Under the volcano has friendly bar staff who are happy to give recommendations. There's seating at the bar, throughout the restaurant, and on two different patios. The vibe is Tiki bar with great drinks. My favorite is he piña colada because almost like a slightly icy martini rather than a thick shake like they usually are. This little oasis is more or less tucked away in the residential section of North West University There is plenty of parting both in their gravel lot, and on the surrounding streets. The exterior is well lit, and the bar is rather vibrant and inviting The interior is colorful with all sorts of art on the wall like indigenous looking ceremonial masks The staff is not only helpful and professional, but for a bar, they're actually fairly friendly There is a fully stocked bar with plenty on beers on tap, but their signature cocktails are the biggest draw. Under the Volcano is a not so hidden gem on the edge of Rice Village (RV). It represents one of the few "legacy" businesses remaining that used to make RV very cool, very bohemian. It's basically a "dive bar" from way back when inner Houston used to be known for its vibrant vintage culture; before becoming overly commercialized and commodified into everything "current thing" that it seems to be evolving into. In any event, I love coming here for a nice glass of wine when I visit. Takes me back! read more

This is a cool spot! I have heard about it for a while and meant to check it out. J and I found ourselves wanting a good drink spot for a Friday night and we decided to go to Under the Volcano! We got there in the late evening, around 8pm. We walked inside and found a few patrons but had no trouble getting our orders in. I opted for the strawberry basil marg and J got the Mexican Martini. The bartender took our order quickly and all the staff were quite friendly. We got our drinks soon after and stepped outside to their patio to sip and enjoy. The strawberry basil marg was fantastic!! I thoroughly enjoyed the delicious pairing and the basil made for a wonderful herbal taste. The Mexican martini was more of a miss for us - it was very strong and not exactly what we were expecting after seeing it described as a margarita. This would be a great spot to come with friends, or on a date, or anything in between! We enjoyed our experience here and would love to come back and check out some more cocktails! read more

The service was terrible but I wasn't too surprised about that. The reason for this review is the chorizo queso was almost $10 and I was ok with that because I was expecting a small bowl, not a cup. So I went and checked the picture on its yelp page and sure enough it looks much bigger than the one I received. It was late so I feel they just scraped a cup together and served it as a "normal size" and thought we wouldn't know. Here's a picture for reference. So nice that one of us actually went twice!--came with the brother on Thursday night, and loved it so much that she insisted on going back the next night for a drink and snack before dinner. First of all, it's adorable, kind of a little oasis from the busyness of Bissonet Street with an sweet patio (unfortunately inhabited by smokers, so no thank you) and a really spacious inside without obnoxiously loud music playing. You order at the bar and they bring everything out to you. It's clean, and bussers are attentive. The festive decor makes it all the more fun. The drinks are great, and of course one of us tried the frozen screwdriver one night, in addition to a margarita and the cucumber rickey. All excellent! The cuba libre was appreciated by the one of us who likes coke. The queso is delish! And on the earlier night, one of us shared some empanadas that were all incredible. You order at the bar and have to purchase a drink to get the steak night deal, doesn't have to be an alcoholic drink - I got the strawberry lemonade and it was delicious! The steak comes with a salad, in an Asian miso dressing. The salad was cold and fresh, the fiance really wanted another! The steaks were tender and flavorful, and the mash potatoes were soft, buttery and fluffy! It came with a chimichurri sauce on the side. We got the ribeye and thought it was a bit fatty, it was a good piece of meat. Seasoned and cooked well. I've been here recently for empanadas as well and they are always crispy, flakey, and full of flavor! Great neighborhood bar if you're not looking for anything fancy! We found ourselves needing a bit of a respite on Christmas Eve day, and were so happy to see them open. We popped in long enough for a couple of Irish coffees and a holiday nog. Really enjoy this cute cocktail bar in West U. I'm not a fan of the Rice Village bar scene. Parking is a hassle. And while its private parking lot here is on the small side, it's away from the hustle and bustle of the village. This place is cute with a fun tiki theme. Cocktails are well crafted and tasty, and their sign boasts local awards for select cocktails. I enjoy the outdoor patio on nice weather days. A limited food menu is offered. The taco I ordered was tasty enough but not standout, and the empanada I ordered was good but super small. I hear they have a decent steak night worth checking out. We love coming for Sunday brunch. The menu Isn't super extensive but everything is delicious! I always get the rib tips platter which is a great sampler to get a taste of everything including rib tips, scrambled eggs, jalapeños cheesy grits, and delicious brioche toast with real jam. Carafes of mimosas are a fantastic deal, as is the frozen screwdriver (just get it!) Our bartender Alexandria is always welcoming and gracious! We cannot say enough great things about this place. We were looking for a casual outing for a birthday meal and I found this place searching on Yelp for last minute steak night suggestions on a Monday of all days. Got ready and headed there immediately after 20 minutes of discovery lol. Spacious parking lot on a weekday. It was not packed and was very easy to find. Customer service was non existent when we first walked in. The lighting was already dim and the music playing had dark tones so for people to completely ignore us felt unwelcoming. There were around four bartenders by the bar area but no one greeted us and we stood awkwardly for a couple of seconds before deciding to walk up to the bar and placing our order. Besides that small hiccup, the night went pleasantly well. Our steaks were delicious and very flavorful. The meat was tender and moist. The guy that served us our steaks noticed that our salads didn't come out and asked if we still wanted them which I felt was really awesome, because to be honest, I completely forgot that it was part of the order lol. I'm so glad he did because I devoured it in minutes. It was that good. They also did not skimp on the mashed potatoes which I loved! All in all, a chill place to vibe with friends and get a good steak if you're not feeling too chatty. Don't expect super friendly peeps. read more

It was about 4-5$ a taco - depending on your selection - it was honestly quite tasty. The bill quickly racked up with queso, two tacos and a drink being around 32$. So glad I came here for their steak night. It's $25 for a 16 oz steak that comes with a salad, mashed potatoes, and chimichurri sauce. It was hands down one of the best steaks I've had in a while! I got the strip steak (they also have ribeye steaks) medium well and the mesquite grill flavor was so good. The screwdriver was really good too, it didn't taste strong but after one I had a good buzz going. Will definitely be back next time I'm in the mood for a good steak and or need a drink. read more

Steak night included a salad, choice of ribeye or strip and mash potatoes I believe for $25. Drinks are all made with fresh juice and they are not stingy. This place has super cool vibes and amazing decoration to set the ambience for this Hawaiian themed bar/ restaurant. We tried their white queso, chicken tinga taco, beef taco, salmon taco and their chicken curry empanada. Overall selection very interesting and not bad. Definitely an array of different cultures combined and was pleasantly surprised. I would suggest having an open mind and pallet to match when visiting. This isn't a place for the weak minded.. or weak stomachs. As I like to try odd/weird things from time to time.. I had no choice but to try the horseradish Margarita... not my favorite. One thing I will say is that the drinks all tasted the same with the exception of one that had a kick of horseradish.(what can I say, I'm brave.. get over it) The mixed drinks do need a bit of a sprucing up..
