This review is only for the pineapple bun…read more I do not recommend. On multiple, multiple food review sites writing about the best pineapple bun in HK, Kam Fung made the list. Happened to be in wan chai today so why not- We got take out for two buns- one with butter and one without. But even before opening the package we knew something was wrong. Each bun was wrapped in plastic, but was so extremely heavy. How could a bun be so heavy? Opening it and taking a bite - it's like chewy raw dough. I'm not sure if it was really raw, but that's what it felt like. I couldn't finish it. I didn't even want to take a second bite, really. I'm actually very surprised at the good reviews on the bun here. Its one of the few times that Google reviews are more fair and accurate than Yelp reviews for me. Don't trust the lists!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't get this bun!!!!

This Cha Chaan Teng is really for old school HK'ers. I was not a fan of any of their "baos"…read more.. Their milk tea was not great either. It didn't have the milk tea flavor... Perhaps it's just not for my kind of tastebud... my younger son liked his macaroni in soup. My older one did not like his "bor lor yao"... which is the pineapple bun with a thick piece of butter... all the baos were very dense... and not fluffy like other ones we've tried. The only saving grace - the Chicken Pie! It's crusty and flavorful. Anyway, small shop, a few tables and you will be sharing with strangers if you're solo. They do pour the left over soups into a bucket right underneath your seats... so not quite sanitary... but you'll live. Bring lots of wet naps. Cash Only.

Although it was busy on my first visit, it didn't feel overwhelming, nor did I feel rushed and herded by staff. Orders are done through the QR code on the table, but my phone service was wonky that day and one of the employees was very nice and took my order. That did lead me to panic ordering the HOTTEST egg toast, but that's my own fault and I surely paid the consequence. I like spicy food, but that lacked flavor and only burned. They have a big menu, including vegetarian options and famous HK bakery items like egg tarts and pineapple bread. The regular egg toast is delicious, a heaping serving of creamy eggs over thick toast. Then of course I had to try the famous Hong Kong Milk tea, which was also delicious. It's made with a full bodied black tea and has a rich earthy flavor. No sugar added so it's not sweet unless you make it so. When I was finished, I paid at the register and was on my way.

We got a char siu macaroni soup, bolo bao, and truffle scrambled egg toast. There was a lot of egg on the toast but the truffle tasted more like a dark chocolate crumble? Not sure if that's what it was supposed to be but still appetizing. Macaroni soup was delicious. I just enjoy pasta in soup. Lol. The bolo bao was a bit of a disappointment due to the bread being cold. I don't know if there was an option to just tell them we wanted it hot. Also ordered Hong Kong milk tea but the waiter misheard even though he repeated it and sent a sweet tea instead. Not bad for a comfort food spot.

Several staff speak English but we weren't given any English menus so we relied on Google Translate. Like the majority of cha chaan tengs, service here is quick! We didn't particularly feel rushed when deciding what to order but the restaurant wasn't ever full so maybe it's different during peak hours. When you're done eating, pay at the front. You can also grab some of the baked goods to-go at the front. We ordered the classics to share. The Pineapple Bun was so good that i ordered another one to go. The crust is crunchy and sweet, with a fluffy inside...this definitely could be in the top running for best buns in the city. The scrambled eggs were buttery and silky, very different from regular American scrambled eggs. And finally, the macaroni soup had a very simple, clean broth but was very flavorful. If you need something to warm you up, this is perfect. Overall, delicious meal and I left so satisfied. This was the perfect end to our Hong Kong trip and I can't wait to be back!

The bread was soft with top crispy,, maybe cause of the butter but it wasn't warm when it came out. I also ordered one with bbq pork and was given a regular pineapple bun instead. It was a great mistake because it came fresh out of the oven and it was AMAZING! The one with the bbq pork was good, but it wasn't hot otherwise it would have been better. With my love for bread, I bet I could eat 5-10 pineapple buns in one sitting if they all came out fresh from the oven!

I had extremely high hopes for this cha chaang teng and after not having enough time to visit…read moreduring our last trip, we prioritized Honolulu Coffee Shop for breakfast. The restaurant is pretty spacious and when we visited, it was pretty empty. We had no trouble getting a table for our large group of six people. Staff speak some English and they have English menus available so we had no trouble ordering. I believe they're most known for the pineapple buns and egg tarts so of course, we ordered several to share. It's also an incomplete visit to a cha chaang teng without the coffee milk tea and on top of that, I also got a side of scrambled eggs. The pineapple bun was kind of dense and dry, even with the slab of butter. The egg tarts were also dry with a plain-tasting custard. The coffee milk tea was fine but we didn't realize until visiting another cha chaang teng that hot usually means unsweetened. And the scrambled eggs were so plain...I just remember cha chaang teng scrambled eggs being super silky and creamy. This was just disappointing and I didn't need to order normal, regular-tasting scrambled eggs. They're saving grace is how cheap everything was. For that price, it just felt like we got what we paid for...lower quality food. I was very confused because I feel like I read a lot of raving reviews about this place so maybe we visited on an off day. But out of every place we tried, this was pretty low on our list.

Unfortunately this did not meet my expectations, and was definitely my least favorite out of the restaurants we went to. Lots of seating available, for parties big and small. They have English menus available as well. The pineapple bun looked promising, but once I bit into it, the bun itself was not very fluffy and rather dense, and the crust didn't seem to have enough flavor to it. The egg tart crusts were also dry, and the custard itself was just ok. I tried a piece of my friends french toast, and that was pretty good, although they took the syrup away pretty early on even though we were still eating. The coffee milk tea was also just ok, nothing special and didn't really have a strong taste in either direction. I'd skip this spot and go to a different cha chaang teng.

The fried rice was flavoured just right. And the chicken in it was so juicy and tender. The Stone Pan served steak was great( for me, not sure for visitors from the US and abroad) You could choose two kinds of steaks from the menu and choose what sauce( best for the black pepper one )( don't expect to much on a HKD$47 steak set ) Overall, it was a great restaurant and I would like to come again soon.

This is a review for the Fu Wah Cafe located on Hankow Road in TST. Quite polished and glamorous…read morethis cha chaan teng was with shiny, gold accents in places. It was a refreshing mix of retro and modern. Menus, which were plastered onto the tables themselves, came with English accompaniment. And it was open much earlier than other businesses in the area (6:30AM) so we ended up here twice having had some early mornings here and there. They had a few convenient set breakfast options which they do not like to deviate from upon request. Regardless, the Luncheon Meat w/ Macaroni in Tomato w/ a Buttered Pineapple Bun was a solid choice for 45 HKD as was the Satay Beef Instant Noodles w/ Scrambled Egg and Bun (43 HKD). Add on a couple of other items like Hong Kong Coffee Milk Tea and Egg Tarts for a few more dollars and you're carb loaded for the day. To note, their pineapple buns were the BIGGEST and fluffiest. These can be ordered outside from their street-side window as an easy grab-and-go too. Service was charmingly brash and to the point, haha.
