However, we quickly realized that the every item was well worth the price! Our waiter was very patient and explained every what every dish we had questions about was made of and how it tasted. He even allowed us to taste the mole before ordered since none of us have tried mole before! We also got habanero sauce on the side which was a great dip/topping for every dish we got! After traveling to Oaxaca, my perception of "Mexican" cuisine changed for the better! I never thought I would find a memela in Houston, but when I saw that we had a fine-dining Oaxacan restaurant beautifully placed in Discovery Green, I could not wait to give it a try. Xochi is located inside the Marriot and offers valet parking. It is a chic and modern restaurant, typical of upscale hotel restaurants. Once we were seated at our table, our waiter was completely dry and detached. When I asked him what sides came with the fish of the day, he responded "vegetables." Since I obviously wanted a detailed response, I asked what vegetables, in which he got irritated. As a waiter of a fine-dining restaurant, you should be able to describe a dish vividly rather than acting disinterested in the menu. Needless to say, I opted out of that item. I ordered the memela which came with roasted pork, refritos, crema, queso fresco, and a few dollops of a tangy tomatillo-avocado sauce- absolutely delish! I also ordered the tiradito which came with thinly sliced, extremely flavorful chiles with avocado mousse- a visually stunning dish. Our order of the pulpo arrived slightly undercooked in my opinion, however the thickness of the tentacles was noteworthy. Just want to point out that our waiter did not check on us once during this experience which led me to ask one of the bus boys for a dessert menu. I ordered the horchata mousse cake which was velvety and artfully crafted. Despite the exceptional quality of food, the overall experience was ruined by the less than subpar service. Our waiter treated us as a burden from the moment we sat down. After I left, I realized that I didn't ask about parking. The gentleman at the host booth politely informed me that I had to go to my waiter. I walked back towards him and he rudely said you are supposed to pay at the table. How am I supposed to know that? The fact that I didn't have to leave the hotel to dine this well was the biggest plus. Houston, downtown is not a nice place for an evening stroll. So, Xochi hit the spot. The food was fresh, I had some type of enchilada, with some chewy tortillas and sala. The cuisine is from a specific region in Mexico and the menu is not the typical Mexico's greatest hits fare. That I liked. Great bartenders and drinks as well. And, their dessert is off the hook. Typically, I don't have the room for any dessert after Mexican food. But, Xochi is lighter, fresher and more pleasant of a dining experience than your typical joint. So, if you find yourself in downtown Houston and are pining for some fresh Mexican fare, this is a great place to be. read more

Really nice place in downtown Houston. Came here on Friday night with some friends to celebrate my birthday. We made reservation few weeks in advance since our group was pretty large. I don't live in Houston, so just visiting, and they definitely have a different Mexican cuisine than you would regularly find in the rest of the US. Definitely upscale Mexican food with unique flavors and unique dishes. Service was amazing, definitely very attentive and friendly. They had vegan menu since one of the guests was vegan. They have a whole separate vegan menu which is very impressive. Food was outstanding, we tried different dishes and shared a lot. Everything was great. I would warn that portions are large aka Texas style. So don't order like you are in NYC. Guacamole wasn't on the menu but they said they can make it for us and it was amazing. As a huge fan of Hugo's and Caracol, I have had Xochi on my radar for a while. I was quite excited to have a work meeting scheduled there, but then, unfortunately, was quite disappointed in the food and service during our meeting. Part of the disappointment could have been in the menu selection. I have read the Houston Restaurants Week (HRW) menus and know the variety that they have for vegetarians (like taquitos de papa and quilites and cauliflower enchiladas with mole de amarillo) and pescatarians (like the fresh catch of the day) and the choices look amazing. I also know how they can customize menus as the chef is so creative. The appetizers were good. The ceviche al tuna was fresh. Could have used more than one large round chip as it was being shared family style. The chicken was good. Chef Hugo Ortega is the Master of Mole and I could have scooped up the mole with a spoon. So delicious. If you were a vegetarian, you were out of luck as no other appetizer options were available. For dinner, I asked the waiter for his recommendation between the seafood/fish enchilada and the memelas de vegetales as the other options all had beef, pork or shellfish. Even the poultry choice was wrapped in bacon. Vegetarian enchiladas were not an option. The waiter highly recommended the memela. The memelas de vegetales tasted like two cold thick corn/masa pancakes covered with an assortment of cold vegetables, like mushrooms, zucchini and corn, with crema and queso fresca covered with a salsa albanil. It seemed more like a salad than an entree and several my vegetarian colleagues were surprised that this was literally the only vegetarian option on the entire menu for the evening other than the black beans, rice and peas and the desserts. Ordered a Mexican hot chocolate which was delicious (although it took an hour to get), they forgot one of my colleague's meals (which had to be reordered) and I took the chocolate tres leches to go. The acoustics in the banquet room were poor. You could hear the noise from the restaurant and as the microphone was not working, it was impossible to hear the speakers during their presentations. Parking is available for $12. Free street parking is available if you are lucky to find a spot near Discovery Green. Would I come back? To Hugo's or Caracol, definitely. To Xochi, I'm not so sure. Hopefully, it was just an off night, but I would not recommend the banquet room at Xochi for a work meeting where you had to be able to hear multiple speakers. read more

