I've been hesitant to come to Balboa Surf Club because the menu always seemed too random. There are very few times where a place exceeds my expectations, and Balboa did. The decor was a combo of old money Houston and mid-century mod. Lots of plants, lots of wood. Very dim. Service was slow but attentive and friendly. There are no mocktails on the drink menu, but they have a few on deck. They can also custom make you one. My husband ordered a Paloma and stated that it was very strong. For an app, we got the coconut shrimp. 10/10 -- well fried, coconut forward. Fun and easy bites. We also got the salmon roll and thought it was refreshing. Light umami, sauce was not needed. For our mains, we got the cheeseburger and redfish. My husband does not love seafood, but he devoured the redfish. It was flaky, buttery, with lots of crab. The burger was ok -- it reminded me of an elevated Big Mac. It was not a bad burger, but it wasn't that melty, gooey, buttery number some of us love. Get the lemon meringue. She is zesty, she is thick, she is tall. My husband, toddler, and I shared it and were stuffed. Balboa is a place I would take someone who likes seafood and good vibes.
The fish tacos were great, they came with a fresh chili like sauce and served on two warm corn tortillas. The service at this place was phenomenal, staff was attentive, and everything was brought out in a timely manner. I sat inside, however, the outside seating looked lovely as it had plenty of plants around and I enjoy the outdoors. I will for sure have to come back to try the outside seating.
Magnificent! I'm sad that it took me so long to find this restaurant! For starters, everything about this restaurant is high end and gorgeous and the attention to detail is impressive. The entrance is beautiful and the staff was very welcoming and friendly. We had a reservation and were seated promptly, but I noticed the restaurant filling quickly around noon so you should definitely make a reservation. Our server was upbeat and knowledgeable and gave us his recommendations which I greatly appreciated. The coconut shrimp batter was tasty and crispy and the shrimp was perfectly fried. I ordered the crab cake based on my yelp research and the servers recommendation. The crab cake was the best one I've ever had. The amount of crab was generous and the seasoning was outstanding. The freshness and quality was very obvious and it was served with crispy fries that was an outstanding pairing. My diagnosis: gorgeous restaurant with outstanding seafood; the crab cake is a must order!
Tucked into a discreet corner of the Post Oak Plaza opposite of its sister restaurant (Il Bracco), Balboa Surf Club serves mostly seafood (but you'll find steak, chicken, and burgers on the menu) and even sushi for both lunch and dinner. The interior is energetic but refined, with one side brighter with the bar bathed with natural sunlight and the other side feeling more intimate and darker. They have comfy booths for seating, making it feel a bit like a modernized steakhouse. Everything looks clean and refined; even the outside waiting area and the restrooms match the aesthetics! The food was fresh and delicious! Everything is made in house, from the burger buns to all the desserts-- pretty impressive~ Our top picks were the stone crab claws and the tuna frites + chocolate cream pie for dessert! ** Nigiri platter (4/5): this came with tuna, salmon, and scallop which was super creamy. A little let down that the salmon was served more in a gunkan maki form (battleship style like the usual spicy chopped scallop) than a true nigiri. But everything was fresh and still enjoyable~ ** Rainbow roll (4/5): your usual California roll but topped with tuna, salmon, and yellowtail + some heat with the slices of jalapeño and tanginess. Definitely creamy, but not overly mayo-y tasting. Happy we tried it~ ** Sashimi salad (5/5): loved the chopped Napa salad and that home sesame vinaigrette! The yellowtail, tuna, and salmon sashimi slices were so beautifully presented and also super tasty drizzled with oil. ** Savoy spinach (5/5): while very scrumptious, this was definitely not the healthiest option. It was sautéed and topped with cheese. I would order the grilled broccolini for a healthier veggie option next time! ** Crab and corn chowder (5/5): very creamy without tasting like straight up cheese with that lovely corn flavor + pieces of corn and bites of jalapeño to kick it up a notch. Really enjoyed this comforting cup as it was also served piping hot! ** Stone crab claws (5/5): Haven't seen many places with crab claws on the menu, and we were pleased with these. They were large sized (compared to the colossal sized ones at the well known establishment in Miami)-- still large-and-in-charge and come pre-cracked served on ice with hand towels. Fresh and sweet! ** Tuna frites (5/5): the tuna was nicely seared with a beautiful amber interior. There was a crust of creole seasoning, so it had an extra bit of heat and was a tad salty for me, so next time I might ask if they're able to omit it. Definitely tasted fresh-- one of the best seared tunas I've had in the city :D And the shoe string fries were well seasoned, still fluffy in the middle, and addicting (and I'm usually not a fan!). Would totally order again! ** Chocolate cream pie (5/5): was not expecting coffee in the crust but was so happy to taste it! It was like an espresso chocolate cookie crust with thick, creamy milk chocolate filling topped with some whipped cream. Not like the usual jiggly pudding filling. Totally a dream! I was already full but devoured this. As a sweet tooth, I could come back and happily eat 3 of these for dinner. Service was friendly-- our waitress, Crystal, was bubbly and enthusiastic, and the entire wait staff worked as a team to clear the table, refill our glasses, and bring out the food. Overall, we had a great date night! The food was tasty and fresh, and now we know where to get our stone crab fix! The dress code is business casual, and there was a lot of fun dresses and relaxed but refined attire to match the ambiance :D Come early or make a reservation as it gets busy!
