I am very new to sushi. I love vegetarians rolls but I'm still learning to like fishy tastes. This place was amazing!!!! The sweet potato roll was one of the best I've ever had. I also tried my friend's Vegas roll, crunch roll and sunset roll - they were all so good!!! Nothing tasted fishy. I will be eating here all the time now!!! read more

First experience was great. 2nd experience was not good at all. My gyoza had a bone (or something??) in it that broke my tooth. The sushi is nothing special, and the sauce for the gyoza tasted like just straight soy sauce, but had more flavor the first time somehow? Started with gyoza and popcorn lobster, which were good, good enough we asked if the gyoza were made in house, but no. Next had sushi roll and bulgogi dish, also very good. We were so impressed we tried the spring rolls, which unfortunately were horrible, mushy inside, and wrappers not fully cooked. We advised hostess/wait staff and were told the restaurant could not remove from the bill, would be a waste they could not afford. Their response was, not everyone's tastes are the same. So customer beware, if you don't like uncooked hot appetizer food, do not frequent this restaurant, they will not make it right with the customer. Buy your appetizers at the big box club stores, would taste better. read more

This place is my go to for vegan sushi. They have a vegan menu and each dish is delicious. Missed sushi since becoming plant based and haven't found one in AZ aside from your typical avocado roll or cucumber roll. But the spicy vegan tuna, they have vegan shrimp, vegan chicken and good amount of options. Definitely recommend this place. read more

Did not disappoint!! The vegans got the monsoon shrimp roll and avocado cucumber roll and vegan wings. I forgot to take a picture of the vegan wings but they were delicious! I would recommend the vegan monsoon shrimp roll 100000%!! The non vegans got a rainbow, spider roll and California rolls. We got our food fairly quickly which is a huge plus because we were soo hungry. Great customer service and kind staff. I highly recommend this place. read more

If you're not a true sushi lover like me, then get the scorpion roll! U won't be disappointed! No venom here! This roll oozes flavor! The bonito flakes and eel sauce gives it an extra flavor kick that will keep ur belly happy all the way home! The spicy edamame had a nice kick to it, but the salmon Kama was hard to swallow. Too fishy for my tastebuds! But don't take my fake sushi tastebud to heart. Have at it and see for yourself! Try it out during happy hour from 4:30-6:30 pm for a better deal! I've been here a few times throughout the years and have always loved their food & happy hour specials! When I saw that they had new ownership I was a bit worried, but all my usual favorites tasted exactly the same! The new owners were really nice and friendly too. Ambiance: I am assuming we went during slow hours, around 1:30 pm or so. There was only us and another family. Ambient lighting and dark walls which was nice. Music was great as well. Service: Our host/waitress was nice we very helpful when it came to assisting us with what to order. She constantly check up on us. Food: Gyoza was amazing. Had a slight crisp to I which was great. My wife really looked this place. Great service. Sushi and hot dishes are good. Happy hour menu is decent. We always leave with a full stomach having over ordered due the different dishes we wanted. They serve Ikura. To me, a Sushi restaurant that does not serve Ikura is not legit. Some I had been to in the valley do not even know what it is. read more

Came here for lunch again, and this will be the last time. I was *REALLY* hoping that they'd improve their chirashi, but no change has been been made. It's a box stuffed to the top with rice and topped with two anemic slices of salmon, whitefish, tuna, shrimp, yellowtail, and krab. There's a dollop of shredded daikon, and a few slices of pickled cucumbers. And that's it. Their sashimi is fine. It's pretty standard, but nothing jumped out and grabbed my by the ears like it would before sometimes. The real kicker was their uni. If you look at my previous reviews I was raving about their uni, but now it's pretty much just your standard dollop of sea urchin gonads. And for some bizarre reason they sprinkled salt on it. This place is fine. You won't have a bad meal here, and that's probably fine for most folks. However, if you're looking for something exceptional, you're probably going to be disappointed, and that's really too bad. Ah well, c'est la vie I suppose. read more

We ended up trying Yanagi Sushi last night after seeing their Yelp rating and we were not disappointed! For checking in we got a ton of amazing edamame, and it didn't take long for us both to realize that the Maki Combo is the way to go. Three rolls for $15~ is an amazing value, and we both definitely got our money's worth. The Pork Gyoza is a must-have in my opinion. The Salmon Roll, Philly Roll, and the Crunchy Roll were all amazing, but my girlfriend and I both thought that the Spicy Yellowtail Roll that I got was a little on the fishy side, so I can't recommend that one in particular. They also have some Soju cocktails on the list that sound amazing, and I definitely plan to come back and try some of those on a night where I'm not expected to be working the next morning. Today was my son's 18th birthday and he wanted to go to Sushiya, and when we got there (at 4:15) we were informed that they were doing takeout only. Thanks pandemic/curfew. So we went to Osaka. They said 90 minute wait. Okay, put me on the list. My GF finds Yanagi on Yelp and calls. Come on in they say, no waiting. Excellent. (On our way there Osaka called and said the table was ready. Really? 15 minutes later? If you told me 30 minutes or less we would have waited. Your loss) The service was great and very polite and attentive. The good was excellent, we had sashimi, sushi, tempura, even the chicken teriyaki kids meals were good. Very reasonable prices for the quality and portions. We will be back! read more