The Sunday brunch was so good, I ate once and immediately made reservations again two weeks later. For someone that has only eaten mostly Tex-Mex, this was a dream come true for me as I got to try so many Mexican cuisines for the first time. Loved all the vegetable options such as squash and cactus! I wasn't a huge fan of the meats, a lot of which were chicken, and some of the pork were a bit dry, but man did the food pay for itself with the oysters, guac, and all the expensive berries at the end for dessert. Stopped in here for lunch after our Houston Hyrox race. This was my first time at a traditional oaxacan restaurant. This was a great first experience we got great service and even though this wasn't what I was used to as far as Mexican it was still a great culinary experience. Went here for brunch and my dish featured sunny side eggs, chorizo, and some greens. The dish was great and all the ingredients went super well together. I've been frequenting Xochi since it first opened and it remains one of the spots I recommend anyone new to Houston to try. Parking / Location The restaurant is attached to the Marriot Marquis. There is some street parking around, but it is very dependent on when you visit. Generally speaking I would not bank on that unless you're willing to walk a good distance. There is also valet parking available at the door or at Marriot Marquis for $11 (unfortunately they raised the price as it used to be $8). Food / Drink We've tried many appetizers and generally speaking any of the crudos will be good albeit sometimes a bit too citrusy. The queso de rancho is quite good, don't be scared of the insects haha. Or give the Molotes de Xoxocotlan a try. For main dishes, we've had throughout multiple visits some that stood out were the Barbacoa de res de Zaachila, Bistec con mole de chicatana, and Tlayuda de res. The wood fired oysters (Ostiones de Lujo) are a good. In our most recent visit we tried the Codorniz and the Callo de Hacha. I'd say they were both ok, neither really wow'd us. The Callo de Hacha features the mole verde, but it isn't the most forward flavoring. That said the scallops were cooked perfectly and were delicious. The quail was underwhelming in my opinion and there's some other spots in Houston that have better takes on how to serve this type of bird. However, their standout is the mole (obviously, it's Oaxacan based food). Thus, most the dishes with alot of mole sauce, including some of above mentioned dishes, is going to be a pretty good bet because this is what it's all about. If you're looking to give each a try, they have a tasting plate, which features four of the seven. Drinks are always fantastic here. While some are better than others, you really can't go wrong with what you pick. I forget which margarita it is, but they will shake it tableside it that's your thing. For desert the cholcate and churro is always a great option, particularly in the colder months of Houston. Service Generally the servers are quite attentive and helpful if you're having a difficult time making a decision. There have been a couple occasions where it's a bit slow in getting your dishes. This was the case on our most recent visit, but they were absolutely slammed too. We still managed to make it out in a little over 1.5 hours. Cost The pricing is very varied so it depends what you're willing to spend. There are some great dishes at each price point. Overall Whether you live in Houaton or it's surrounding areas, or maybe you're just visiting, give this place a try! read more

Xochi's Sunday brunch buffet is a great way to treat yourself. There's delicious food, great service, and you get to try items you probably never think to order from the menu. Our party of three made reservations for 10 one Sunday and we ended up being a little early. We were let in and hung out in the front area for a few minutes while they set up. There is plenty of indoor seating and a few smaller tables for outdoor seating on their patio. We ended up with a table right next to the food. There is a long table set up with appetizers and mains and then anothet section dedicated to desserts. I got one of almost everything and these were the items I remember most. Green sauce and guacamole: holy guacamole these were good! Incredible refreshing flavors and I ended up topping lots of items with these sauces. There was also a red sauce but for me, the greens stole the show. Roasted potatoes: very well seasoned, roasted perfectly for a slightly crispy exterior and soft interior, and cut up to a perfect bite sized portion. Did I think going in that the humble roasted potato would end up being one of my favorite items? Absolutely not. Arepas: filled with chicken, cheese, and veggies, this one is a stomach filler. The dough was a little crispy and was sturdy enough to hold all the fillings in. Chicken was moist and delicious. Of course, I alternated bites by topping it with green