We went to Zinnias for the first time tonight. Seemed to be a younger crowd as compared to us (two women in their 60's.) It was cold even in the Tavern and the door to outside was open for much of the time. The young woman who seated us was pleasant enough, switched us to a table farther away from the door., We were waited on soon, beer selection was good. The tortilla soup was vegetarian, much appreciated and quite tasty. The main menu as sparse at best; my wife ordered the burger, I ordered a spinach salad. The burger and fries were OK, the salad was pitiful. Too much spinach, lentils buried at the bottom and barely there. Beets were flavorful but limited. We ended with a glass,of wine each; my Prosecco was not sweet enough, Sauvignon Blanc fine. The price for this mediocre meal was almost $100 with a 20% gratuity already added in. Outrageous! Would we return? Not until summer when we can go to the beer garden. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Nice old school charm, and a good location. However, it was a disappointment. The only reservation available was at 8:30, but we arrived at 8:00 expecting to grab a drink in the tavern (which looks very nice). The place was half empty. We were seated immediately and ordered drinks. We then ordered our shared appetizer and entrees. The entrees arrived in less than 10 minutes. The appetizer never appeared. I ordered a glass of wine with my entree, and 15 minutes later I reminded the server about my wine. The bus staff wanted to clear our plates before we finished eating. My wine arrived after I had finished my meal. We were out in under an hour having spent $130. The food was "OK". They add a 20% service charge that you don't learn about until you receive the bill. I may try to tavern one day, but not the restaurant again. read more

What a pleasant property where you can eat in the pub, main dining room or in the beautiful outdoor lawn. Service was excellent. Friends came in from Baltimore to join us for dinner. Now to the food: Bland, nothing special. I had the buratta appetizer and it was poor quality at best. My entree was the salmon and it was not very good came out dry. My guests were recommended to order the fried chicken major mistake. Popeyes blows this fried chicken away. Another guest had the swordfish and that was outstanding. All in all after a raving Washington post review and a $300.00 dinner bill this was a major major let down. read more

Amazing! Great easy food. Great drinks. Lots of atmosphere all around. You have the cute indoor space, bar area. The lovely outdoor area which feels like being at grandmas backyard estate, but in a fun hip way. And the tavern downstairs is cool. Great service and all around awesome place right in our back yard. Great dinner and breakfast. Looking forward to going back. This will be our easy quick local hang. read more

This place is perfect! First -- it has a beautiful atmosphere -- a historic building, lots of light, and big windows where you can see the gorgeous gardens with flowers everywhere. There are multiple spaces --each distinct depending on your mood -- including a cool downstairs tavern for happy hour with some live music and a gorgeous (dog friendly) and large outdoor area. The service is amazing! Everyone has been so attentive and friendly. The food is delicious. And excellent wifi for working over a cup of coffee while overlooking the gardens. I came for lunch on Thursday and loved it so much that same night I returned for dinner and knew I would becomes a regular. Amazing addition to Silver Spring. read more

Nice place. We arrived at 8;25 and supposedly they close at 10. We were rushed to order and had to keep changing our selection because they were out of the most appealing entrees. When we asked for some bread at 9:10 we were told that the kitchen was closed. Not a pleasant experience. Not worth the money. read more

Great spot, beautiful, gardens, drinks and service. Beer menu and cocktails are both fantastic. I like the rotating menu and the addition of more vegetarian & vegan options generally--keep it up!!! read more

Finally got a chance to visit this beautiful spot yesterday. The hostess and our server were very friendly and accommodating to my cousin and I. We sat in the beautiful garden which I highly suggest for first timers if the weather allows. We grabbed a coffee before being seated from the cafe and enjoyed it. We ordered the caesar salad, steak sliders, and chicken tenders and fries which were okay - we had hoped for a more flavorful meal which was slightly disappointing considering the cost. However we knew the restaurant was trying out a few things on their menu and will likely come up w a permanent one in the future. I would probably revisit in the future if I see that the menu has added more options. Overall definitely worth the try for a nice relaxed vibe. read more

