I was so sad when Mrs. K's closed but zinnia is everything I missed and more. The outdoor setup is adorable and perfectly spaced out. The small plate menu is perfect for grabbing drinks with friends or relaxing with family. I was nervous there would not be any seating when I saw the full parking lot but we were able to easily grab a table on a Thursday evening. I have been to Mrs. K's Toll house plenty in past for business meetings from 2016- 2019. So this was my first time back to the historical site but this time the name and menu is very different.... They have a different menu for the garden, tavern, main dinning area and no longer hold ppl in the upstairs dinning area which is now filled with couches so it may be a meet and greet spot for parties. The biggest different in all menus is drinks offered. I believe the tavern has the most adventurous drinks and the gardens drinks are geared towards the season... they supposedly have different specials weekly or month depending on chefs and season. I would say a great chill place to go for lite meals because their menu doesn't have that much entrees but appetizers and specials are fulfilling and handheld food. It's the type of restaurant you go to with a group of the gals or guys before a big event or to catch up over lite eat. As well as to have a company event with appetizers... I live the scenery of the garden it's a chill place for a spring event!! So our waiter was attentive for the first 15 minutes after that not sure were he would vanish too because they didn't look like short staff. They had five ppl at the host spot when you first walk in so... anyhow all of our food came out Luke warm except for the gnocchi I didn't want to complain so we left it alone. However, when my daughters triple decker sand which came out Luke warm we had to complain and asks for them to warm it up. They were so kind and decided to give her a whole new plate even tho she had ate all her fries in the first batch so that was nice. I am just a little mad that I seen a review earlier that fritters were Luke warm and I looked at it as maybe it was an off day.. but my fritter were just blah more cornmeal than crab or jalapeño taste and it was Luke warm ... branzino was good but was Luke warm, how ever rice and spinach underneath were not palatable just takes like mush and butter Srry we even for a second had to re look at the menu to see if it was cauliflower rice because it was too sticky but it wasn't. Best meal was the backyard chicken they have there own sauce that taste real good and the lemon ginger sauce on side was bomb make your palate sing notes.. so I ordered two!!!. My family held an event last week at Zinnia in Silver Spring (formerly known as Mrs. K's), and our affair was simply wonderful on every level - leadership, service staff, ambience, music, and food. Justin, the Event Director, could not have done a better job at running a tight operation. He was highly attentive, knowledgeable, and timely. Plus, his warm and engaging personality made every detail shine even more. This included the intimate setting (the Tavern), the on-point staff, the positioning for our speakers presentations as well as the grand piano for our piano player, the Sonos system that played our music genre choice (which happened to be Frank Sinatra and Friends), and the delicious food served to our 61 guests. The quality of the food was exceptional and so, too, was the taste and presentation. We chose the breakfast brunch of 6 items, with several additional platters and bowls from the a la carte menu. Our brunch consisted of perfectly cooked eggs benedict with a choice of salmon or bacon topped with their signature house-made hollandaise sauce; steak & eggs also cooked to perfection; perfectly made and seasoned shrimp and grits; pillowy french toast with a delectable custard texture; build-your-own-breakfast sandwiches for our vegetarians; and scrumptious platters of tempura mushrooms, crab cake sliders, and sweet chili wings, along with bowls of fresh mixed field greens and the sweetest of fruit. We had a great time but I won't be back for afternoon tea (high tea). The food was amazing and the tea and service were good. Zinnia shines; no complaints there. However, $60 per person is a crime (and somehow DC-area restaurants are getting away with it). You simply can't justify a $60 meal (plus tax and tip) that consists of finger foods and tea. Celebrate your special occasion elsewhere or order off Zinnia's other menus. Your $60 will go farther. read more

