4.5 I'd say. The only con was that we were seated outside in Texas summer weather, and they didn't have fans or umbrellas for the patio tables to the side. Luckily our server was able to move us to the covered outdoor seating after a little while which was a little better. The covered patio has fans. However, bonus for sitting outside is that they're having a promo during HRW where happy hour drink specials are going on all day. The food and drinks were all yummy though. We got the yum yum fries for the table to share. I ordered the duck duck shroom pizza and the aperol spritz. The portions of everyone's food were huge so I'd say a good bang for your buck. We experienced multiple servers with our table switch and they were all nice and helpful. read more

Located across the street from St. Thomas in a renovated house. Street parking is available in the surrounding area, they also offer parking validate in the near by garage. Getting seated was a little chaotic. Indoor seating was pretty limited and not managed well. We end up sitting on the patio (still pretty toasty around sunset time). The giant pretzel we ordered for appetizer was excellent, highlight of the meal. The sourdough pizzas were pretty thin, overall I'd give the pizzas a 3/5. Of the 4 pizzas we tried, my personal ranking: 1. Spicy Goat 2. Duck Duck Shroom 3. Heirloom Margherita 4. Sweet & Spicy Pepperoni. Service was also disorganized and a little slow. I'd come back if I'm craving that pretzel. read more

Great spot! They have a great kitchen menu and a big beer selection. They also offer cocktails, ciders, and NA. Kid-friendly (very kind and had kids menu available), and very nice staff. All the food was really tasty. We had a great time; the only downside was the Houston heat! We were sweating indoors, but were also sitting next to a door so that was probably part of it. Would definitely come back! read more

I finally visited Southern Yankee Crafthouse after receiving multiple rave reviews from my friends in the Montrose area. It's a good fusion between a sports bar and a tavern, giving a slightly elevated atmosphere to a casual dining experience. Their menu offers slightly upgraded versions of traditional bar fare. There were lots of appealing options, so I'll have to return to try more of their entrees! The food is made from scratch in the kitchen and arrived relatively quickly. I ended up choosing their burger, and it was super juicy. Their fries were also crispy and flavorful. Certain days of the week, they offer nightly specials, so I look forward to returning for more! read more

Been wanting to try this spot for a while and seeing it pop up on Yelp's top 100 made it feel like I had to go. Finally made my way out here and enjoyed myself overall. The staff were nice and my partner and I sat in their front patio as it was a nice Spring evening. They do a sort of fusion, pizza, seasonal menu type thing. We came on a Thursday and had a special of half off liquors so we each got a cocktail with our liquors of choice. We started with the yum yum fries which were very good. Battered fries covered in sweet, umami, slightly spicy sauces and various other toppings. They were a bit pricey for the portion though. I got the house kale caesar and added chicken to it. I got the large as I thought a small would be a side salad size but a large was definitely meant to be shared. The crutons were really good and I probably enjoyed that the most from my main. The salad itself was also good, nice caesar dressing, crunchy bitterish kale. The chicken was sort of a let down though and wasn't anything special. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and time here. I definitely want to come back and try some of their pizzas so will need to make a return trip! read more

To truly call this an all-star burger, I'll have to bring my boyfriend--he's the real burger connoisseur. That being said, I came here with some coworkers, and boy was I surprised! Usually I'm at least a little disappointed or underwhelmed by their food picks, but this time they proved their taste buds are actually pretty solid. The beer-battered fries were FIRE. Not a single soggy fry on my plate. And the 7 oz. burger? Cooked to a perfect medium-rare, with all those delicious juices spilling out in every bite... DIVINITY. The location itself was super cute--very Southern charm tucked into the middle of such an urban city. Our waitress handled all seven of us like a pro, kept everything moving, and somehow found that perfect balance of being attentive without constantly hovering. P.S. half of my coworkers ordered their craft burgers and the other half went with their pizzas--pretty solid choice. Crust was sourdough and the toppings were varied. The tops were DUCK AND BALSAMIC, SAUSAGE AND BURRATA, PEAR AND BLEU read more

After a long day of traveling to Houston we were looking for something simple and satisfying. Thankfully Yelp suggested this incredible restaurant and the food was incredible. Its indoor/outdoor vibe feels welcoming and its located close to so many landmarks with parking options nearby. While we ended up doing some take-out, just my experience going thru the order/pickup process tells me enough that we should dine in next time when we have more energy to do so. The restaurant has an incredible community feel to it and you can see the crowds of people all around the outside. You can tell immediately that this is a place that the community loves. We ordered via the Yelp order link and the food was made quicker than we expected and even some instructions on how to get to the front of the line to get your pickup. As a family who comes to Houston a few times a year, the food was so good that it's a shame we didn't find this place sooner. We tried to mix up our food order to experience a little of everything. The Smoked Ribeye Melt had the most delightful ciabatta bread that was perfectly soft on the inside with a light crunch to its exterior. Its ribeye was just as delicious and pairs well with the horseradish dipping sauce that is tasty without having too much of a bite to it. The Pear and Bleu pizza was a fantastic balance of sweet and salty that felt light yet satisfying. The flavor profile of the pizza as a whole surprised me. I don't normally go with fruit on my pizza but this was delicious. Finally we decided to go a little spicy with The Spicy Goat. This pizza is another one with a great mix of flavors but the mango habanero glaze is to die for. Yes, it will make your mouth on fire but for this who enjoy heat, this one will take this pizza to a whole other level. I highly recommend eating in if you have the social battery to do so as the dessert and beverage menu looks amazing. You never know, you might come in and make some new friends with the great vibes that this spot has. I know I'll definitely be looking forward to the next opportunity to soak it in next time. read more

