The format of Nam Kee (南記) reminds me of those Japanese noodle spots where there is automated ordering (via a machine), payment is pre-collected, and the bowls of noodle / congee are quickly assembled for one's eating pleasure. It may feel like Asian style fast casual, but Nam Kee has done a good job at maintaining affordable prices without sacrificing too much quality (or manpower!) in an area as saturated as Causeway Bay.
Lunch might feel like a zoo here during rush hour, but anytime beyond that this place is comfortable and quiet. Order from the ticket machine downstairs, which has both Chinese and English as a language option. Bring the ticket upstairs and hand it to the cashier lady who will register the order. Grab a seat and wait for your number to be called or check it out on the marquee.
My favorite bowl of noodles is the mixed wonton with ho noodles (河粉). The broth isn't phenomenal, but the wontons are well made. A little hot oil with the ho noodles is recommended and a few slurps, chomps, and $20 HKD later, I'm happily satisfied. Their congee is also good, though I think they could stand to have better youtiao (油條). The ones I've been dipping in the congee have been a bit bready than crispy.
This isn't the only Nam Kee in HK of course, just a busy one during lunch time. This is a good spot to solo lunch option or casual eatery with friends. Another plus: Octopus card is accepted here. read more