Went in for a work lunch. Ordered the salmon and subbed the Napa salad with a Caesar salad. Both the salad and salmon were delicious! The salmon was cooked perfectly, easy to slice into with just a fork and had some crispy corners on top. The servers stayed on top of water refills and were friendly. It had a nice atmosphere and would probably be really nice at night. A funny note: I love to people watch and all the servers are constantly walking around, like they make practical circles around the place I got a tiny bit motion sickness haha! We were too full for dessert but our server brought my boss a complimentary cookie because she heard it was her going away lunch. Very thoughtful of her!
I was really excited for this place, has good reviews and heard good things about it but I honestly wasn't that impressed. The ambiance is great, love the environment. Great place to grab drinks with friends or a date night dinner. Service was good. The dessert was so good! I did not like the rolls we got, wondering if the other rolls are better... it just didn't have a good flavor to me. It was too much going on in one roll. The cheeseburger was ok, I like needed a sauce to keep eating it... the Dr Pepper in a bottle was cool! Maybe we need to try different things next time...
I came here to celebrate my birthday with my girlfriends, and it was a bit disappointing to find out they don't offer any dessert to celebrate special occasions. Honestly, what's the point of selecting an occasion when making a reservation if nothing is included? Thankfully, our server was kind enough to offer us a dessert, which we really appreciated. Pretty ambiance and great service, but slightly salty food for my taste. Appreciate our server for making my birthday a little sweeter!
My parents always love coming to Balboa, so I was excited to finally try it out with them for New Years Eve celebrations, and boy was it amazing! The interior is beautiful with dim and romantic lighting, making it also perfect for a date night. We had reservations for 8 PM, but our table wasn't ready until 8:20, understandable though considering it was NYE. We just waited at the bar and grabbed a drink. There was also a firepit with seating available outside to wait at. We shared the Moroccan salad and coconut shrimp. Wow was the salad delicious! The coconut shrimp wasn't anything special in my opinion. For mains, my parents ordered the filet and crab cake, and I ordered the salmon roll. Sides included fries and mashed potatoes. Honestly, everything tasted DIVINE. My dad doesn't even like sushi and raw fish, but he actually really enjoyed my salmon roll (once I convinced him to try it)! We got the quatre leches for dessert, which was good but nothing memorable. Service was quick, and our server was so kind. There's plenty of lot parking available, along with complimentary valet. Overall, I loved my first visit at Balboa and totally understand why it's a staple spot for my parents. I would definitely come back again!
I love the Surf Club. This is a beautiful restaurant. Nicer than most high end restaurants. It is not just a pretty face. The food is consistently very good to excellent as is the service. I like the seafood here so stick to fish and shellfish. They have American dishes and Japanese inspired rolls and Sashimi. It
service here is always pleasant, and attentive. The atmosphere of this restaurant is so intimate and classy. The food is amazing and the drinks are strong. I loved the crab cake and the red fish was flavorful and fresh. Parking is easy, own parking lot and valet offered. The dessert was delicious. Definitely a great date night spot. Cannot wait to come back.