We came here recently for dinner with friends and had a great experience. It's a converted house with a spacious patio out front and some seating in the back. If the weather is nice, go to the "backyard" of the house and there is plenty more outdoor seating back there. Bring your furry friend and enjoy one of the two patios together! We started off with draft beers. Our server was knowledgeable of all the beers they had on draft and made some good recommendations - all local beers from the greater Houston area. For food, we got the Yum Yum Fries, Garlic Honey Soy wings, Tom Yum wings, Spicy Goat pizza, and the Romesco pizza. The Yum Yum Fries were a great starter - the fries were crispy and the tangy sauce complemented them well. Both of the wings were quite meaty and flavorful; the tom yum flavor was surprisingly very resemblant of tom yum! The Spicy Goat pizza reminded me of the prosciutto & arugula pizzas offered at similar pizza joints. The Romesco pizza had to be my favorite of the night. While I don't normally like jalapeños on pizza, they went well on this one paired with the pepperonis and red onions; my favorite part was the crispy onion strings on top! I've also been here a couple other times for their Monday steak nights. It begins at 6pm (after happy hour concludes) and includes prime rib, mashed potatoes with onion strings, brussels sprouts, and a draft beer all for $25. Not a bad deal at all, and I think the prime rib cut is seasoned really well - not to forget you get a beer with it too. Southern Yankee Crafthouse is a great neighborhood spot with good food and plenty of drink options. Service was top notch throughout the night and if you're in the mood for wine after your meal, go check out Light Years next door! read more

Came in on a Saturday at 5 pm and sat on their balcony. Fair number of seats open both inside and out. Food 5/5: We ordered the truffle fries, crispy smoked porky belly, pistachio crusted lamb chops and bacon jammed Brussels sprouts. Also got a. Flight of beer. Everything tasted amazing, only small thing was the lamb chops could've been a little warmer. Highly recommend both apps Service 5/5: super friendly and helpful, food came out really fast Ambiance 4/5: low key casual ambiance, clean Value 4.5/5: great food for a pretty good price, similar quality to some of the nicer places in time without the fancy ambiance price tags Overall 4.8/5: will definitely be back to try some of their other options on the menu. read more

Southern Yankee captures the spirit of gastropubs and Montrose as a whole. It's a lively vibe that fits most occasions, hot or cold, indoors or outdoors. With indie music such as Tame Impala and Glass Animals playing through the speakers, it's just upbeat enough to spark a conversation with friends -- but not so rowdy that you're fighting to get a couple words in. They nailed the Southern Yankee Craft Burger. It contains a unique jalapeno bacon jam as well as more common ingredients such as pimento cheese and crispy onion rings. Excellent combination of flavor and will satisfy most people in most situations. The steak fries tasted decently seasoned as well. Having only 2 days to reconnect with friends and family, I'm glad I chose this gathering spot among all the others that Houston has to offer. It was a great experience all around! read more

My fiance and I have been wanting to try this place for years, and we were finally able to make it! I got a simple ranch water with one of their nicer blanco tequilas to start, and he got a pina colada type cocktail that tasted just like one but looked like a fancy cocktail. We aren't typically pina colada fans but it was delicious! I got the burger and with an up charge made my side of fries the yum yum fries. The fries were unique, delicious, and a good spice level. The burger's patty was a bit standard but the bun, pimento cheese, good tomato, and bacon jam definitely made the burger on another level. My fiance got the ciabatta burrata sandwich which was also delicious. He normally isn't a non meat eater but the sandwich was very filling. We also split the mango habanero wings which were good and spicy. You seat yourself and the servers come quickly and were helpful. The ambiance is cozy and friendly. First let me start by saying our overall experience was excellent. The food was great. However, we got the pork belly shareable, which was amazing. However, there was only 4 pieces and all the pictures on website show 5. Then there is the price $18. This was a bit much for 4 pieces of pork belly. We also had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich - absolutely amazing. It was also $18, however this was a good value. It was fresh, cooked perfectly, nice and juicy. The service was excellent, there was always someone checking on us. The atmosphere is casual and very relaxful. I would return again if in the area. read more

