My husband and I went for our first time at 5:30 pm on Thurs. 9/14/22. We mistakenly thought we were meeting another couple who had made reservations. Since we actually did not have reservations we asked to be seated outside. The only tables available were low cocktail tables with Adirondack chairs. We were told we could be seated at a table more appropriate for a meal if one became open. Happy hour prices were still available so my husband ordered a glass of wine. We could not find items suitable for a meal on the garden menu so we asked our server about the menu inside. He told us that it was different and he checked to see if we could be seated inside. He said there was a table available and it was a two top. I went inside to get the table while my husband payed for his wine. At that time the server told us there was a 20% gratuity already added to the check. SURPRISE! Inside there were several tables open, not just one two top. Most of them stayed open during our entire stay. The sound level was pretty high despite the small number of full tables. The menu was not as limited as outside, but it was not extensive. My husband ordered gnochi and asparagus. I ordered seafood chowder and fried green tomatoes. The food was tasty. Except for the fried green tomatoes which had a fairly hard thick crust with not much flavor. I noticed that the chowder was warm, but not hot. We shared a slice of chocolate truffle cake. It came straight from the fridge to our table. The frosting was yummy but the cake was dry. The coffee was very good. Unfortunately, I had several hours of explosive trips to the toilet starting shortly after we got home. We will not eat here again due to limited and over-priced menu selections and the automatically added gratuity. read more

Overall the food is mediocre but the setting is nice. Hummus trio was interesting. The fries were cold and the Caesar salad was uninspired. The cookie dessert (which was mediocre) is served on a piece of paper over a tray. The paper was disintegrating and we had to be really careful not to eat it. read more

I have come several times either for coffee or a latte to take with me or brunch from the Café to enjoy in the garden seating. Love this place - the food, specialty pastries, and coffee/espresso are excellent and the building and grounds are lovely. Also very nice to sit in the garden with young kids in tow. read more

Food was ok. The place was packed at 5:30 on a Friday night. It is very noisy - to the point we left as soon as we finished eating. Will not go back. read more

Atmosphere is lovely. We sat inside in the back room where it was packed and quite loud. If you don't like loud there are other seating areas in the front and outside. People with food allergies will be disappointed with this meal. Even though items are denoted as gluten free on the menu, it's all fried together so cross contaminated. Every menu item has an element of dairy as well. I would encourage others who suffer from food allergies to call ahead and ensure there's anything to eat. After no appetizers other than a salad with no cheese worked for me, I got the prawns for my entree and it came out raw. When i pulled it from the shell it was visible raw. The other ladies I was with also made a variety of comments about the food lacking flavor, coming out cold, and the alcohol drinks being not what they expected despite having a familiar name. The place had a lot of people so there's clearly a need/interest in this restaurant. If they can improve the menu and drinks this could be great but unfortunately isn't right now. read more

An alcoholic's dream--their focus is on anything alcoholic while the food plates are terrible, and the whole place overpriced. Not a surprise, really, since the owner is in the business of spirits. Won't return; not nearly on the same level as Mrs. K's where they served good food for anyone. Now it's simply an overpriced local bar/pub with token, mediocre "food". But that's typical for food at most bars--crappy; because drunk people don't care about the quality of food. read more

Came for a birthday today with a reservation in the garden. Had a lovely time. Lovely space. So happy to see it open again. Great drink menu. Good service. I wish the menu were a bit bigger with more options but the carrot and humus sandwich with salmon was delicious. I live in the area and have been a few times and the team always tries to take care of you. read more

Zinnia is fantastic! We've eaten in the Tavern a couple of times. Meals have been great, as has been the beverage selection. Went there today to check out the cafe for brunch, sat outside and absolutely loved it! read more

Lovely outdoor setting and tasty salad. Menu didn't have any substantial fare, though.

