Let's set the scene guys...It was a glorious Good Friday and I was on the hunt for some good catfish. After research I found myself at Butter Funk kitchen. Want to start by saying I loved the atmosphere. Loved being able to sit at a bar, loved the music, and service was superb. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Catfish was pretty good. It had the perfect crunch and a plentiful portion so no complaints. Sides were good but not something I'd rave about. The étouffée was pretty solid but the Brussels could've been better. Maybe seasoning them a little more, cutting them in halves, and charring them would've done the job. Peach cobbler was so yummy. I loveeeee how they have offer for preferences with the peach cobbler (more crust, more filling, or neutral) because I personally love more crust. Kool aid was good but could stand to be just a tad bit less sweet with more flavor. All in all if you have a catfish craving and want good vibes and service I'd 1000% endorse this spot. read more

I've heard so much about it so I was excited....... so walking in the first thing that hit me was the heat. The A/C was broken. This is Houston. In June. Ain't no way - so i ordered my food to go, only to find out they only serve in to go containers anyway - okkkkk. I got the catfish plate with red beans, dirty rice and an extra side of greens. The fish was great. Big pieces, well seasoned, fried perfectly - 9/10. the dirty rice was don well too - 7/10. The red beans were ok, nothing special, but not bad either - 6/10. The GREEENS tho.... 1/10. NOPE - never again. Glory canned greens with a whisper of a thought of seasoning and half a gallon of pepper sauce. While waiting for my food, a lady already seated and eating starting having an episode from being overheated. You have an online ordering system - why state one time if you aren't able to meet it. This is a self made issue. We waited more than an hour for something they said would take 15 min. This alone makes this a 2 star place. Yall have to do better. The food was ok. The sides really didn't shine. There was far too much rice in the gumbo, red beans, and etouffee not enough of anything else. My husband loved the etouffee and it was the most well balanced of the sides. The Mac and cheese reminded me of elevated box mix but the fried chicken, catfish, and shrimp were amazing. So crispy, insanely well fried. I liked the cornbread although it is quite sweet. Butter Funk Kitchen was a solid five-star experience. The food was excellent, the customer service was just as good, and everyone was genuinely friendly and welcoming. I ordered the fried catfish with crawfish étouffée and greens, and everything was on point. The catfish was crispy, well-seasoned, and cooked perfectly. Both sides were really good as well. One thing that definitely stood out was the portion size. They give you a LOT of food, so for the price point, you're definitely getting your money's worth. Great value without sacrificing quality. I had the 2 fried catfish plate with 2 sides I chose mac & cheese, red beans and rice. Omg... 1st time here and this place surprised me and didn't disappoint!!! Usually social media hype will get you disappointed, but for the first time I found some fresh hot fried hard catfish (I requested fried hard) and creamy cheese mac omg and the cornbread....... Next time im ordering a box of cornbread if i can. Also let me not leave out the red beans and rice... very flavorful and just hardy homemade taste. Was in the neighborhood and decided to see what Keith Lee was raving about, unfortunately some of the items we wanted to try weren't available . We settled on a few items and got them to go. Atmosphere was inviting and friendly service was nice and the food is cooked to order so don't be in a rush . We had the fried pork chops and Fried fish it came with 2 sides. we opted for collard greens and macaroni and cheese with and order of the boudin egg rolls. Mac and cheese and the cornbread was good. Good soul food with a great vibe and music that really sets the tone. The bartender/cashier was handling everything with ease...friendly, attentive, and clearly on top of her work. I've been wanting to try this place for a while but was never in the area. Finally was nearby and went to try it togo. There were a few high tables and seats around the bar for those dining in and a lot of people doing togo/pickups. I really like the variety of options on the menu. I ordered the fried catfish and shrimp basket with lemon pepper seasoning & koolaid. It was a pretty big serving which was good. However, it was a bit too salty for me. This is my first time here. I ordered the catfish meal with two sides. The sides I got were mashed potatoes and gumbo. The catfish was very flavorful and seasoned. I enjoyed it. The mashed potatoes were homemade and fresh. I also enjoyed that and the gumbo was very good. I also got hot mixed with lemon pepper chicken wings, which I thought were great. For my side I received the red beans and rice. I didn't care for it too much but Other people had it and really enjoyed it. So it would be fair for me to say that I am just not a person. First time, there's so much to try... the fish, pork chops... peach cobbler.. whew but I had the wings, brussel sprouts and boudin eggrolls. The boudin eggrolls could use some work -- fried to perfection but missing some flavor. The Buffalo lemon pepper and hot honey were sooo good! I love brussel sprouts and they definitely delivered. I believe the lady said they have a smothered option too, but will confirm next visit. Food was good and hot. I tried to be healthier and get veggies not mac and cheese and okra. I always like the greens, they got great flavor. Been trying to make a comeback myself on Brussel sprouts. They were always so bitter when my mother made em. Had em grilled and sautéed in some places and they were ok to good. These had more bitterness. Butter Funk Kitchen is one of those neighborhood hidden gems which deserves a bigger following. I knew about Butter Funk before Keith Lee's visit, but his positive endorsement was the catalyst that inspired me to pay this restaurant a visit. The service here is great and the front of house staff are both attentive and kind. Very warm spirited atmosphere. Regarding ambience on the sonic front, where else can you go during the holidays and hear The Temptations' "Silent Night"? And the wall decorations are intriguing. I really liked the display of album covers and the red wall as a backdrop is unique. Outside, the signage with the melting butter looks really cool. Regarding the culinary offerings, I'm still stuck on the fried catfish (5/5), which is so delicious and has a great flavor. I've been here twice and ordered catfish both times. The red beans and rice (3/5) could use more seasoning and sausage, like Keith Lee stated. The greens (4/5) were good both times, but the latest order was overstuffed with what I'm guessing was turkey leg meat. I tend to prefer baked mac and cheese, so almost everyone in Houston makes it wrong in my opinion (Haha!), and I tend to think Butter Funk's mac is just an afterthought for the chef. But I do love the cornbread here. Definitely looking forward to trying other items on the menu. read more

