Started with a dozen and we figured out that we liked the Matagorda Pearls the most, so ordered another dozen of those. They were pretty fresh and some large. My one regret from my time here is that I was so caught up in the experience that I didn't take more pictures! I hadn't heard of this restaurant until I came here with a group and I'm so glad I did! The interior is bustling and the space is used impressively, appearing full but not over crowded. The decor is charming and eclectic and classy. Our waiter was amazing and very attentive! Went to try the fried chicken, and it did not disappoint. The chicken was hot, crispy, and juicy! I added hot sauce to it because why not! I tried the avocado sauce which had a cumin taste it. La Lucha is officially on my "take everyone who visits me" list. We came for happy hour and everything was so good! The drinks were great, strong, and well-balanced. But the real star for me? The deviled eggs topped with shrimp. So good. I would order those again without hesitation. They also had a few different types of oysters available, which I appreciated because it gave options depending on your preference. I tried them since they were very decently priced during happy hour. Oysters are not usually my favorite, but my friend absolutely loved them so if you are an oyster person, you will be happy here. My friend and I split the chicken platter with a side of biscuits, and it was perfect for sharing. I loved that you can choose between two different sauces for the chicken, which made it feel a little customizable. The chicken was crispy and flavorful, and the biscuits were incredible: fluffy, buttery, and completely worth it. We sat at the bar, which made the experience even better. The first time I came here, I'm sad to say was two years ago with some friends that lived in the neighborhood, and I'd yet to make it back since then. This place to me is all it was the first time and more and I need to make this a regular stop! We came out for dinner to celebrate a friend and made a reservation online. As I pulled into the parking lot, valet is available, which is nice when it's dark out to not have to look for parking. Up on entering La Lucha, I love love love how warm and cozy the place feels. I was greeted immediately with the two hosts, that had great smiles, and a delight. I let them know I was early and would grab a bevvy at the bar while I waited for the rest of my party. The bar was packed! Rightfully so! They have a great collection of all the things, this night I was in the mood for an old fashioned. I wasn't sure which whiskey I wanted to go with and one of the servers quickly made a suggestion and said I couldn't go wrong, and he was right! Went with a Bulleit for the selection. The bartender took time and care to make the bevvy, she was super sweet, and the barstaff really seemed to have a great flow all together. I saw a little flame come from a lighter and the orange, and as she set it in front of me, you could smell the citrus flavors of the beverage! It was smooth and light. A little sweeter than I am used to, but still great for a cold night! Right as I took my first sip, my party arrived!! We were seated not too long after they arrived in a nice cozy corner of the restaurant. I think I love most about this place is I didn't feel like we were in a restaurant. The noise level was quiet, the music was great, and I just felt like we were in our own little bubble! The great thing about La Lucha is the family style eating you can do. Everything can be shared, and everything we shared!! We started off ordering the Whole Fried Chicken because we knew it would take a while to cook. I recently came here with friends to celebrate a special occasion and it has been on my list for a while (specifically for the fried chicken!) so I was super excited to come here. We arrived a little earlier than our reservation, so we waited at the bar and some in our group ordered cocktails to start the night. We were seated promptly at our reservation time and our server, Chris, was super friendly from the get-go. For some of us first-timers, we were quite inquisitive about various items on the menu, and Chris welcomed any and all questions. Great service! For food, our group put in our order the whole fried chicken first since this takes a bit longer to come out. We started out with the Shrimp & Pork Dumplings and the Blue Crab Chowder Fries. The dumplings were very flavorful and I liked the chili crisp that was spread throughout. The fries...how has anyone not thought of loading fries with clam chowder until this!? This was a fantastic combination and even though the chowder came on the side, we poured it all over the fries to enjoy. Next our order of raw oysters came out. These are gulf oysters, so not the best (or biggest) from others I've had, but the taste was on point. Since these don't come in a half-dozen or dozen, we ordered just enough so that each person in our group could try one of each oyster between two different types we agreed upon from the menu. The whole chicken came out, which was my favorite. It came out as about 12 pieces with 3 dipping sauces: a cilantro-based sauce, a mayonnaise-based sauce, and a spicy honey. My favorite of these was the cilantro-based one because of the contrast it provided to the fried chicken. The fried chicken itself was extremely crispy on the outside, very moist with plenty of juice on the inside. I was a bit skeptical at $45 for a chicken knowing that I can get a way better deal at Popeye's, but this definitely gives them a run of their money. Would totally order again. We also ordered the Redfish on the Half Shell and the brussels sprouts side. The redfish was very flavorful and I liked the pecan brown butter