Came here for a girls night on Saturday and our server was amazing! My girlfriends got mocktails and I had the cocktail with vodka, lemon and mint and that was okay. For dinner my girlfriends got the red fish and I got the chicken sandwich and my chicken sandwich was amazing! The place was dimly lit so the ambiance was amazing! Overall a 10/10
Balboa Surf Club is a beautiful establishment, the ambiance is cool and the service is top tier. I've been on several occasions ranging from weekday business lunches to happy hour and dinner service. When I'm not entertaining clients I love to sit at the bar, the bartenders alternate bar shifts and although I have my favorites (positive + upbeat + conversation) I've never had a bad experience. You can tell service is top of mind for the staff here and although their food isn't the best in my opinion, I continue to patronize the business for their warm, welcoming and attentive staff.
Wow this place really blew me away. It's a near perfect spot for a business lunch or dinner (or if you're willing to splurge with your own money for a good meal or a hot date). I wasn't sure what to expect based on the name of the restaurant, but essentially their seafood options are spectacular. And it feels like an exclusive club because the decor and service are both very much high class and special. We tried the coconut shrimp as the appetizer and really liked it. It was lightly fried and the shrimp was cooked to perfection - not under and not over. I would highly recommend this one to start. Loved it. If you're looking for a fair-priced meal, they have lots of salad and sandwich options. I tried the salmon poke bowl and it was so delicious. The fish was extremely fresh, and all the flavors blended together really well. It was like a healthy party in my mouth. It was great decision. You wanna splurge a bit and live large like YOLO? You gotta get the crab cake. Now, how good can a crab cake be? Well, if you're paying close to $50 for one crab cake, you better believe it's gonna be freaking awesome. And alas, it was. Best crab cake I've ever had in my life, no joke. And I've tried a lot of crab cakes in my many decades of dining out. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant and will be coming back many times. Enjoy! Quick note on parking - plenty of parking in a huge lot shared by many businesses such as Kenny and Ziggy's. Only annoying part is several sections of the lot are designated for specific businesses, so just look for the signs and be willing to park a little bit further away towards Taco Deli and Bluestone. read more

Live in the neighborhood and FINALLY wandered down the sidewalk for HH with friends. We sat at the bar and had great service! Definitely recommend the Cucumber Martini. We also enjoyed the coconut shrimp. We had the lump crab handroll - would have enjoyed it more had it been cut, and the fries were heavily on the salty side. Fun environment. read more

My favorite part of this place was the ambiance and interior design. SOO cool. Service was great as well. The grilled red fish was very good. I felt the fish itself was overcooked but it was balanced out nicely with the cream lemon sauce and lobster on top of the fish. Overall a great dish, very intimate cool interior, I'd love to come back to try different entrees! read more
Absolutely exceptional! From the pleasant greeting to the excellent food, I loved every minute and look forward to returning soon. Id been told the crab cake is the best in town and I fully agree! What a perfect and generously sized preparation! I also loved the Napa salad, which was so fresh and yummy. The frozen greyhound was also so good - I'd come back just for drinks! Atmosphere was upscale casual and I loved the service and ambiance at the bar and the bar table. All patrons seemed to be enjoying themselves and there was a good, energetic vibe the entire evening. read more

Balboa Surf Club is life! It's a moment, it's a vibe, it's evething and more. Brought a friend here for her birthday and we all left in a haze of extreme satisfaction. From the architecture, the service and the food, Balboa is winning! We enjoyed ourselves immensely. Joseph was our waiter and he is Balboa's secret weapon. Extremely knowledgeable and intelligent on top of just being a phenomenal waiter. We started with ordering two of everything on the happy hour menu: the delicious oysters (so fresh), The Madjool Dates (heaven), The Tuna Tostada (Offensively Fantastic), Jumbo Lump Crab Handroll (Yummy), The Crispy Grouper Tacos (excellent) and of course the French Fries with aioli sauce. We were in heaven. The restaurant is visually stunning and the atmosphere is very modern and sophisticated and calming. The staff is a well oiled machine (kudos to management). We never needed anything because everything was taken care