My husband and I went here for our anniversary tonight. We left incredibly disappointed. Things seemed to start off well. Drinks and starters were pretty good. My husband got the sweet potato gnocchi for his entree. It was terrible - incredibly dense and greasy. It was not edible. When the server came over to check on us, my husband explained that it was really not good and that he could not eat it. He asked it he could get something else and ordered a burger instead. When the burger came out, the server gave a very half-hearted apology about the gnocchi. The burger was unfortunately not much better. Very generic and the bun was completely sopping wet on the bottom. My crab cake sandwich was good. Nothing extraordinary though, and I had to pick some shells out of it. The worst part was when we got the bill the gnocchi was still on there. We were so upset at that point we just paid the bill and left. Absolutely no service recovery after having been served a meal that was essentially not edible. I guess when there's an automatic 20% tip, there's no incentive for service to go above and beyond. I was really hoping that Zinnia could be a neighborhood staple for us, as there are not a lot of options nearby. However, I can't say that we'll be back. I can forgive a bad meal - it happens. However, the complete lack of service standards lost me. read more

Our Friday evening at Zinnia didn't get off to a good start, and it only got worse after that. I'm recovering from a knee injury and had to hobble up several steps to get inside the restaurant, only to find that getting to any of the dining areas involved more stairs. The hostess seemed surprised that I even mentioned this problem, so she called the manager. He tried to be helpful but didn't have much to offer. Perhaps Montgomery County ADA regulations are different from those in the rest of the country; but I suggested he might mention the accessibility issues on their website, and he agreed that was a good idea. We eventually determined that there's an exit that doesn't involve stairs, and I could use that when we left, if I could manage to go down a half flight of stairs. The garden room where we were seated was architecturally interesting but far too brightly lit for dinner. We got seated and I ordered a Negroni. The server brought me a pale brown beverage that tasted vaguely of spices, unlike any Negroni I've ever had. She plunked my sweating drink directly on the table. When I asked for a napkin, she brought a dinner napkin. I said I'd like a cocktail napkin, but she said that they didn't have any. That seemed odd, since they have a bar serving cocktails... I sent the Notanegroni back and got a Martini. I asked for it to be made with Hendrick's, but I sure couldn't taste the rich botanicals for which Hendrick's is known. I had about two sips before our dinner and wine arrived. My husband said the buerre blanc on his swordfish was very good. My whole trout was nicely cooked, but it was stuffed with very bland and unappetizing spaghetti squash and spinach. The polenta surrounding it was barely warm. I asked for Gran Mariner on crushed ice after dinner. The server brought it with the ice overflowing the glass - another wet, dripping mess of a drink. My husband said his coffee was unremarkable but it was hot. He is a kind and patient man, but he said that our server was surly, perfunctory at best. We won't bother with this place again, which is a disappointment because it had seemed to have the potential to be a good restaurant. read more

I love Zinnia! I appreciate how many options they have in terms of ambiance - the restaurant, the cafe, the living room, the upstairs bar, the downstair tavern, the patio, the gardens. The gardens are beautiful and open year round, with fire pits in the winter and umbrellas in the spring/summer! They have good food and drinks; so far, I've gotten the breakfast tacos (chorizo and veggie), the burger & fries, sausage breakfast sando, smoked salmon toast, a variety of drinks (definitely some spiked ciders), and a bunch of decaf oatmilk lattes. All satisfying. It is an awesome, fairly new addition to the neighborhood. It definitely has exceeded my expectations - especially as a replacement for the iconic Mrs. K's Toll House. read more