it was glazed with. The "half shell" is actually just half of its (cooked) skin. While the fish is bone-in and one side of the skin is still on, it was still easy to get the meat out of it. The brussels sprouts had good flavor to them but I just wish they were flash-fried for that extra crispiness. To drink, I got the You're Welcome, which is their version of a Manhattan. It was definitely boozy and the combination of bourbon and rye made for a good mixed drink. While the menu is somewhat small and I feel like we tried the highlights, I would come back to try other items like the Tuna Tostada, Vietnamese Sticky Wings, and the Pharmacy Burger. Wow! I don't remember the last time I ate somewhere where EVERYTHING was amazing! The food, the drinks and the service were phenomenal! We tried all 6 of their oysters on the half shell. Every one was fresh and delicious. We also had the deviled eggs. Oh my gosh! The fried shrimp on top were battered and fried to perfection! (Even better than Liberty Kitchen's deviled eggs.) I've heard good things about La Lucha in the Houston Heights and went there for a friend's birthday. It was a packed house and we didn't have a reservation but we were able to be seated immediately at the bar. I have been dying to try their blue crab chowder fries but they unfortunately rotated it off of their menu less than a month before we came we ended up ordering the half fried chicken special, LA crawfish bread, shrimp and pork dumplings, and oysters. For the oysters, they have 5 special kinds and they come with cocktail sauce, pickle juice mignonette, and horseradish, as well as some crackers and hot sauce. They have an open window where you can watch a worker chuck oysters open. The oysters were decently sized, refreshing, and tasty. I then tried the shrimp and pork dumpling appetizer. It comes with a Szechuan sauce and is topped with coriander and fried onions. It's not anything crazy but I liked it for what it was. It wasn't spicy at all and I couldn't really taste a Szechuan taste. I would still eat these up though. The LA crawfish bread is a pressed po boy and comes with a parsley salad. I could kind of taste the crawfish in here but it was very faint. The half fried chicken came with biscuits, pickles, seasonal ham, and a side of sauce. We upgraded to get all 2 sauces: oyster mayo, honey sambal, and green harissa. I loved both the oyster mayo and green harissa. The mayo is more smoky and the harissa is almost like one of those cilantro based salsas. The chicken itself was above average but not crazyyy. It chicken skin has a nice crunch but some of it had too much coating. The meat itself was good but could be more juicier. The sauces are what makes it so good. When we arrived, we did have a short wait. The restaurant was busy, which made sense since it was the last weekend before Christmas. On this occasion a friend of mine recently moved into town and it was his birthday and thought he and others would really appreciate the menu and I wasn't disappointed. They loved it! I would have like to order everything on the menu but we weren't so hungry that all of us could eat that much food, but we did land on getting the whole fried chicken, that served with biscuits, pickles, sauce and seasonal jam. Ultimately, I decided to order an espresso martini, the chicken and pork dumplings that had a super spicy and flavorful Szechuan sauce, and the half a bird whose skin was crispy, crunchy, and packed with so much flavor! I was shocked by how much chicken comprised a half an order, but at a $24 price point that seem to be an appropriate portion size. The biscuits that accompany the chicken would put Popeyes to shame and the jam that it was served with offer just the perfect amount of sweetness. I'd ordered a side of collard greens and they tasted like Thanksgiving. Our waitress, Taylor, was super attentive, and patient as we decided what to order; and the bus boy, Mr. Martin, was a joy to talk to as we bonded over our shared love of books. He even gave some recommendations for books we should listen to on Libby. The fact that La Lucha has tip-based valet parking made this an even more enjoyable visit because parking is extremely scarce in the area. Came across La Lucha on tiktok and heard rave reviews about it. Upon coming right before 1 pm on a Sunday afternoon, you can tell right off the bat that parking is an issue. There is no dedicated parking lot for the restaurant, only valet parking which had a line of at least 10 cars waiting to turn in for it. Thankfully there's free 2 hour parking in the lot across from the restaurant but it's pretty tight since it shares the space with the surrounding businesses. The doorway to walk into the restaurant is really small, almost hidden and the space narrow. When you walk in, it's super lively with somewhat of a mountain cabin-esque vibe and an open kitchen concept. When I asked for a table of 2, we were told there is an incoming reservation for 1:30 so we'd only have 50 min to eat which we were fine with and we appreciated the heads up. The menu is pretty small as they're mainly known for their fried chicken and oysters. We opted for the half chicken which came with biscuits, an order of 8 oysters (really cool that they have happy hour for oysters from open till 6 pm - $1.50 on select oysters), and deviled eggs. Everything was a hit. The oysters were relatively large and extremely fresh although I honestly couldn't tell the different between the two types we ordered. The deviled eggs came with popcorn shrimp on top that were nice and flakey. And the fried chicken - holy cow. The skin is so thin and crispy, and the meat is so tender and juicy, even the breast meat. The chicken comes with some sliced pickles as well as a choice of sauce - we opted for some cilantro sauce but we honestly didn't even need it, the meat was already seasoned well enough as is. Sat at the bar which is full counter service, the bar staff was great! Provided suggestions popular dishes and quick with service. 