Top notch service when we came in for the first time for lunch today. We had smoked wings and the burger with fries. The fries are really good and I'm not a fry person. We thought the burger and fries were good as well. They cooked my burger well done as asked and the jalapeño bacon jam was delicious and not spicy. This is a nice spot with a big covered deck if you prefer to eat outside. Parking is tight but I'm they have a sign saying they validate for a parking garage. We took a Lyft and that made it easier. Overall, we like this place and appreciate the good service and fresh, good food. read more

We decided to celebrate August birthdays celebration with our friends here. It was a pretty chill and casual place with awesome service. We were seated in the front patio because we had a big group and their front patio is covered with fans but this Houston heat was just unbearable. Our server, Steven, was nice enough to move us inside when we asked him so we were really grateful for that!! My husband and I opted to order from Houston Restaurant Weeks menu. I ordered the Ribbon Salad, Truffle Bianca Pizza, Fruit Tart. The ribbon salad and fruit tart were good. However, the truffle bianca pizza definitely had the truffle but I was not amazed by it. I had brunch with my girlfriends here a couple months ago. My friend had recommended it. Didn't realize it was close to where we lived. Park across the street in the church lot, but be careful crossing the street. It was a hot day, so we found a large table inside. There's a small covered patio seating in the front as you walk in. Service was great throughout. Each of us ordered a different item that we each got to try or share. Zero Proof Piña de Nada - Too sweet. Kind of tasted like fruit punch. Tikka masala pizza - Flavorful. Much like having tikka masala with naan. Crispy pork belly - Fair. Some parts were dry and other pieces, the fat wasn't rendered enough which made it chewy. Didn't have the melt-in-your-mouth feel. The butternut squash and goat cheese was good with it. Brussels sprouts - I liked them. Straightforward. The glaze wasn't too sweet. Roasted well. Fried green tomatoes - Good but still a bit tart and ripe. The jalapeño bacon jam (really sweet) and pimento cheese overpowered the whole dish. Pretzel bread puddin' French toast with bacon - my favorite of all the things we've tried minus the chocolate cookie skillet. I thought the French toast was amazing. I love bread pudding, so this was on point. Cast iron chocolate chip cookie with vanilla bean ice cream - Saw this delivered to another table from afar. Inquired about it, and my girlfriends and I had to have it. It was served bubbling hot and fresh with vanilla bean ice cream. Hard to eat cause it was so hot and would burn your tongue but so worth it! I'd come back for the French toast and dessert. Would like to try other dishes. read more

We ordered the margherita pizza and asked if it was the pizza with the green sauce swirled on it in the photos we saw online and was told it was. When the pizza came out with cherry tomatoes covered on it and white sauce, nothing like a traditional margherita pizza or what we described to the waiter, we found the photo online to clarify and asked for the correct pizza. The server that misinformed us brought over Christina who told us that the kitchen was closed (12 mins prior) and she does nothing after her kitchen closes. We asked for it to be removed from our bill which she said she would not do but only that it was salty. (Why be rude and say you would not do it?) We immediately left the restaurant because Christina was incredibly rude to us. Why even have a service establishment selling $20 personal sized pizzas? The way she acted she should sell pizzas out the back of a pick up truck, that's the type of service she gave to us. Ambiance and service not friendly. I've driven past the Southern Yankee countless times and finally decided it was time to stop in for lunch. Designated parking is across the street and for a weekend there was a lot of available spaces. It was a little too hot for us to sit outside so we opted for a table inside. This place is a decent size. Trendy, clean, and is fast paced. Menu had a wide range of options. We went with the grinder and wings. The food was great. Wings were charred perfectly and flavorful, grinder was classic, and fries were a great addition. Service was friendly and fast. My only con... wings were $14 a pound. I got 6. That's a little steep for me considering there are no sides and it just doesn't seem like a good deal. read more

How have I never been here??? After seeing reviews last night, I made sure to come hungry and now I'm so stuffed but can't wait to return. Ok sadly to say, I never finished my initial review. I have been here 4x's since when I started this review. I must say everyone is always helpful and everything we've ever ordered has been delicious!! The pretzels are always a must as they are made fresh and seasoned with just the right amount of butter and salt. Mmm good . I have also ordered the fried green tomatoes (in the past) and the pork belly bites. Both are large enough portions to share with the table. My go to entree is always the hot-n-crunchy trout. It's two filets and also shareable. My husband and son ordered a variety of wings and those too were delicious. For dessert, my son ordered the craft house peach cobbler. I just couldn't wait until the Fall/Winter menu came out with their Chicken Pot Pie on it. I had it last year and I commented that it was the best that I had ever had. We took a friend and touted it but when we got it in had so much salt that we couldn't eat it. We ate around the (once fabulous crust) but it was still salty. My wife had the Salmon and it was the same. We complained about it, the manager came over to apologize and that was it. I should have told them to take our meals off but when the check came out and because of how loud it was we just left.