sauce and guac. Tamales: moist and packed with flavor. It's a tamale. Chicken enchiladas: these were one of my least favorite items. The flavors didn't all come together and the forn tortilla wasn't quite soft enough. A rare miss for me. Brisket with mole sauce: turns out I don't like mole sauce. But tge brisket was moist and yummy. Huevos rancheros: another miss for me only because the eggs looked and tasted very rubbery. The flavors were there but I had a hard time getting past the eggs. Dessert winners: mini cherry hand pies, chocolate cookie, chocolate cheesecake, macarons, macaroons, and churros. I went back for seconds. And thirds. Found this restaurant on accident after walking around downtown. I was looking for somewhere to get a drink and was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance. Although it is not on their menu, I ordered a French 75 and my partner asked for a spicy margarita mocktail. The bartender made the mocktail look so pretty, it looked like a regular spicy margarita and it tasted good. My drink was also good. While we were there we decided to get an appetizer so we had the guacamole and tostadas which we enjoyed. We had a great experience. Our server was very attentive and knew the menu well. I ordered the Pesado (which was grouper that night). It was so delicious, the fish portion was generous, the outside was crisp and the inside was tender and juicy. The sauce... don't even know how to explain how good it was. My husband had the enchiladas (they were pork the night we were there). They were so tasty! I only wish we were hungrier the night we went because I would have like to tried an appetizer or dessert. I could go through every detail of each dish we had, but the bottom line is that you cannot go wrong here. The mole is divine -- no matter the one you choose -- and the meats are melty and cooked/seasoned to perfection. The garnishes are bright and expertly pulled off. The cacao (dessert) is not only fun, but it is a uniquely delicious ending. Bravo! Hugo Ortega is an innovator, and this menu reflects that. His team is obviously trained very well, though I felt a little rushed toward the end of my experience here. Also, I'm a beer guy at heart, and I wish that menu could be expanded a little. I have been wanting to try more Oaxacan foods and different moles. Xochi caught my eye while I was in Houston for work. Overall, I enjoyed my solo dinner here. The food was pretty good, especially their signature chocolate dessert. The atmosphere was relaxing and I was able to people watch from my corner. The outdoor patio looks comfortable for a nice day. Service was good. Robolano 3/5 Sea bass ceviche. Beautifully plated but underwhelming in taste for me. The raw fish was fresh, but I thought something was missing, flavor wise, in the ceviche--a bit more heat would have been perfect to balance the dish. There were jalapeños as part of the sauce on the plate but not within the ceviche. The dish could be elevated by mixing in some diced jalapeño. The slices of cucumber wrapping around the ceviche was also a missed opportunity to my mind. A little bit of pickling would have been great. Mole selection 4/5 I read that Xochi is known for its moles so I decided to sample four. I am still new to the world of moles and on my first taste, none of the four stood out. But in grew on me. By the end, I particularly enjoyed the red spicy sauce and the two black sauces (one was more bitter and had dark chocolate notes, while the other one had a slight kick). The yellow sauce was my least favorite and the only one I didn't finish. Cacao Highlight of my meal and a dream for any chocolate lover. Getting to try this was so special given I learned that Xochi sources their chocolate from Oaxaca. Not only is the dessert a piece of art--the realistically looking cacao pod (I thought it was the actual pod) is made with white chocolate and is edible--the "chocolate textures" and flavors inside and on the plate were divine. There was a rich dark chocolate sauce, chocolate soil, chocolate cake, what tasted like Belgium chocolate ice cream, chocolate mousse, "passion fruit chocolate cloud," chocolate crunch, and a passion fruit curd. I loved the different flavors of tanginess, sweet, and bitterness. I tried them individually and then started pairing the textures and flavors. I was there last night for a party, and while the food was authentic and great there were and service was excellent. I am in a wheelchair at the moment, and there were some accessibility issues. There is no ramp on the curb from valet parking, but the valets helped me. The main issue I had was with the restrooms. they had chairs stacked up by the entrance to the facilities making it difficult to gain entry. The Handicap stall is too small for a chair to navigate easily and there is no auto-open on the restroom door and the stall was not tidy or clean. read more

