This place is cozy and dark, well decorated. I had the tres golpes roll. It was very tasty but the drinks were weak and the service was extremely slow towards the end. The review mainly reflects the automatic 18% gratuity added on. I sat at the bar by myself and was not impressed that this was not mentioned at any point, as I almost left more of a tip.
Easy 5 star review! Daniella is an absolute professional! She is doing a great job here! So is Crystal. Great customer service and amazing food! Food: the oxtails are phenomenal. Such an amazing dish. This will be my go to from now on. Very tender and full of flavor. The rice and beans were good too along with the plantains. Everything was top notch! Great service, great location! I wish I would have found out a little this place sooner. They need to market to the market square tower, Aris and brava.
I came here for a Galentine's dinner my friend hosted for a party of 8 and we had such a great time! They were super accommodating and even let her decorate the table with games and balloons which made it really special. The atmosphere was amazing, there was a DJ, people were dancing, and there's even a speakeasy . The music was pretty loud, which made it a little hard for our large group to talk at times. Not a complaint at all, just something to note if you're coming with a big group because the vibe is definitely lively. The drinks were great! I tried my first espresso martini here and now I'm hooked! The food was amazing too, I had the oxtail and loved it. I'll definitely be back, probably with a smaller group or even solo.
I've come here a few times during the day & night due to how close it is to me. I like the fact that they have hookah readily available but I dislike the price. It typically ranges from $40-$50 with $20 refill. I say range because it's always different & you pay for it separately. Deans's has cheaper hookah and free refills but it isn't available during the day, bummer. The outside patio is a nice play to sit & people watch if you're downtown on a nice day. Service is always prompt even when busy. They make great espresso martinis. I've only tried appetizers & deserts here but they were good. I would try more entree options eventually.
I made reservations for 8:30pm. We valet parked in front of the restaurant, which was really convenient. They took us right away as most of the restaurant was empty. It's so loud in there, it's more like a club with food and not a restaurant that you can go to and talk to your date. It took our waitress over 10 minutes just to come by and take our drink order, this was a theme all night. She was nowhere to be found! We ordered tostones with crab meat, and pork belly appetizer. Both dishes were delicious and flavorful. We ordered the stuffed fish and my husband ordered a stuffed yucca dish. Both were amazing We finished our meal with one of the best tres leches I've ever had. It was so loud in there, I honestly couldn't wait to leave. I couldn't talk to my husband all night. Great club with awesome music. Service sucks, but the food is amazing!
Located where Azuma used to be in downtown. Service was a bit slow. The food here is Caribbean influenced. The dishes are okay; you can tell the seafood is previously frozen and some dishes are fairly pre-made. The empanada trio were fine, and the yucca balls tasted fairly bland. For the main, the mofongo I tried had shrimp and lobster that tasted a bit rubbery and frozen-ish. Overall, the flavor profile is a bit lacking and I feel the Cisco effect a bit.
We've wanted to try this place. We went for our daughter's 29th birthday. The food was delicious but overpriced. We ordered 2 drinks at the bar while we waited and it was $45! The service was ok. It was dark and crowded in the seating area. It was a little loud so it was difficult to talk. We may try again for a brunch on the weekend.
Really great vibe and customer service. Food is super flavorful. Had the mafungo and the lecho. Simply delicious. The lechón was so soft and tender. Rice and beans were so tasty and the mafungo was really cooked to perfection with asado and delicious flavors.
Great, both plates we're incredible. There really wasn't much to complain about the atmosphere the music everything was just beautiful the ambiance all of it.
Came in on a Sunday afternoon. I was walking the downtown area and found this restaurant in Yelp. First off, the music was blaring. They had speakers blasting outside as well. I had already intended to order to-go, so the music didn't deter me. Inside was very dimly lit, giving it a lounge vibe. There's a backdrop for the socials too. The staff was nice, and the food was delicious. We ordered the oxtail croquettes and the empanadas. Although, one of the chicken empanadas had a huge bone in it, which was crazy to chomp on. Heads up, they automatically add 18% tip to your bill with an option to add more and charge a 3% credit card fee.
On a Sunday afternoon I was walking in downtown Houston and heard the lively music coming out of Mamajuana and decided to give it a try. Walking in I felt the energy and vibe. I was welcomed and seated at the bar back to the influencer wall. Michelle was my incredible bartender that set the experience. She guided me through the menu and I followed her suggestions. The Mamafungo with steak and cheese brought me back to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Amazing flavor explosion in my mouth the did not need any additional seasoning. I then ordered the Warm Brownie tree which was the perfect compliment for my delicious meal. I looked up from.my finished meal and saw the restaurant packed with 2 large birthday celebrations,. The music was great and kept the energy buzzing. Im.about to be a regular!!! Well done
Mamajuana is a hidden gem that effortlessly blends exceptional food, a vibrant atmosphere, and a chic speakeasy experience. From the moment you step in, you're greeted with warm lighting and an inviting ambiance that sets the stage for a memorable evening. The restaurant's contemporary yet cozy décor creates the perfect balance between lively energy and intimate charm. The service is top notch attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. The staff goes out of their way to ensure every guest feels welcomed and valued, offering excellent recommendations and making you feel at home from start to finish. The food is nothing short of extraordinary. Each dish is a burst of flavor, from perfectly seasoned meats to fresh, creatively prepared seafood. I had the chicken Parmesan, which was cooked to perfection. The menu blends bold, local flavors with contemporary twists, and every bite is a delightful surprise. Be sure to save room for dessert, as their offerings are decadent and beautifully presented. The real magic, though, lies in the speakeasy. Tucked away in the back, it offers an exclusive, cozy atmosphere where expertly crafted cocktails are served with precision. The bartenders are true artisans, mixing unique, housemade infusions and premium spirits into drinks that elevate the experience. FYI From what I was told the speakeasy is for reservation purposes but if it's slow it's open to the public. Whether you're here for dinner or drinks, Mamajuana offers a complete sensory experience. It's a must visit for anyone seeking great food, impeccable service, and an unforgettable speakeasy vibe. *BONUS Also don't quote me on this but I believe they have a LIVE Band on Friday night , DJ on Saturdays an a ALL DAY BRUNCH ON SUNDAY
Food was pretty good, nice presentation and decent quality. Service was good. Ambiance is excellent, especially with the little speakeasy attached. My only complaint was, the stuffed plantain appetizer--the plantain itself were like little hard biscuits? Idk, never not had a good plantain and it was odd.