Went back and was so surprised that the portions were small and they blew it with my dragon roll. They forgot the shrimp but I ate it and then told them. I don't send anything back cause I think it's more rude than a poor yelp review. The server went to the chef and he stated it was rolled right and it was there. If so- where was the tail on my plate? The Ca roll was a bit fishy. Hubbys rolls were small too. More like grocery store sushi and not worth 18.00 a roll. Sorry Yanagi you lost me. We probably won't return because of this. read more

I have never had a bad experience here. The staff are always super friendly and the food is always amazing. They have happy hour everyday and they have happy hour all day long on Thursdays which is generally when we go. I'm a vegetarian and they offer a lot of amazing vegetarian options!! The prices are great whether happy hour or not. Your drink is never empty and food comes out fast. Highly recommend you check it out! read more

Sushi was prepared with bare hands. Gross. Also the roll only had 5 pieces for $15. And it was just ok. But they lost me at the bare hands. And no apology was given. Pretty sure it's legally required to use gloves when handling ready to eat food read more

When we went they also had discounted beer, I think this is personal preference but usually ordering a beer fills me up and I end up eating less than what I'm paying for when it comes to AYCE. If you craving AYCE this should satisfy the craving if you're strategic and stick to the rolls unless you have a large party then ordering appetizer's may not fill you up as much.

The menu was 5 courses prix fixe designed by the head chef for this group. The restaurant was closed as a private event. Service was excellent, the food was also so delicious, and cocktails were great too. Shimogamo is one of the few Japanese restaurants in the valley that remind me of eating Japanese food in Japan. It's well prepared, fresh, and high quality. The cocktails are creative and nods to Japan with delicate flavors and unique ingredients. Our courses were: started with the truffle amberjack which is a flavor bomb, very rich and truffle forward. Which I don't always enjoy but when paired with amberjack, it was great. 2nd course was a nigiri plate- 4 choices: sea bream (which I love), a fancy type salmon, toro, and couple pieces of the wagyu roll. Next onto a darn near perfect crab croquet that was creamy with big pieces of crab and perfectly fried, and main course was K4 ranch Wagyu from Prescott. Very buttery and delicious. We ended with a matcha basque cheesecake. The chefs talked about the food, answered questions, and talked about their background. Third time visiting and there was a new expanded vegan menu! Genuinely some of the best vegan appetizers and sushi rolls I've ever had. The vegan gyoza were fried to perfection--the outside was crunchy and the inside was warm and soft. Their tempura batter was light, crispy, and perfectly salted. My favorite rolls were the Vegan Spicy Shrimp Monsoon roll and the Vegan Spicy Tuna Crunchy roll, both of which combined beautiful creamy flavors with a crispy bite and a spicy kick. We finished our meal with matcha mochi ice cream, which was not only gorgeous to look at but had a wonderful soft mochi texture. Also, the staff is so kind and attentive; my friend and I felt spoiled the whole time we were there. They're sure to bring you any additional utensils you need as well (we needed a knife to split something between us). The staff is REALLY nice, and what I love about it is that it is family owned. The place is fairly new so and so far has kept everything clean and fresh in there, and the atmosphere is good. The Tuna Love is my favorite!! I love their miso sauce, and the first time we went we asked about it, and the owner gave us a friendly explanation on what it was. We ordered the Tuna Love which has miso and chili sauce on it, and now we get it every time. So don't be afraid to ask questions. The miso soup is also really good, and the fish tastes really fresh. The one saving grace to this place is that the sushi was CHEAP compared to anything I've seen in the Phoenix/Mesa area. If cheap sushi is what you are looking for, you will find it here! But you pay for what you get. Overall, the sushi was not my favorite, and the atmosphere had some issues that made the experience a bit strange. Probably not a place I'd go out of my way to visit again.

Zugoi in Mesa offers a huge, budget-friendly menu with generous portions, and the food is decent. The only downsides I would say for my visit were the slightly is the presentation. It didn't look messy, but it just lack the "wow" factor. The sushi rice was okay on all my rolls I ordered. Overall, it's still a reliable and calm spot. Be sure to try the Happy Hour item (listed on the ordering form).