I highly recommend bringing out of town guests here to showcase a great, unique Houston restaurant. We ordered quite a few things to try. My favorite was definitely the barbacoa de res. It was so flavorful and a great portion for the price. I loved the various elements included on the plate- the little masa dumpling, the mole and the salsa, and the blue corn tortillas! I liked the guacamole with tostadas. The tostadas were so interesting and tasty! The cauliflower was also nice. It had all kinds of cauliflower, not just the plain white ones. I also recommend the molotes de xoxocotlan. I loved the chorizo filling and the corn. For dessert - get everything to try!! I enjoyed the cacao. It was a giant white chocolate pod filled with more chocolate. Such a fun dessert. The sorbets are good. The helado de elote is kind of a weird texture. It was my least favorite thing. One of the best experiences I've had dining in Houston dt. From service to food to value. Xochi is rare in that you're not paying that much of a premium; I do think the food is well worth. Valet parking was $12 and included in the restaurant bill, which was very convenient. You can tip drivers in cash or venmo/zelle. Interior is spacious and it doesn't feel crowded. We had a reservation and were seated immediately by Rafael, who was super helpful & knew everything about the ordered dishes. Food came out fast and empty dishes were cleared away quickly - we were in and out in 1 hr. Mole tasting - comes out with 4 beautiful moles. My favorite was the fig based one. After we finished the tlayudas, they brought out extra tostadas & fresh soft tortillas without asking. Rafael really took care of us Callo de Hacha - Really tender scallops, but don't order this alone unless you have the appetite of an ant. Although the scallops are sizable, this won't make you full. Pato Crujiente - best value imo, good duck portion with side of fresh salsa verde. Absolutely no kick to the salsa verde - just a good fresh addition to the duck. Good ratio of duck fat to meat, tender, and flavor is also incredible. Friday special - we had the chilean sea bass on risotto. Really well done sea bass - fish was tender and flavor was mild but good. Cacao - beautiful presentation. Desserts inside the shell are diverse - I tasted chocolate ice creams, butter pecan ganaches (?) and passion fruit jellies. Great break in the monotony of all-chocolate plate. Only complaint about this is I'm not a fan of eating chocolate straight up, and that's the entire shell. I always feel bad leaving some on the plate. However the pastry chefs do a beautiful job & if you're looking for a dining experience (emphasis on the experience), definitely recommend this For a group of 4 we spent $260 including parking fees. I'd come back for both dining and the experience, which is always a good reflection. I can't speak on authenticity but I'm glad Oaxaca and their food is represented prominently in Houston. Impromptu Houston ice cream crawl - honorary stop This is a review for happy hour and dessert - was in Houston solo for a conference and Xochi came highly recommended. As a solo traveler I like to eat at the bar, and Xochi was in a convenient location and had some happy hour deals! Happy hour: I had a margarita and the molotes. At first I was a little nervous about ordering dishes as I have a nut allergy which is not great for mole-heavy establishments, but the bartender was super nice, noted most things could be substituted, and pointed out what to avoid. The margarita was well balanced and strong, and the molotes' fried texture worked well with the sauce and crema. Think like a hush puppy, but with chorizo mixed in. And it came garnished with some fried crickets! They didn't taste like much, but added a good crunch. By that point I was a bit full and wanted to try some other spots, so I vowed to return another time for dessert. The following evening I came back for dessert at the bar. I wish I could have tried the cacao ($20) but I didn't think I could finish it on my own. Instead I opted for the helado de Elote ($13), which was an ode to corn in a dessert. And I love love love corn. The dessert was a mix of shortbread like crumbles over a blue corn custard or pudding, corn frozen custard/ice cream in the shape of baby corn, and a scoop of bourbon ice cream. It was so so good. Overall I'm so happy to have enjoyed food at Xochi and wish I could go back with friends to try more (especially drinks and dessert)! read more

Cocktail selection is great and they're all beautiful. For food, i had the enmoladas, which is tortillas folded with plantains and mole sauce along with cheese, delicious meat, and rice. It was so filling and savory but not overly salty at all. My friend got the puerco, which is kind of like chorizo pizza on a large tortilla. It was absolutely delicious as well. I came here for Houston Restaurant Week. I got the Menu de Mezcal and the cocktail pairing and my friend got the Menu Clasico and the wine pairing. Both were DELICIOUS. The Taquitos Dorados were amazing, they really took something as simple as a taquito and elevated it. The Cachetes de Res were also amazing. I normally don't eat beef but I made an exception for restaurant week, which was worth it. The Cafe y Cigarros and Ser-Esa Sour were my favorite cocktails. The decor in the restaurant was super cool and the service was amazing. All of the waiters were very knowledgeable about the HRW menu and all of the cocktails. Have been here multiple times on several occasions for years and always enjoy the cuisine, ambiance and hospitality. Every dish is amazing and unique, inventive and bursting with flavor. I love the omelette station which can appear anytime for brunch. My favorites for the brunch are the ceviches, guacamole, taquitos, the barbacoa is excellent and some of the desserts are stellar. They have rotating dishes every time from roasted mushroom medley to different mole entrees. The elote panna cotta is divine as are the tres leches cheesecake, hot cocoa, and brown maple sugar cookie. The churros are a favorite and the flan coffee was nice but more caramel-y than coffee tasting. Reservations are a must and street parking is free on Sundays. read more

Typically go for lunch. The Octopus is great. Would recommend sharing dishes to get a taste of more dishes. Waiters are good on making recommendations. read more