of and everything was provided. Joseph took very good care of us and could answer any questions we had and has the most pleasant sense of humor and professionalism. Cocktails are very delicious and well balanced. Entrees we ordered were the SPICY AHI TUNA ROLL, SHASHIMI SALAD, THE MOROCCAN, THE TUNA BURGER, AND THE CRISPY CHICKEN BURGER. Presentation and wonderfully crafted flavors was the star of all these dishes. I don't have a complaint about any of any of the dishes. But don't leave with out dessert. The coconut tres leches cake and the chocolate pie are to die for. The dessert chef put love into these desserts, don't skip DESSERT! WE LEFT ON CLOUD NINE. WE WILL MAKE THIS ONE OF OUR SPOTS WE BRING EVERYONE TO. THANK YOU Balboa and Joseph for making a bday dinner experience out of this world. Upon entry the staff was very attentive. Our waitress recommended the redfish and it did not disappoint. She also recommended a white wine which was so delicious. The sushi rolls were really good and I don't eat raw sushi. The ambience is chill but vibey. They have self park and valet. Definitely will be back! read more

First time at Balboa. My sister and I wanted to try it the last time we were in Houston but didn't get a chance. We came for lunch and it wasn't terribly busy but the staff were very nice. It was super clean and inviting, tons of natural light brightening up the restaurant. Started off the a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and we split the spicy tuna roll and coconut shrimp. We are not coconut fans but loved the coconut shrimp. The spicy tuna was fresh and very flavorful and delicious. For my meal I orders the tuna frites with a side of wasabi which really elevated the dish in my opinion. The tuna was seared to perfection and very flavorful. I also orders a gimlet which was delicious! I can't wait to visit Houston again and come here! read more

Wow!! I had no idea what to expect. This was a surprise for my moms birthday dinner. So I had no time to look up the menu ahead of time. Our server was very nice and quick but not rushed service. They gave us a complimentary glass of champagne. The sushi roll was amazing. I'm still thinking about it. lol. The oysters were a great app choice. Great food and ambiance- our dinner lasted for 3 hours, but not by choice. We had a birthday reservation and the service left a lot to be desired. We got refills every 45 minutes, long waits in between ordering, and to top it off- the server dropped the dessert on the table and sped off, just overall dismissive and I feel bad for recommending this spot to the birthday girl. read more

I came here for lunch today and loved it! The ambiance was nice and we didn't have to wait long for a table. There was a patio area but no one was outside. We were seated in a booth and had an amazing waitress who walked us through options on the menu. We started with the coconut shrimp and spicy tuna roll. Both were amazing and flavorful but the tuna roll was my favorite. It wasn't spicy though but the flavors were delicious. I ordered the crab cakes which came with fries. They did not skimp on the crab meat. It's one large crab cake which was perfect for a lunch option. Highly recommend this spot for a nice lunch or dinner option. This is what, review #1000? I LOVE Balboa! We usually come at least 2x per month and the experience has never been bad. Whether you get a patio seat, when the weather is decent, or sit inside you can't go wrong. The staff is always friendly and remembers friendly faces. Balboa Surf Club is located in the Galleria / Uptown district. It replaced the old Masraff's restaurant location, sharing the same plaza as Kenny and Ziggy's restaurant. It offers upscale American seafood, sushi, salads, burgers, and steaks. The restaurant offers complimentary valet and a private parking lot. There are a lot of parking spaces available in this plaza. I do recommend making reservations online via Open Table for any occasion. Balboa Surf Club's interior decor is gorgeously upscale, sleek, and modern. It is divided into two spaces inside: the first with an open space with the outside light radiating the ten dining tables behind the hostess. The other more dim-lighted seating with green and brown sophisticated decor is the main dining area. There are outside dining options as well. FOOD: 1. Nigiri Plate (4/5; ahi tuna, salmon, and jumbo scallop): The nigiri slices for the ahi tuna, salmon, and scallops were amazing. My personal favorite was the scallop, which was 5/5. The other two (ahi tuna and salmon) were 4/5. 2. Coconut Shrimp (2/5; toasted coconut battered rock shrimp, with spicy mayo for dipping): We could not taste much of the toasted coconut. Otherwise, it is fried shrimp with a spicy mayo side. It could be better. 