We used to be fans of this place, but something has changed in the past couple of years. After moving away from the area a few years ago, we found ourselves in the neighborhood today and stopped by for lunch. We ordered salmon nigiri, spicy scallop nigiri and a sunrise roll. The salmon nigiri was excellent. The sunrise roll was OK. Nothing special about the crab mix on the inside. But it was good enough. Unfortunately the spicy scallop nigiri was not good at all. The scallops were drowning in some kind of hot sauce and it overpowered the scallop. The scallop itself didn't taste fresh. I took one bite of a scallop off the top and left it. I made sure the server knew it did not taste good and that I was not going to eat it. She didn't take it off the bill, which was surprising. Note to owner... If a customer tells you something does not taste good and does not eat it and you take it away, you should remove it from the bill. Update after business commenting: Watch the video again. Amazing experience! Just arrived from LA and my son said he wanted sushi and I was down. This place offers vegan sushi, vegan seafood like shrimp, salmon and delicious miso soup. I tried hot sake which I have never tried and it was very good. I believe it is the house sake. The service was amazing I felt like a special guest. We come here pretty regularly because there's truly something for everyone, no matter the age. My personal favorites are the spicy edamame and the bulgogi, but honestly, everything I've tried has been exceptional. Had yet another incredible meal at Yanagi! I am always blown away by the creativity of their vegan options- as someone who is not vegan, I hope you'll take my word when I tell you how delicious the vegan options are (and I really love eating meat, so that's saying a lot!). I have come here several times, but this time around I lucked out because they had just rolled out a new vegan menu (!!!!) with all the tasty options from before and more. The dishes that I tried: - Agedashi Tofu - first time trying a tofu dish like this and I'm obsessed!! The tofu is lightly toasted (it might be fried but I'm not sure! The outside batter is so light and delicate and not greasy in the slightest). The flavor of the tofu itself is incredible as well- I felt like I could really taste the underlying soy flavor in the best way possible! - Vegetable Gyoza - another delightful surprise! I have had many vegetable gyoza dishes before, so I thought I knew what to expect, but the Yanagi gyoza is different! Crispy green shell + filling with a variety of flavors and textures - Veggie Kimbap - per our hostess Misook's suggestion. Classic kimbap flavors and ingredients, executed perfectly! Reminds me a home-cooked meal, would highly recommend if you are like me and craving some comfort food. - Vegan Spicy Tuna Crunchy Roll - maybe our favorite of the new rolls we tried. Great balance of texture and flavor. There was spice coming from the tuna, sweet and salty coming from the eel sauce, richness from the mayo, freshness from the cucumber, crunch from the crumb topping + cucumber.... so good!! - Tempura Green Beans - can't quite recall the name of this dish, but it was another one of my favorites! The frying batter is so light and airy. Perfectly salted. I would choose this over a french fry or potato chip any day - Veggie Tempura Roll - another dish with yummy tempura! This time it was sweet potato tempura inside the roll. I'm so amazed at how they managed to maintain the crisp inside the roll. - Spicy Vegan Shrimp Monsoon - I always order one of the monsoon rolls whenever I come. That's how much I love this dish! The spicy version is definitely spicy (much spicier than the spicy tuna roll due to there being a pepper in the roll), so I'd recommend it if you're a fan of spice. - Yanagi Roll - this roll is like a mixture of the other rolls and appetizers we tried (with the seaweed, tofu, pickled veggies...), except it has a more tart flavor profile than the others (I think because the others we tried had the eel sauce). I would especially recommend this if you are a big fan of tofu or enjoy a more rice vinegar heavy roll! - Matcha Mochi Ice Cream - perfect way to end our meal! Strong matcha flavor, good quality ice cream, super soft mochi dough (sometimes the grocery store mochi ice cream can be a bit tough). Loved the addition of whipped cream! - Iced Green Tea - highly recommend! Thicker green tea, smooth yet strong flavor (reminds me of matcha), super refreshing. I wish I knew how to make this at home. Ordered take out for valentines night. The order was prepared quickly. The restaurant inside appeared very clean. The food was delicious. I got seaweed salad, salmon kama, salmon sashimi, Philly roll, lollipop roll, and OMG roll. The lollipop roll was my favorite, so refreshing. It's our anniversary and we had decided to try a new sushi spot tonight, but at the last minute, I changed my mind and decided to hit up our old reliable with fingers crossed that it hadn't gone downhill like so many other restaurants we have recently visited. It certainly didn't disappoint. We ordered the albacore garlic roll, the sunrise roll, sexy, what's up and oh you fancy huh rolls as well as the chicken wing appetizer. Everything was DELICIOUS and the what's up was so good my husband and I were fighting over the last piece so we went ahead and ordered another. After learning about their dedicated vegan menu I could not wait to check them out. A place with more than just an avocado roll? Yasss! VEGAN WINGS - served on what looked and tasted like a cassava or yucca stick. These wings had a great taste and a nice consistency - not too chewy. They were served with vegan mayo, which I mixed with wasabi to create a spicy mayo. This made for a yummy topping. I would like to see them offer a vegan buffalo sauce or honey mustard as a dipping sauce for these. 10/10 would order this again. VEGAN CRUNCHY SHRIMP - very good! Like the wings, the texture was spot on and not chewy. It was also served with vegan mayo. The waitress suggested mixing it with sriracha sauce, but she never brought any. I'd like to see a better dipping sauce option being served with this dish. 10/10 would order again though. VEGAN SPICY TUNA ROLL - loved this roll. The vegan tuna was very good and flavorful. No weird aftertaste. 10/10 would order again. VEGAN CRISPY RICE ROLL - This roll isn't a roll at all. It's vegan tuna atop a crispy mini rice patty, topped with a jalapeño slice and a dollop of sriracha. Cute and yummy but why on God's green earth is it $12.99? Is there a happy hour special on this one? If so, I'd order it again, during happy hour. MONSOON ROLL - you can get this roll with or without shrimp. We did without since we were trying other vegan shrimp items. This roll is deep-fried and comes with avocado, asparagus, tofu, and seaweed. I didn't really care for the seaweed, but I really enjoyed the roll. Maybe I'll get it without the seaweed next time. It is messy and fell apart easily... Just an FYI. SHRIMP HANDROLL - Because of the way it's rolled, you cannot split it, so I just scooped out some of the filling to taste it. It was just ok; I would not order this one again. My family was in the mood for Japanese food so decided to give this place a try. First, it is extremely warm inside, to the point it wasn't even comfortable sitting to eat. Sorry, it's 113 degrees outside you have to turn the AC on. We started with some gyoza for appetizers and they were good. The miso soup and side salad was also good. My wife and I split a chicken teriyaki plate and it was not good at all. They cooked the chicken with onions and broccoli. The teriyaki sauce had a coconut undertone flavor which I didn't like. The portion size for the dollar amount was not a good value at all. It was basically half a breast of chicken (if that) thinly sliced and cooked. Even if I was eating this by myself it was not a good value. When I ordered the food I asked the waitress if it was breast meat or dark meat and she said it's chicken. I understand she is from Japan but she speaks English and I asked as simply as possible. The other issue is ventilation, when I left the restaurant I smelled like smoke from the kitchen. I can't recommend this place and I would never go back....ever!!!! read more