This is just a perfect place in my view. I've been here a few times with a few friends, and my most recent time was with a large group in the patio and garden. We reserved during a morning slow-ish time so that our group could be accommodated. It was one of the most successful gatherings we've had. A truly lovely setting, welcoming staff, decent food (the options at that time were a little limited but it was just what out group needed), and overall a great gathering spot. We were even able to spread out a little - from the main group on the patio to smaller gatherings by the garden tables - which was nice but probably not an option during busier times. We're making plans now to return! read more

Management is trying really hard. Great setting, stellar staff. Outdoor menu still needs some work though. Good are the drink selection, pecarino cheese with honey, sliders, and muscles--all very yummy. Not so good are the paprika cauliflower or blackened catfish BLT. Could use some more selection. Still, we have great hopes for this place. read more

Great outdoor space & very family friendly. Has lots of seating and meal options, whether you want a breakfast, a brunch, happy hour, or dinner. Their garden area is especially nice. read more

First time, I hear they just opened. We ordered cauliflower, oysters, chx wings, French fries and beef sliders. I don't want to be mean but the best thing we ate were the French fries. Everything was under seasoned, except the cauliflower there was more paprika then cauliflower. Server had the social skills of a middle school boy. Anyway - I give two stars because my wife liked the drinks. Cheers. read more

This place used to be K Toll House and they kept the ambiance familiar. Food is fresh and tasty. The garden area is so peaceful.

They nailed this place! Food, staff, and the space are all five of five. Can't wait to check it out with warm weather!

Food and service good, menu a little limited. Here's the big turn off!! For a party of 2 we were charged 20% service fee? What was that!! I can understand mandatory tipping for large parties but a party of 2!?! And I like how they put it on there as a service fee. If it's listed on your bill as a tip you can change it. If it's on as a service fee you have to legally pay it. Maybe they should post at the door all meals have 20% service fees. Why wouldn't you charge appropriate prices on menu and pay your servers accordingly instead of placing hidden fees?? The sad part is for good service I never tip less than 20% since my kids waited tables through college. This guy was very good but when I'm told what to tip it's not appreciated. Won't return. read more

Great food. Menu changes from season to season, but it's always good. Would recommend eating outside if the weather is good.

The setting is awesome both indoor and outdoor - the food needs some work. I hope they improve the offerings/quality of the food as this place will be awesome if they do! read more

Super friendly staff, amazing food and cocktails are top notch. Fransico makes an amazing bourbon Apple cider.

Went for lunch last weekend and everything was wonderful. Loved the atmosphere outside, it's so cute, relaxing, and pretty. We had a cocktail, iced tea, spicy cauliflower, zucchini fritters, and hush puppies. The hush puppies were our favorite thing -- they were deliciously crisp on the outside and soft and flavorful inside. We liked that many of the items had some salad on the side. Service was friendly and they were helpful with providing a high chair for our baby. We will definitely be back to try other food and look forward to hopefully an expanded menu next year. Hoping that next year they add some coffee and brunch items as well. read more

We sat in the cozy tavern for dinner near the door. Even though it was opened on and off, we appreciated the extra ventilation and not being packed in like sardines! Sangria and Tequila cocktails were perfect and on point! Pitchers of both should be made available for purchase. Fish and chips, shrimp skewers, salad, hushpuppies and serving vinegar with fries was delicious!! Giant cookie dessert with ice cream and berries was also tasty. Roasted chicken needs improvement- it was very dry, and sauce has no flavor. We loved the outdoor and indoor ambiance and potential for more as Zinnia grows into the upstairs space. Looking forward to coming back again!! read more

Awesome outdoor space. The tavern in the basement is small but has a cool vibe. Silver Spring has been needing a new meeting place like this. read more

I just had my high school reunion at Zinnia last weekend and it was a huge success. Can't beat the atmosphere at all. So lovely outside. Everyone was really nice and the service was great. Food is very good as well. Great selection of wines and beers - something for everyone. I'm looking to have the next reunion there for sure. Justin (the manager) was great to work with - especially since I was planning it from all the way across the country. Definitely worth going! I'll be back on my next trip back to Maryland. :) read more

We went to Zinnia for lunch and sat in the garden. Their drinks are fantastic! There is something for everyone, the ambiance is great, service was amazing, good food... this is going to be a regular spot for us to visit. Can't wait for the cafe and restaurant to open! read more

Cozy atmosphere, great beer prices during happy hour, and slow service. Lots of potential! Will visit again!