We have had multiple incredible dining experience at Zinnia. We have been in the garden, tavern, and most recently the dining room. In all three locations, we so appreciate the attention to the environment - the garden is charming, the tavern is cozy, and the dining room is a beautiful mix of elegant and historic. We appreciate the attention to detail - the dishes are beautiful, the container that held my syrup was simple and beautiful, the wall paper is stunning. This is all balanced by the delicious food, wonderful wine, beer and cocktails and friendly servers. I commend Zinnia for its unique character and staying true to the historic building it occupies. So I had some people there tell me not to order the chicken wings they were not good. I ordered the pork sliders, they had a lot of fat in them, so that was not good. The atmosphere was amazing, extremely clean, the waitress and bartenders were extremely friendly. You just want to go and hang out. So awesome!! The staff is so friendly and accommodating. We arrived and we didn't have reservations but we were able to sit outside and then move inside to the tavern once it got cold. Great ambiance--theres the outdoor garden/patio, tavern and also the indoor restaurant. The cocktails and definitely a must-- some of the best I've had in Moco. Definitely get the bar food type items they have if you go here-- the fish and chips were delicious. Would love to try some of their other items next time like the wings or ribs. I'd like to start off by saying I like the previous owners and style and business before now. Since it has been renamed and new management I can say things aren't like they use to be... good... bad... you decide. Although the food was ok, why does it take over two hours to get some steaks, scallops and fish that's ON THE MENU. If you can't serve the food, maybe don't put it on the menu. I can say how annoying it is when you have a normal size party (3-5) people and they automatically charge tip. Think I should be allowed to decide how much to tip my server, vs what you think I should pay them, kinda wild. The music was so loud I could hear my wife speaking to me while sitting next to me, I like music but it seemed like a bit much, not sure how things got such a good review in the paper, must have been a fantastic night when that person came in, tonight they fell very short on mums birthday, I said from a previous visit it was a bad experience, but will try again for mum!!! We ate inside at the restaurant Wednesday night. The new menu full of enticing starters, so we ordered all but two! The fried green tomatoes with the pesto were plate licking good. The clam chowder was layered with flavor, with a hint of spiciness that took it up a notch. There's oysters and then there's broiled bay oysters, stop it. Personally, when it comes to lamb, I don't require much but this tart is special, not only in it's presentation but in the flavors. Yes, we did have an entree, (and there were only 3 of us), the Swordfish Picada. Honestly I was eyeing the ribeye, but I got outvoted. For once I was happy to be on the losing team. The blue crab butter had me looking around to see if I dared pick the plate up. A bonus to our experience was our knowledgeable and vivacious waitress, Sarah. She is not afraid to share her opinion, which was welcomed by all three of us, but she did not smother us. read more

Zinnia needs to figure out who it wants to be when it grows up. The inside dining of the old Mrs. K's Toll House is now partially open, but don't expect much more than the pub grub that is offered in the garden setting. Yes, the garden is wonderful, but are we really limited to pub grub in a restaurant setting? This is not Takoma Beverage in Takoma Park where you would expect that from the newish owners of Zinnia. It is lovely and a wonderful historical setting that now appears to have one of its great dining rooms on the main floor (not the tavern below) turned into a bar. Okay, millennials, have fun! Our experience was mixed. The restaurant environment was nice, we were seated in a room below the bar area, the noise level was fine and the space between tables is really comfortable vs. other places that pack the rooms and you can hear the conversation of the table next to you. The menu option was OK, but felt like it needs to include 1 or 2 more dishes. The steak was very good, the sauce is served on a small pitcher like container and when poured on the meat you can see the smoke come out and you just want to cut a bite and taste it, one rec: include some green/orange vegetables. The crab cake burger was OK, if i bit into the patty alone i could taste the crab, but when eaten with the buns, the flavor got lost, maybe the type of bun used overpowers the crab. The wine menu is good, albeit limited. Now, the beer selection is quite nice. Our so-so experience was at the end, when we were presented with a bill that included an automatic 20% tip and we were just 2, not a group. This isn't mentioned in-the menu or anywhere else in the restaurant, neither did our server mentioned it at anytime. When we asked about it not being mentioned anywhere, the manager came to our table and asked if we weren't counting on leaving a tip. I don't think this was the correct approach to our question. We always leave a tip. And perhaps if the service would have been exceptional, we would have not questioned it -- the service we received was OK but not one that merits 20%. In any case, just put this information in your menu or have the servers mention it as they seat clients. If you look at other reviews, we aren't the first ones to mention it. read more