This is a very special sushi restaurant. It's family owned and services some of the most fresh, authentic sushi in town. Their yellowtail is actually yellowtail, not the cheap substitute a lot of other places use and try to pass off as yellowtail. I was feeling extra spicy so I tired my friends 911 roll and boy they are not kidding on the heat level! I also loved being able to customize the Philly roll with extra heat for just $1 more. Visiting during happy hour, we decided to order a few sake bombers and everything was delivered quickly. We ended up getting a a crispy spicy tuna and then a crunchy california roll & salmon roll maki combo off of the regular menu. The portion for the crispy spicy tuna was pretty big and overall really tasty. The crunchy california was AMAZING, the crab didn't taste too crabby and all of the flavors worked well. Went here for a late lunch after a brutal shift at work! I was welcomed right away and sat in a cozy booth surrounded by cute and soothing decor. The waitress was very friendly and suggested the perfect roll after I told her I was obsessed with salmon. (The menu had lots of options but my brain was too fried to process, so the help was appreciated.) It's called Salmon Salmon Love and is apparently very popular. I loved the presentation and really enjoyed how there's a variety of flavors or sauces accompanying the salmon: a bit of spicy, some sweet, but also slightly tangy. Afterward, feeling a bit revitalized, I decided try the Bulgogi bowl to finish things off. Turns out someone in the kitchen has a background in Korean cuisine, because the beef was divine! Had that signature savory sweetness with notes of (I think) pear that is typical of good Bulgogi. Long story short, very glad I came, and will be back soon to explore the rest of the menu. read more

An alright sushi spot. Came in and sat at the sushi bar and the sushi chef was just blankly staring over in the distance which was a bit awkward. Shortly after we got the menu and the waitress was friendly. We ordered 2 green teas (they charge by the cup and don't give you a pot of tea). Spring rolls and one Basic Shrimp Tempura roll as well as the sunset speciality roll. The spring rolls were served quickly and were crispy. They tasted decent but didn't have a lot of filling to them. They reminded me of something I've had from Costco in the frozen aisle honestly. Onto the sushi , the shrimp tempura roll wasn't impressive. It's a bigger size sushi roll but it didn't taste or feel very filled and it didn't really have much of the shrimp tempura so it was more like a bigger basic California roll. Next the sunset roll was actually quite tasty and both myself and my partner enjoyed this one. The sunset roll was definitely the highlight of our meal. Overall the food seemed kind of basic for the price. Based on the experience I'd mainly recommend trying their specialty rolls as those seem the most unique and worth getting. Although I wouldn't be opposed to returning here I don't think I'd be rushing back. read more

This place went from best to worst really quick. I'm not sure if the staff/owners have changed but the personal touch we used to experience here has completely disappeared. Was recently served frozen sashimi, then told that it's because of the temperature so it has to be served frozen. Ridiculous. Also on arrival we were given happy hour menus which we ordered from. Then when the check came there were zero happy hour discounts. We were rudely told another lady who interrupted while we were talking to our server that "No you didn't order happy hour items you didn't even have happy hour menus" which is absolutely incorrect. We were then handled by our server who honored the menu prices we were given when we were handed the HH menus . We used to either eat here or get take out once a week totaling no less than $120 before tip. We won't be going back. This kind of service is not welcomed. Not sure if the ownership changed, if it didn't then they for sure forgot their customer service skills. read more
