Go on a date here if: you love a good burger, wanna show your date/partner that you know the cool little duck off spots, are looking for something delicious to eat in 5th Ward. I believe this may be the BEST BURGER IN HOUSTON. Delicious, FRESH beef, excellent seasoning, great price for quantity of food, short wait time, and I can go on and on. Hubby and I got recommended this spot a couple of weeks ago and finally made some time to go. I had the regular cheeseburger, he had a double cheeseburger and both came with side of fries and a drink. Our total was $30 even and get this - they serve free margaritas on Tuesdays and Thursdays so my husband enjoyed one of those as well. From start to finish that burger had us looking at each other crazy. We spent the rest of the day in total disbelief about how amazing these damn burgers were. Food aside, the feel/atmosphere of the place was great; clearly a family business that has been running for years as evidenced by the old photos all around the shop. Service was great and all the workers had big bright smiles. STOP BY!

Food is always on point! Kool-Aid is always a must, linen on tables, custom service is excellent. Sat there and ate watching The Jeffersons.

The J&J Lounge is a neighborhood gem in 5th Ward which has existed for four decades. I've been curious about this spot for a long time, and finally visited recently. My order included fried catfish, garden salad, fries and toast. Everything tasted great. The food was brought to the table rather quickly. Hats off to chef and Ms. Tori, who is kind, friendly and encouraged us to come back. This is definitely the kind of place which probably had a jukebox back in the day, and the big screen TV makes this a good spot to visit on game days. I definitely look forward to returning for the burger special on Tuesdays.

5 star alert! Support local businesses. First off the owner is there working the counter and is very friendly and makes you feel at home. Also the gentleman with the braids in glasses I guess he was one of the waiters was extremely helpful and very nice as well. My friend has been wanting me to come to this place for quite some time but somehow we just haven't had a chance to come by. I'm very glad we stopped in today because the food and service was absolutely amazing. Food : this Has to be the best pork chop I've ever had in my life. Before coming here my favorite pork chop used to be the one you get it Perry's on Fridays. This pork chop is much better, much more tender as well. This pork chop full flavor, like I said it's the best pork chop I've ever had in my life. I was very happy with it. He also tops it with like three or four nice sized grilled shrimp and some and andouille sausage as well. The gravy and rice have a crawfish in there as well. You can tell they went out of their way to make sure this meal was amazing. Everything was really good. Even the salad they brought out was really good. I will definitely come back and try more things off their menu. The burgers look amazing, the wings look amazing, this looks like a really good place to eat. Overall. You cannot go wrong. I felt like I walked into a time capsule. I felt like I walked into the either the 1970s or the 1980s. It's a really nostalgic feel when you go in there. I have to give them mad props for keeping that look because it's a very distinct look. It feels like you're just stepping into a time capsule. Like I said the service was great and I'm very happy I stopped in today. I'm not sure how long they been here but I suspect I've been here quite a while and I also believe they will be here for many years to come. Do yourself a favor and stop on in and give JJ lounge a try.

This is my favorite neighborhood spot for a burger. I normally go on Tuesday for the special--a burger, fries, and a drink for $6. I get the grilled shrimp burger. They are busy especially on Tuesdays so call your order in. I'm not sure if people are dining in due to COVID but they do have seating inside and a small patio outside. It's a neighborhood GEM in the Historic 5th Ward!

I got everything I asked for. I got there rush when they opened so I just wanted to try something to go for lunch. The cheeseburger was great, juicy and charbroiled seemed like. The mac and cheese is stupendous. Sharp and Cheesy. The green beans are hard to mess up so they were good too. The place is small but quiant.

If you wantva real homemade burger then this is the spot!!! Last Friday I ordered burgers for me and my friends. Usually we eat and talk well there was no talking while we ate these burgers. They are so good, we are all focused on the deliciousness. Then the next Tuedsay they said hey Frankie can we get those burgers again I was like YES! YES! YES! This time I tried the fried porkchop burger and it was so good. Listen, yall go there and get those burgers especially on Tuesday, they offer a discount on Tuesdays.

Great little spot. I had the wings and fries. The wings were so crispy! The owner was also very friendly. So you get good food and get to support a local business. Recommend!

We are supporting our black owned businesses and after scrolling through my list ; I came across this little jewel! They have a set up where you can pay online using the Clover system. Pick was supposed to be 20 minutes, but I always give more time than needed because our food wasn't ready. For me it's expected when food is made to order plus we didn't wait anymore than10 minutes and she brought out food to the car. Everything was delicious; we also ordered a burger basket and my mom called to ask where it was from because it was so good! If you're in the area or you wanna take a drive the food is worth it!