Was disappointed by the food. I got carryout. If I had been at the restaurant I would have sent it back to the kitchen. The roast chicken was undercooked and pink, much of it inedible. I had to cook the chicken for additional time.in the microwave top try to salvage it. Then the chicken had been packed on top of the sweet potatoes and broccolini, so both were soaked in chicken grease, compromising their flavor. Been here twice this May, both times the food has been amazing and the ambiance is unlike anything in our area. Very romantic and comfortable. Beautiful grounds, twinkling lights, good music. The service was good, very friendly. Cocktails and wine were both very good. I'm obsessed with the seafood chowder, cant wait to come back and order it a 3rd time. Would definitely recommend the steak skewers, the burger, and the sweet potato gnocchi. If the desserts are anything like the rest I can imagine they are delicious! Can't wait to come back. There were hardly any people there at 4:45 when we arrived.  BUT we had to wait at least ​10-15 minutes for our drinks and they did not get my drink right.  The 'pour' was very small and the drink was $14.  The wine was also a very small pour and was $16.  We ordered salad and an entrée and they brought the salad and the entrée together so by the time we ate our salads, the entrée was only luke warm.  Our waiter was sort of a "knuckle-head / a guy type" and when we ordered a second round, that took 15 minutes again and didn't get there until our meal was finished.  THEN they added a 20% tip to the bill -- we never would have given that much for such poor service.  The salads were good and the entrees were meh! read more

I really wanted to like this place. Nice old school charm, and a good location. However, it was a disappointment. The only reservation available was at 8:30, but we arrived at 8:00 expecting to grab a drink in the tavern (which looks very nice). The place was half empty. We were seated immediately and ordered drinks. We then ordered our shared appetizer and entrees. The entrees arrived in less than 10 minutes. The appetizer never appeared. I ordered a glass of wine with my entree, and 15 minutes later I reminded the server about my wine. The bus staff wanted to clear our plates before we finished eating. My wine arrived after I had finished my meal. We were out in under an hour having spent $130. The food was "OK". They add a 20% service charge that you don't learn about until you receive the bill. This place is perfect! First -- it has a beautiful atmosphere -- a historic building, lots of light, and big windows where you can see the gorgeous gardens with flowers everywhere. There are multiple spaces --each distinct depending on your mood -- including a cool downstairs tavern for happy hour with some live music and a gorgeous (dog friendly) and large outdoor area. The service is amazing! Everyone has been so attentive and friendly. The food is delicious. And excellent wifi for working over a cup of coffee while overlooking the gardens. We went to Zinnias for the first time tonight. Seemed to be a younger crowd as compared to us (two women in their 60's.) It was cold even in the Tavern and the door to outside was open for much of the time. The young woman who seated us was pleasant enough, switched us to a table farther away from the door., We were waited on soon, beer selection was good. The tortilla soup was vegetarian, much appreciated and quite tasty. The main menu as sparse at best; my wife ordered the burger, I ordered a spinach salad. The burger and fries were OK, the salad was pitiful. Too much spinach, lentils buried at the bottom and barely there. Beets were flavorful but limited. We ended with a glass,of wine each; my Prosecco was not sweet enough, Sauvignon Blanc fine. The price for this mediocre meal was almost $100 with a 20% gratuity already added in. Outrageous! Finally got a chance to visit this beautiful spot yesterday. The hostess and our server were very friendly and accommodating to my cousin and I. We sat in the beautiful garden which I highly suggest for first timers if the weather allows. We grabbed a coffee before being seated from the cafe and enjoyed it. We ordered the caesar salad, steak sliders, and chicken tenders and fries which were okay - we had hoped for a more flavorful meal which was slightly disappointing considering the cost. However we knew the restaurant was trying out a few things on their menu and will likely come up w a permanent one in the future. Innovative small plates and mains. Not exotic but approachable! Servings are goos size. The wine pours are generous and the wine selection well curated! My hamburger was everything a great burger should be. Excellent meat, great dressings in a tender bun. The fries were perfect. My husband's gnocchi dish was full of fresh veggies and tender gnocchi. The trout tasted fresh, not the least bit fishy with a wonderful stuffing. Even the grandchildren were more than happy.