If I had to choose one word to summarize my experience at Mamajuana Café, it would be: perfect. The restaurant describes itself as a Latin American dining experience. Our waitress explained that the menu is a fusion of Dominican and Japanese cuisine. Since I have never visited either the Dominican Republic or Japan, I cannot speak to its authenticity. What I can say with confidence is that they have mastered flavor. The team at Mamajuana Café clearly pays attention to every detail--from timing and presentation to the thoughtful combination of ingredients and spices. Every dish felt carefully crafted and intentionally prepared. I only wish I lived closer so I could return more often and explore more of the menu. We ordered the burger and the filet mignon, and I highly recommend both. In fact, the burger was excellent. My only regret is ordering something familiar instead of taking the opportunity to try one of their more unique creations. If our first visit is any indication, Mamajuana Café is a place well worth returning to. read more

My friend suggested this place. When I seen it was Latin American with a hint of Caribbean, I was immediately turned off. However, you don't just a book by its cover. The food was good. The vibe was everything. Our waiter, Chelsea was amazing. Super personable and overall sweet. She definitely added to the experience. Ya'll... this place is amazing. The vibe, the decor, the music, everything was great. The food was amazing. The drinks strong. I looked at the menu before arriving and I was just going to get a drink. But no. They have an all day brunch on Sundays only. Definitely take advantage of that. They have bottomless mimosas with your choice of a specific meal item for $50. It's a great deal if you're a mimosa person. I am. I will be returning. read more
This has been on my list for a while so I'm glad I got a chance to dine in at Mamajuana Cafe during the ACHE conference with a group of about 17 on a Monday night. Our assistant made the reservation and despite a conference being in town, alongside a CHEER competition and the kickoff to the Rodeo, I was genuinely impressed with how smoothly everything went. Even with a large party, the staff handled our orders with ease. There was no confusion or delays and our food came out in about 15 minutes, which again, is pretty impressive given our group size. Everyone ordered something different, and there were no complaints across the table about the food. I got the stuffed red snapper, and it was flavorful. You can tell the kitchen knows what it's doing. The staff were also friendly and the restaurant is very spacious and well maintained. As expected for a downtown spot, parking is what it is, so plan accordingly (weekdays are better). But overall, the efficiency, service, and quality of food made this a great experience, especially for a large group. read more

Went here with a group of 12 for some lite bites, drinks, music and vibe. The interior was spacious and the view through the large windows facing the patio enhanced the scene. It is an oxymoron, but it felt expansive and intimate possibly from the hidden from view speakeasy towards the rear. Everyone's libations did not disappoint and the appetizers were ok. I found out the next day, the only dish that did not agree with people was the Crispy Pork Belly Ceviche. It did not sound right to me Crispy Pork Belly and Ceviche in the same name so I was one of the lucky ones to be unscathed. I still plan of returning for some dancing so until then... read more