Innovative small plates and mains. Not exotic but approachable! Servings are goos size. The wine pours are generous and the wine selection well curated! My hamburger was everything a great burger should be. Excellent meat, great dressings in a tender bun. The fries were perfect. My husband's gnocchi dish was full of fresh veggies and tender gnocchi. The trout tasted fresh, not the least bit fishy with a wonderful stuffing. Even the grandchildren were more than happy. The giant double chocolate cookies with salted caramel ice cream had everyone asking for a few more spoons. We will be back! read more

Preferred Mrs. K. No longer buffet. More seating available. Prices much higher. Food ok. Free parking available. Doubt if I'll return.

The food, service and ambiance was awesome. For those who remember when Mrs k Toll House , the gardens and the outdoor areas

Wish there were more stars for places like this!Seriously the best place to enjoy awesome food and drinks without having to leave the kids at home. Most family friendly place in the DMV. We've been at least ten times and will continue to go to enjoy the satiating menu drawing from international influences fused with unmatched presentation as well as the multitude of phenomenal craft beer and cocktail choices. read more

My wife and I were recently had a belated, post-COVID wedding / anniversary celebration at Zinnia. We had ~90 guests, and it all turned out just wonderful! Justin and his team were flexible to work with throughout the planning process. There were abundant food and drink options, and it was a fun menu to chose from with cocktails, local beers, nice wines and diverse / seasonal food offerings. They were accommodating in bringing in outside decorations and vendors (we had caricature artists and live music). On the day of, things were great. We received so many comments from our guests about the food being delicious. The staff was awesome - engaged, friendly & having fun. While fortunate with the weather, the combination of indoor / outdoor space was fantastic - it was a great setting for what we wanted the event to be! It was important to us that the event felt more like a party and represented us. We were struggling to find venues where we could accomplish that. We are so glad we chose Zinnia and that they were so great to work with. Our excitement level kept building as the day neared, and the day of exceeded expectations. In hindsight, we cannot imagine it having gone better. Thank you to Justin and the whole Zinnia team! See you soon for dinner and a cocktail! read more

Beautiful garden and entrance. Beware, steps can be a little daunting. Our server Cecille was awesome. Made wonderful recommendations. The Beet salad was my guests absolute favorite. The oysters were wonderful. The scallops were ok. Had a smokey flavor. My filet was perfectly cooked but not as tender as I would have liked. Please consider adding Rum chatta and Chambord to your bar. The gelato and creme brulee were again wonderful. One thing be aware of is, a 20% service fee is automatically added to the check to ensure server's make a liveable wage. Hope to visit and check out the tavern downstairs if step's can be limited. read more

This is my first time dining here. It's an interesting spot. My group ate in the Tavern section which is very rustic. The menu was kind of limited, but we all found an entree and the food was delicious. There were quite a few people dining at the tables in the garden. Each outdoor table has its own fire pit. read more

What a pleasant surprise the new "Ms. K's" is. It is now Zinnia and the restaurant is much more upbeat. I always found Ms. K's dependable although pricy, but I recently tried the new Zinnia and I was impressed. The seating seems to be mostly outside for now, due to renovations, but the outdoor patio was perfect. Lots of separation between tables, cozy seating, lots of garden activity including a little pond and bridge. Hey, the service was spot on; kudos to the waiters. Prompt, polite, informed. The food was very tasty, starting off with a humus plater followed by seared salmon on a bed of creamed spinach (I could be wrong on the bedding). The salmon was perfect...how did they get the crust on top? Say, that's a great beer and wine list, too. If you want a unique experience, eating outdoors, or enjoying a summer beverage, Zinnia is worth trying. read more