Finally, I am able to scratch one of Keith Lee's pop-up visit restaurants off my list! If you didn't know, Keith Lee, a world renowned food critic who reviews restaurants that need exposure to the right consumers to support the existence of their small businesses made a stop in Houston last year during his tour. His marketing and reviews have turned almost folding and closing restaurants into thriving enterprises after his reviews in effect. It's an incredible narrative that you can't help applaud, so I decided to keep the energy going and partake in some comfort food on Sunday after church and see if Keith Lee was just bluffin or was he on point with his review of Butter Funk Kitchen. I really had a hankering for some really good catfish. Memories of KL's video on Butter Funk Kitchen came to mind as he bite into the fish. Rewatching the video on IG, I was sold. Online ordering site is user-friendly with various food delivery options to use for pick up or delivery. I used Grubhub for this order since I already had a debit card attached to this account. Plus, Grubhub seems to have the same prices you'd pay for the food if you walked in the restaurant for a take out order or ordered straight from the restaurant's website. Anywho, I had the estimated time for the order and drove straight there. Parking, however, is a challenge. I knew it would be since I drive through Sunnyside going to work quite frequently. I ended up parking in front of the dumpster, waiting for anyone to leave to legally park and get my order. Sure enough, someone did leave and moved my vehicle to the side of the restaurant to wait until Grubhub said my order was ready. Soon as I saw the ready notice, I hopped out and entered in. Small spot - definitely more of a grab and go location, with a small bar for serving frozen concotions. They looked good, but I didn't want to go back to my car and get money to get one. Next time. I was greeted and given my order, which was tied down and in a black bag. Impressive to me, the ticket order had the full name of my food preparer. That told me right away that Butter Funk wants you to give them credit for their food and will hold people accountable if it's not on point. Therefore, let me give credit to my server A. Johnson, who made my day with this 2 piece catfish, fried to perfection! Seasoning - just enough and not too salty. Crispy and golden fried to just the right crispyness. Plus, the filets were HUGE. They didn't cheap me by splitting a filet into 2 pieces and selling it as one. These were some for REAL filets!!! Greens were oh so flavorful and not overcooked. I don't like a bunch of meat in my greens, so a few pieces for flavor were adequate for me. Once more, the golden honey cornbread complimented my greens to perfection. I used it to sope the juice from the greens and eat every single bite. I'd agree with Keith that the macaroni and cheese is not the best, but it's not the worst I've had either. It's a little on the dry side. Smaller noodles would probably leave more creaminess and moisture in the pasta, but I promise you - it didn't get thrown away. It wasn't that bad. All in all, BFK is the real deal when it comes to confort food. I would certainly come back and get their catfish any day of the week. Don't get me wrong, the food, service and overall atmosphere is nice! However I wouldn't recommend this place for breakfast. I had the chicken and waffles but the waffles tasted very box mixed rather than restaurant quality. The chicken was very good!! I normally go for their soul food because it's 9/10 but breakfast I would say is a 6/10. You'd do better going to ihop for breakfast. My boyfriend and I stopped in here before we went to Fete Studio for paint date night. He raved about how delicious the brunch was and wanted me to try them out, so we came for a late lunch. I ordered the fried chicken, and he ordered the fried pork chop. His pork chop was perfectly seasoned and fried, and I loved his dirty rice. I am way late to posting this review, but after I saw the influencer guy hit this place up, I wanted to make sure I came to echo his praises because they are well deserved and I love seeing little spots like this succeed! I stopped by here on the way home one night after searching for something serving some homestyle food. I am originally from South Louisiana, so I'm always a little cautious of "soul food" in other areas because I have been disappointed before. I was not disappointed here! We got a catfish plate with fries and shrimp with okra along with a side of crawfish etouffee and peach cobbler. It's in a small shopping strip. Since I went at night, parking was no issue, but during the day I could see it being a little crowded to maneuver around the small parking lot. A lady came to the counter immediately to take my order, very sweet. When she told me they also serve southern sweet tea and kool-aid I knew the food was going to be good. I haven't been offered kool-aid since I lived back home! Food came out quick and it was PIPING HOT. I mean too hot to even sneak a bite on the way home. I live about 15 minutes away and it was still plenty hot when I got home to eat. The catfish was a thicker cut than I prefer, which is not a criticism just a piece of info for people who may like the thin and crispy style rather than the thick cut filets. Everyone has a preference but I will say the fish was seasoned and cooked perfectly. No mushy half raw insides here. Fries were seasoned too! The shrimp was perfectly cooked and seasoned, not rubbery, okra as well. My favorite (and unfortunately forgot to take a photo of) was the etouffee. Thick, flavorful, rice was cooked well. I will absolutely get that again. The peach cobbler...yall that whole to go box was FULL of that dessert! I ate on that for an entire day They also had daiquiri machines and although didn't try them, there was a customer in there sampling some while I waited for my order and she was singing their praises. It's a small, quaint place. The food that I had was great which was the fried pork chop in the catfish. I got the fries, but the fries were basic fries. They had good seasoning on them but they were cooked extremely hard. The gumbo didn't have a good base. I went early and everything wasn't cooked yet. I understand now reviewed by Lee and of course we are going to have to be patient so they can get up to speed but when I went, it was before he went, and I pretty much had the same experience and critiques.