Credence -- Where Live Fire Becomes Language and Houston Becomes Art…read more Credence isn't just a restaurant; it's a declaration written in flame. The moment you step inside, the room opens like a long exhale -- wide, airy, and confident, anchored by an open kitchen that glows with the kind of live fire that doesn't simply cook food but tells stories. This is Houston hospitality raised to its highest register, the kind that once earned a Michelin Star for service and still moves with the quiet pride of a place that knows exactly what it's doing. Chef Levi Goode's first brick‑and‑mortar feels like a culmination -- a fifth‑generation Texan with classical training finally building a home where both halves of his identity can stretch their legs. You taste the lineage in the smoke, the discipline in the technique, and the ambition in the menu, which reads like a love letter to Gulf waters, ranch land, and the elemental power of fire. Start with the seafood tower if you want to understand Credence's worldview: fresh, cold, towering abundance arranged with the precision of someone who respects the ocean as much as the plate. The smoked tuna dip is a quiet masterpiece -- silky, savory, and carrying a whisper of smoke that feels like a signature. But the deviled crab? That's where the kitchen shows off. The crab arrives tossed in a smoky tomato butter that clings to every fold, every shred, every hidden corner. Then comes the monkey bread -- warm, soft, pull‑apart temptation -- the kind of bread that makes you forget your manners and commit fully to the moment. But the flame is the true narrator here. It guides the entrées, sets the rhythm, and crowns the showpieces. The whole duck is a spectacle, a celebration, a feast meant for people who appreciate craft and aren't afraid of abundance. It arrives whole (no head), lacquered and glistening, with two legs transformed into confit jewels -- tender, rich, and decadent enough to make you pause mid‑bite. This is not a solo mission; bring a friend or two unless you plan to make a memory out of leftovers. If beef is your compass, the prime dry‑aged New York strip is a study in restraint and precision. Charred edges, deep flavor, and that unmistakable live‑fire signature that makes you wonder why you ever settled for anything cooked on a quiet grill. Dessert at Credence is not an afterthought -- it's a finale. The brown butter Bundt cake arrives warm and fragrant, crowned with chantilly cream that melts into every ridge. It's sized for a crowd, but sharing becomes a philosophical dilemma. Credence is not cheap, but it is honest. Every dollar is accounted for in intention, detail, and execution. This is Houston -- bold, generous, and unafraid -- translated into food, flame, and service. A restaurant that honors the land, the lineage, and the craft, all at once.

If you enjoy decadent food, Credence is the spot! The interior is refined but still welcoming and…read morelively with Southern charm. Service was amazing-- we loved our waiter who was a combination of polite, funny, and knowledgeable, and everyone gave us a smile. All the dishes were beautifully presented and flavorful but definitely on the heavier side. - Beet salad (5/5)-- wow, never had a beet salad like this one before! So much flavor with a tanginess from vinegar sweetened by the blueberries and beets. The beets didn't taste very earthy (aka like dirt) compared to most beet salad. This was really well executed :) - Caesar salad (3.5/5)-- Credence's spin on Caesar, which according to my Caesar salad pro diner, didn't really taste like Caesar salad. Also very tangy and tart but the pro still enjoyed it as a salad dish. - Roasted cabbage (4/5)-- big fan of the way they roasted this, perfect tenderness without being cabbage mush! Definitely a heavy dish, especially for a vegetable option, as it was swimming in a butter cream sauce that started to congeal as it cooled off. Would choose this more as an indulgent appetizer rather than a healthy veggie option. I wonder if one could ask for the sauce on the side... - Tuna tostada (3.5/5)-- if you like strong flavors, this one packs a punch. The gochujang aioli beneath the tuna is really concentrated, making it difficult to taste the actual tuna. There's a bit of heat but thankfully I wouldn't say it was spicy. Fun to try. The tostada itself was very dense and almost a bit bread-y versus a crispy chip texture. - Crab fried rice (4/5)-- comes with lobster foam that is mixed table side and a generous amount of crabmeat lumps. The rice actually had a nice texture without being too... grainy / individualized, but it was too salty for me. - Akaushi Wagyu beef (4.5/5)-- loved the texture which was tender but with some chew (was expecting more of a melt-in-the-mouth texture though) and the veggies that it came with. It was heavily salted, too much so for me. Would've been perfect with less salt since there's already a chimichurri sauce with it. - Peanut butter tart (4.5/5)-- peanut butter lovers rejoice! The chocolate filling was rich, thick, and sweet which was complemented nicely with the whipped cream (not sweet at all). The peanut flavor really shined. The crust didn't have much of a taste by itself and was sandy in texture, not sure if on purpose or over-baked and dried out. Either way, the tart looked impressive when it arrived and was delectable-- my favorite bite of the night! Overall a nice experience! Although there was a mess up and the rest of our two salads and crab rice wasn't packed with our other food to take home; I was pretty sad about that since it was quite a bit of food (and $$). I might return for that peanut butter tart, but everything else was too heavy and too salty for me. I'm personally not a huge butter fan, but if you are, definitely make a reservation for a special occasion or date!

Our waitress was fantastic and the gentleman who helped refill our drink orders was very attentive and helpful. The food was good but based on the reviews, I was expecting Great. We ordered: Sicilian Tar Tar, Arancini, Cappelletti, Orecchiette, and Tiramisu. The Sicilian Tar Tar was very fresh and light however, the star dish of the evening was the complimentary bread basket. The breads are baked in-house so they tasted very fresh and so delicious. I would definitely return for the bread basket and to try other dishes but I would not order the Cappelletti or Orecchiette again. Both dishes were more on the bland side and the Tiramisu was just okay to me. Perhaps the ladyfingers were soaked too long or something because I didn't get any texture of it. I also did not taste any coffee flavor. I definitely would not order that again.