4+ stars. Not quite 5 but they can see 5 from where they sit. We've been to the Zinnia Tavern several times and thoroughly enjoyed it; inviting atmosphere, good food, good drinks, friendly service. But tonight, since it just opened, we decided to try The (just opened) Restaurant - only, I believe, the second night of service there. What a GREAT addition to the neighborhood! Excellent and delightfully complex house cocktails (The "Bird Word" with pineapple, rum, basil, and lime is one of my new favorites). Wonderful, sophisticated food. Threads the needle between edgy and comfort very nicely, and that's not an easy path to walk. My food-conservative mother-in-law did not fully UNDERSTAND her tiny herb dumplings, but she loved them. (I would order them myself in a minute! They were delicious.) Husband and I - moderate foodies - quite adored our meals. My prawns were perfectly prepared, and his buttered swordfish was decadent. (Even MIL who doesn't LIKE swordfish said she'd order it when we come back!) Broiled oysters were a vibrant appetizer, and the creme brulee was a luscious, astonishingly light finish with a kiss of coconut and a perfect crisp crust. Minor quibbles: Service hasn't quite got the timing down. Not BAD - and very friendly and warm - but the rhythm isn't quite right yet. After dinner coffee ought not take 15 minutes for decaf. And coffee should ALWAYS come with an offer of cream, as opposed to a long wait while the coffee cools. And we were surprised that the bar didn't stock Frangelico (or an off-brand substitute) ... and if they didn't have it, Lemoncello is a trendy but totally inappropriate suggestion for an alternative. We finally settled on Amaretto and that was an acceptable but not ideal option. Notes: This is a leisurely space. We spent almost 3 hours, and could have spent longer. And it is NOT inexpensive ... be prepared. It would be easy to drop 3 bills - or more - for two people. Drinks run $15+. Also, this is a tasting menu - mains are NOT a full meal. Assume at least a side, and probably a starter and/or dessert. Apologies: I really meant to take photos but the food was too good and a got distracted and didn't. In any case: food, drinks and service are all good-to-excellent! Overall, we are thrilled to have this seven minutes from our house. read more

We recently held a retirement party at Zinnia's for 30 people on a Tuesday evening (when the restaurant was closed) from 6-9. We worked with Justin Kaplan-Markley to establish the setup, the menu, and the budget. Justin made all of these tasks extremely easy. The party itself was terrific in every respect: the food (appetizers, main course, desserts, wine and beer) was excellent and nicely presented, the restaurant looked lovely, and the staff were efficient and responsive. Everyone had an enjoyable evening. We will definitely return to Zinnia, both for date nights and future party dinners. Highly recommend!!! read more

Only been once, but the children running in an out during a happy hour was a bit annoying. Food good, but pricey, what we had anyhow (a special entree) . Drinks okay, also pricey. Friendly servers although a ton hanging out and looking like they had not much to do when we were there. Will try again. read more

The best time to come is Thursday nights when you have the option in the cellar bar of hearing an amazing piano player, Dave Ylvisaker. Make reservations! read more

Went on a lark to have an afternoon cocktail at the tavern. My drink was delicious (rosemary!), and the bartenders were exceptionally gracious with a loquacious elderly woman who was there alone. Food was good, compared to miserable options around, it was good. Atmosphere was nice, people enjoyed it. We were sitting inside, with a pleasant view to outside area. What I totally did not like nor appreciate that they impose 20% tip, it is included into the bill. The service was good, no complaints, but it is wrong that the owner decides on tips and not the customer, kind of authoritarian. Something I have never encountered in the U.S. in Europe they sometimes include tips, in some countries but %% is between 6 and 10%. Then customer can add on top, if one wants. read more

Food was great!!! Location really nice... Sadly as a member of the LGBT, community my waitress was very rude. It was slow for her to pick-up on this fact. But each time she came back to the table she gave me the look, up and down looked at what I was wearing etc. Once she decide she was right. She waved her hand for me to leave the restaurant. Now unless her family own the restaurant. It is not her place to tell someone to leave. That is sending the owners money out of the door. She is a silly little girl... I was very hurt by what that girl did and left feeling awful for the rest of the night..... read more