10 out of 10 however, Yuck! The woman who brought out the plates barely washed her hands in the restroom (she was not a bartender, possibly the food runner) just quickly rinsed them. How would I know? When I went in to wash my hands she was coming out of the stall in the restroom and proceeded to rinse her hands very briefly with water only (maybe 2-3 seconds) with NO soap and then walked out. I was not going to mention it until I see that she brought my food items over to me afterwards and proceeded to touch rearrange my drinking glass and items away to make room. Naturally, it was off putting as we have seen effects of not washing hands properly for health reasons. After the bartender saw my distain and asked if everything was all right, I briefly mentioned that I noticed the woman that just set my food on the counter was in the restroom earlier and did not wash her hands and I was indifferent about eating the meal. The bartender quickly apologized offered to make the food again but I quickly declined. I let him know it was not his fault at all, and that I didn't want to complain or make a big fuss just was contemplating at the moment and trying to process which just occurred. The manager CeCe was made aware and promptly came over to discuss the situation. I was thankful she was made aware so quickly but was truly not wanting to make a big deal out of it however very grateful that she did have that conversation with me. Exceptional customer service from the team members, I appreciated their professionalism. She helped to resolve my uncertainty by offering helpful solutions. First I would like to warn that parking here is valet only. Finding the door was a little weird as it blends in but it is literally right at the corner as you walk up from the parking. Now the food was a mixture of delicious and just ok. The oysters and tuna tostada were great. The blue crab chowder fries sounded amazing at first but as we began eating it there were two things that my friend and I agreed on. 1. The server let us know that they make everything to order and bring items out as they are ready, so they are fresh for the table. (7/10) Octopus a la plancha: This dish was the most disappointing to me because of how small it was. They charged $30 for a single octopus tentacle that was tough and overcooked. The flavors were also lackluster. As someone who loves octopus, this really missed the mark for me. (4/10) Grilled garlic parmesan oysters: These were okay. I was hoping for a more smoky/ grilled flavor, but all I could taste was the cheese. I would recommend getting the fresh ones instead. (5/10) Overall, I enjoyed my time at the restaurant and would definitely recommend people come for the oysters and fried chicken. The parking is valet, but they also have parking around the area that is free if you have some time to look around. Just an FYI it is a pretty tight restaurant from the inside. We had brought our baby and brought her car seat only bc her stroller would have taken up too much space. The staff was so accommodating so that was nice. Our waiter was great, super quick and attentive. He walked us through the menu which was helpful as first timers. Here is what we got- - Deviled Eggs with popcorn shrimp? 10/10. Freaking amazing. These were so delicious and so different! This was probably our favorite item and we wanted more as soon as they finished. - Tuna Tostada 10/10. This was a tostada with fresh raw tuna on top. It was dressed with onions, fresh lime, and avocado. It was so fresh and delicious. - Fried chicken and biscuits 8/10. This was really yummy! We got the full portion and felt silly because the half would have been more than enough for both of us..... the chicken was perfectly crispy and so tender. It came with biscuits and jam, and the chicken came with 3 different kinds of sauces which were unique and so good. It was so tender, seasoned perfectly, and juicy!! Everyone said it was the best fried chicken in Houston though. It's definitely delicious but I wouldn't say it's the best? I'm sad though bc we had leftover biscuits and our waiter didn't pack them he cleared the table and took them and we didn't realize until after. So that kind of made me upset because we were looking forward to having those biscuits as left overs! La Lucha was great! I've heard the hype... but I ended up not impressed! Their menu is very random to me. Lots of dishes from different ethnicities. I'm not seeing a cohesive theme going on with their offerings. For a place that wants you to share the dishes, the portions are pretty small (and expensive) so they "recommend" you to order an extra portion. Tuna Tostada: it's hard to go wrong with this. It was a simple, tasty dish that was hard to split amongst friends due to a cracker being hard to cut into. Fresh oysters: only a $1.50 each! They were indeed fresh although a bit small. The horseradish was a nice topping to have. Fried chicken: It was cooked fairly well. Crispy and not too dry on the inside, but the batter didn't taste very seasoned. The sauces on the side carried the fried chicken, particularly the sweet sambal. I just think there's so many other cheaper places to get solid fried chicken that's actually flavorful on its own. Grilled garlic Parmesan oysters: they looked stunning but unfortunately on the saltier side. Szechuan dumplings: The sauce was also a bit overwhelmingly salty and not much of that numbing Szechuan spice was present. Fries: Actually pretty good despite how simple they look. I liked the sauce on the side. Octopus a la plancha: Not pictured here but this was a joke to me. For over $30 you get one measly cooked tentacle... this is hardly enough to even feed one person, so imagine having to split it amongst 5 people! The octopus itself was a bit overcooked. The sauce was tangy but that's about all I could say. Please save your money and don't order this dish. Overall, this place is overpriced and misses the mark especially on their dishes from different cultures. Don't come here in a large group due to small portions. read more

