know it as Chow Fun. I always like this dish and Kam Kee makes it decent. Service was proficient and friendly. My wife said it's a three star eatery but what takes this place into four category is they put effort into the design or ambience of the cafe whereas many places don't invest in that. It's a nice looking restaurant with decently satisfying comfort food.

This place is a little hard to find because you have to walk all the way to the end of a street with a dead end and it's hidden in the corner. The restaurant itself is clean and spacious. The service was pretty good by Hong Kong standards. I ordered the scramble eggs with BBQ pork over rice and it came out in less than ten minutes! The dish looked amazing and the portion was pretty big, although I had no trouble finishing the whole thing. Hong Kong's scrambled eggs are on some other level. This spot makes them runny, and although I usually don't like my eggs runny, they tasted pretty amazing here. Doused with sweet, light soy sauce and succulent pieces of famous Chinese BBQ pork on a bed of rice, this was definitely one of the most comforting and satisfying meals here. The creamy chicken macaroni soup with ham and abalone strips (and side of soft eggs with toast) made me feel like a kid again. The beef and egg sandwich, and spam and egg sandwich were exactly as expected; they came out hot and fast and in generous portions. Drinks were great too, especially the lemon tea served with real citrus slices (both hot and iced were solid), and the milk tea was as authentic as it gets. Value felt fair for the area. From the menu, tea/breakfast-style sets sit around HK$40-46, lunch plates are roughly HK$52-64, and most drinks are in the HK$18-24 range (with a few around HK$26-28), so you can order a full spread without the bill getting out of hand. Good to know: they only accept cash and Octopus, so don't count on credit cards. Overall, an easy 4 stars for a dependable, grounding first stop.

My friend and her husband was craving wontons in chili oil and braised beef with tendons and okra. They really enjoyed their dishes. Everything we ordered was good, but I'm docking off a star for the servers in the restaurant (who weren't Chinese BTW and we weren't sure whether to speak in Chinese or English?). There's English and photos throughout the menu, so that was extremely helpful. We ordered the Shrimp Wonton Noodle Soup in Fish Broth and Scrambled Egg with Sea Bass Chow Fun. And man, both were amazingly delish. Color me impressed. The fish broth was def coming through. The wontons were packed with the shrimp. The sea bass was fresh. The chow fun had the right amount of seasoning. The hot sauce on the side gave the perfect amount of kick I was seeking. And both dishes came out to $17USD. Pretty standard pricing. As for the one star knock down, it's due to the limited breakfast menu. We were so excited from delish midnight snack, that we came back for breakfast two days later.