We worked with the event coordinator, Justin, to plan my mom's surprise retirement party. Justin was so responsive and helped us to quickly secure the space and plan from there. The day of was amazing! Food was delicious, the bartenders were great, staff was super attentive and the space is beautiful. The kids had plenty of space to run around safely in their gated garden and everyone was able to really enjoy themselves. I've also been for brunch with just a few friends and that was great as well. I love the use of all the spaces at this restaurant. I've dined in the tavern and the main dining area, and I'm looking forward to sitting outdoors for our next visit before it gets too humid outside. I ordered the swordfish which is something not usually on my radar but I'm glad I did. It was cooked to perfect temperature and the flaky moistness of the flesh was perfectly balanced by the lemon caper sauce. Their burgers are always reliably delicious! I rather like that the tab includes the gratuity and saves me the trouble of deciding. Whether it's to celebrate an occasion or a date night, this is a great place with friendly staff. I'm very happy to enjoy this new incarnation of this place. read more

I would have rated this higher but they totally fumbled our arrival. We were about 10 minutes early for our reservation, so the guy tells us he'll check on our table and for us to wait in our choice of a couple of places. I ask, "So, you'll come find us?" He says Yes. So we go upstairs and we wait and wait. After 20 minutes, I go down to the desk. The original guy is gone and I ask the hostess, "Did you forget about us?" She looks up our name and says our table is ready. I asked again, "So, you forgot about us?" She says, "I think someone else checked you in." She shows us to our table. The rest of the night was OK. But something is wrong with their system or their employees. read more

who serves under cooked cold poached eggs for $22? small salad not dressed. what is the post good critic thinking?

The service was good. The food was pretty good. The accessibility was appallingly bad. When our party made a reservation via Resy, once booked, we were invited to respond to questions "to help (the restaurant) better prepare for your experience." The first question was, "Are there any mobility restrictions withing your party?" The answer was "Yes." No follow up on that. We arrived at the Zinnia in time to park in a parking space designated for folks with mobility problems. We were a bit baffled because it was a ways away from the entrance to the restaurant. When we got to the entrance, we were invited to walk down some cement steps, some without railing, to a long uneven walkway to get to our table. Asked what happened to "help(ing) us to prepare for your experience, there was simply no answer. Eventually it was explained that there was a ramp near the far end of the parking lot. No clear signage. No idea of of how one might let restaurant staff know of one's presence far from the entrance to the restaurant. These conditions constitute reportable violations of the ADA. We prefer not to report, but to rather that Zinnia address the problem. Sooner versus later. read more

Went to Zinnia for afternoon drinks/late lunch. Originally planned to eat in the beautiful outdoor garden - comfy Adirondack chairs w/low tables - but the weather had other plans! The staff was so quick and accommodating to move us into the Tavern which was very cozy as the light rain turned into a downpour outside! Had delicious bubbly with the Farmer Larder which was really well done. Then shared a cheeseburger - perfect! All in all - a very fun Sunday afternoon! read more

My husband and I took my out-of-state sister and brother-in-law to Zinnia for dinner a couple weeks ago. We loved the decor and ambiance, and the waiters couldn't have been nicer. The food, unfortunately, wasn't quite as good. I had the crabcake sandwich and found the crab pretty bland. My sister's steak and cheesecake were equally mediocre. I was very disappointed as I had had trout at Zinna another time and found it delicious. Please, management, bring the food up to the level of the ambiance. I love neighborhood restaurants and want this one to do better. read more

My husband and I thought we would try this place again. The ambiance is great. We sat outside on a nice warm day. We didn't receive a bill. Instead the waiter told us it was 60$ including 20% tip. We had hamburgers. We won't be back. I've always leave a 20% tip on my own. I just didn't like how it ended. Not seeing the bill was not a good feeling.