Went to Zinnia for the first time last night. The space is pretty all the lights and fire pits. We sat outside. We got served pretty quickly but once our order was taken that was when the service kind of ended. Food was ok but the fish in the fish and chips tasted like ammonia and I would have let my sever know had they bothered to come back and check on us! Nobody cleared our plates, no one asked us if we wanted dessert or coffee. We had to wave someone down to get a check. We went home for dessert. Since there are so many great restaurants around the DC area I won't be bothering again which is a shame as we live so close. Also for the pleasure of receiving such shoddy service they had already added in the 20 % gratuity! Dam cheek! Pay your staff instead of chiseling your customers. Really disappointed. read more

I really like Zinnia for many things--great food, inventive menu, lovely and quirky outdoor and tavern areas, etc. but despite the many times we have eaten here, I find certain things just weird and off putting. First, I ordered a large coffee beverage when eating in and it came in a paper to-go cup because they don't have cups large enough. Please, get large enough cups for dine in customers. Second, I asked for a muffin to go with my breakfast after one of the staff commented on how good they were as she stuffed one in her mouth. But no, not at our table, only if I went upstairs to order it in the cafe. Why? When we arrived and asked for a table for breakfast, the hostess looked puzzled and corrected me that it was now brunch and no server until 10(it was 955). I like the added service charge--takes away guesswork and ensures servers get tips, but the self-service elements of eating here aren't positive. Food was good, as usual, but the quirks in service are what always leave me walking away scratching my head. read more

First time here and looking good so far. Hope to have more details re food and beer but a plus for outdoor chill.

too much attitude, not enough service. 2 of us ordered a basic meal with 2 drinks early on a moderatly slow saturday night... waitress seemed perpetually distracted, after finishing the meal we ordered a dessert and one last drink. she brought the dessert but not the drink... after 15 minutes with no drink we gave up and asked for the check. she pulled up a digital receipt of our bill with a mandatory 20% tip on top of things, $110 total... right after explaining she'd forgotten the drink, she offered we could add more tip on top of the 20% but could not go below 20%... amazing... Zinnia seems to have an abundance of attitude, not so much service... you're better going elsewhere. read more

I was excited to try a new restaurant in the neighborhood. I had been to Takoma Bev and very much liked it. I think I went with higher expectations. I didn't realize there were no real entrees on the garden menu. (For a Saturday evening out I prefer a real entree offering.) The outdoor temperature was mid 50s and there were no heaters in the garden. The property is beautiful but I think maybe it would be fine for happy hour or warmer temps. The food was fine (nothing outstanding), service was very nice but the food was delivered super fast--like almost fast food level fast. We were in and out in less than an hour. read more

had a late lunch in the coz bar. the shrimp po'boys were terrific, the service great. love this place.

It's nice to see this particular spot live on after the demise of Mrs K's Toll House, but much work needs to happen before Zinnia could be considered a decent place for a meal. We had cheeseburgers and the crab jalapeño corn fritters, the latter seemingly devoid of any of those three ingredients. $15 should have bought us at least some corn kernels, maybe even some crab? But sadly the fritters consisted of just cornmeal mixed with something faintly fishy smelling. The burgers were made with cheap beef, flavorless - although they were cooked to our specifications. Fries were unremarkable and we left most of them uneaten. The hostess seated my 84 year old mother right next to the perpetually open back door during a chilly 40-something degree evening - cmon, how do you not know better? I could see that some of the young servers were trying, but - this is a very amateur crew completely unschooled in the art of hospitality. I hope they get enough of this kind of feedback to motivate them to do better. The neighborhood deserves better. read more