3. The Crab Cake (5/5; jumbo lump crab, served over lemon dill sauce with French fries): This is the best lump crab I've tried with a great serving size! It was so delicious, and the lemon dill sauce was heaven. I would order this again. There was a thin layer of breadcrumbs at the top with seasoning, that complemented the crab flavor. 4. Coconut Tres Leches (4/5): This was scrumptious! The cake was milky and creamy. I love it when the tres leches cake is more moist than dry from the condensed milk, and this one nailed it. This is one of my new faves. I went for dinner and the restaurant has an intimate feel. It's dimly lit, so everyone is kind of at their table in their own space. I have no complaints about the service and was satisfied with all of the recommendations. FOOD: -Crab cake - this is one of the their tops sellers, but I wasn't impressed. They do pair it with skinny fries. It just didn't give me that warm fuzzy feeling where you start to thin k about when you're going to come back again. -Fish or the day: redfish with a white sauce and lump crab meat, mashed potatoes, sautéed spinach. Everything was delicious. -Rainbow roll - I almost made the mistake of not getting this roll because it made me think of cheap buffet type sushi, but boy was I wrong. If you like a variety of fish, this is the roll for you. BEST Rainbow roll I've ever had -Spicy Ahi Tuna roll - I love most rolls that add a little spice and tuna is probably one of my favorites fish so if you do too this is a light and refreshing roll. Came here for a birthday date night to start my birthday month off strong.. This place was absolutely AMAZING. We will be back! Our server was great very knowledgeable of the menu, super sweet, and very accommodating. Our cucumber martini glasses were constantly replaced with a fresh icy glass every so often. That's service! Seriously 10/10 everything about this place. East coast oysters are a must! FRESH and delicious! When a restaurant has only one steak option you know you are in LUCK! So delicious great flavor and completely charred to perfection. I enjoyed the blackened trout with the potato puree and jalapeño coleslaw. Anywho-- Espresso Martini: 6/10 Guac: 11/10, soooooo fresh and yummy!! Def mixed with my crab cakes + corn, super yum! Salmon Sushi Roll: 6/10, I couldn't get with the Apple pieces :( Crab cakes + Sub fries for corn: 7/10 The food was good, nothing I haven't had before. I can tell their company loves green. I love green too. classy casual and nice. They cook some foods with canola oil so beware my bloaters. The crab was good, the goddess salad was great. We also got the smoked salmon and king crab roll. read more
Service was great. Food was very good. Portions are small though. Trout was delicious with the potato puree and spinach. I ordered a side of creamed corn soo good. My martinis tasted great. The first time I came here I was in awe about the upscale look and ambience! I came for a business lunch and inside we were greeted by 2 hosts and then escorted to our table which our vendor had already arrived. We got a round corner booth for 4 people and this was perfect. I also noticed that around the room, there were several other business meetings happening because there were several groups of people who were wearing business professional outfits. Our server came out and greeted us and took our drink orders then we ordered some appetizers at some point but it took a minute for our server to come back to us. It wasn't necessarily busy but I also don't know if she was just giving us space because she saw we were talking? After ordering the appetizers, the food came out and she checked in on us and luckily came by to take our entree orders. Everything I ate was delicious and I really enjoyed the ambience. The interior itself was beautiful and I hope to be able to come back for a dinner service because our business partner mentioned that she had been there for dinner several times with her girlfriends and the dinner food was her favorite. The chef came out to greet us and also sent over 2 complimentary desserts which was so nice of him! I was really glad to get to try a dessert and it was delicious, I just wish I wasn't so full that I couldn't eat more! Service could be better but I'll give benefit of the doubt that the server was trying to be respectful but we would have also liked to order accordingly to keep the lunch meeting within the hour instead of 1.5 hours. read more

Evveeerryyything was good! The crab is large and fresh and light. Fried oysters..,perfect! Our server Miles was on point. The restaurant bar is een as immediately when walking in and the lighting isn't too dim. We return for sure. read more

Hi! Jackets are not required. We suggest business casual attire but we want our guests to feel comfortable. Our only request is that gentleman wear shirts with sleeves (aka- no tank tops).