Came with a larger group. We were given the table by the kitchen which was fun for the younger members of the family. The food did all look amazing coming out too. Staff were all great, seated us slightly early for the reservation. Then service during the meal was attentive and timely. My only regret was not ordering oysters, but next time for sure. Sort of bounced around the menu though, deviled eggs, shrimp&pork dumplings, a whole bird, all the sauces, shrimp tacos and the fries with oyster mayo. Was all delicious for sure. Bill ended up being less than I expected when it came time to pay, pretty solid deal all around for the experience. read more

One of me and my family's favorites but also a lot of my friends seem to rave about it too! Theres "complimentary" valet parking that is a little pushy on tips but the restaurant itself has a great waitstaff that's always been very friendly and of course the food and drinks are amazing! The fried chicken is that girl!!!! La Lucha is everything everyone has been saying. Wanted to get here and get my hands on some of the famed fried chicken. And I did just that. Came for a late Sunday brunch with my girls, the restaurant is nice and clean... white table cloths and all. Not overly crowded. My only complaint was the pew style seating along the wall, unfortunately I was sat right next to the humidifier which seemed strange and you could t get into the seat (church pew) because it had the shoulders and the humidifier was in the way. Now let's get to the chicken. I ordered the full chicken and what really surprised me was that for this to be a main item on the menu it didn't even smell like a fried chicken joint throughout the dining area. That was a plus. The chicken came with 3 sauces, red, green and white. I enjoyed the red and the green sauce. The crispy skin and hot chicken was just delectable! Flavor was spot on. And the biscuits with the strawberry jam was the perfect add on! We did order a few drinks but they didn't really stand out so I don't have much to say. read more

Brunch with seafood and chicken?! Yes please! This place does it so well and the curated interior decor is so rustic and homey. Definitely make a reservation on the weekend as they can be quite busy. They also have complimentary valet and street parking if you're on a budget. However, the food prices are a bit pricey so choose wisely. The food was super fresh and tasty, we stared out with some oysters from happy hour and it did not disappoint! The presentation was spot on and it's a great starter! I paired it with a mimosa because you can't have brunch without it. Then we had their famous fried chicken and waffles. The chicken was good but the waffles were a bit soggy and it didn't match the portion size of the chicken! However the syrup was addicting as our server Arturo pointed out and we loved it! My second time at La Lucha was fantastic! I am no stranger to Ford Fry establishments, dined at many of the Atlanta arms including Superica & Beetlecat. La Lucha is special! The menu is equally southern & equally seafood with some fun twists. The ambiance is lovely, it's got some rustic southern elements. The service was amazing -- everyone who stopped by the table was friendly & informative. Parking is all valet and reservations are easy to make online via OpenTable. On this particular Thursday, my friend and I dined at 5, it was not too busy but quickly picked up. It's all shareable dishes / family style meals. We had the oysters on the half shell for happy hour (which is from open to 6), biscuits & jam, half fried chicken (which also comes with biscuits -- oops, but the bird is seasoned and fried to perfection), blue crab chowder fries -- the chili oil on top of the chowder was EXCELLENT!, Vietnamese sticky wings (they are in a wonderful sweet, umami-filled fish sauce reduction). I washed mine down with a Gentleman's bet. You can't go wrong here! I'm eyeing the fish collars and shrimp & pork dumplings for my next visit! read more

Caught the Astros game and decided to stop by for a later than usual dinner at La Lucha. We were pleasantly surprised to find a seat (at the bar) on a Saturday night. Started off with a few oysters and the shrimp tacos. The oysters were very good, probably some of the best in the Heights. The crispy shrimp tacos have a striking resemblance to Jack in the Box tacos, but obviously they taste a hell of a lot better. Of course, we had to try the fried chicken - and it did not disappoint. It was juicy, crispy, and the crust had really good flavors. Everyone there was pretty nice and laid back. I'd definitely go back, I heard the pharmacy burger is good so I'll have to give that a try next time. read more

Sooooo yum! The only reason I'm taking off a star is because the lighting was a little too dark (nothing major, just a personal preference). My party of 3 + 1 child had oysters, deviled eggs, collard greens, fried chicken, some drinks, fries, biscuits, and a kid's meal. Everything was a 10/10. Yum!! Our table's favorite was the chicken and biscuits. The crispness, crunch, and tenderness did it for me. We enjoyed our food so much that I forgot to take pictures!