She was short and blank with us until she realized we're very nice lol and by the end, her tone and energy had completely shifted for the better. The foreign object: about 2/3 of the way through the meal, I bit into a small piece of blue plastic. Instead, it is about the way we were treated by the hospitality manager, Kryssalyn Bayne. Our party consisted of five people, including a 97-year-old senior citizen. When we arrived, four of the five members of our party were present, and there were no guests waiting to be seated. However, Ms. Bayne was focused solely on the fact that one member of our party had not yet arrived. She informed us that other guests had been seated because they had called ahead, although this option had never been communicated to us during any of our previous visits. What was most concerning was not the seating policy itself, but the manner in which we were treated. Ms. Bayne's demeanor was loud, confrontational, and, in our opinion, disrespectful. We had all just come from church and were simply trying to understand the restaurant's policy. When I politely suggested that she lower her voice, she responded by accusing me of speaking disrespectfully to her staff, despite the fact that I had not spoken to anyone other than her. Grace's has always been known for its hospitality, which made this experience especially disappointing. I believe the front-of-house staff, and particularly those in leadership positions, would benefit from additional training in customer service, de-escalation, and professional communication. Every guest deserves to be treated with courtesy and respect, regardless of the circumstances. Unfortunately, this interaction overshadowed what should have been a pleasant meal and family gathering. We were seated at Table 14 & served by Mr Lewis who was a breath of fresh air. The food was good despite the entry.

Their Prosecco was delicious and perfectly complemented the food. The Cheeseburger Egg Rolls were definitely the highlight of my visit. They were crispy on the outside, flavorful on the inside, and served with a delicious dipping sauce. It's such a creative appetizer and an absolute must-try! The service was also outstanding. The staff was friendly, attentive, and professional throughout our visit. They made sure we had everything we needed without making us feel rushed, and their high-quality service made the experience even more enjoyable. Great drinks, delicious food, a pleasant atmosphere, and excellent customer service. I will definitely be coming back!

It's crazy to think in the sea of choices we have in Houston that it has been nearly a decade and a…read morehalf since Matt Brice opened the original location in the River Oaks area where Branch Water Tavern operated. When out of town business visitors come to Houston and seek balance, this is one of those spots worth paying a visit. Having this location downtown the last couple of years has been more convenient for those working in the area. Vibe / Interior - 4.5* So how has this spot managed to compete and survive in the Houston food scene? Well, there's a lot to unpack but I will say one perspective is the effort for balance. When you walk in you will get a sense of how well it toes the line between not being too upscale and pretentious yet not solely casual when it comes to the vibe. Someone in a business suit will fit in just as well as someone in a soccer jersey catching the World Cup. Food & Drink - 4* Balance shows up here too. They have a good selection of options from starters such as sticky ribs, bang bang shrimp, smoked pork belly, or maybe some oysters, poke, or kung pao calamari? For entrees you can go a little lighter with a salad or fresh fish or dive off the deep end with a chicken fried steak or pork chop. Whiskey, wine, or beer? Or a cocktail? They have a bit of anything you may fancy. Their cocktails aren't overly creative but they have plenty of the classics. I'm not going to sit here and say that any of their dishes will be the best in town. What I will say is they do tend to be above average. Again, it's about choice and balance. Service - 4* I've not experienced bad service here. The servers are always attentive and check in frequently. Most will make good recommendations dependent on what you're looking for. If there's only one area that I've found can be a little lagging sometimes is the close out. While they do check in during your visit, getting the bill/check and getting out can be a bit slow, but it isn't terrible. Cost/Pricing - 3.75* I'm not going to say their pricing is excellent, but it finds balance again. They aren't unapproachable but they aren't the cheapest. They do tend to deliver good portion sizes and higher quality than other establishments for what they serve. Overall - 4* Support local establishments, especially when visiting such a diverse city like Houston. If you find yourself downtown looking for an approachable restaurant where all are welcome, pay a visit here!

If the onion rings were less salty, they would be the best in Houston. Southern cooking. Comfort foods. Good recipes. Ambiance top notch. Fun place. But they kindly make a less salty batch for me when I request it. Much appreciated. Wondering how many people don't dine there because they don't know you can request less salty food?

I almost wish the batter was a bit more crispy. Also - it could've used a bit more flavor. Maybe more flavorful gravy? But it was cooked well and was pretty yummy. As for the sides - I was letdown by the French fries... they were dry and also a little bland. The Texas toast was good though & the green beans were nice and flavorful. The Mac and cheese was decent too. I was impressed with the service here. No line to order & even with a packed restaurant our food came out super quick. Which was awesome because we were starving!! The ambiance gave classic cafeteria vibes. Lots of seating and some nice decorations. They have both indoor and outdoor seats. This is an "order at the counter" place (which surprised me at first). Parking was a bit of a challenge. We had to park in the overflow garage across the street.
