After having gone to Frank's on the other side of town the previous week, I decided to stop in at Telwink, another classic diner on a Tuesday afternoon. Telwink is a lot larger with plenty of parking, but its menu is similar in its breadth and prices. You get a lot of food for what you pay for. I ordered the catfish breakfast which featured 3 thin strips of catfish, coated in corn meal rather than flour. I liked this iteration more than Frank's, mainly because the corn meal retained less oil. Otherwise, the rest of the breakfast taste the same. The grits were underseasoned, but there were plenty of hot sauce options along with salt and pepper to dress them. My waitress told me that biscuits usually sell out by noon so I had toast instead. read more

Being first and greeted by Ms. Lora who very politely brought menu I indicated my friend and daughter & granddaughter would be arriving shortly she assured me she would return. If you're a Houstonian and don't know about Telwink Grill, I don't know what to tell you. It's only one of the oldest restaurants in the city and has been here since the 1940's. I grew up in the Southeast part of Houston so I guess that helps. The area isn't what it is used to be, but don't let that keep you from coming in and experiencing what I think is a true diner. The parking lot adds to the charm. The layout may change on every visit because there's no real lines. Once that first person parks, people just start making up spots. Potholes are definitely present so drive carefully. Walking in, it almost feels like you are transported back in time. It has that old school diner feel, with nothing new or modern about it. They have a large dining room, but also have counter seating as well. Another thing you will notice is the seasoned staff. There's a couple of youngsters thrown in, but mostly it's the older generation that I'm sure has been there for awhile. They have great customer service and do it with a smile. Not often you get called darling and sweetie. Miriam was my last server and I swear, every time I took a few sips of my coffee, she was happily refilling it. Telwink is open from 6am-3pm so you have a breakfast and lunch menu. That being said, there's quite a few options. They have three pages of food consisting of all the breakfast items you would expect as well as burgers, sandwiches, salads, plate lunches, sides, and desserts. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I went that route. Everything looked good as it left the kitchen but the omelets were really calling out to me. I usually go with a meaty omelet but Miriam talked me into the Polish omelet which had polish sausage and you can add veggies to it. I got it with the works and it came with a side of toast and hash browns. This thing was massive and very filling. They didn't skimp on the toppings either. It was very good. The hash browns were cooked just the way I like them, but needed to be doctored up with a little seasoning and sauces. My breakfast date got chicken fried chicken and it too was a large portion. Luckily she got the gravy on the side because she took quite a bit home and this kept it from being soggy later. We also shared a waffle which was delicious. Overall, all my visits here have always been great. Some may say it's in a sketch part of town, or it's just old and outdated, but to me, that just adds to the charm. The steady crowds on any day of the week shows why it's been around forever and probably will outlast most places in the future. I'll be back! read more

I actually found this place by accident, my original breakfast spot was closed, and Telwink just happened to be on the way to my next stop. They've got free parking, but fair warning... it's a little chaotic. Folks just seem to stop wherever and hop out. The whole vibe gives old school truck stop; nothing fancy, no Instagrammable green walls just straight up, seat yourself diner energy. Within minutes of sitting down, you'll have a menu, a glass of water, and food on the way shortly after. You get a lot of food for not a lot of money, which I love. And funny enough, I've never actually paid my own tab here, complete strangers have always insisted on covering it. Of course, I still make sure to tip the waitress well every time. All I ever really want is a hearty breakfast that won't break the bank, and this place delivers. Just know they only serve until 3 PM, and I've only ever had breakfast, so I can't speak on the lunch options. The grits could use more seasoning, but they've got every condiment you could need right on the table. My only gripe? That butter that's not butter situation... pretty sure it's margarine. read more

I hadn't been here in years. My first Black Friday meal of the year. I never eat breakfast stuff before afternoon, bc I never wake up with an appetite in the morning. I ordered my favorite from here yesterday before some mall shopping being 2 Large Pancakes with Turkey Sausage Links togo. Both very delicious, juicy, tender and flavorful. The pancakes tasted homemade by their batter and feel obviously. Very soft, fluffy, just the right griddled top and thickness. I brought my own sugar-free syrup since I like my pancakes almost drenched in them without all that excess sugar n calories. I also ate some bites with strawberry jam too. The turkey sausage was nicely spiced with a crunchy bite to them and honestly tastes like a pork sausage without being too greasy. They had a bit more volume and firmness to them to distinguish from pork ones due to lack of grease. However, not dried out and had that savory spiced vibe to them. I remember the chicken fried chicken being very good here when my dad would get it. I would like to order sunny side up eggs at some point here too. read more

Not real sure how I feel about this place. My coworker wanted to go here for lunch and hyped this place up, so my expectations were high. It didn't deliver what I thought it was going to. My first mind told me to order the pancakes, but I changed my mind at the last minute and chose the chicken fried chicken meal. When it came to the table, my coworker said it looked like it was a frozen chicken fried chicken that they just warmed up. I'd hope that wasn't the case, but from the taste of it, I could believe it. The French fries and broccoli were good, but the cornbread was for sure overcooked and quite crunchy. I immediately regretted not just getting the pancakes. I'm not going to count this place out just yet. If we decide to visit in the future, I'll go for the pancakes and see if my opinion of this place changes. Very classic diner that is huge with a huge parking lot. The food is what's to be expected and solid. It has a huge menu with a lot of classic and Tex-Mex breakfast options. There were a lot of nonbreakfast options, but we came for the breakfast. It was packed when we got there but no wait around 9 in the morning, later in the morning there seemed to be a wait. There were quirky signs all around and definitely the diner feel. They were very attentive to refilling our coffee. The prices were good as well for the amounts of food they give. Telwink offers classic greasy spoon diner food at low prices. Each dish offers huge portions and flavorful bites! The restaurant is casual and offers booths and tables with a big parking lot to accomodate the various mealtime crowds. My last visit I ordered a waffle with bacon and that was about $8. The employees hustle to make sure you are well taken care of and they keep the pace of the restaurant flowing well. I like to go early to avoid any wait time. The parking lot can be a bit rough in some areas though with dips so be aware. Seating/ambiance: The decor is very small-diner vibes. Nothing too crazy. There's tons of seating too - booths, tables (for various sized parties), and bar seating. It's good to note that there can be a long line out the door, that being said tables turn over quickly and we've never chosen to leave because of the line. Food: The food is solid diner food. There's a lot of options from breakfast to lunch. You really can't go wrong with any of it ! I believe they also have specials depending on the day I believe. I was disappointed eating here. One star for large portions but the food was very bland. I doused everything with salt packets and hot sauce for some flavor. The grits were stiff, the catfish was sour, the house made biscuits were extremely doughy, dry and tasteless and the coffee tasted old and bitter. The waitresses have been there forever and are hard working and friendly. The menu for breakfast and lunch is extensive and reasonably priced. You will find everything that you would expect from a restaurant that has been around for sixty years. The Bad: Although there is a large parking lot, it does become quite crowded. The food is good comfort food, but you will not be bothered with anything fancy. If it was not on the menu in 1970, it probably is not on the menu today. I will return again and again. read more
