I'm not an expert on Indonesian food but I think I would prefer the Malay version of these dishes. None of them really stood out of me, but it was still a solid meal. On a crap shoot, we choose Indonesian Restaurant 1968. Walking in around 6:45pm on a Saturday without a reservation, they were able to seat us, but the place had filled up within the hour (with a lot of groups too, for this place would be good for groups). We were sat quickly, order taken and before we knew it, food was in front of us. We felt the delivery of food was super fast (a good sign that this place would be a good lunch spot too). The space is vintage, low lit, comfortable, woods, open kitchen. Some high top tables, mostly regular tables, the rooms flowed pretty good and had a good vibe. Staff was welcoming, efficient, on it. We enjoyed pineapple fried rice, tofu, some curry and a fish. I do not eat meat and in addition to a vegetarian menu (you have to ask for it), there were plenty of options. Food was served fast, hot, good quality and tasty. Although nothing culinarily off the charts going on here, I found this place good and would go back. Maybe warrants 3.5 stars if I had to get specific, but for purposes of kind of a rustic cool factor going on here, they get 4 star.

However, after I sat down, I noticed that, despite the menu claiming it to be their specialty, nobody around was eating it. I noticed also that the menu looks like a regular HK cafe style menu, with dishes such as spaghetti bolognese, pork chop udon in borscht, sweet and sour pork rice... I ended up splitting with a friend a laksa noodle, decidedly not authentic with a brownish curry base they probably use for all curry dishes, and some satays, with a starch-thickened dipping sauce. Just a place for office workers nearby to grab an inexpensive lunch, but definitely not if you want something nice.

This place specializes in Penang food. If you're looking for creamy coconut laksa, you wouldn't find it here; but if you also love the sour and spicy asam laksa like I do, theirs is wonderful and definitely a must try. We also tried the bakuteh, the silver noodles (claypot loh see fun), and some kaya toast. The bakuteh was well seasoned, while the silver noodles was really tasty, but could be a tad too oily for some folks. Stick to the noodles and savory dishes -- the kaya toast was just so so and there wasn't nearly enough kaya on it. They also do take out -- which is a great option if you're just looking for lunch.

We came during their lunch service without reservation. We were really lucky to get seated immediately before they got super busy. They have an amazing menu and lunch set menu, but I preferred à la carte. I wished I could order every single item on the menu to try tho because everything just looked so good. My husband always loves the roti canai, so he got both the fish and lamb. I got the Mee Siam, and Hainanese chicken rice. My little one got the fried chicken (excellent, didn't taste like fast food). For desserts and drinks we ordered Teh Tarik (of course), soursop soda, coconut jelly, cendol and durian pudding (their signature desert using Musang King- must try). Everything was delicious and authentic. We all had food coma afterward. Nice, clean and chill vibe. Service was friendly. We'll definitely gonna come back when visiting HK again. Highly recommended!!!

The restaurant is on the Second Floor for the Hotel Jen. There is a pretty large and open dining area. We got there at 11:30am, right before the lunch rush came in, and it filled up quickly. We had different dishes and found them to be flavorful, I'd recommend their Rojak which is pretty spicy, their beef satay and Char Kway Teoy. We saved room for their Malaysian shaved ice with ice cream (Ice Kacang) which was really good. This place is better than a lot of the Malaysian food we could get back home in the Bay Area, CA, so I'd highly recommend this place and we'd likely return next time we're in HK.

It is because the cheung fun was pretty darn good - way better than anything I can get back home. And the glutinous rice bowl? The best taste and texture in a glutinous rice I've ever had. This is a three generation business that just churns out good food. Currently run by second generation, Ng Siu-Fung, and with sons and other family members involved in the business, Keung Kee has been in the community for 70 + years and plans to be century old institution that puts out representative Hong Kong snack food. Yes, this is a snack shop, not a bing sutt, not a cha chaan teng, and certainly not a restaurant. They started as a street food cart selling only snacks. Their non-soup or congee dishes are still modestly sized for one person. Now, one of their signature dishes is glutinous rice in a bowl with lap cheong and lap mei, some mushrooms, and a sweet sauce. Thai Golden Phoenix glutinous rice, soaked and double boiled, and prepared slightly differently than straight stir frying. The rice texture comes from a combination of new and old cooked glutinous rice - very moist yet satisfyingly chewy. And the stir fried nuggets of cheung fun with dried shrimp are addicting. Adding soft scrambled egg makes it even harder to share. The Keung Kee name is not unique. There is a dai pai dong and roasted meat shop with the same name. Make sure you go to Lockhart, not elsewhere, and go into the one the new golden lettered sign!

It's probably because they can -- they've been awarded a Michelin recommendation. To be fair, they have quite a few items that are very good. Their cheung fun has got the right consistency, easy to slurp with the sauces that they came with, yet can still be picked up with a wooden stick. The lo mai fan (fried glutinous rice) is fragrant, fried to perfection, with the seasoning distributed evenly all over. I quite like their sweet dessert soups as well! It's not as common to find the sweet yuba dessert soup anymore, and it's a must get for me. If you like anything with beans, the zha zha is nicely done too. I regularly get a large order to go just to share with my family across the harbour; it's that good. The service is... Hong Kong style. As long as you try hard to not get in the way you'll be fine.

Food: 4 stars Service/Environment: 3 stars Value: 4.5 stars Overall: 3.75 stars Recommendations: Caramelized pork patty over rice, the Chong fen This is a place to go for a quick meal. They have signs in Chinese urging their customers not to stay there too long taking pictures and playing games on your phone. So this isn't the place to have a long chat with your friend but rather a place to go grub. Another down side is the place is really small and is quite popular so you definitely will feel cramped sitting on your small stool. The highlights are really the pork petty with a fried egg over rice and the Chong fun. These are the things you want to order especially the pork patty rice. The kaya toast, char Shiu rice, and the pork rib soup are pretty good but not great. I would stay away from the coffee. For some reason it is 22 hkd and tastes like instant pre-mixed coffee you would get at a supermarket.

Two super friendly ladies who spoke not a word of English welcomed us. They took the lids off of a line of containers full of delightful Indonoms and loaded plates with a heap of rice. Then we just took tongs and helped ourselves to a delightful amount of tasty things: - tempeh and boiled eggs in a golden currylike sauce - tempeh and spicy green peppers with tiny squid - chicken wings - bamboo shoot cooked in coconut milk - smoky, spicy tempeh with veggies - potatoes cooked with bell peppers and tomato - salty fish We were also offered iced lemon tea or coffee and opted for the coffee. Served black with sugar and condensed milk, if desired. On the table were two pots of chili sauce: a red sambal, and a salty fishy one with crushed lemongrass. Both super yes please. And the bill. Came. To. A whopping... $78 for the two of us. Is this a dream? Yes. Will I be back to see if it still exists, likely some time next week? Yes.