My sister and I came here for lunch and loved the food! The menu offered various Latin cuisine options and some standard bar food so there is something for everyone. There is outdoor and indoor seating, and the staff are fast and attentive! My favorite part was that they were playing Beyoncé music nonstop throughout lunch in honor of Cowboy Carter. A bunch of people at the restaurant were going to the Houston show that day so this made the experience even more fun. read more
Mamajuana was a vibe! We visited on a weekday night an overall good experience. To start, we lucked up on street parking, but we know that won't be the case each time due to no private parking. We were quickly greeted and seated upon entry. Our waiter service was ok...could have been better with attentiveness. However, the food and drinks made up for it. I got the oxtail and let's just say it was all gone lol! Seriously, everything taste very fresh and well prepared. Prices were just a little higher, but I'll say it was worth it. The owner actually came over and talked with us for a bit, which was very nice of him. He informed us about the speak easy and the salsa nights which we'll definitely be back for. Be sure to give this restaurant a try - you'll be in for a treat! read more

The place is very pretty. Good music. We went on a Thursday for happy hour. Not many people but that's what we wanted. Great service and ambiance. Food was good. Mixed drinks were also good. Curious to visit on a busy night to see what the vibe would be. Would definitely come back. read more

I really enjoy this place, the food is great, the drink well poured and delicious. I work close by so lunch is often there to satisfy my craving of Dominican food. The ambiance is nice and the service is great. Sancocho is as good as mine, the empanadas yummy, the pastas are great, but everything is good. Only missing a few items on the menu to try and I will! I love it!! read more

I had a really disappointing experience at this restaurant. From the start, the service was terrible -- our waitress barely checked on us and was almost impossible to find when we needed anything. We felt completely ignored the entire time. The food made things even worse. The steak was extremely fatty and not enjoyable at all, and the chicken was undercooked, which is honestly unacceptable and concerning. Between the poor service and low-quality food, this was a frustrating experience overall. I definitely wouldn't recommend this place and won't be coming back. read more

Visited Mamajuana for a my cousins birthday dinner. Atmosphere was nice. Seating was a little tight for a large group but we had fun! I had the shrimp and lobster mofongo. It was very tasty! Service was great and met all our needs When back in town, I will visit again. read more
Came in with reservation on a Saturday night at 5:30, seated immediately but reservations were completely open the night before and did not seem very busy yet. Food 5/5: ordered the mixed skewers and the stuffed red snapper for 2, skewers were pretty good overall but highly recommend the red snapper. Enough for 1.5 people, and stuffed stuffed with tons of seafood and rice Ambiance 4/5: dimly lit, pretty venue with a bar and a place to take pics, but nothing that really wows Service 4/5: fairly slow bringing food out but otherwise polite and friendly Value 3.5/5: somewhat expensive but appropriately so, not really good value but fairly priced Overall 4.2/5: would go again for the snapper alone. Great food for average value Parking: street parking, valet parking is available per the screens inside but I didn't see it. read more

Food was average, service was poor even though there were far more staff than patrons and bar service is questionable. I ordered an original old fashion to drink. It came with an ice block and the contents still only half filled the cup. Which means I was only given like a sip of cocktail. The mashed potatoes had nice presentation but no seasoning, no salt. The eggplant croquettes were okay but the eggplant was almost non-existent. The rest of my party (4 others) were also not impressed with their meals nor the service. Would not return. read more

The bottomless mimosas were way more than I was expecting, but I am not here to complain. I honestly don't think that I'll ever be able to do a bottomless mimosa brunch again after the amazing experience that I had here. My breakfast burger was also phenomenal. Our waitress was very friendly and the service was immaculate. The ambience was super dope and they had a Halloween theme going with a speakeasy back by the bathroom. read more

I was traveling for work and stopped here with my colleague to grab some hookah and a work call. I didn't realize it's a restaurant that serves hookah instead of a hookah lounge that serves food (if that makes sense). That being the case, my colleague and I had just had lunch so we didn't get to try their food. The hookah was okay, but I am a hookah snob and very particular of how it should smoke. Our server was so kind to check on us with the hookah and take it back a few times to make sure it was smoking right. Another thing to mention, my colleague and I had to take a work call inside and for a restaurant, it was really nice of them to accommodate us at a table with an outlet nearby. I do wish I tried the food. I watched the table next to me eat their meal, everything looked amazing. This is definitely a spot I would check out once I'm in Houston again. The inside was beautiful and it looks like a lively place for dinner! read more
I planned a birthday dinner here for a group of 15. The reservation was for 6PM and we arrived early around 545 to ensure we would be seated. We weren't seated until 645. After being seated, it took forever for a server to come get our drink order. We had to ask for water even though they had glasses for water. We finally placed our appetizer and food order, and it literally took forever to get our food. It was almost an hour and 25 minutes before we got our food. Now understanding that it was a large group I expected a week but we all pretty much ordered the same thing. Our server was so slow and we tried to give him a chance, but it was ridiculous. We never had our water refilled the entire 2 1/2 hours we were there. I have to say the food was very good and pricey for Mofongo, but since we were celebrating a milestone birthday for a friend, we didn't really care. The upside is the drinks were strong and worth the money. The aesthetics and music were really good. But, I don't have to return to this place. It was definitely a one time and done situation. read more
